"today in the bay." it is 6:00. good morning, everybody. thank you very much for getting up early with us. i'm jon kelley. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news in san jose where police just took a stabbing suspect into custody this morning accused of attacking a 21-year-old man at his ownc;ñ birthday party. "today in the bay's" marla tallez live at the scene where she spoke to neighbors about the arrest and the yard to yard

search going in overnight in san jose's cambrian neighborhood. police had this entire park behind us. this is doerr park. as you mentioned in the cambrian district. their suspect has been identified as 20-year-old peter bruneto of san jose. he was found inside the park in the pool area after officers did a yard to yard search. he is now in the santa clara county jail. the search for him started soon after police got a 911 call that came in about 1:15 for a report of a stabbing. they arrived to find four people left at what had been a small birthday party at a home on custer drive for the 21-year-old man who was actually stabbed. the two were friends. they got into a fight. the suspect stabbed him several times with a knife and took off running into doerr park.

>> we got information that the suspect might be in the park at doerr park. we immediately set up a perimeter around the pashlg. we just went house to house, yard to yard and found him in the pool area of the park here at doerr. >> reporter: i talked to a couple of neighbors that were surprised to hear this. they said the neighborhood is extremely safe. one woman tells she is only worried about the victim. >> mostly concerned for the young man. hopefully, he will be very good. that's a terrible thing to happen. as a neighbor, i probably have seen him many times if i don't know him. mostly, my thoughts are with the family. hopefully, he will be just fine. >> reporter: police are not releasing the name of the 21-year-old who was stabbed. he did not take an ambulance to the hospital. one of his friends at the party took him to good samaritan. he was first listed in critical condition. but he has since improved and police say he is recovering and he will be okay. live from san jose, marla

tallez, "today in the bay." happening right now, on capitol hill, we will give you a live look as lawmakers are holding a hearing to try nd aant to the bottom of the boston marathon bombings. the police commissioner and the security chief will be set to answer a question about what they knew about the suspect. and if that information was ever shared with boston police. back in 2011, russia, asked the fbi and cia, to look into tsarnaev's possible radical ties. they found nothing. when russia failed to cooperate after that, the fbi closed the case. boston police commissioner, edward davis, says, so far, there is no evidence the feds were holding anything back. we will, of course, continue to monitor this hearing and we will bring you any and all updates throughout the morning as we get them. >> a former school bus driver accused of holding three women hostage for nearly ten years inside an ohio home, has just

made his first court appearance. we have video to show you. 52-year-old ariel castro in court minutes ago. police say the women were tied up with ropes and chains and were kept in different rooms. the women vanished separately between 2002 and 2004. at the time, they were 14, 16, and 20 years old. police initially took castro's two older brothers into custody. they have not been charged due to a lack of evidence. they too were in court but only on unrelated open container charges. >> oakland has a new top cop this morning after chief, howard jordan, announces he is stepping down for medical reasons. the timing of the departure has a lot of people wondering if something else influenced that decision. the city of oakland. city leaders were saying they were completely surprised about i this announcement, howard jordan stepping down after just 19 months on the job. he is citing an undisclosed medical condition as the reason. some are wondering if there is more to it as a new report is coming out. for now, anthony terivio, a 23-year-old veteran, will serve as the interim police chief. it came one week aft department ae aets's overseer issued a report for not holding officers accountable. john burress says he believes that jordan retired before he was asked to leave. jordan said, he wasn't forced out at all. this was his choice. the head of the police officer's union said jordan called him personally to deliver the news. >> many of us here at the association and rank and file officers certainly did not always agree with the chief but none of us would wish this type of illness on him, him becoming

sick. we wish him and his family all the best. >> reporter: another report critical of this department is expected to be released today. nbc bay area obtained a copy of the bratton group report and it points to a lack of accountability and suggests a complete restructure of the department. saying burglaries are not investigated in the city of oakland with only one part-time investigator assigned to 10,000 burglaries last year. oakland beginning a nationwide search for a new chief. this will be the fifth since 2004. reporting live in oakland, kristy sni christie smith, "today in the bay." christina was calling it sweater weather. >> you have your sweater on. >> i listened to her. >> i think you are setting a trend. it is sweater weather. just about everywhere you are waking up with the exception of fairfield, a full deck of crowds overhead.

under control. i will track that. meanwhile, the other side of the bay, a smooth approach to the san mateo bridge and the commute direction will be westbound no. problems on the sfan. 580, a nice, easy flow out of livermore into dublin. a new crash westbound at vasco may be causing more backup. that might be why we see a little bit of relief coming in towards livermore and pleasanton. i will track that as well as the big slowing shows up. the metering lights are turned on at the bay bridge. i can see them right there. >> thank you very much. hayward police searching through surveillance video to track down a suspect that an officer fires shots at at a dmv parking lot. the suspect in his late teens or early 20s. police say he responded with a gun and took off when an officer chased him yesterday. he says the armed suspect pointed the gun at him. that's when the officer opened fire. police do not believe the suspect was hit.

>> a message from the chp. officers are now asking people, please, please do not place memorial items out on the bridge. it is unsafe and can cause driving hazards. five women died on the bridge saturday night when the limo burst into flames. four other women and the driver managed to escape. one of the women, jasmine desguia was released yesterday. nelia ar rian know was released earlier this week. 48-year-old amalia ariana isç listed in fair condition and the fourth driver is at stanford wi condition unknown they are calling it teamwork to the extreme. >> we ran out there as a team. the guys all got around the car and everyone lifted it up. there was very little talking. >> we are going to tell you how this northern california

ariel castro, the man that kidnapped three women and held them captive, in court this morning a man in the hospital after being stabbed at his 21st birthday party in san jose. he was stabbed at a home in the cambrian neighborhood in doerr park early this morning. they arrested the suspect about three hours later. marla tallez on the scene will here is a question. did mark zuckerberg spend another billion of facebook's money? >> reuters is saying facebook is willing to pay that kind of money to buy a traffic reporting system. why does facebook care about sflafk. >> i think because the users care about traffic. one of the first things that young people do is check facebook. they are considering purchasing israeli company waze. facebook would pay this man $1

billion, the founder, for waze. it seems staggering. mark zuckerberg offered the founder of instagram $1 billion and he didn't even check with the facebook board first. other facebook news. at&t has dropped the price of its so-called facebook phone from $99 to 99 cents. this despite the fact that it has only been on the market a few weeks. at&t says such sales are normal and do not reflect the popularity of the phone. san francisco's yelp fighting a lawsuit in virginia trying to prevent a carpet cleaning company from learning the identities of yelpers who gave the service a bad rating. the cleaner says, bad ratings hurt business. a lower court said yelp had to turn over seven names but they haven't done that. on wednesday,( consumer group, public citizens, got involved, arguing the carpet cleaner should have to prove it is not a bad carpet cleaner before suing anyone for saying it is a bad carpet cleaner. tesla posted its first full

quarter profit making $15 million. more importantly, the company said the cost of building its mod mod model "s" car has gone down. it was all around good news. $15 million. google makes more than that every single work day. for an electric car company, it is amazing. not even going bankrupt is now the bar that most electric car companies have set. tesla is way above that bar. new video of a dramatically before and after. on the left, the iconic movie theater dome on pleasant hill and what it looks like now. the city council voting to tear the dome down. not just east bay dealing with dome demolition. bob redell is live in san jose where they are trying to stop the very same thing from happening at the winchester

movie theater dome. >> preservationists have started an online petition to stop any developers from potentially destroying these dome theaters, three of them on winchester boulevard. they are trying to persuade the city of san jose with this petition to declare this a historic landmark and save it from a wrecking crew. they have good reason to be concerned. the city has made it clear it would like to see this 11 1/2 acre parcel developed for housing and retail. preservationists say this would add more traffic to an area also clogged with shoppers going to santana row. they argue cinearts complex is just too small. there is the sense of nostalgia. the these theaters grew up watching films here. to see it, for them, destroyed, would be heartbreaking. that being said, only 28 people

have signed this online petition to preserve these theaters in the south bay. in pleasant hill, an online petition. 4,000 people signed that. you can see how much good it did. yes, there was back and forth with the city council. finally, the pleasant hill city council told the developer, hey, go ahead. you can develop that land. yesterday, they did destroy that dome theater in pleasant hill. in the coming months, they will be developing that land and putting in a sportings center. pleasant day ahead minus the thick, low clouds. we will take it inland. that's going to keep us cool at the coast. a give-and-take. mostly cloudy for the first part of the day. all the way through noon in san francisco, this is what we are working with this morning at 6:18. this is san bruno. right now, the fog is not that bad at the surface. from 500 to 1,000 feet.

that's why you can see. we only have visibility here at about 20 feet or better. would i say 20-50 feet. not looking too good. as we head throughout the day, we are going to continue to see the flight delays as well until the fog clears. i think it will clear by about noon. we have the cool, onshore flow. these cities reporting winds out of the west where we are getting the nice, cool, pacific air. it is going to be mostly cloudy to start the day. two-hour flight delays out of sfo. we will letslir+á)jju when this changes. we are getting a little bit more flight delay out of new york city if you are trying to get over to the east coast. we are getting closer and closer mother's day weekend. a lot of people will be traveling to see one of the most important women in their life, mom. 54 to start the day. crisp in campbell at 49 degrees. as we head throughout the day, high pressure starts to build in. this is going to bring about a much warmer pattern. make sure you are ready for that. you will be bringing out the

summertime wardrobe. highs today work out like this. 75, inland. 70, bayside. 63 at the coast. we are going to warm you up for friday and mother's day. nice and warm. not too hot for mom this year. monday through wednesday, things start to change. we are going to drop your temperatures off and bring in a few showers. it is 6:20. the south bay is starting to show your build. a thursday. a nice flow of traffic northbound 101, a little slowing as well as 87 and 85. a gentle start typical for this time of day. an earlier crash around the 680/280 interchange. no problem as far as the lanes go. no issue. just that northbound route we are concerned about. looking at the peninsula, 101 through palo alto, an easy drive. no problems northbound past university and in towards san mateo and san francisco. the southbound side equally as

smooth. the fremont side, looking at the east bay and 880. picking up the volume as you are passing tesla. showing a proflt there. we will look at the maps down in the same area. approaching the mission merge. a little slowing across. not a big deal. slowing through livermore and pleasanton through 84. a little lighter for dublin. two or three cars involved. that's causing the slowdown approaching vasco. back to you. >> this is a remarkable story. some sacramento area baseball players being hailed as heroes for saving a girl trapped beneath a car. valley high baseball team was was practicing outside. a student trapped right under her mother's car. the players said, instincts kicked in. they jumped into action lifting

"today in the bay's" tracie potts live on capitol hill. the hearing started about half an hour ago. what have we learned so far? >> reporter: so far, opening statements, after we take a live look at the hearing, senator joe lieberman, they want his input along with boston authorities. one of the key witnesses today

to be questioned is boston's police commissioner, edward davis. what authorities want to know, what the lawmakers here want to know, is did boston authorities coordinate with the feds two years ago when they first got that tip from the russians that tamerlan tsarnaev may have been involved in some radical activity. the focus on this hearing today is going to be coordination and cooperation. was it there? did boston have any clue what was going on in their backyard when the feds were first looking into disconnection with the tsarnaev brothers. they are going to try to take a closer look after the bombings and what happened in the capturing and killing of the suspects. president obama and janette napolitano all depending the fbi saying they used what information they had when they had it. finally, laura, it is worth noting that catherine russell,

austin is a cool down, specially by texas standards. texas is willing to talk to anybody about jobs, except us. nbc bay area contacted the texas governor's office several times over the past couple of days when we learned about the president's trip. we did it by phone and e-mail. no results. texas has been courting our companies. recently, a small company in morgan hill said it would leave for texas. ask governor rick perry out of texas. he visited the bay area looking for businesses to take back with him and left us with this radio ad. >> building a business is tough but i hear building a business in california is next to impossible. this is texas governor, rick perry. i have a message for california businesses. come check out texas. >> now, president obama will visit applied teerlsz materials

some slowing from tully up toward the airport. we are seeing the drive kicking in. the approach up into downtown, from 85 up to 87 in towards los gatos, some slowing. pretty typical for the south bay. some slowing south 280 as you are heading down toward the winchester boulevard off ramp. the kick-in is sticking around. no incidents reported. i'll track that and check around to see if we can find anything. so far, just a censor issue as far as i can tell. an easy drive westbound over to the peninsula. we will take a look at the east bay live. we will see oakland shows a nice, easy, northbound route. the high-street high rise. the southbound side shows the build to the volume. no slowing into hayward. over here, approaching the bay bridge westbound 80 with all these lights underneath university, the eastshore freeway, still close. a little slowing at the berkeley

another deadly fire at a garment factory in bangladesh. all of the victims died from suffocation as they tried to run down the stairs. that fire comes two weeks after a massive blaze took down an eight-story garment factory in the very same city. this one, more than 900 people were killed and what some are calling the worst disaster of the global garment industry. more than 2500 people have been pulled out alive from all this rubble here. a huge disa+slw and very tragic. investigators say at least three floors were illegally built. there have been several arrests, including the owner of that

lawmakers in washington hearing from the police commissioner about the boston bombings. they want to know whether the fbi shared any information on the older suspect, tamerlan tsarnaev, on the bombing. >> we have to review this to make sure it does not happen br again. we are in the process of doing that. it is hard to say what we could have done differently. >> in 2011, russia asked the fbi

and cia to look into tsarnaev's possible radical ties. they found nothing. today's hearing, the first of what's likely to be several hearings on the bombings. 6:35. new video of the first public court hearing for a former school bus driver accused of kidnapping and raping three women over a period of ten years, holding them captive. craig melvin live in cleveland, ohio, this morning, about new details about the hearing and the ongoing investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. ariel castro, 52 years old, in court a short time ago. he did not utter a word. in fact, he hung his head throughout the course of that hearing. he also did not enter a plea. we are told that within 30 days, he will do that. that's when the case will also go before a grand jury. his bond was set at $8 million. he would have to come up with 800 thousand. that is not likely to p ha. meanwhile, the two other

brothers, the two other castro brothers, onil castro and pedro castro, throughout much of yesterday, we thought they would also be charged in connection with this case. that did not happen. in fact, they were both charged with some misdemeanors and were told that the two castro brothers will be released from jail in just a few hours. meanwhile, the investigation continues. the fbi evidence gathering team was on site yesterday. those white clean suits were gabrielle giffor going through not just primary evidence but a boarded-up home down. a cadaver dog went in and circled the house. at this point, we are not told precisely what it was they were able to capture. we are told that that search was a result of an initial conversation with ariel castro. meanwhile, the three girls held

captive here for three years, two of them are out of the hospital, as you saw yesterday. those powerful images of gina dejesus being reunited with her family. amanda berry being reunited with her family. michele knight, that first girl, who was taken captive, michele knight, is the only one of the three still in the hospital. we are told that she is in good condition but at this point, no word on precisely when she is going to be released. meanwhile, back here on the west side of cleveland, tonight, 7:00, a public meeting. just about every public official in the city along with community leaders and faith leaders are going to assemble in the church behind me down the street. they will be talking about, among other things, the relationship or lack there of between the police and this neighborhood. that's the very latest from cleveland, laura. >> we'll see how things change as they unite. thank you very much, craig. the time is 6:47. we are watching the weather for you. give you a live look over san

during the search overnight in san jose's cambrian neighborhood. good morning. >> reporter: that yard to yard search happened in this quiet suburban neighborhood less than a mile from a middle school. ÷ is down here. the closest major cross streets are lee and kurtner. doerr park is behind us. this is where the 20-year-old suspect was taken into custody when we arrived about 3:45. police had this park surrounded. then, about 4:15, three hours after police received the 911 call that put their search into motion, they found 20-year-old peter brunetto hiding in the pool area of doerr park. police say he stabbed his 21-year-old friend several times with a knife at a small house party on custer drive, close by. the kicker is, the party was for the man who was stabbed. he was celebrating his 21st birthday. police say the two had gotten into a fight and that's when things got out of hand. i spoke to a woman who has lived

dome theaters. you have five here as far as the winchester theater complex. they are trying to persuade the is thety to declare this area a historic landmark and save it from a wrecking crew. the city has made it clear they would like to see this 11-acre parcel developed for housing and retail. preservationists argue that would add more traffic to an area that is already clogged with shoppers going to santana row. movi movi moviegoers would have to travel further. these theaters have been here for almost 50 years. this is where many people saw their first film. to see it destroyed would be heartbreaking. that being said, only 28 people assigned this online petition so far to preserve these theaters here in san jose. to give you some compare ton, in pleasant hill, an online petition.
