control the cinco de mayo crowds in the downtown area. it is time to dig out and dust off that umbrella again. we have showers on the radar, not just today. we will take you through your changing forecast. we are just getting started on your monday morning commute. i'm looking at the san jose bridge, live shot from the peninsula. i will show you about that and warn you about the hazardses across the bridge. >> a live look at the shark tank, the home of your san jose sharks. last night's victory gives them a 3-0 lead. one victory away from moving on and history on this monday, may 6th. this is "today in the bay." welcome to monday morning, one and all. it is here again time to get through it. it is 5:00, thank you very much for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. investigators are trying to piece together what led to a deadly limousine fire.

the nine women inside were celebrating a wedding. five died, including the bride. the driver of the limo is now giving his account of the tragedy only to nbc bay area. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live where two of the victims are still in criminal cal condition. a tragic story, bob. >> good morning to you, laura. two of the women still in critical condition here at valley med. the other two women were taken to stanford saturday night. we understand they are possibly still there. there conditions unknown. later this morning, around 10:00, chp will hold a newser to update us on their investigation to what caused saturday night's fire in a 1999 lincoln stretch town car crossing the san mateo bridge. inside the back, a newly married bride and her friends, all nurses, on the way to her bridal shower. the limo driver told us one of the women knocked on the partition, said smoke.

at first, he misunderstood it, they wanted to stop for a cigarette and quickly realized he needed to pull over as smoke started coming from the back of the vehicle he was driving. with snoek alreamoke already fi area through the rear doors, the only way out was the small opening that helped the drivers from the passengers. he helped three of the women climb through to safety. another got out on her own. the other five women, including the bride, could not escape as the fire and smoke engulfed the back of that limousine. >> we were all just in shock and i was scared, crying. >> reporter: the san mateo county coroner told us this was the one of the worst fatalities he has handled, because it was clear that those who died were trying to escape. the driver, orville brown, he is

the only person who made it out unscathed as far as not being physically hurt. he believed the fire might have been caused by an electrical problem. chp has yet to determine a cause. they tell us the limo owned by limo stop incorporated was not involved in an accident right before this fire started. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we will have continuing coverage of this story throughout the morning. coming up at 5:30, new details we are learning about the fire, what the coroner believes happened in the minutes before the women died. riot gear. "today in the bay's" marla tallez is live at police headquarters with video of strong police presence. >> i have reached out to the san jose police department. we are waiting to get the total number of people they arrested last night. they did put several people in handcuffs.

that's what we can tell you this morning when cinco de mayo celebrations got out of hand. the okay ochaos started at 8:30. 300 of 400 people swarmed the area. first, there was a report of a stabbing and then officials said a vta bus was basically destroyed. it's windows blasted out after people threw bottles at it. the mayhem was quickly stopped by dozens of officers in their riot gear. >> we have everybody available working this weekend. we have both our merge teams, which is our s.w.a.t. team and we have all of our motor officers working. we used everything we had to disperse that crowd. it was very quick on the disperse sa disbursal, about an hour. >> reporter: police tell us not one officer was hurt. as for the report of the stabbing, no word on the person's condition today. now, this morning, we drove the

length of santa clara streets. it is hard to believe hours ago it was packed with people. the streets are swept and all the storefronts are intact, which has not always been the case in years passed. live at the san jose police department, marla tallez "today in the bay." 5:05. a weekend outing at a lexington reservoir turned deadly. a 5-year-old and 34-year-old man reportedly drowned yesterday when the canoe they were in capsized. a 16-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man survived by swimming to shore. we are told all four were members of the same family. it is not clear how they are related to each other. investigators do not suspect foul play. no one was wearing a life vest. >> the man accused of shooting an oakland rapper causing a fiery crash is set to appear in court. he shot and killed kenny cherry.

his sports car slammed into a taxi which burst into flames. harris is expected to enter a not guilty plea in las vegas court today. if convict ed, he could face th death penalty. >> not a good day for me to forget my umbrella. good thing jon is here to take his coat and help you. >> hopefully, we can get some video of that. good morning. got a good-looking day shaping up. if you are sick of the heat, it is cooling. some showers coming down on the radar if you live in the south end of the bay area the. you have the best chance for seeing those showers. not a lot of activity in the north bay. if we do, later on this afternoon, when the bulk of the moisture from this system is going to start to move onshore. so, as you can see right now, just western facing slope facing san jose. as you are driving to work, you might get caught under some light showers. nothing too heavy. stop the xlok at 1:00 p.m. then, a little bit of activity might move as far north as

novato, even santa rosa. not expected much up there. with he stop that clock at 5:00. as you drive home from work, showers could come into play. like i said before, nothing too substantial. we are going to pick up maybe .500 of an inch to 0.10 of an inch. highs, comfortabled today. you won't need the summer gear. you can switch back to spring or fall as temps are going to remain in the 70s as we head throughout the next few days. give your a.c. and heater a break. enjoy mother nature's natural coolant as we head throughout this weekend. mother's day weekend. temperatures are going to warm up. if you want to hit the beach on sunday, comfortable conditions out there. don't forget about mom. >> we are looking over here. we are looking at the bottom of your screen. you see that one set of head lights that are not moving. that may be a tow truck. we have reports of a disabled vehicle that's on that span

coming off o the san mateo bridge on the foster city side right there. as you see, very light volume of traffic getting by without worries. be careful. stay over to your left at the pass. the map will show you there is no slowing coming off of the high-rise approaching 101. that is 92, the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge, 84. we had earlier slowing toward the caldecott that has cleared. there is the maze. a little slowing eastbound. things are moving much better than before. i'm not worried about it anymore. across the bay bridge, a light volume of traffic. that will change in the next hour. back to you b.a.r.t. says it will not toler rate unruly passengers. new rules going into effect this morning will give officers power to enforce that statement. the pictures of the people who have been temporarily banned from b.a.r.t. property. this really isn't public information. more like so they can know but these are people who have basically gotten violent on trains even to debate b.a.r.t. property. used b.a.r.t. as a public restroom, harassed riders or station agents. this ban can run 30 days to a year. what they are saying is, you see something, pick up a white courtesy phone and let the station agent know about it. under the policy, b.a.r.t. can ban people who are arrested or convicted of a misdemeanor for threats of violence, lewd acts, possession of a controlled substance, cited three times in three months for things like using a train at a bathroom. passengers we spoke with this morning say it makes sense within limits. >> urinating or messing up seats, spilling stuff, i can see that. but speech, very delicate.

welcome back, everybody. want to get away? how about on a big cruise ship. >> it is 5:13. the chance of a lifetime for some south bay singers. they ended up on stage with the rolling stones. this is video of the stones kicking off their tour in los angeles on friday night. they actually performed in oakland last night with the san jose state choir as their backup singers for a song. they performed, you can't always get what you want. they say the stones have been are bringing in choirs to back them up on their north american tour. the choraliers were chosen for that. scott mcgrew starts with some good mood over the job. >> let's look back on friday.

we were headed into the weekend. we got the latest jobs number from april. 166,000 jobs added. now, that, itself, not an amazingly strong number. it was dragged lower by cuts in government employees, private sectors are hiring, governments are firing. economists rethought some of the past month's data. they added jobs to our count with simply the stroke of a pencil. that was what sparked the markets. the dow crossed 15,000. the s&p 500 hit new records as well. what's ahead for today? let's check with seema mody live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. good morning. as we pointed out, stocks surging on the back of a positive jobs report. on friday, more jobs were created last month than ex expected. growth in february and march was better than first thought. the dow breaking above 15,000 and the s&p 500 index hit uncharted territory above 1600. the big event for investors this

up. >> somebody has got to. >> somebody has got to. good morning to you. as you get your day started, you want to give yourself a little extra time for showers. that's right. i did not say that incorrectly. we have showers this morning. after hitting those highs in the triple digits this week, quite another pattern. in fact, we are going to see cloud cover just about every single day. mostly cloudy skies and a few showers each and every day through wednesday. today, the best chance for that. you saw from the live picture of san jose, a little bit of blue sky and cloutd cover. that's where we are seeing the most activity mostly along the western-facing slopes. as we head throughout the day, we are going to continue to see most of these showers stream on shore and push from south to north. if you live in the south end or the east end, you have the best chance of seeing that activity. i'll show you why right now in your futurecast. showers at that point south of fremont coming down between san jose and palo alto. the showers are going to start to push to the north. you might get a little bit of activity at that point from

oakland north to napa. stop that clock, as we head through tonight, same deal. most of the activity combined in the south bay. still getting light showers. we might get a few thunderstorms later on as well. the best chance will be between 4:00 and 7:00. same deal. western-facing slopes facing san jose. most of that moisture comes through. we stopped the clock on wednesday at midnight after we are done with the shower activity. that's going to keep your temps in the 70s. just about every single day, we are talking about temps in the mid to low 70s inland. 64, san francisco, 73, redwood city. 73 in gilroy. i don't have to put those mid-90s on the map any time soon. all the way through sunday, which is mother's day, we are only going to keep your temperatures in the 80s, topping out at come forth believe levels for this time of year. it is a little too early to hit the summertime highs. let's check on your drive with mike and see where we are hitting. >> hopefully, we are hitting the speed limit for most spots right now. traffic is so light.

will et me show you what we find. the camera 101, facing up towards mckie. the off ramp, it is partially blocked by the trees. i was looking for any slowing. no problems with the head lights coming toward us southbound. the map this direction, a little slowing that pops up once in a while heading down through the same area. really, that just appears and clears very quickly as more adjustments to the averages. really, overall, your north bound routes are looking just fine throughout the south bay. we are talking about construction that was going on here blocking off the mission cutoff that should have crews completely cleared. we see northbound 880 coming away from the area. very slow right now. auto mall parkway, a great save connect nor. mission should be opened once again connecting 680 and 880. a nice, easy drive for the altamont pass. that's isabelle toward

valacitas. westbound getting off of the high-rise, things are moving smoothly. still a light volume of traffic. you see a crew flashing lights. i'll check on that. it sounds like a crew there. not a big deal. oakland, those crews have cleared past the coliseum. back to you. it is 5:19. two of the air force members killed in the u.s. military off of krgyzstan are from california. the tanker crashed after takeoff in the central asian nation on friday, killed in the crash, 30-year-old tech sergeant herman macky iii from bakersfield and 27-year-old captain victoria pinkney from palmdale. investigators looking for a cause funeral services held for a south bay soldier killed in action. the body of officer santos was

killed on friday. the soldier's procession made its way south. services set to be held today at noon. flags will be flown at half-staff over the state capital. the 24-year-old san jose native died april 6th in the kandahar province of afghanistan. >> firefighters are monitoring for hotspots after lightning sparked grass fire near redwood city. the fire broke out on skyline boulevard near san mateo road just before 4:00 yesterday. they say the fire burned about 100 feet of brush before it was eventually contained. >> the time now is 5:20. it was a tough loss but a positive outlook from the south bay boxing. who lost to floyd mayweather? we'll tell you what he said the man that prevented lebron james from making nba history tells his side of story next.

i'm lara garcia cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. we have new details surrounding the deadly limo fire that killed five women including a bride. this all happened over the weekend on the san mateo bridge. the driver is now speaking out, giving his account of that tragedy, only here on nbc bay area. "today" in the bay's bob redell live at valley medical center in san jose where two of those victims still remain in critical condition. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. the driver and four female passengers did escape the burning limousine saturday night on the san mateo bridge. that driver, orville brown wa, not hurt. the woman was badly hurt. two of them still in critical condition here at valley med. the other two taken to stanford. no update on their condition. the five friends, all nurses in their 30s and 40s, never made it out of the vehicle alive. the san mateo coroner telling us this was one of the worst fatalities he handled, because it was clear they had been

trying to escape but became overwhelmed by the smoke and fire engulfing the back of the vehicle. one of the women snokknocked on partition and said, smoke. he thought cigarette break but quickly realized he misunderstood. >> reporter: brown helped pull three of the women through that partition. the fourth woman made it out on her own. norwiza fohasu is one of the women that died. she was the new bride on her way with her eight friends to her bridal shower at crown plaza hotel in foster city when this tragedy struck. brown believes an electrical problem might have caused this fire, because the limo, which is a 1999 lincoln town car, had not

been in an accident. chp has yet to determine a cause. the agency plans to update us on their investigation on a news conference scheduled for later this morning at 10:00. reporting live here at san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." we are also learning more about the investigation and the victims of the tragedy. the nine women in the back of the limo were out celebrating an upcoming wedding ceremony. as bob had mentioned, the bride, nowiza fahasu, was among the dead. she planned to move to her native philippines for a ceremony next month. >> she was really a nice person. she was really nice to our kids and nieces and she was really a sweet person. >> investigators say the fire started in the rear passenger side door of the limo. the flames in the back quickly trapped those women inside. four women an the driver were able to escape.

we heard from the driver briefly there. the coroner says the other women were also just trying to escape through the small partition window but they why overcome by smoke. we will, of course, have continuing coverage of the deadly fire and more from the limo drive coming up live at 5:00. we will have details during our news at 11:00. you can get the latest details on our website any time. police in east palo alto holding a news conference after a series of violent events over the weekend including one where a young girl was hurt. a grandmother and her 6-year-old granddaughter caught in the cross fire in what appears to be a gang-related shooting near the corner of university avenue and bay road yesterday afternoon. in all, a total of five people were shot. that young girl, she was cut by shattered glass. four of the victims ran into a nearby mcdonald's looking for shelter. police now looking at surveillance camera video to try and help identify the suspects. a man was also injured on saturday night when he was shot

outside his home on cooley avenue. police say a gray sedan pulled up to the front of the man and someone inside opened fire. that man remains in serious condition this morning. 5:35. late night cinco de mayo celebrations turned violent in downtown san jose. officers in riot gear squared off against rowdy crowds in city streets. marla tallez is live with video of pretty strong police presence out there, marla. >> reporter: many people took the entire weekend to celebrate cinco de mayo. san jose police say friday and saturday went pretty well, relatively quiet for them. that all came to an end late last night when several people ended up in handcuffs after a mob scene in the downtown area. police say, 300-400 people swarmed santa clara street near 21st about 8:30 last night. first, there was a report of a stabbing that led to a police emergency. you can see police officers dressed in their riot gear. in the midst of the chaos, buses

were allowed to cycle through the area picking up and dropping off people. officers tell us one bus didn't make it out okay. it took a brutal beating. >> because the crowd was in the middle of the street, that bus got hung up in the crowd. they started throwing bottles at the bus, destroying the bus literally, the front windows, the side windows. after which time our officers got there and we dispersed a crowd that took about an hour. so by about 11:00, all was quiet once again. police tell us several officers even had bottles thrown at them but not one officer was hurt. as for the report of that stabbing, no word on that person's condition today. now, i have reached out to the san jose police department to get the exact number of arrests that were made last night. as soon as we get that information, we will bring that to you. live from the san jose police department headquarters, marla tallez, "today in the bay." cal fire kicking off wild

fire awareness weekend. this week will include a series of state meetings looking at how firefighters and emergency resporr responders can better prepare for a long fire season. the bay area has been hit by a series of small fires. they were able to knock down a vegetation fire at quicksilver park yesterday. a helicopter and state firefighters were called in to help. we are happy to report, no be was hurt and so far, no reports of damage. >> a little bit of precipitation will help as well. let's check the forecast with meteorologist, christina loren. we have much better conditions. the elevated fire danger has taken that down. over the weekend, this area of low pressure arrives very quickly. with he had showers yesterday in san francisco. this morning, we've had showers in the south bay. this is a current look at san jose where you can see a few mid-level clouds left over. we have a little bit more activity headed our way. we will get to your futurecast in just a minute. a really mild start out there straight to the short sleeves.

a couple of 40s popping up. los gatos. 51, campbell, 58 in san jose. 50 degrees to start the day in millpedis. we are going to see showers become more organized as we head throughout the second half of the day. right now, the person facing slopes. we stopped the clock at 8:00 a.m. san jose, a little more activity in the heart of your morning drive. mike and i will be here to guide you through it all morning long. by 2:00 p.m., showers creep up to the north as far as antioch. a little bit of activity in the north bay. the south end of the bay area will see the bulk of the moisture today. 73 on the way to livermore, 71, fremont, 64 degrees in san francisco. hike mike, let's see how we are doing in the traffic department with him. that is always changing minute by minute. i never know what you are going to show us next. we actually caught one of those second by second changes. laura showed a tease going into a commercial. that's where with he saw slowing getting out of treasure island.

i showed you traffic flowing but bunched up. back to its typical morning smusmu commute. we saw it on our cameras. now, it has completely cleared. the map shows you it is a little bit slowing still as you are getting into the city. typical as the volume starts to build coming over from the oakland side. no problems down the eastshore freeway. the maze moved smoothly as well. some slowing here for 580 toward the interchange. also, valacitas. that may be why we saw the early slowing sticking around for the area of livermore. it looks like things should start to clear up but your build is going on right now through the area. we will look at fremont for a live look. southbound 880 with the head lights past the truck scales in tesla. a smooth drive. we are getting a lot more company. we will show you the south bay coming up. >> you are busy there and on the weekends. take a look at mike inouye. he was busy seeing cooking

the station agents know what's going on. a union rep says it should help the station agents too. she are increasingly the victims of assault. under this new policy, b.a.r.t. can ban people for 30 days to a year who are arrested and con viced of making threats, lewd acts or if the person is possessing or selling a controlled substance on b.a.r.t. property. under this new policy, if a person is cited three times in three months for defacing b.a.r.t. or using a train as a bathroom, they are the ones they are going after. >> he is messing up the seats, spilling stuff, then, yeah, i can see that but speech, very delicate. our rights are being trampled and i'm very conscientious about that. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. officers have been trained on this new

at that point from santa rosa south to novato. not expecting a whole lot of activity. this evening, isolated thunderstorms. if you live in the western-facing slopes surrounding san jose, the east bay hills, you have the best chance of seeing those isolated thunderstorms. we are going to be on top of that for you today. we stop the clock by 10:00 p.m. most activity subsides as we head through tuesday. a slight chance for showers. 10-20% shots and highs all week in the 70s. 72 by wednesday. only 79 temperaturewise on friday. overall, getting a nice, comfortable break from this surge of heat we had to deal with last week. let's see what mike is dealing with, anything bad out there this morning? >> not so bad. talking about a surge of heat and traffic. north 101 shows the slowdown as well as some of the surface streets getting a little more traffic. a pretty typical pattern for monday morning. a smooth drive. just a surge, because of that.

that can all change tonight. the spurs, they have been looking at feeling good. fresh off sweeping the lakers in round one. tonight's tip-off set for 6:30. speaking of the warriors back here in the bay area, the front office giving us a look at the plans for the new warriors arena in san francisco. after some feedback from neighbors and critics, this he redesigned their plans, reducing the height about 10 feet. they also reduced the number of parking spaces and have increased public space around that arena to hang out and much like at&t park, the arena will include a public viewing area where the fans will have a chance to watch the warriors practice and play games. still, a lot of hurdles to clear in this one before getting clearance for the proposed arena that could go up on piers 30 and 32 just south of the bay bridge. >> from the hard core to the ice where the sharks are just one win away from doing something no other team in franchise history has done, sweep an opponent in the playoffs. the sharks hammered the vancouver canucks tonight

reed hoffmann and rod pinkus own the patents that make facebook go. recruiters these days only used linked in to find job candidates. they have no reason to look anywhere else. if you are not there, you are not a candidate for the job. other news, the "l.a. times" has taken a look at tesla's business. they say the company is benefiting from california tax breaks to the tune of a quarter billion dollars a year. when you buy a tesla, california gives tesla an environmental credit. it, in turn, sells that to detroit auto mamakers to help t reach california clean air requirements. that may be one of the reasons that tesla sells so well. they keep prices down, because they are receiving money elsewhere. by the way, the world record for my son, ian and i, eight teslas on the highway on sunday. try to beat that. >> you counted them? >> we counted them.
