6:02 am
the fire was just put out after firefighters let the barges burn overnight. close to the home, a south bay mother remains hospitalized recovering from some serious injuries after a speeding car slams right into her san jose home. take a look at the damage here. pretty bad. witnesses say two cars appear to be racing when they just lost control. one of the cars ended up right in the living room of that house. this all unfolded yesterday afternoon not far from leigh high school. "today in the bay's" bob redell, he spoke with her husband this morning. bob, the question is, how is she doing and what is the husband saying all about it? >> reporter: well, the husband didn't talk to us for too long. this is about an hour and a half ago. he was here early in the morning picking up some personal belongings. he is clearly upset. tells us his wife is in intensive care. when i asked if she thought he would make a recovery, he was
6:03 am
under the impression she would recover from her injuries. she was stuck inside her home on leigh avenue and ann way when a silver bmw went crashing into the home. you can see how large the impact was based on the amount of boarding that had to be completed. this happened just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. she was severely hurt. there were three teens inside thatyeip r(t&háhp &hc the impact so great, the car went so far into the home that caused part of the structure to collapse so much so that the fire department had to shore up the home with beams to prevent it from caving in even further. neighbors were able to pull out her 9-year-old daughter stuck behind a wall and some cabinets. she had been inside the home okay at the time. remarkably, she is going to be okay. the three teens were taken to the hospital, we believe, with nonlife threatening injuries. there was also a red bmd that was involved. it wrecked nearby. it was also driven by a teen. one witness saw both beamers, silver and red, racing down lee avenue before this crash. >> they were side by side racing
6:04 am
from what it looked like. the silver one kind of lost control and got hit by the red one and then the red one sent the silver one into the house. >> police did take the teenage driver of the red bmw in for questioning. it is not clear if that driver will be arrested. they believe both cars were speeding and are looking into the fact of whether or not they were racing, as that witness mentioned. that would be a surprise to people around here. in about 45, 50 minutes, we will hear from one neighbor that tells us that fast cars on lee avenue is a recurring problem. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:04. two bay area sisters will appear in are the could. both charged with child abuse and neglect. the pair ran a popular daycare where they endangered infants with babies and excessive

6:06 am
between 7 and 11 months old. the situation was made worse because three of the babies have upper respiratory infections. >> a child would need to be swad ld at the parent's care and only to comfort them as they fall asleep. not as a wrap them up and leave them there. >> this isn't the first time that they have run afoul. police say the state revoked their license at the daycare center in 2010 for swaddling also. they tell us that the younger sister reopened the facility under the parents' name at the same location. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." only on nbc, a san jose neighborhood being hit by mail thieves. it is not the only one dealing with an uptick in crime. marla tallez will tell you which neighborhood is keeping a close watch on their mailboxes and what experts say you can do to keep from becoming a target. that's coming up in a live report at 6:30. it is 6:06.
