that is a nice shot over san francisco, a live look at the city with a hot day with some wind on this wednesday, the 1st of may, this is "today in the bay." good morning everybody. 6:01. thank you forgetting up early with us, i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> right now breaking news from the north bay where we're keeping a close eye on four separate fires burning in snap pa and sonoma counties. this is new video of one of the fires in napa county. firefighters say it's 40% contained and 50 acres have burned so far. three other fires burning out of control near yellow jacket ranch road in sonoma. crews battling strong winds making it very tough. that makes it difficult to get those flames out. right now it's so windy out in

that area. our chopper is not able to fly us over the seen to get the pictures. people are able to smell smoke in the air right now. we'll be keeping our eye on this one and all those fires and update you on the conditions all morning long. >> pretty amazing new video there. you know many parts of the bay area under that red flag warning this morning from the south bay to the east bay hills to the diablo area. cal fire is actually increasing its staffing and equipment levels to prepare. with fire season starting early, cal fire says they're bracing for a long and possibly challenging summer. >> what we'll see is in late july, august, september, there's a longer window where we'll have the opportunity to have large major damaging fires within california. >> firefighters are worried about the tall, dry weeds. there's not been a major wildfire in the area since 2009, so there's plenty of dry vegetation to fuel a fire should it happen.

you heard the winds of that other fire out there. they're really whipping. >> that's right. got to keep our eyes on this one. christina loren telling us it's making it tough to fight the fires. >> it certainly is guys. one of the reasons why, we've got the dry northerly winds. this is a live look at san bruno where you can zoo no low cloud cover. typically we talk about may gray. we aren't seeing any fog this morning, in fact, the exact opposite. all that cloud cover pushing back out to sea by these winds. as we head through the overnight hours, red flag warning expires at 6:00 p.m. the good news is, once we lose the wind, we'll see better humidity recovers. keep in mind we haven't had any significant rainfall since april 4th. so, yeah, hardly any april showers to keep those hills moist. what i can tell you is winds are going to be a factor for the first part of the day, especially where you see those colors popping on your wind

speed chart. you can see santa rosa, napa, areas like fairfield getting strong winds this morning. nice and calm here in san jose. those micro climates making a factor this morning. as we head throughout the next couple days, temperatures will be on the hot side, unseasonably warm. we're talking about 79 degrees in san francisco. tomorrow triple digits in the forecast. that's all in the forecast and better news when it comes to that fire situation. we've got rain as well. 6:04 first. let's check the drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. a busy morning for san jose as the second burst starts to hit. here is 101 at 680 where it will hit. look at that time map through the same area. we see the low kicking in. from 880 to 101. this unusually slow north 17 as we're traveling north of hamilton. we had reports of a big

slowdown. there was a crash reported there, reportedly fire crews had to every move someone from the car. turns out their seatbelt was stuck, it wasn't a bangled car. for a time there were three of four lanes blocked. it looks like they may be seeing a little rain north of 17. wind chester and bass couple will be your alternates. both moving very nicely right now. the rest of the south bay moves nice. in your northbound commute, no problems into cupertino and mountain view. a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the meering lights are on. all the way back past the 880 over crossing. >> 6:05. we could find out today if a suspect arrested after trying to kidnap a toddler in el dorado county is linked to the brutal stabbing death of an 8-year-old valley springs girl over the weekend. the 42-year-old man was taken into custody in placerville, 45 miles north of the small town of valley springs.

"today in the bay's" marla tellez has more on the potential break in this case. >> good morning, laura. today we could get the results of dna results sent to the crime lab. these results could tell us if this guy right here, 42-year-old jason wayrynen is the man who stabbed 8-year-old leila fowler to death. on saturday her body was found by her 12-year-old brother in jally springs. justin fowler said he saw a stranger leaving their home, a man with long gray hair. so far that's the only description investigators in calaveras county have released. now they're looking at wayrynen who broke into this apartment in placerville yesterday morning and tried kidnapping this 15-month-old girl. the mother you see there, she fought back, called police and wayrynen was booked on kidnapping and burglary charges. his arrest comes just hours before some 3,000 people came together to remember little leila, including her third grade

teacher and her brother who refused to say good buy. >> i'm not saying good-bye to leila. i'm going to say i'll see you later. there's no good-byes. >> she was respectful and never, ever a behavior problem. truthfully she was a little chatty. >> got to laugh at that one. leila liked to talk. she also liked purple and pink. those were her favorite colors. people dressed accordingly at her vigil last night. to be clear, at this point there's no direct link between wayrynen and the fowler case. again, his dna results could tell a very different story. we'll have to wait and see. coming up in my next report we'll hear from leila's mother. >> heartbreaking story. >> tears your heart out. remember the young martinez boy we told you about hurt in the boston marathon bombings. he has celebrating today. aaron hearn now finally back

home. today he's celebrating his 12th birthday. happy birthday, my man. "today in the bay's" christie smith has more on the story. >> reporter: there are so many people here in martinez following aaron hearn's progress, wishing him well, a number of restaurants and businesses held fund-raisers for the family during this ordeal. as you said, he did make it home just in time for his 12th birthday which is today. there is a note on the family door this morning to their home telling the media that he's doing well. they're trying to find peaceful family time and they plan to speak with the media on thursday afternoon. respecting their privacy and staying back just a little bit this morning. there's also a welcome home sign on the garage door this morning. it looks like it was signed by a number of his friends. hearn was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the boston marathon bombing and had two surgeries on his leg, even visiting the site of the bombing before coming

back home to the bay area. he was there with his family to watch his mom katherine run in the race. in the hospital he had a number of visits including members of the oakland a's stopped by to say hi. even first lady michelle obama. we're told he still has about 100 staples in his leg. a friend says he really wanted to be home for his birthday. at this point it's unclear when he might be returning to school. reporting live in martinez, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> great stuff. christie, thank you very much. >> wish him well. new this morning, it is mayday. workers in the bay area and all over the world are marching for workers rights. in bangladesh a procession of thousands of workers waved flags an banners to demand the death penalty for the owner of a building that collapsed last week. we told you about it, where at least 400 people died when the illegally constructed building

collapsed. owner of the building is being questioned by police and expected to be charged with negligence. he could face up to seven years in jail. meantime in greece, trade unions calling for a 24-hour strike to mark mayday t. unions there say government economic reforms have simply destroyed the rights and the livelihoods of workers. teachers, civil servants and bank employees all refusing to go to work today. passenger ships and railway services have also grounded to a halt. the latest austerity measures in greece require the country to cut 15,000 civil jobs by 2014. today workers in oakland will gather to rally and march in support of a plan for $15 per hour minimum wage. the march will start at 14th and broadway at 5:00 p.m. it will wind through downtown. many other protests planned in san francisco, the peninsula and the south bay. we'll tell you where the largest rallies will be held at 6:30. coming up, locked, loaded

built in venetia falling for bankrupt bankruptcy. >> scott, the other day on stephens creek shut down. >> that's right. the dealer group which owned the franchise told me it was simply moving the store to capital expressway. whatever the reason, it's irrelevant. coda is not going to make anymore cars. if you're saying to your haefl self-i never heard of coda electric cars, that's half the problem right there. the entire company only sold about 100 cars. here is why. the chinese company's cars went about 100 miles but cost more than $35,000. the hundred miles is a better range than the nissan leaf. virgin american recently hired an airline guru to reshuffle routes. a virgin launches service today between san jose and los angeles. bob redell, the first flight lands at manetta.

>> reporter: that's right. the flight arriving at 9:10. virgin america will be making a big to-do of it. they'll have a red carpet arrival. greeting them among the dig tear also be mayor chuck reed of san jose and sir richard branson, the founder of virgin atlantic airlines which is, of course, a minor are investor in virgin america based out of sfo. they'll be starting the flights today, significant because it shows the airline has confidence in this south bay economy to start ramping up new service. they will be about the fifth or sixth airline to do. we're still below pre recession levels, daily non-stops. with this now service, up to 20 routes. virgin america prides itself on the fact that it does have wi-fi on board every plane which is one reason they're calling this

numbers, but knowing the number behind it. i'm still thinking about chuck reed in sequins. the cool winds are helping bring down the fire. >> just brought up the hotness with chuck reed. the winds will calm down. that's the good news. once they do so, we'll see major improvement when it comes to our humidity recovery. you got the pacific ocean. typically this time of year, plenty of low cloud cover and fog to keep our sats fear moist. it has been dry as a bone the past couple days. today we keep those dry northerly winds pumping and a beautiful sunrise over san bruno shows you no low clouds to start the day and we do have choppy conditions out there on the bay. not a great day to be out there on the boat. 6:19. let's take it right to what we're watching this morning. calm winds for livermore, fairfield at 17 miles per hour, napa at eight miles per hour. santa rosa north at 10 miles per hour. that's where it's the driest and

gustiest. santa rose is at 67 degrees, 57 in sunnyvale with calm conditions in the south bay. that red flag warning stands until 6:00 p.m. hills above 1,000 feet. we're getting into that time of year. it's the entire state dealing with the dry conditions. weak disturbance tighten ed up the pressure gradient. the marine layer pushed way back out in the pacific and we warm up rapidly. 70s and 80s. santa cruz 80 degrees, 79 in san francisco and 90 degrees on the way to santa rosa. the next couple days we stay hot. tomorrow is the peak of the warmup. 96 in san jose and livermore. that equates to triple digits in gail roy, fairfield. i'll let you know which cities could be breaking records. we could be rivalling all-time

temperature records for your thursday. we'll cool you off into the weekend. monday to tuesday we bring in a slight chance, 20% to 30% shot of showers. we do have a cooldown. things will change quickly. the drive is always changing about this time, right, mike? >> it is rapidly changing. let's show the south bay. first of all, we see the northbound routes starting to slow, 87, 101, 17 has been an issue towards 280. what we're talking about is northbound 17 between hamilton and 280, two icons, it comes down to one crash blocking three of your four lanes in the northbound. commute direction heading toward 280. so bascom avenue and wind chester boulevard are the two roadways that are great options. they'll start filling up rapidly. look at this slow down coming up, campbell into the 280 interchange. that's northbound 17. it might show some more slowing as you come through the area. we're looking over here toward the san leandro area.

north of hayward, ashland is where we have an issue on hisperian. the chopper was just over the intersection. we see some flares. a major interchange there off 880 and 238. we'll track that as the chopper circles around. the roadway at the intersection was blocked there. back to the maps, we'll look to another issue. the bay bridge is not so much of a problem. the north bay, westbound 37 we have a sig alert past 121. there's a crash involving a big stall as well as another vehicle that crashed into it. that's goings-on in the westbound direction. we'll send it back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:22. this is one of the stories that makes you go, really? a growing crisis in italy. >> the country is short thousands of pizza makers. an italian business group says the country needs about 6,000 more pizza makers to accommodate the booming business. despite the worst unemployment rate in decades, many italians

"mercury news" says the 49ers and the city of santa clara are taking out a mortgage on the new stadium, expecting to spend less than previously expected. since the work started interest rates have dropped and officials need to borrow less money because fans quickly bought up those costly seat licenses. this means the 9ers and city officials can take on less debt. in the long run they may end up saving -- get this -- $90 million. tough news for a young kid at stanford, an off-season injury forcing their quarterback to call it a career. josh nunes, the starting fender-bender for t quarterback for last season dropped a barbell while bench pressing. he had surgery a few days later. normally for an injury, it takes

strong winds this morning, making it very tough to put those flames out. right now it's so windy our chopper not able to fly over the scene to bring you the latest pictures. people living as far south as san francisco reported they're able to smell smoke in the air. we'll be on this one and update you all morning long. we want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. how long will it last? >> it's in effect until 6:00 p.m. this evening. what i can tell you for the next couple days because it's going to be so hot, even though the winds will drop off, we want to be practicing the best of fire safety and monitor any sort of campfire or barbecue you have. make sure it's completely extinguished before you leave it. this is the reason why. these are the hills in sunol, until a couple weeks ago they were green. but now they have qukly turned to brown. temperatures are going to be

unseasonably warm yet again. lit be breezy just about all day long. we'll start to see the winds drop off. this morning, look how mild it is, 65 to start the day in livermore, 58 in san jose and 45 in gilroy, the strongest winds in the north bay. you want to keep that in mind, especially if you're waking up with us in napa and santa rosa. that will be the gustiest. by 1:00 p.m., temperatures rising up into the 80s, upper 70s. we'll round out the day in the low 90s. just to kind of put things into perspective for you, i want to talk about the records for today and how much we are going to blow past those records in places like santa rosa, the old record is 83. we're forecasting 91 degrees there today, 92 in fairfield, the old record is 87, even oakland is slated to break a temperature record today at 80 degrees where the old record stands at 75. now, tack on an additional five to eight degrees, that's where we're headed tomorrow. your full forecast reveals when

we cool down finally and we might get rain as well. first want to check your drive. take caution out there. it's one of those mornings. >> deceptively butyl here. the san mateo bridge. i want to take you to the maps for the south bay. the slowdown that's building and also the one that continues, slowdown at 101 typical. here at north 17 kochbts to be jammed up through campbell and the rest of san jose proper. we have two of four lanes still blocked. one of your lanetion has freed up. there's an injury crash still clearing lanes. that's the big backup. 880 and 238 still look fine as you're traveling from the castro valley y towards 808 and the san mateo bridge. we talked about the high winds, they were able to get up and zip over to san lorenzo and had to zip right back to hayward. i'll show you the video in a couple minutes.

park. president obama heads to mexico tomorrow. today in the bay's tracie potts joining us on capitol hill with the latest and a look at the president's trip along with his agenda. >> reporter: of the many things that president obama is trying to deal with in his second term, immigration is one that may actually have some momentum. president obama saying it would be an historic achievement if they're able to enact immigration reform. there's a bill on the table on capitol hill, the plan is for it to come up for a vote sometime in june. it looks like it may get more republican support this time around. analysts say here is why. >> the reason he can get it done is because republicans don't dare turn those hispanic voters down. >> reporter: of course, all this comes as president obama heads to mexico tomorrow sitting down with mexico's president to talk not only about immigration and security which, of course, includes border security, a big part of that immigration bill, but also about economics and trade. president obama says that's his

number one focus. mexico is our third largest trading bartter in. back to you. >> thank you very much, tracie. 6:36. nearly two dozen state lawmakers calling for a federal investigation into nevada's patient dumping practice. 21 state lawmakers want the u.s. attorney general to investigate raw son neal psychiatric hospital in las vegas. according to published reports the hospital routinely bused patients to cities and other states and left them there oovps. those cities included san francisco and san jose. two workers have been fired from the hospital and another three have been disciplined. the energy drink maker monster now suing san francisco's attorney. this one is a counter move after the city demanded the company change how their caffeinated drinks are made and marketed, demanding how the drinks are made and marketed. the company says it's being unfairly singled out to reformulate the drinks and change its labeling. monster says it stands by safety

welcome back everyone. 6:40. the fda says plan b will be available without a prescription for women 15 years of age and older. plan b is an emergency contraceptive that decreases the possibility of an unwanted pregnancy if taken within three days of unprotected sex. plan b does not stop a pregnancy if a woman is already pregnant, however. right now the pill is kept behind pharmacy counters and is available to women 17 years old and up. the maker of the pill says lit begin over-the-counter sales in just a few months. the number of emergency room visits involving the sleep drug zolpedam, is the active ingredient in ambien.

ranch road in sonoma. so far 200 acres have burned there. we're keeping an eye on all of this. time is 6:45. of course we are watching the weather for you as we give you a live look outside in san jose where in fact a red flag warning is in effect. when we say we're watching the weather, we mean meteorologist christina loren is watching the weather for us. >> good morning. doesn't it just look hot in san jose right now. >> you can see it. >> hard to believe it's only 6:45 when you're getting the sun blazing in this early, just an indication of how hot it's going to be today. the winds will still pump, especially at the coast and through the higher elevations. therefore, we're keeping the red flag warning in effect until 6:00 p.m. this evening. typically cal fire will enforce that you clear the brush around your home, but not until june. so you might want to go ahead and do that today, tomorrow, as we head through the next couple days as temperatures are going to be on the warm side.

we could be rivalling all-time records tomorrow. 59 degrees to start the day in oakland. part of the reasons, the warm northerly winds will continue to gust throughout the day. we have a small craft advisory in place. a bad day for the boat, but a good day to hit the beach. you can hop in the water real quick, 80 degrees, on the way, to santa cruz. comfortable conditions. you want to travel towards the coast if you're looking for heat relief. much cooler at the beach. the red flag warning stands. tomorrow we'll see the winds drop off which is why we'll let that red flag warning expire, even though temperatures will come up even more so. we could see the first triple digits of the year. i do believe we will in places like gilroy and fairfield. 80s and 90s inland. 80 degrees at 4:00 p.m. in santa cruz. 93 in fairfield and 87 in napa. tomorrow the heat is on.

couple weeks for the young martinez boy hit in the boston marathon bombings. today aaron hearn now back home. today he sell braelts his 12th birthday. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in martinez with this story. hopefully a great day for young aaron. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. during the ordeal the community in martinez really pulled together for aaron hearn and his family. a number of restaurants and businesses held fund-raisers for him. his classmates at martinez junior high recorded a get well video for him. now he got a great birthday wish, back home in martinez in time for his 12th birthday which is today. the family we're told arrived home yesterday afternoon. hearn visited the site of the boston marathon bombings before returning home to his parents in martinez. he was part of a group who traveled there to watch his mom katherine run the race. he was hit with shrapnel in the legs when the bombs exploded. this morning there's a note up

on the family's door saying he is doing well but they're trying to have peaceful times. we're respecting that and staying away from the home. there's a welcome home sign on the garage that looks like a number of his friends signed it. according to contra costa times this morning, hearn has almost 100 staples in his legs from the two surgeries he went through. in recovery he got quite a bit of support. players from the oakland a's showed up to visit him in the hospital to play in boston. even first lady michelle obama stopped by and delivered stuffed animals to aaron and his sister. the sign on the door say it is family will be speaking with the media on thursday. reporting live in martinez, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:50. relatives will claim the body of the boston bombing marathon suspect killed in a shootout with police. an uncle of 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev say it is family will claim the body now that the nephew's wife has agreed to

release it. the body has been at the medical examiner's office in boston for more than a week. so far it's unclear where the body will be taken. the cause of the death has been determined but will not be made public until the remains are actually claimed. today we could learn the hunt for a killer in calaveras county could be over. officials say a man who is in jail this morning could be linked to the stabbing death of an 8-year-old girl in valley springs which is about 30 miles east of stockton. "today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us with more on this potential break in the case. >> good morning. we've been covering this story since it first broke over the weekend. 8-year-old leila fowler stabbed to death inside her valley springs home on saturday. since then this community has just been on edge without any movement in this case. that is, until now. investigators saying they're looking at 42-year-old jason wayrynen as a possible suspect. wayrynen was arrested yesterday morning in plaser zil, about 45

miles north of valley springs after he tried to kidnap this little girl you see right here. she's just over a year old, 15 months old. he tried to take her from her own home. he's now facing kidnapping and burglary charges. his arrest comes less than 12 hours before thousands of people gathered in calaveras county to pay their respects to little leila, including leila's best friend who you'll see is just devastated and her mother crystal who fought through tears to say thank you. >> i just want to thank the entire community and all of our family and friends for the overwhelming amount of support that you've given my family. it will never be forgotten. thank you. >> this is my daughter. this is her best friend. they slept together, they went everywhere together. i took them to get ice cream everywhere together. i mean, it's a loss for us. it's a loss -- another daughter.

>> that candlelight vigil was held last night at leila's elementary school. back to the investigation, today wayrynen's dna results are being processed at the state's crime lab. so we could get more answers today and in the end learn if wayrynen is the man who was seen leaving leila fowler's home after she was brutally murdered. >> such pain for that community. thank you. the man who tossed bricks off a building during an occupy protest in san francisco will be back in court for sentencing this morning. 34-year-old jesse nesbit agreed to a plea deal for an assault with a deadly weapon charge earlier this year. authorities say nesbit threw bricks and other objects at fellow protesters and police officers. you can see him doing that from a roof last may. one person was hit right in the face. 6:53. protesters plan to rally at facebook headquarters in menlo park, upset about a tv ad funded

>> reporter: i think you just covered the entire story for me. i'll throw it back to you. good morning, scott. this means loyal flyers of virgin american no longer have to drive to sfo to hop a flight to l.a. they're calling these flights the nerd bird. that first flight between lax and silicon valley should be arriving around 9:10 this morning with those l.a. passengers receiving the red carpet treatment, as you mentioned, from may your chuck reed, sir richard branson and also a champagne brunch. and from then out, four daily non-stops. you add in the other airlines serving l.a. and you'll have 20 daily non-stops to choose from in the south bay, still short of what we had pre recession when there were 28 non-stops. the fact a major airline is adding these flights, shows there's growing confidence that our local economies are improving.

one final check of the top stories. immigration activists around the bay area marking mayday with rallies for workers rights and immigration reform. marches planned in san jose, oakland, san francisco and mountain view, all calling on congress to act on reform policies for undon'ted workers. firefighters are working four fires this morning in napa and sonoma counties. this shows one of the fires burning off silverado trail in napa county. strong winds making it very difficult for firefighters to contain them. all those wind and the hot dry weather we've seen prompting a red flag warning for a lot of the bay area. cal fire right now increasing staffing and also equipment levels to try and prepare for any outbreaks out there. there this red flag warning set to be in effect until 6:00 tonight. >> that's what's happening here on today in the bay. >> nbc bay area news at 11:00 coming up. marla andhave a great day.
