>> 8th. >> and it's not tuesday. just ignore me. >> don't deny me a day. it is wednesday. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. a firestation is hit by gunfire overnight, firefighters having to duck for cover. bullets flying through that station. the search is on for the gunman. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live with more. >> reporter: talk about a close call. normally firefighters are called to help others. this time at least three of them who were inside actually had to help themselves, hit the deck and run for cover as bullets shatter the front window where they park their fire trucks inside. the bullets -- this was an exit. the bullets came from the opposite side of the firehouse and may actually hit a house across the street.

fortunately, though, no firefighters were hurt in all of this. that happened about 9:00 last night at station 18 on 50th avenue in east oakland. half a mile away, a man was shot and killed in a hail of gunfire over on melrose avenue. he was taken to highland hospital where he died. i'm told the detector system picked up two gun shots fired in the area. no one arrested in the shooting. as you can imagine, very rattled nerves for these firefighters. christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:02 this morning. oakland landmark near lake merritt. flames broke out about 2:45 at the merritt restaurant and bakery near lakeshore avenue. took crews two hours to put it out. no reports of injuries. this isn't the first time a

bakery has caught fire n 2006 the fire caused about $150,000 in damage. merritt restaurant and bakery first opened in 1953. two of the four survivors of the deadly limousine fire on the san mateo bridge are doing better this morning. the fire has also sparked new conversations this morning among lawmakers about how to keep californians better protected in limousines. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the san mateo bridge with more. >> reporter: good morning, laura. that 1999 stretch lincoln town car that caught fire saturday night trapping and killing those five women was not required to have a fire extinguisher. and public utilities commission, which regulates limos didn't require it to undergo safety inspections because it carries less than ten people. they want to look into what can

be done about the safety inspections and also to carry fire extinguishers. one woman's husband, whose wife was killed, blames the limo driver. >> i will be the only one that goes with them when we go out. >> reporter: out for a bridal party with eight friends, celebra celebrating the bride soon to be married but also killed in that fire. she would have been wearing this dress on her wedding day as seen in this photo obtained by the philippine daily enquirer. bob redell, "today in the bay." san bruno pipeline

explosion, attorneys could soon take on chevron for the august fire. the fire injured several refinery workers and sent more than 15,000 to area hospitals suffering with respiratory probl problems. the cause was traced to a leaking pipe inside one of the refineries crude units. holding a meeting to review its spending for the year, focusing on funds for measure a, tax initiative adopted in 2000 to provide money for transit improvements. tonight's meeting will allow the public to comment on the funding and whether it is being spent appropriately. the meeting starts at 6:00 pm on north first street. it is 5:05 right now. christina loren very busy. check back in to get that wednesday forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you. we still have that unstable pattern going, jon and laura. you don't need that heavy coat. you might want to carry that

umbrella with you, especially if you're picking up in the east bay, north bay. fair game for showers today. light, pesky shower. you might be using your windshield wipers from time to time. we've got sures coming down from the bay area all the way south to bakersfield this morning. point out the biggest difference between yesterday and today, that is the return of the low cloud cover. wherever you see the white shading is mostly cloudy conditions except for the peninsula. and that fog will continue to lower. we are expecting visibility to drop off through the next few hours. we'll keep you update d. 64 at the coast, 73 inland and 68 in the bay. warmer days are just around the corner. 5:06. maybe you're heading around the corner off to work. mike is here to help you get there. >> just around the corner from the on-ramp, university southbound side moving down toward the oregon expressway.

on the map, we do see voslowing out of mountain view. stalled vehicle we have reports of. slowing over the past couple of minutes through the area. should be moved to the shoulder over to oregon expressway quickly. we'll track this as there is an issue. drive over across both bridges heading over there. little slowing shows up, blips at times. 92 and 84. no incidents reported on either span. castro valley y. easy valley through san leandro and castro valley as well. oakland coliseum, earlier construction crews moving you over to the left. all has cleared. and lanes are reopened following the overnight construction closures. bolts becoming a public relations nightmare for that

bridge and officials. how crews plan to fix those busted bolts. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is in the newsroom with all the details. >> bridge and transportation officials are getting together in oakland today to look at a couple of options that could be the answer to the brittle bolt problem that's been plaguing the new eastern span of the bay bridge since march. initially, 32 of the span's 288 bolts snapped because of excess hyd hyd hyd hydrogen in the steel. they'll decide between one of two clamp-like options. another problem they'll be looking at, broken steel rods that are supposed to help control the movement of the bridge during an earthquake. >> this entire batch of rods from 2008 is essentially worthless. so, in order to achieve that same level of sieismic performance a substitute needs to be put in place. >> testing is under way on 192 bolts and rods produced two

years later in 2010. crew crews are listening for cracks that may be developing and also applying immense pressure to make sure that they are sturdy enough to leave in place for decades. good news is that so far officials say that equipment is holding up. as for the faulty bolts and rods, we'll see how transportation officials plan to fix that problem when their meeting gets under way at 9:30 in downtown oakland. laura and jon? >> thank you so much. >> appreciate it. 5:09. bay area city is dubbed the robbery couple of the u.s. a look inside its room it won't let most of its employees into. the dow will open this morning above 15,000 for the first time ever. what in the world is going on? we'll take a look, coming up.

yahoo! this morning, partner over in china, alibaba posting profits. jack ma came up with the name alibaba while sitting in a san francisco coffee shop. yahoo! owns part of alibaba so ma's success is marissa mayer's success as well. we join seema mody over at cnbc headquarters. futures flat after the dow clo closed at future highs yesterday, above 15,000 for the first time. it's been a rapid rise. first closed at 13,000 in february 2012. it took a year to hit 14,000 but a few months from 14,000 to 15,000. more than twice it's gain in 2012. the dow rising 87, the nasdaq adding 3. back to you. >> seema, thank you. tesla reports its profits today. the company made all kind of

interesting improvements lately, adding a leasing deal and promising tesla owners the company will replace the battery if anything goes wrong. battery is really the worry in an electric car. tesla continues to succeed both for investors and for the government, which loaned it money. the direct opposite, jon and laura, is fiskar. when you measure the fiskar debacle not by how much money the government lost but how much private capital lost, the private guys, it's a bigger loss than solyndra, raising $1 billion in private money that it now lost. solyndra only raised about $800 million. >> only. >> yeah. >> fisker was a good-looking car. unfortunately didn't last. christina loren is back to talk about our wednesday forecast. >> not a lot of sunshine for today, guys. we'll bring it back just in time for mother's day weekend. 5:15 now on a wednesday morning. don't you have to give yourself

any extra time just yet due to the low clouds and fog. your visibilities will continuously drop off, though, as we head throughout the morning. fog is back in the bay area. temperatures are really mild to start. good morning to you, sunnyvale. you're at 58. 54 to start the day in san mateo and redwood city is at 55 degrees. throughout the day today you can see we have showers along the sierra nevada. light showers wrapping around the bay area. nothing too heavy just yet. the moisture continues to push to the east. as we head throughout the day today, high pressure will start to build in. high pressure compresses any moisture that is left over in our atmosphere. we have the return of low clouds today. that means we'll see pretty thick fog tomorrow morning as well. when it comes to showers, we stop the clock for you at 9:00 am. little activity in the north bay. especially through the interior valleys today. same deal for the south bay about 2:00 pm. we'll ramp up that chance 20% to 30%. stop that clock for you again as we head throughout tomorrow morning. temperatures are going to be

101 very easy drive through san rafael. starting to pick up the commute direction here. repair work at the golden gate bridge. just got word from the golden gate authority and she said all lanes are open. everything is clear now. that's good news coming into the city. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. earlier, we told you that oakland checked in on a certain list as the most exciting city in the entire nation. now it's being dubbed, unfortunately, the robbery capital of america. oakland tribune looking at fbi figures to determine oakland has more robberies per resident than any other city in the entire country. one robbery for every 91 residents last year, the highest robbery rate of any major american city since back in 2000. compared to other bay area cities, oakland leads this one by far with 851 robberies per 100,000 residents in 2011. san francisco a mere 298 while in san jose, just 115. follow-up this morning.

san francisco has given initial approval to create a 25-foot buffer zone around planned parenthood entrances in the city. legislation extends the current eight-foot bubble. there will be a vote next week for final approval. mountainview city council has voted to buy a densely wooded piece of land. the city will pay $3 million for the more than one-acre property. no decision on what will be done with that land but most likely be turned into a park or open space with a community garden. the city will hold public meetings at a later date to discuss potential uses. it's not too often an l.a. dodger gets cheered for doing something at at&t park. matt kemp after this video goes viral, showing him handing over the shirt and hat off his body and shoes off his feet to a dodgers fan this sunday at at&t park. that fan's name is swrosh. kemp is told josh is suffering

with cancer and may only have a few months or so to live. kemp took the the jersey right off, shoes, the hat. just a little something he says he felt would hopefully cheer the fan up. now that is a good guy. >> he said it wasn't planned at all. >> not at all. >> he just did it. >> big heart. >> he lost a cousin, i hear, recently to cancer. so it kind of really hit home. >> hopefully that helps to brighten his spirit. great role model, matt kemp. coming up, the man credited with helping three women escape after being held in cap activity.

hope f hopefully, good. christina loren says a little bit of everything weatherwise. plans to name san francisco international airport after harvey milk have been scrapped. council wanted to put the issue to the voters. the city didn't want to hold a costly election on the issue. after weeks of negotiations with the mayor's office, campos settled for naming a terminal for milk. no word on exactly which terminal would get the new name. have you seen this? one minute he is at home, eating a big ma krchc, the next bustinn his neighbor's door. charles ramsey is now considered a national hero, helping to save the lives of three ohio women kidnapped nearly a decade ago. >> love this guy. >> he said he was eating mcdonald's when the scene unfolded monday. the call went viral, turning

tragedy that happened here saturday night on the san mateo bridge. 1999 stretch lincoln town car that caught fire and killed five women was not required to carry a fire extinguisher. this bill would change that. limo was not required to undergo regular safety inspections. public utilities commission that regulates limos doesn't require inspections for limos carrying fewer than ten people, like the one saturday night. hill would like to dig deeper into that issue and see what could be done. geornga lost his wife, felomina. he is left to raise their children on his own. he believes she and her four friends would be here if this legislation was in place. >> the driver is to blame. >> nine women in the back of that limo saturday night were on their way to a bridal party for

neriza fojas. the bride-to-be tragically was among the five women who became trapped and ended up dying in that fire. bob redell, "today in the bay." a fix could soon be on the way for the broken bolts on the bay bridge. getting an update from caltrans on the steel rods that snapped below the bridge deck. additional rods are being tested to go ahead and make sure that problem does not spread. a clamp-like fixture has been proposed as a possible solution. toll authority is expected to approve it at today's meeting. we'll have more details on what that meeting will entail coming up in a live report in our 6:00 hour. traffic finally back to normal on that golden gate bridge this morning. crews had to work through the night to fix a problem with asphalt on the bridge that caused just a major headache for drivers all day yesterday. a spokesman for the bridge now says new asphalt in two lanes of the bridge started to crumble

during yesterday's morning commute, left a lot of large pebbles on the roadway. all lanes of the bridge are now back open. >> 5:33. why a car veered off highway 101 and plunged into the bay overnight. it happened just after midnight near the candle stick park off-ramp in san francisco. chp says the car was headed north on 101 when it left the road and completely went under water. the driver was able to escape unhurt. no one else was in the car. >> this one was a scary scene. firestation in oakland caught in the cross fire. this morning the search is on for a shooter who sent bullets flying through that station, narrowly missing firefighters. christie smith has more details on what was nothing short of than a wild night. >> reporter: i just spoke off camera with one of the firefighters who was actual ly

here when the bullets started flying, went right through this firestation and shattered windows. he tells me three firefighters were inside at the time, and had to duck for cover. this is where the bullets actually came out. the shooting started on the back side of the station. we just took some new pictures this morning. firefighters had just returned from a call when they say they heard the unmistakable sound of dozens of rounds of gunfire outside. fortunately, no firefighters were hurt here. but, boy, what a night it was. just up the block, a man had been shot in a hail of bullets. he was taken to highland hospital where he later died. the bullets that struck station 18 went all the way through the apparatus bay where the trucks are parked. that firefighter tells me he couldn't go on camera. he is still on duty here this morning. rattled nerves. but otherwise unharmed. he tells me that the bullets actually came through and pierced another building and shattered glass across the street. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much for the

5:41. welcome back, everyone. explosive testimony expected about whether the u.s. could have stopped the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, but didn't. four americans, including bay area native ambassador chris stevens, died last fall. tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill with what the testimony is expected to be. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. gregory hicks, number two in libya, chief of mission formerly in libya. he will tell congress today as he did privately -- and we now have transcripts of that -- that he asked for more help when this attack was going on in benghazi,

that there were special forces troops in tripoli dressed, ready to go at the plane when they were told no from the pentagon. the pentagon reaction is that they couldn't go because they were protecting the embassy in tripoli. could fire jets have been scrambled over that consulate in benghazi to scare off these attackers? this was a very long attack from 9:00 at night until after 6:00 in the morning. the pentagon says no, they couldn't get in the air. they couldn't get refueled. these are some of the questions lawmakers want answered today in addition to what about the review board? the review after the fact? were they tough enough? why didn't they question secretary of state clinton? all those questions coming up today, laura. >> no ambassador there in the past eight months. are they any closer to having someone replace stevens? >> reporter: the hearing for the nominee to replace him happened just yesterday. deborah kay jones was saying

replacing chris stevens is going to be a tough job, even tougher now because things are not as in control now as they were back then. she says we've had setbacks as a result of that office being open for eight months now. >> interesting to see. thank you very much, tracie. one we'll continue to follow. an ongoing tragedy with new information in our newsroom from overseas, police now saying 800 people have decide as a result that have building collapse in bangladesh, two weeks ago. and crews are still trying to recover bodies of all the victims there. the area rht now, they're not sure how many bodies are still locked and buried under all that debris. >> so sad. investigators in ohio worked through the night to sift through evidence in the cleveland house where three women were allegedly held captive for ten years. the fbi brought in industrial into the home and moved out

boxes. it could take several days to complete the semp of that house. the three suspects, ariel, o'neal and pedro castro will be questioned today from the cleveland's sex crimes division. three women and 6-year-old rescued from that home are prortdly doing very well. amanda berry, gina dejesus and michele knight. police are taking a slow approach because the women are most likely suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. former los angeles police officer turned suspected killer will now be split three ways. massive manhunt for christopher dorner took place back in february after he allegedly killed four people, including two law enforcement officers. lapd now says the couple who called police after being held hostage by dorner inside their cabin in big bear will receive 80% of that reward, translating to $800,000. a man who found dorner's burning truck will get 15%.

5:47. pleasanton police robbed a chase bank yesterday morning near hawk yard road. need your help this morning nabbing a robber who showed up in an unusual disguise. take a look at the pictures showing the robber posed as a subcontractor april 25th and asked to talk to a manager. he was armed with a gun and told the manager to open the safe. the manager put money in the bag and the robber took off in a white car believed to be a prius. woman accused of kidnapping an 11-month-old baby is expected to return to court this morning. carla hernandez, child endangerment and auto theft. stole an suv with a little baby girl inside that car seat in the back. kidnapping led to a massive
