it is 6:00. a very good morning, one and all. thank you very much for getting up early with us. i'm jon kelley. i'm laura garcia-cannon. new details about a horrific limousine fire on the san mateo bridge that killed a bride and several of her friends during a wedding celebration. this morning, the driver of the limousine is speaking out exclusively to nbc bay area about what he says happened in the moment before, during, and after the crash. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live at valley medical center in san jose where two victims are still in critical condition. such a horrific crash, bob. >> reporter: yes, there are four women who survived. two still in critical condition here at valley med. the other two were taken to stanford. their conditions are unknown. later this morning, chp will update us on the investigation into what caused saturday night's fire in this white, 1999 lincoln stretch town car. that was crossing the san mateo bridge inside the back were a

newly married bride and her eight friends all nurses in their 30s and 40s on their way to a bridal shower at the crown plaza in foster city. one of the women knocked on the partition, said, smoke. at first, he misunderstood, thinking that they wanted to for a cigarette break and quickly realized he needed to pull over as smoke started coming from the back of the vehicle. with smoke already filling the area by the rear doors, the only way out was the small opening that separated the driver from the passengers. he helped three of the women climb through that partition to safety. another was able to get on her own. the other five women, including that bride, noriza fohaus, could not escape as the fire and snoek smokin' engulfed the back of the limousine.

>> reporter: the san mateo county coroner tells us this is one of the worst fatalities he has ever handled. it was clear that those who died were trying to escape. the driver, orville brown, believes the fire might have been caused by an electrical problem. chp has yet to determine a cause. though they tell us the limo owned by limo stop, incorporated, was not involved in an accident, right before this fire started. again, chp is supposed to update us on this investigation in a few hours from now, around 10:00 this morning. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." it will be interesting to find out how that started. thank you, bob. we will have continuing coverage of the deadly fire including more from the limo driver coming up in a live report at 6:45. we will have the details from this morning's news conference during our news at 11:00. you can get the latest details on our website, nbc bay area.com. a big weekend and late night cinco de mayo celebrations in downtown san jose turned into a police emergency.

officers in riot gear facing off against rowdy crowds after violence breaks out on city streets. "today in the bay's" marla tallez is live at police headquarters with video of the very strong police presence. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i have reached out to my contacts at the san jose police department. we are waiting to get the final arrest numbers from last night. we can tell you several people were arrested after the cinco de mayo celebrations got out of hand. the chaos started at about 8:30 when police say 300 to 400 people swarmed the area. a bus was basically destroyed after people threw bottles at it. the mayhem was quickly stopped by dozens of officers in their riot gear. >> we have all of patrol working this weekend. both of merge teams which is our s.w.a.t. team and our officers working.

we used everything we had to disperse that crowd. >> reporter: several officers had bottles thrown at them. not one officer was hurt. as for the report of the standing, no word on the person's condition this morning. we drove the length of santa clara street. hard to believe just hours ago it was packed with hundreds of people. the storefronts are intact, which is not always the case after cinco day mayo on may 6th. firefighters are looking for hotspots after a grass fire on skyline boulevard near san mateo road just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. san mateo firefighters say it burned about 100 feet of brush before it was contained. firefighters remain on the scene mopping up and watching for possible flareups. in the meantime, down in southern california, cool air and showers down there should

help firefighters contain that massive wild fire that so far burned 44 miles of the western end of the santa monica mountains. investigators say the fire was probably sparked by an accident at highway 101 near thousand oaks. reports now say 15 homes have been damaged because of this blazing fire that just has been so tough to contain all weekend long. >> it could help that we are going a little precipitation. as you pointed out, christina, earlier, as to the growth. >> it is going to become more of a long-term problem. you are right. we can't catch a break at this point. the good news is, we turned off the hot blow dryer. the santa ana winds have relaxed. onshore. wanted to start with this live picture. you can see that moisture pushing on shore. very thin marine layer at 6:06. 58 degrees to start the day. 60 straight up in san francisco. we have showers continuing to move on shore. very light, most of the

activity, when it comes to our area, is still located offshore. as we head throughout the day, it all works like this. at the end of this broadcast, a little more active. this is the futurecast at 8:00 a.m. you can see these mountains surrounding san jose. the mountains getting some activity that will continue for the first part of the day. we stopped the clock at noon. you are fair game for showers, specially south of the golden gate bridge throughout the first part of the day. then, we are going to increase the chance for showers north of the golden gate bridge. your futurecast tells that story. we stopped the clock at 3:00 p.m. starting to get a little bit of activity up north. the east bay and south bay, the bulk of the moisture will come through. we do need that moisture to keep our atmosphere going at this point. we don't want those dry conditions specially after what we had to deal with, triple digit heat last week. mike looks like he is tracking something serious. >> we are tracking first of all a lot of changes. there you go. we just had our friends adjust the lighting. the sun just came over the top

of the mountains. it was blowing out our shot. now, you see the smooth flow of head lights. nice flow for 101 through san rafael. approaching 101 where there is a crash right there. sounds like a truck with paint equipment. it is a double axle truck. over closer toward 101, you are okay, close to the speed limit. volume just starting to build up. west 880, a commute, crash to the shoulder. not a major concern. you see it slowing past hercules. the bottom is building toward the bottom of your screen. highway 4, eastbound around mccune. we have a crash right there. a single car spun out, a second car hit it. a two-car crash. minor injuries from what i can tell. we will track that for highway 4 and the cut-through. we still have the livermore police department over there.

isabelle at valicitas. it sounds like it is still a problem. we do see slowing in the opposite direction of your commute. okay up toward 580. now, it is slow. west 580, the earlier car fire reported. it sounds like it is an issue. everybody sounds like they are out of the car. it is on the shoulder, west 580 around north green or quenneville. we are looking at the toll plaza and all lights backed up. >> 6:09. the pleasant hill city council will discuss the fate of a popular theater, the city arts dome is slated for demolition to make good for dick's sporting goods stores. they say the 46-year-old theater is a community landmark with historical and cultural value. city council will consider whether to honor that appeal

everywhere. showers come downing here in the bay area and snowfall right now in the sierra nevada. we are going to show it all to you coming up. hard to believe. a beautiful shot. i just saw a peek of traffic in christina's shot. 101, smoothly. traffic just starting the burst for the south bay. we will show you the slow downs as well as what's going on in the tri-valley car fire. thank you very much. time for a quick check of the day's top stories. new video out of syria claiming that it shows israeli rockets hitting a syrian military research center over the weekend. that attack was reportedly to stop weapons from getting to the militant group, hezbollah. several people are under arrest after cinco de mayo celebrations turn vile lenolente streets of san jose. someone was stabbed and a vta bus was vandalized. officers in gear had to come in to clear the rowdy crowd.

>> well will learn more about a deadly limousine fire. the cause of the fire still remains under investigation new rules go into effect on b.a.r.t. that could get some passengers banned "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the fremont b.a.r.t. station with what is changing. >> reporter: passengers who say they have dealt with unruly. >> people on b.a.r.t. before say they try to handle it themselves saying, i have had enough or leave me alone or trying to walk away. this new rule is aimed at the most violent passengers or people who deface property over and over again and use the trains and stations as public restrooms. union reps say this should help station agents because they are increasingly victims of assault. new state legislation makes it easier for them to issue orders for a month up to a year. after an officer's fatal

shooting, the grant is 2009 in oakland. b.a.r.t. followed a really long process to decide how and when to use it. b.a.r.t. can ban people who are arrested or convicted on b.a.r.t. for threats of violence, lewd acts people have committed, hindering a train's operation or cited three times in a month for defacing property or using the train's restrooms. one rider said he felt lucky he hadn't seen it. >> maybe i am just lucky, i don't know. i have not seen anybody upset at anybody else. if it happens, it is definitely necessary. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. officers have been retrained on how to use this law and how to work with homeless people or those that are mentally ill. a person on the list is basically notified. they have ten days to appeal. only station agents have this. it is not made public. reporting live in fremont, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks, kristy.

momentum may be carrying over from last week. the dow will start just under 15,000. >> they popped over that magic number several times on friday. scott mcgrew, better news on jobs driving the market. that's the conventional wisdom. 15,000 on the dow friday. 7.5% unemployment. keep in mind, though, back when we were down in the 4%, 5%, the dow wasn't this high. that's the number there. the dow crossed the 15 k for the first time friday. nothing magic happens at 15 k. it is sort of interesting and note worthy as a benchmark. you mentioned jobs. we got the latest jobs numbers for april on friday. 166,000 jobs added. that's not an amazingly strong number. it is dragged lower by cuts in government employees. private businesses are hiring. governments are laying off. economists, some of the past month's data. they added jobs with the stroke of a pencil.

3-d printing becomes very important development. it is exactly what it sounds like. a printer that can make actual objects printing something you can hold. this morning, one of the fears was someone would use a 3-d printer to create a working gun. here it is over the weekend. somebody put this together successfully fired it with a real bullet. there is video online. we have not gotten the inventor's permission to use it. only a matter of time where "saturday night live" took on google glass. here is nbc's randall meeks showing them off to seth meyers. >> you just tog the through the menu like this and you have to activate it just a little like this. >> that's pretty cool. >> it's great, because no one knows you are doing it. >> later, they decide they want italian food but he says outside, italian but that changes the google glass's language to italian. hilarity ensues. it is on hulu.

you can check it out for yourself. poking fun of google but great publicity for the company. 6:07. are you okay? >> 6:17. christina loren is back to tell us about raindrops coming our way. >> raindrops coming our way, snow in the sierra nevada. it is the sixth day of may. i only know that because cinco de mayo was yesterday. 6:18. take you outside and show you what we are working with. doppler radar tells the story. look at the spine of the sierra nevada surrounding lake tahoe. snow showers and our snow levels are very high. as you can imagine, temps in the bay area are in the 60s. very unusual to see that. that's exactly what we are working with this morning. we have light isolated activity in the north bay. showers have been pretty light. we have had enough moisture come through to make the highways a little bit on the slick side. you do want to travel cautiously as we head throughout the day. we haven't had any significant rainfall recently. that tends to slicken up the rhodes a little bit.

that losens up all the oil that's been accumulating. as we stop the clock on your futurecast, 9:00 a.m., a little bit more activity on the south bay. mostly going to see the action on the east and south end of the bay area. we might see stray showers up in the north bay as we head throughout the day. basically, pesky showers. you probably want to bring an umbrella with you. not expecting anything too heavy. no puddles or ponding. enough to get your clothes nice and wet. if you don't want that to be the case, bring the umbrella with you. like i said before, we are not expecting much. 73 degrees. maybe somewhere in the vicinity of .500th of an inch or 0.10 of an inch. enough stability for the same deal to apply. mostly along the western facing slopes surrounding san jose. the coastal mountains, could see an isolated thunderstorm or two. we will be watching for that. as we head throughout the end of the week, temperatures stay steady, 70s, inland.

saturday and sunday, the mid-80s arrive. looking good for your outdoor activities. 6:19. let's check the drive as promised. >> good morning. a slower drive as expected. for the eastshore freeway, west 80. your commute direction underneath university avenue. berkeley. we have you slowing through richmond and in to berkeley. speeds are holding up pretty steady. not a major concern. approaching the bay bridge toll plaza as you come around the berkeley curve. the stop as folks are backed up in all lanes just past west grand avenue as far as the slowdown goes. there is your approach toward the bay bridge into san francisco. a pretty typical build there. we are looking at the peninsula with no major issues here. 101 northbound toward willow and south towards university. through palo alto and menlo park. 280 and 101. smooth between the city and the south bay where we will join the maps and see how things are shaping up. monday morning, pretty mild. north 101 from 680 up to the airport. 87, 280, just starting to show a

bigger build. the surface streets, crews right up here. a lot of slowing as you are hegd up towards santa clara. looks like it has calmed down. west 880, we have a disabled vehicle up there partially in the lanes. watch it, stay over to your left. the southbound side is where the commute starts to build. there is slowing here in fremont and union city. a typical build off of 238. a smooth drive towards 580 westbound. 680 as well. in livermore, we still have crews working there on that crash. early morning, sounds like an issue and distraction. the earlier car fire sounds like it is out. west 580 at greenville. it is 6:21. this morning, buying viagra just got easier. in a first for the drug industry, the drugmaker, pfizer, will start selling the popular little blue pills to patients on its website. men will still need a prescription to buy viagra. they no longer have to face the pharmacist to get it filled. pfizer says the new strategy

double digits as far as increasing so far in 2013. see if you can get more of a push with those good numbers. on this monday, may 5th. this is "today in the bay." 6:30 right now. good morning. i'm jon kelley. i'm laura garcia-cannon. a developing story in syria where rebels say they have shot down a military helicopter, killing eight government troops on board. this is video posted online overnight by human rights organization in britain that appears to show several armed men standing in front of the wreckage. that new video comes out just one day after another video was released on the internet reportedly showing an israeli rocket hitting a military research center in damascus in syria. "today in the bay's" tracie potts monitoring the situation in washington, d.c. tracy, the attack certainly raising the stakes for the obama administration. >> now, with israel involved. they apparently are trying to prevent those weapons from getting to their enemy,

hezbollah. according to an intelligence official, we didn't get a heads up about those attacks. this web video claiming an israeli rocket hit a military base. >> the red lights were green lights to assad to do anything short of that. >> the israelis justifiably have to guard against the transfer of advanced weaponry to terrorist organizations like hezbollah. pressure is mounting for military action. soon, some lawmakers are urging the president to arm syria's rebels right now, you have the front that is affiliated with al qaeda on the ground providing the best fighters and the most weapons. >> there are concerns. >> my concern is that by arming the rebels, with he could be strengthening al qaeda. >> you have al qaeda and

hezbollah backed by iran. when that situation, when he leaves, where are we going to be then? >> we have seen in libya and egypt and elsewhere, the islamists tend to get the upper hand if they get in there. >> as of this morning, reports of casualties from the weekend strikes, several dozen syrian soldiers unconfirmed. it was one of two strikes within 48 hours, laura. >> thank you very much, tracy. the man accused of shooting an oakland rapper on the las vegas strip and causing a fiery crash getting ready to appear in court. 27-year-old amarch harris shot and killed kenny "clutch" cherry as he was driving down the strip. his sports car slammed in and burst into flames killing both people. harris is expected to enter a not guilty plea in las vegas.

if convicted, he could face the death penalty a weekend outing for one south bay family did not have to have such a tragic ending. a 30 and 35-year-old man drowned when the canoe they were in capsized. neither was wearing a life vest. a 16-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man survived by swimming to shore. all four members were of the same family. we don't know how they were related. investigators do not suspect foul play. the time now is 6:33. right now, and all morning long, christina loren has her eyes on the sky for us checking out the weather as we give you a live look. that was san jose. good morning. >> good morning to you. you saw those mid-level clouds hanging out over the mountains in san jose. that's where we are expecting the most activity. we are going to slice the bay area in half over the bay bridge, south of the bay bridge. that's where you can expect a little bit of moisture, livermore, concord and oakland.

we are going to keep you in the mix. temperatures are going to be nice and mild. the showers are going to stream up from south to north. if you live in the south bay, you have the best chance of seeing the activity. we are still going to see a little something in the north bay. a little bit of spotty action from santa rosa down south to san francisco. we are not expecting the heavier moisture to move on shore until later on this morning. we are expecting more action. we stopped the clock at 7:00 a.m. you can see that. when you start to see the deep green, heavier moisture. south of the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge. between 2:00 and 5:00, we will start to see the showers push up to the north. if you are living with us in oakland, san francisco, anywhere north of there, that's when you can count on the most activity to come through where you live. those micro climates make it kind of tricky this time of the year. certainly, that is the best assessment. fair game for showers all day long south of the golden gate bridge. later today, you can count on those showers moving up to the

north. 72, napa. 72, concord. as we head throughout tonight, we are going to ep coup tkeep t showers in the forecast. let's check your drive with mike. good morning. looking over here to a live look at 101 north of 680 through san jose. this is your commute direction. actually, not so bad for this time on a monday. 6:35. let's look at the maps. we will see that. that's the only area we are seeing the slowdown. a pretty smooth drive. north from 680 up toward 880, the only area where we see the sustained slowing coming down in toward 5th. we see it building for 87 and 280 coming up toward the 880 interchange. southbound where we see a lot of traffic coming off of the 238. south toward hayward, union city, moving off toward the san mateo bridge. no surprises. a little slowdown preaching the toll plaza. 680 kicked in pretty strongly. traveling south from 580 through

welcome back. b.a.r.t. cracking down on people that misbehave on their trains and station. new rules going into effect outlining what they will and will not tolerate. >> christie smith live at the fremont station about how passengers seem to feel about some of these new rules. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon and laura. this is aimed at people that get

violent on b.a.r.t. trains, deface property over and over, use the trains as personal rest rooms and har ras people constantly. starting today, b.a.r.t. can issue stayaway orders and ban people for up to 30 days to a year. state legislation makes it easier now for b.a.r.t. to do this. they are talking about people specifically that are arrested or convicted for making threats, threats of violence, lewd acts on b.a.r.t. property, hindering a b.a.r.t. train from operating. a station agent said it should be better for them too. increasingly, the station agents are victims of assault. they have to go ahead and pick up white phones and say something. we spoke with one writer that understands this decision. he says, often, he chooses to handle these unruly people on his own. >> you have to rise above that, you no he what i mean. just say, yeah, okay, man, you are right. i'm wrong. just let me go home.

around the berkeley curve. another uissue. we have new details this morning about a horrific limousine fire on the san mateo bridge that kills a handful of women and several of her friends during a wedding celebration. this morning, the driver of that limousine is speaking out exclusively to nbc bay area about exactly what he says happened in the moments before, during, and after that incident. "today in the bay's" bob redell joining us live at valley medical center in san jose where two of those victims still remain in critical condition. bob, good morning. >> good morning to you, there. there were ten people inside this limousine when it caught fire saturday night crossing the san mateo bridge. it was the driver and his nine female passengers in the back. the driver, orville brown, was hurt. the women were badly injured. two of them in critical condition here at valley med. the other two who survived were taken to sanford. no update on their condition.

five other friends, all nurses in their 30 s, and 40s, never made it out alive. the coroner telling us this was one of the worst fatalities he had to handle, because it was clear they were trying to escape at the time of their death. the driver offer the limo tells us, one of the women knocked on the partition as they were crossing the bridge and said, smoke, he thought cigarette break. he quickly realized he misunderstood. >> they said, smoke, smoke, smoe smoke, pulling ov over, pull ov pull over. >> reporter: orville brown was able to help three of the women through the partition. the fourth was able to make it out on her own. >> noriza fohaus, a new bride on the way with her eight friends

to a bridal shower when this tragedy struck. brown believes an electrical problem might have caused the problem. they had not been in an accident in the weeks leading up to this. they plan to update us at a news conference a few hours from now. reporting live, san jose, bob redell. "today in the bay." a shooting left a peninsula grandmother and her 6-year-old granddaughter caught in the cross fire. east palo alto police say five people were shot near a mcdonald's at the corner of university and bay area road. the young girl was cut by shattered glass. police say the shooting is probably gang-related. they were looking at surveillance video to track down the suspect. >> this morning, investigators still trying to track down the person that killed 8-year-old

leila fouler at her home. divers are out searching for any kind of evidence. investigators are going door to door trying to find possible witnesses. the victim's 12-year-old brother describing the killer as a tall man with long, gray hair. late night cinco day my owe celebrations turn chaotic and violent in downtown san jose. officers in riot gear squared off against rowdy crowds in the city street. a look at strong police presence, good morning. i just spoke to san jose police spokesman, officer albert morales and he told me in all, 11 people were arrested last night surrounding the cinco de mayo celebrations. 11 people, take that into consideration considering that 23 people were arrested in 2012. more than a 50% drop. some of those arrested happened in the downtown area when police say 300 to 400 people swarmed

santa clara street near 21st at just about 8:30. you can see officers working the crowds. in the midst of the chaos, vta buses were being allowed to cycle through the area, picking up people, dropping off people. one of those buses did not fair so well as one officer tells us, it took a brutal beating. >> because the crowd was in the middle of the street, that bus got hung up in the crowd and they started throwing bottles at that bus destroying the bus literally. the front windows, the side windows. and after which time our officers got there and we dispersed the crowd. that took about an hour to disperse the crowd. >> officer morales tells me a patrol car was also vandalized. its window shattered after rocks were thrown at it. some police officers had bottles thrown at them. not one officer was hurt. we know that san jose police were also investigating some sort of an assault. they say they have an assault victim on their hands today.

details surrounding that are not being released yet. as of the 11 arrests, not all were downtown. officer morales tells me some of them happened in the foothill division, which has been east san jose. live from the san ho police department headquarters, marla tallez, "today in the bay." >> it has been a long weekend in southern california. firefighters should be able to contain the massive fire down there. this big-time blaze which has burned 44 square miles at the western end of the santa monica mountains. investigators say the fire was probably sfark probably sparked by an accident that took place at highway 101 in thousand oaks. at its peek, some 4,000 homes were being threatened. we are also seeing wildfires in the bay area. a helicopter and state firefighters were called in to try to knock down this fire. san jose's quicksilver park. we are happy to report nobody was injured and no major damage.
