from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning. thanks for waking up with us. it is 6:00. i'm marla tallez in for laura garcia cannon. i'm jon kelley. a sombre start to the week for a central valley community as neighbors and friends mourn the death of an eight-year-old girl. detectives still on the hunt for her killer. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the california highway patrol now helping out with this investigation. bob, good morning. >> chp has joined the state's department of justice and the calaveras county police department to find out who murdered 8-year-old leila fowler. her 12-year-old brother tells authorities he uncone terred an intruder in their home around noon. after the man escaped, the brother found his younger sister stabbed to death.

the sheriff's office has not yet named a suspect. they have recovered fingerprints and dna and interviewed people, including a neighbor that saw a man running away from the home at the time of the stabbing. the only description they have, this person was wearing a black shirt and blue pants. this is very rural, sometimes remote, which is one reason why law enforcement is asking people to lock their doors and be aware of their surroundings. there are a lot of parents that have to commute and go to work and they are latch key kids. so they come home. they unlock the doors. so i'm really concerned about our neighborhood now. >> as a precaution, deputies will be patrolling bus stops and schools this morning in valley springs at leila flowers elementary school, parents have been tying up purple ribbons in her honor, tomorrow night, the community will gather for a candlelight vigil. reporting live, bob redell,

"today in the bay." >> police in the east bay, need your help finding the man that tried to kidnap a 2-year-old girl from her front yard. this he roux he leased a sketch of the suspect. they say the girl was playing with her mother outside their home on snowflake way friday afternoon when the man walked up, grabbed the girl and took off on foot. the man apparently dropped the toddler and ran away. the girl was scared but not physically hurt. an east bay woman confined to a mental hospital after brutally killing her 8-year-old son is now free. teresa moses, beat, starved and tortured her son to death. in 2010, the richmond woman was found guilty by reason of insanity and then committed to i amenity tall hospital. the 30-year-old, moses, was freed after serving just three years, when doctors determined she was no longer a risk to society. a protest is planned today in support of bradley manning after he was mistakenly named

grand martial for this year's pride parade in san francisco. manning is the army private who was accused of leaking classified documents to wikileaks. he is also openly gay. last week, an employee from san francisco pride reportedly told him he had been chosen as honor racial grand marshal for the parade. decision was never made official and the board decided his nomination would be a mistake. supporters of manning plan to protest the decision trying to figure out what caused a building set for demolition to go up in flames. about 30 firefighters were called out to the tropicana lodge on el camino real after 6:30 last night. two-alarm firm closed parts of el camino for two hours. they were using it for hotel training exercises eight months ago. ventilation was in place to try

getting pretty hot today. 75 at the coast, 84, bayside, 90 degrees inland. your full forecast in a few moments. i will show you that seven-day outlook. it is going to get warmer before the heat breaks. first, want to check your drive. good morning. a big note for 101 through san jose. this is northbound 101 just north of 680. slow on the approach. things are jamming up. just north of here, i sometimes swing the camera around and catch the curve at mckie. that's where there is a crash reported. look at the maps. there is temporarily a big slowdown. three vehicles reported in your two middle lanes. lanes 1-4, your far right and left are the only ones getting by, if that. we are showing a big slowdown from north of 680. 680 may see some folks moving over there and trying to get around it. you will see 280 traffic getting up to 287. that will send folks working off of both directions. the rest of the south bay shows

a pretty gentle build right now. this may throw a wrench in the works. northbound 101 at mckie where there is one crash in the middle of the herrash here nthas you are ed hadding past durham, auto mall parkway. sounds like there is a sedan on the roof as you are coming by the off ramp. fire crews are shutting down at least the slow lane, if not the right two lanes. watch for that as you are coming around the bend heading up into sunol from the fremont area. there is your commute bogging down. another crash on the shoulder at santa rita. crews arrive. more slowing for the tri-valley. a little bit of relief for south 680. a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza where the build continues as the metering lights are turn are terpurned on. animal rescuers caring for

dozens of dogs and cats. monterrey police asked them to help rescue 17 cats and 31 dogs being kept in very unsaep tary conditions. the animals are suffering from flea infiltrations, dental and eye problems, malnutrition. they are asking for donations to help feed and treat the animals. donations can be made to the monterrey county spc, online and over the phone a retired firefighter from pacifica, among three abalone divers that died in less than 24 hours this weekend. 66-year-old cedrick colette was found several feel below the water saturday afternoon below the beach, shell beach. a 36-year-old diver was found sunday off fisk mill cove and hours later, another diver was found dead under the water.

it is 6:12. syria's prime minister escaping assassination attempted to. state media says a bomb went off near his convoy in damascus as his car drove by. nobody was hurt. at least 40 people, though, are hurt after an explosion tore through a building in the czech republic. the cause is still under investigation. police say initial evidence suggest it was caused by natural gas investigators in the central valley say they have found dna evidence at a home where an eight-year-old girl was found stabbed to death saturday afternoon. leila fowler's brother says he found her body inside the home at valley springs, 30 miles east of stockton. so far, no suspect has been named crews will search for human remains near the site of the world trade center where pieces of landing gear have been found

recently. the gear may be from one of the planes that hit the world trade center on 9/11. today, nypd and medical examiner's, the office there, will inspect that site before work starts to try and remove that landing gear. the search for human remains will start tomorrow at the earliest. today, one world trade center is on its way to becoming the highest building in the western hemisphere. today, the last pieces of the spire are being raised on the 104th floor skyscraper. those pieces plus a steel beacon that will be lifted at a later date, will bring the building to 1,176 feet. it replaces the twin towers destroyed on 9/11. the spire will serves a broadcast antenna. the fbi continues to investigate a hacker breaking into computers at living social. >> the company, similar to group upon, says hackers accessed

millions of customer records. >> not their credit cards and probably not their passwords but it is best you change your passwords on living social if you have one. living social says it is working with law enforcement after friday's hack. the company says if you used your facebook account to connect, that was left untouched. tesla makes it easier to drive a tesla. the company updating its warrant policy this morning. you can now skip the recommended scheduled maintenance if you want and even better, tesla says it will replace the battery system at no cost if something goes wrong. the batteries are the most vulnerable and expensive part of an electric car. tesla says, even if you don't follow the instructions properly, and ruin your own battery, they will replace it for free. i have two bits of news into our newsroom this morning. honda recalling some of its fifth model cars. the problem is in the electronic stability control. it is a software issue, not mission critical.

to the beach and have a nice time out there with temperatures that are going to be pretty warm. friday, into the weekend, temperatures stay hot. mike, you can imagine, motorcycles out there. they like this kind of weather. warmer weather brings more motorcyclists out there. it is more pleasant to drive. lower visibility. watch for our two-wheel friends out there. everybody needs to get along on the roadways. we have a case of what happens when some cars don't get along. north 101 from 680 jammed up toward mckie. i tried to find the crash hyped some trees. the northbound side does start to clear just before it gets to mckie. the word is the middle lane is blocked over here. this is north 101 north of 680 heading up toward mckie. shy of the off ramp. the backup starting to build farther back as they have yet to clear it. i did see a chp cruiser heading through the area. mild slowing for 280 and 87.

i expect more traffic to come this way as well as 680 around the bend. folks trying to get out of it. you can stick it out. i know it is unpleasant. allow another five-ten minutes through the area. you should be all right as you come past the interchange. the rest of your south bay, you are doing okay as far as the traffic. we had the earlier crash here going north past the auto mall parkway or durham road exit. that has cleared again. your local landmark as you are heading up from fremont in towards sunol. that was expect edly slow and unexpectedly to clear. it cleared so quickly this morning, early morning hours. west 580, still very slow. things are starting to move better. crash on the shoulder was causing all of this distraction and all that backup, a smooth drive. still very slow for 84, now coming through livermore. the build is on for the tri-valley, atypical for the dublin interchange. slowing off the castro valley

for the backup. busier and busier. 101 northbound continues to show that slam down as far as the speeds go approaching the the allen rock off ramp. we will look at the map and see that things are moving slowly. once you get north of mckie, everything is clear. that's a little bit different shift. past the airport, not a problem. 87 picks up volume. north 101 up towards mckie, two, three vehicles in lanes, including one suvs and two said dance. a third tow truck should already be on the scene. we are looking at a slow drive from capital city up there. the rest of the south bay isn't so bad. we will look at palo alto as we show a smooth drive along the peninsula. traffic starting to pick up here. earlier crash, down the eastshore freeway has cleared from west 80. i will show you the backup. it is pretty big coming off highway 4. that's for the next report as we mentioned moments ago,

inside of syria doesn't tell us when they were used, how they were used. >> there is pressure from capitol hill to act soon. >> for america to sit on the sidelines and do nothing is a huge mistake. >> more than just syria, iran is paying attention to this, north korea is paying attention to this. what type of action? a no-fly zone, air strikes, ground troops. >> the worst thing they could do right now is put boots on the ground in syria. >> lawmakers are concerned if there are chemical weapons, how quickly could we secure them? >> the day after assad is the day these chemical weapons could be at risk? >> the u.s. weighing its options as the threat of conflict becomes more likely. >> here is a concern. some of the latest fighting seems to have happened near a complex that had been linked to syria's chemical weapons program. >> we will keep our eye on that

a manhunt is underway for a man calaveras county deputies

say stabbed a little girl in her home. >> reporter: chp has joined the state's department of justice and the calaveras county's sheriff department to help find the man that murdered laila fowler. the 12-year-old brother says he encountered a man in the home and after the man escaped, he found his younger sister stabbed to death. this is why the sheriff's office had to ask people to lock their doors. deputies will be patrolling bus stops and schools in the area. as for leads, law enforcement has been interviewing people, including a neighbor who saw a man running away from the home at the time of the stabbing, black shirt, blue pants. that's the only description so far. they have also had to search the home that seems to have yielded some important includes.

congresswoman, jackie spear, will be at the summit and is saying san mateo county is looking at getting more mental health services at schools and collaborating more with law enforcement. >> we are going to look at the relationship between schools and law enforcement, how can they communicate better. how much information can school personnel provide to law enforcement without violating hippa or privacy rights? >> the goal is to create a standardized emergency plan for schools in san mateo county. it is 6:48 right now. santa clara county says its ambulance service is not making good on its contract. the rural metro ambulance company provides service for 911 calls in 14 different cities in large unincorporated areas of santa clara county. they said the company failed to meet its response time requirement in two of the last six months. the company has also paid nearly $5 million in fines for failing

relief. still very clear as it is built up from capital expressway. 85, 8 7, 280, all showing the build. better news for the tri-valley. 6:53. jury selection begins in a serial murder case that's been decades in the making. joseph naso was accused of killing four northern california women from the 1970s to the 1990s. after a lengthy pre-trial hearing and several delays, his trial is finally expected to get under way this week in marin county. he is acting as his own attorney a trial also starts today against former 49ers player quame harris, accused of assaulting his ex-boyfriend in menlo park last summer. harris was the first-round draft pick out of stanford in 2003. he played some time for the raiders. caltrans may have more bolt trouble on the new span in the bay bridge than first thought.

the san francisco chronicle reports the material used to make the bolts is virtually identical to a metal allow that transportation officials banned for use because the bolts can crack. 32 of the galvanizinged steel bolts snapped when workers tightened them last month. there are month are than 1200 bolts on the new span made from the steel. they denied any wrong doings the nonprofit group, the road information project analyzing the additional cost of operating a vehicle due to poor pavement conditions in san jose. checking in at number one in a not so great way, the south bay topping the national charts with drivers paying $756 a year in additional operating cost. l.a. checks in as number two. san francisco and oakland at number three. honolulu is four. rounding out the top five, concord.
