what should you do if you walk into a room and it's not something like a construction problem but an everyday problem? >> the first thing you want to do is go to the front desk. when you go to the front desk, you want to bring your smile. you want to tell them simply, it smells funky. there's something in my bed that has eight legs. and people are going to take care of you, typically. >> you don't call down, you go down. >> if you call down they're going to put you on hold. the front desk, they're very busy. you go down, you look them in the eye, you square off and say, i have a problem, would you please fix it. if they don't fix it you ask for the supervisor. if they don't fix it, you ask for the general manager. if the general manager doesn't fix it -- >> then your vacation is over and you spend all your time fighting with the people at the hotel. >> if you do your research, you check into a good hotel. >> so how do you do that? how do you do your homework? >> the first thing is you want to make sure you know what you want. what price you want to pay, what area of the city you want to stay in. and you know what level of service you want. when you do go online, you book, you're not disappointed. you're not easily pushed to a cheaper room or a more expensive room. >> do you go right to the hotel's website?

a lot of those places have, you know, ones that you can get on a bunch of different hotels. >> right. you have third-party travel agents. but you typically go on the hotel's website. that's typically where you get the best deals. if you want to change at the last minute they're more flexible. if you go on third line -- excuse me, third-party travel agents, they're not as flexible. also online on the hotel's website is usually the most inexpensive rate. >> should you call the hotel before you even get there, just to ask like what's up? >> 100%. because if you have a 100, 200-room hotel as a manager, you don't know everyone. if you make a phone call to speak to the general manager -- >> before you show up? >> absolutely. >> i've never done that ever before. >> absolutely. >> why? >> because you let them know, hey, i'm coming, you know what i do? i always ask for a request so they know i'm coming. i ask for either a non-smoking room or high floor or corner room. so they have to go in -- >> in other words, to confirm what you've already agreed to. >> and they've attached that someone called them. so they're going to take extra care. what i do is i usually give them

betty crocker food editor kristen olsen is here with some recipes from "the big book of cakes" that are easy enough for the dad and the kids to make. is that right? is that true? >> absolutely. mother's day is just around the corner. and we have some great ideas for cakes and delicious treats that, you know, dad can tackle with the kids. we're going to start off, this is a delicious layered cupcake with some very classic flavors. >> this is just basic batter? >> yes. we whipped up a batch of cake mix and divided it into two bowls. we've added chocolate to one bowl and then vanilla will be placed right on top. >> oh. >> that's a clever idea. >> you really get a very easy way to make a double layered cake. >> look at that. >> how cute is that? >> tandem. >> so the double layer comes in here but it's also in the frosting and that's where all the fun begins. >> okay. >> we're going to start, i've got frosting in our piping bags. so if you want to start with the chocolate and just squeeze and go right around the center.
