tallez first on the scene. a crazy morning out there, marla. >> reporter: it is a pretty wild start to the friday morning out here at santa clara valley medical center. we are at the hospital's main entrance. joining me live is hospital administer. you gave us brand new information. you said this mini-van came careening through the window in the front entrance there about 4:15 this morning. what can you tell us about the driver? >> apparently, he was driving erratically from the e.d. and over to the front of the hospital. just drove the car in to the front window of the hospital. >> how is his condition right now? >> he is stable. >> reporter: there was a janitor who happened to be taking a break in the area when the van crashed through. >> and he had some small scratches from all of the glass from the window shattering. >> reporter: when you say that

you had reports earlier that there was a driver on the property drivinger ra erratical how did that come to your knowledge? >> that did not come directly to me. after the accident, the psos or security had said that they had seen -- it had been reported to them from staff. >> reporter: any indication this driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol? >> i have no idea. >> as far as hospital businesses going on on friday morning, now, i know that drivers are turned away from across the street. what can you tell people if this he need to make their way here this morning? >> to park in our regular public parking. we designated a separate entrance for the patients coming for surgery while we clean all of the glass and make the necessary repairs. we are escorting the patients up personally to make sure they get where they need to go. safety is the most important thing. >> thank you so much for your time this morning.

we also understood that the california highway patrol is the lead agency on this. we will get more information for them as well. that's the latest from here. marla tallez, "today in the bay." we have more breaking news this morning. this time in bangladesh where rescue workers have just found a woman alive inside the wreckage of a garment factory that collapsed 17 days ago. the soldier says bulldozers and crains have be cranes have been ordered to stop work after the woman was spotted waving her hands. they were using drilling equipment to cut through the iron rod and debris that was trapping her. the death toll of the collapse stands at more than 1,000. new this among, this one didn't wake up the sea lions. investigators still on the scene of an overnight fire at forbes island restaurant. the fire broke out at about 3:00 this morning and it is hard to

get to because it is actually out on the water and only accessible by boat. so far, no injuries reported. pier 41 is near the embarcadero and powell street, next to the sea lions at pier 39. wreckage on the water. this morning, america's cup team canceling their sailing plans after a practice run turns deadly in the bay. a sailor was killed. andrew simpson. he won a gold medal in the 2008 beijing olympics and the silver last year in the london games. christie smith live on treasure island with details. >> reporter: there are still so many questions this morning about what went wrong and we're expecting to learn more at a press conference a little bit later today. a two-time olympic medalist killed when the sailboat capsized. if you look just past the rocks in the distance, you will see the color red there at the

bottom. that's the "artemis." it was towed back here to treasure island just after 1:00 yesterday when the 72-foot swedish boat capsized after a practice run for the america's cup which starts in july. there were 11 crew members tossed into the cold bay. ten were able to make it out to a support boat. 36-year-old andrew simpson did not survive despite frantic efforts to try and save him. he was trapped under that boat in the water for ten minutes. sailing experts say the winds were pretty good when the boat capsized, about 25 miles an hour. the team was practicing in the windiest part of the bay. between the golden gate bridge and alcatraz, the wind is between 10-50% stronger than any place else in the bay. san francisco police are investigating the accident. the team arrived by the boat at the "artemis" headquarters in alameda. the team's ceo saying he is focused on simpson's family and the teammates well-being, while some sailing fans are wondering

out loud if the boats are too big, too powerful to ceil. reporting live on treasure island, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> this deadly practice run is the third major crash since crews starting doing practice runs in the bay. in october, team "oracle"'s catamaran capsized. the boat had $2 million worth of damage. back in june of 2011, a 45-foot catamaran owned by "oracle" racing capsized in the bay. sending one crew member through the boat's sail. nobody was injured in that crash either. that was the good news. we will have much more on the deadly crash that just happened in the san francisco bay throughout the morning. all day long at nbc bay areanews.com. search america's cup

the wreckage of the clothing factory, 17 days after it collapsed. rescuers say the woman was in remarkably good shape after the ordeal and could walk when she was freed. she is now being treated at a hospital. investigators looking into the cause of a deadly sailing accident on the san francisco bay that kills an america's cup racer. andrew simpson died in the

"artemis" racing team's catamaran capsized during a training run yesterday afternoon. the chp is investigating how a mini-van crashed through the doors of the valley center medical center in san jose. it crashed in the main lobby off of baskin avenue. the driver is being treated in the hospital's e.r. the man who made news by posting plan force a plastic gun online has taken them off the intd n internet. this after the u.s. government worried about who might download them. >> the man that designed the gun was careful to follow u.s. law. he took down the plans simply because he was asked by the government. the u.s. state department worried about whether the plans might violate u.s. weapons laws. this is the gun before it is assembled. talk of a 3-d plastic gun have been around for years. this gun was successfully printed by a 3-d printer and

test fires, which ups the concern a bit. anyone with a 3-d printer could make a gun and it is all plastic. printed guns probably not going to be a major factor in crimes considering actual guns are easier to obtain. it is easier to buy a real gun than print a plastic one a strong friday for wall street after a loss. new data shows us japan's wild and crazy plans to flood the market with yen. it is working. it is cheapened against the u.s. dollar. that's what japan wanted. it makes their product less expensive for export. what a week it has been for tesla, posting a profit, a 25% jump in the stock yesterday. this morning, consumer report says tesla model "s" scores a 99 out of 100 in its test. one of the finest automobiles they have ever reviewed. the success has presented

can you make out this live picture we are showing you this morning? city by the bay. fog. we are going to check the forecast coming up with meteorologist, christina loren and a look at the all-important weekend forecast. it is mother's day coming at 6:25. jodi arias, the woman in the center of a high-profile murder case who was just found guilty will remain under suicide watch at a psychiatric ward, the move coming after arias told a tv station she preferred the death penalty just minutes after the jury found her guilty of murdering her boyfriend back in 2008. the sentencing was supposed to start today but it has been postponed until next week. in houston, texas, the man accused of stabbing more than a dozen people will be formally charged today.

dillon quick allegedly attacked 14 people at lone star college on april 9th. investigators say quick told them he fantasized about attacking people since he was eight years old. in connecticut, a decision could be made litter on today on the future of the sandy hook elementary school building. a task force will decide whether to tear it down or renovate and reopen it. the building was the scene of the deadly mass shooting last december. 20 first-graders and six educators were all killed during the shooting massacre. >> the sister of martin richard, the young boy killed in the boston marathon bombings continues to recover in the hospital. doctors say 7-year-old jane richard underwent an 11th surgery on wednesday. she lost her left leg below the knee in one of the blasts and will soon be fitted with a prosthetic device. the family says she could be ready for rehabilitation in a few weeks. jane's mother lost sight in one eye and her father suffered

kurtner. it will still be a disstrags. a number of cars, four or five involved as well. dublin, easy drive through the interchange. 84, not so bad through livermore. all those folks are held up. approaching north livermore avenue. an earlier crash on the shoulder there as well. south 880 coming off of 238. the build into hayward and continuing down to union city, southbound nimitz freeway through the area. a typical build but heavier and earlier than we typically see on friday. not a major concern. a smooth drive across the bay. for the san mateo brinl, the dumbarton and 101 and 280 along the peninsula. we are looking good there. we will check, a live look past the oakland coliseum. low clouds through the area. visibility fine for the drivers here. some spots with low clouds. a smooth drive.

breaking news out of!áe bangladesh. rescue workers have pulled out a woman from the garment factory that collapsed 17 days ago. they have been ordered to stop working after cre3eñ spotted tht woman in there waving her hand. they finally saw her. the rescuers had to use a hand saw and drill equipment to finally cut through all the iron and save her life after 17 days. that is just mind-blowing. more than 1,000 bodies have been pulled from all the wreckage there. the search crews there say the death toll still expected to rise unfortunately. the collapse being blamed on faulty construction so, from one rescue, jon, to another. this is amazing new video out of western china, showing rescue efforts after a 3-year-old boy fell into a well some 50-feet

clouds floating around. early in the morning, it started. pretty light backup to the 880 overcrossing. back to you. new details on breaking news in the south bay. spokeswoman at valley medical center just told us the driver who drove a mini-van into the lobby this morning is now being treated in the emergency room. this morning they are changing things for anyone headed there for surgery today. marla tallez, with new information. >> reporter: good morning. talk about being in the right place for some immediate medical attention. the driver who crashed his mini-van into the main lobby window at santa clara valley center was whisked away taken to e.r. where he is reported to be in stable condition. hospital officials say he is going to be just fine. we are getting our very first at the aftermath, at the damage he caused. crews have quickly worked to clean up the broken glass.
