"today in the bay." >> good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. i'm jon kelley. we have breaking news to tell you about right now. a bizarre scene playing out in the south bay as a van crashes

into a san jose hospital. crews at the santa clara valley medical center near the 280 highway, actually, the 280 and highway 17 intersection, "today in the bay's" marla tallez joining us now. what do you see? what can you tell us? >> reporter: from this perspective, we can't show you much. i can tell you that just down the block on baskin avenue is one of the main hospital entrances. that's where we found a mini-van that crashed into the main lobby entrance there. quite a sight to see. there are plenty of emergency crews on scene. right in the main hospital lobby of building m. the van is now parked inside shattering all the glass doors. that includes the police and the sheriff's dep it is. there is a tow truck on scene about to take the mini-van away. we are hearing reports that the van's driver has been detained. we are also hearing that a hospital janitor may have been

hurt in this crash. we are waiting to get both confirmed. i have put calls into san jose police. i'm also about to call the hospital to get the very latest information. the whole front entrance to santa clara valley medical center is completely under construction. it is hard to maneuver yourself around. there are plenty of barriers and detours, as is. from my perspective, i'm not sure how this happened, how this driver crashed right into the hospital's main lobby there but it is there. we saw it with our own eyes. we took a couple pictures to show you. that's the latest from here. live in san jose, marla tallez, "today in the bay." people in concord taking matters into their own hands to try and catch a pair of bold criminals that burglarized a community center. tay a look at this surveillance center. you can see two men entering the community center. one appears to either have a key or he picked that lock to the door. then, just a short time later,

the two men walked out of the building carrying a large plasma television. this happened about three weeks ago. officials at the community center, they say they wanted to wait to release the video for safety reasons. they nour asking for the public's help in trying to identify these thieves. concord police also looking for this guy, who broke into a a tj max store. he made off with an indisclosed amount of merchandise the sailing community is in shock after a crash killed an america's cup sailer on the san francisco bay. christie smith joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. we are expecting a press conference a little bit later this morning to shed more light on exactly what went wrong in this horrible sailing accident. i want to step aside and draw your attention. right behind this fence, there is a fence in the distance and

behind that, you can sort of see a red image. that's what we are talking about after a practice run for the america's cup. the "artemis" capsized, tossing 11 crew members into the water. the 72-foot swedish boat suddenly overturned. ten of the crew members got to a support boat. they were okay. 32-year-old andrew simpson did not survive. investigators believe he was trapped under the boat for at least 10 minutes. this happened at around 1:15 in the afternoon. he died despite frantic efforts to try and sail him. the sailing efforts say the winds were pretty good when the boat capsized at about 25 miles an hour. they were practicing in the windiest part of the bay. >> between the golden gate bridge and alcatraz, the wind is between 10% and 50% stronger than any place else in the bay. the san francisco police are investigating after the accident. the team arrived by boat at the

"artemis" headquarters in alameda. the team ceo saying at this point, the focus is on simpson's family and his teammates. some fans just wondered if perhaps these 72-foot boats are just too big to operate. a big tragedy. andrew simpson was a british sailer, one of the best in the world. he won a gold medal at the beijing olympics in 2008 and silver last year in london. this would have been his first america's cup race. friends and fellow sailers say he was perpetually happy and the heart and soul of the team. he leaves behind a wife and two children. if you want to know more about simpson or the crash, head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. search america's cup. you and i have been talking about this. the america's cup has a rough go of everything they are trying to do out there. it seems like a whispering curse or something.

markets do look strong this morning. japan's central bank dumped a ton of yen on to the market. we called it an all-in bet. that could spark the economy with cheap money and that appears to have worked. wall street likes that. what a week, jon and laura, it has been for tesla. the stock up 25% thursday. after the company posted a profit. now, this morning, consumer reports says the tesla s is one of the best cars they have ever tested out of a perfect 100 points. the tesla s got a 99. jon and i were talking about this, if i didn't have a kid going to college, jon, you and i would be in a race to get one of these snazzy cars. >> that's a sexy ride. >> maybe we can hook it up and go for a joyride. >> maybe we could share one. >> can i get in on that too, boys? >> yeah. we need your funds. >> thank you very much. appreciate it, scott. we have some pretty cool video to show you of this. this is a shot of the solar

eclipse called the ring of fire. this one blanketed parts of australia in the south pacific. the outer space phenomenal happens when the moon passions in front of the sun. since the moon is smaller in size, you can see that thin rim of light beaming there. very cool. it almost looks perfect. the next solar eclipse will be in november. unfortunately, everybody here in the bay area, we won't be able to catch it. we will bring it to you and put it on tv to catch it out. i like to call that the johnny cash eclipse. >> one thing you always get to see here in the bay area, pretty decent weather. temperatures are going down, down, down. they are going the opposite warks as a matter of fact. 5:16. a good-looking day shaping up. thanks for waking up with us, specially all the moms out there. it is your big weekend. weather is going to be nice all across the board.

you can hit the mountains, the beach and inland, it is not going to be too hot. 53, sunnyvale and livermore. we are expecting to see these numbers fall a touch. we do have some low ceilings. although, happy to report right now if you are trying to head out of town to visit mom, all flights on time out of san francisco. every other major airports. we are going to keep you updated. those low ceilings could become problematic as they did yesterday. this is our warming agent as we head throughout the next couple days, we are going to gradually warm you up each day through sunday. 81, livermore, 81, gilroy. 73 degrees in fremont. 64 at the coast today. not too bad. you are still going to hit the 60s. temperatures will be comfortable. we have an area of low pressure slated to move through a very weak disturbance. as we head through monday into

tuesday, that's going to drop our temperatures and potentially bring some showers to the north bay. models do not agree right now. all our computer models are in severe disagreement as a matter of fact. there is a slight chance for showers as we head through monday into tuesday. we'll keep you updated. right now, i'm not buying it. i'll let you know as soon as i do. 5:18. let's find out what mike is selling u selling us on the road this sunday. looking over here, a smooth drive down the eastshore freeway and across the bay bridge. no problems into san francisco. once you do approach the area, looking at southbound 101. heading up toward the lower deck. reports of a crash there blocking one lane. it is right near the transition. this is also a surface street at a critical transition where we often see a slowdown. watch for one lane still blocked. down the peninsula, no issues, except for 280 and 92.

still reports of the crash. sounds like everything is at the lanes. watch for the activity. we have been tracking it carefully. nothing unusual as far as the flow on 92 or for 280 down for the peninsula. south bay moves very smoothly. northbound 17 at hamilton, a crash reported at the an ramp. it is open. 17 doesn't show any slowing. many could go through dublin and pleasanton, smooth. a quick look at oakland. we will end with this shot past the coliseum. roaracle arena, a big crowd for the game tonight. south bay daycare center closed this morning after state inspectors uncovered some very disturbing practices. investigators say caretakers at the stephanie daycare center in milpitas locked an infant in an upstairs closet on multiple occasions. the baby was strapped in a car

seat forced to face the back wall of the closet. the state accuses the owner of not conducting criminal background checks on their staff. >> that is ridiculous. 5:20. attorney general, camilla harris going after one of the biggest banks for allegedly abusing the court system. she claims jpmorgan chase flooded the state's court with questionable lawsuits for credit card debt. they filed thousands of lawsuits from 2008 to 2011. harris accusing jpmorgan of cutting corners on debt collection to cut costs. jpmorgan has not commented on the suit. sacramento area woman is in jail after she came up with a creative way to quit spoking. the 31-year-old slapped a v sacramento sheriff's deputy along the face so he would lock

good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. i'm jon kelley. we have breaking news to tell you about in san jose. investigators are trying to figure out why a van crashed right into a hospital. this happened about an hour ago at the santa clara valley medical center across in san jose city college. "today in the bay's" marla tallez, first on scene there. what are you seeing now and what are the officials telling you? >> good morning. here we are at the main hospital entrance on baskin avenue. around the bend as you enter the hospital. once you get past the construction zone, once you get past there, that's where you are going to find this mini-van that has crashed into the main lobby area there. it has caused quite i scene as you can imagine with hospital employees standing around trying to get a good look. the mini-van is hard to miss as it is now sitting in the lobby area where you typically walk in. to get there, it had to shatter the glass doors. it has some front end damage of

its own fou. as to how it happened, we are waiting to get details from the hospital and the santa clara sheriff department. plenty of deputies are on scene. they are investigating. the initial report came in after 4:15 this morning. a major accident. a tow truck has the mini-van loaded up and we are expecting it to make its departure any minute now. we are hearing the mini-van driver has been detained. a janitor may have been hurt. we are waiting to get both pieces of information confirmed for her. if somebody needs to make their way to the e.r. today, that is not a problem. that entrance is not blocked off by any stretch. there is also an entrance on moorpark, which is the cross street here. that's the latest for now in san jose. marla tallez, "today in the bay." we also have breaking news this bangladesh where rescue workers say they have pulled a survivor from the wreckage of the building 17 days after it

collapsed. rescuers say the woman, nailed reshma, was able to get their attention by waving at them from beknead the rubble. rescuers used a hand saw and drilling equipment to cut through the debris that was trapping her. she was in the muslim prayer room of the eight-story building when it collapsed. she was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. the soldiers describe her as being in remarkably good shape despite her ordeal. more than 2500 people have been rescued. more than 1,000 bodies have been pulled from the site. the worst industrial accident ever. investigators trying to find out what caused a fire. that fire broke out at the shopping. it happened at about 3:00 this morning. they did some damage there.

it is near the embarcadero and pal street just west of pier 39. 5:33. we should learn more about what caused a sailboat crash killing an america's cup sailor. christie smith joins us where the boat is docked. >> reporter: we are waiting for a press conference to start a little later this morning to tell us what went wrong here after a trial run for the america's cup turned deadly. now, if you look past the rocks out there, you are going to see the color red. that's the cutting edge sailboat, the "artemis" that tipped off yesterday capsized during a training, trapping a two-ton olympic medalist under it for ten minutes in the water. 11 crew members were tossed in the bay. ten were able to get to support boats but 36-year-old andrew simpson did not survive despite frantic efforts to try and save

him. winds were pretty good when the boat capsized. they are investigating at the headquarters in alameda where some fans wondered if the 72-foot boats are just too big. >> it is scary. it is like you don't want anybody else to die. you don't want it to be a train wreck. >> people shouldn't have to die for this. >> simpson's death followed another wreck in october whether an oracle team usa boat sent its crew flying into the water. the $8 million boat was eventually destroyed as it crashed on the rocks. these type of boats are capable of reaching speeds up to 46 miles an hour. reporting live on treasure island, christie smith, "today in the bay." those who knew andrewká simpson say he was a great s sailor and a great person. he won a gold medal at the

beijing oi limb picks beijing olympics in 2008 and a silver in london. friends say he was the heart and soul of their team. >> one of the nicest guys i ever met, a nice and caring guy, a wife and two kids. not much more to say. >> he was one of those perpetually happy people. he had a little box inside that just gave him a very sunny outlook on life. >> what a sad thing there. this would have marked simpson's very first america's cup race. for the record, it does start in july. san jose detectives are releasing new details about the man wanted for the city's 14th homicide. 55-year-old louie garza is headed to modesta or mo dara. they recently released these photos of his tattoos that cover his front and back. he is accused of shooting and killing another man wednesday afternoon inside a home in east san jose.

a good-looking day shaping up. we want to start with the story of the day. that is the return of the low cloud cover. pretty thick right now in san francisco. we still have flight delays if you are going to be picking your mother up from the airport. maybe you are flying out of town to see mom. we are expecting delays. we will let you know as soon as those come into our newsroom. all these cities still reporting, wind out of the west. our offshore pattern returning. high pressure moves in. we've got a gorgeous weekend shaping up, specially if you are waking up with us right next to the water. 10 miles of visibility are better, specially at santa rosa. a lot of this fog isn't going to make it to the surface. it will whoever at 500 to 1,000 feet. heading over some of the hills today, you might encounter a little bit of fog. by 10:00 a.m., it is going to be located on the coastline. by noon today, completely clear conditions. that bodes well. from 7:00 a.m. through noon,
