an historic day, may 10th, 2013. from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today." with matt lauer. live from one world trade center and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to this special edition of "today" on a friday morning and wow. take a look at the view from a crane about 105 stories up on the top of one world trade center. a building that is so significant to the people here in new york and all across the country. and savannah, it is a stunning, stunning morning. i'm 1500 feet in the air and you are at sea level. savannah, good morning to you. >> i hope you are not afraid of heights. sometimes you have to go to great lengths to witness history and you are going to see

something -- we are all going to see something really momentous in this hour. >> we are. we have been given unprecedented access by the port authority of new york and new jersey and in a couple of minutes i get to give a signal and history will take place. the workers here on the crane are going to lift the final two sections of the spire. sections 17 and 18. they will lift it to the top of what has already been constructed 1701 feet in the air and gently place the sections down, 75 feet of sections, and this building will soar to a height of 1776 feet. so symbolic. so significant and as i said it will become the tallest building in the western hemisphere. savannah, i don't know how you feel about heights, but i want to say, i want to give you a sense of where i'm standing. i'm on a platform right on the edge and take a look down. 105 stories down.

could get their hands on. there are reports she was pulled from the debris alive and rushed to the hospital. this would mean that someone has survived 17 days after the collapse and ten days since this rescue operation became a full-blown recovery operation. only today the death toll from this disaster soared past the 1,000 mark. there's still hundreds of bodies believed to be buried under that rubble from this form per garment factory. now we have a survivor and that will change the complexion of this ongoing operation. back to you. >> incredible news out of bangladesh this morning. jim maceda, thank you. new developments on the kidnapping case in cleveland and what the suspect is telling police about those abductions. jeff rosten is in cleveland again for us this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning to you,

savannah. ariel castro is waking up behind bars here at the cleveland county jail. he's in isolation. that means no contact with other inmates. he's also on suicide watch, but sources say he's talking to police. and overnight, we got the details of his chilling confession. >> ariel castro. >> reporter:. >> reporter: ariel castro. >> in his interrogation he talked about himself, three girls he's accused of kidnapping, raping and who he blames for it. law enforcement sources tell our affiliate wkyc castro describes himself as cold blooded and addicted to sex. that he couldn't control his impulses. the sources say that castro gave investigators exacting detail about the abductions down to what michelle, amanda and gina were wearing when he took them. castro appeared docky during

questioning the sources say, showing no remorse saying he expected to be caught because he had no commit plan. prosecutors now considering going for the death penalty. >> based on the facts, i totally intend to seek charges for each and every act of sexual violence, all of his attempted murders and each act of aggravated murder he committed by terminating pregnancies. >> reporter: police sources say that castro wrote a suicide note in 2004 saying he endured physical abuse as a child. in that same note, he blamed the girls for their own abductions. that they were the ones who got in his car in the first place. castro's mother speaking out on thursday. >> translator: i have a son who's sick, she said. i ask for forgiveness. relatives still can't believe it. neither can castro's friend ricky who even visited the house. you have been in the house several times. >> yep. >> reporter: have you ever heard

indication that girls were there? >> nothing. >> reporter: he said the front door was heavily secure canned with five to six locks. >> when you tried to leave the house? >> i couldn't get out. he had to do it himself. >> reporter: now ariel castro is locked up, held on $8 million bond. this morning, we are getting new information about the victims, all three girls keeping a low profile which is to be expected. they haven't come outside. michelle is still recovering in the hospital. amanda and gina back home with their families, sleeping in their own beds and in their own homes for the first time in a decade and we're told at gina's house all she wanted was pizza and who can blame her? >> thank you. let's turn to lisa bloom, the legal analyst. good morning to you. >> good morning. let's talk about this potential offing aing vated murder charges, presumably for the unborn fetus or fetuses of michelle knight. ohio is a state that does apply fetal homicide to the earliest

stages of pregnancy, is that correct? >> that's right. so the prosecution would have to show this was an unwanted termination of the pregnancy against the mother's consent. that is aggravated murder and potentially stoubt the death penalty in ohio. >> does this complicate the prosecution of the case? we know there are rape and kidnapping charges, the evidence, the testimony of three surviving witnesses, these women. does a murder charge make it more challenging for the prosecutor? >> it does because the kidnapping and rape charges are pretty clear. this is something that could be litigated. he could say he didn't do it. there may not be a lot of medical evidence to show the forced terminations because they could have happened years ago. >> there are reports that castro is talking to investigators or did and is perhaps worried about a suicide note that makes some admissions. are there any circumstances, in your mind, in which prosecutors

might offer or accept some kind of a plea deal? >> the only situation i can think of, is the three victims say we want to be done with him. give him life in prison without the possibility of parole. we want to restart our lives. i can see the prosecutor saying we will give you a plea deal to be done with this. >> thank you very much. we are following trouble on the international space station overnight. natalie is here and has details on. that. >> good morning. that's right. there's a leak on the international space station. some 200 miles above the earth. nasa says the radiator leak on the space station's power system is serious, but not life-threatening. engineers are working to reroute electronics to avoid the leak and officials say they will know more today. as of now, there are no emergency plans to evacuate the crew of six, which includes two american astronauts. a $45 million bank heist all perpetrated by hackers using

atms. seven people are in custody here in the u.s. this morning after an international bank robbery stealing some $45 million in just hours. federal prrs say it appears no individual card holders lost any money but the actual funds were taken from banks that back up pre-paid debit cards. new concerns this morning that warning signs went unheeded in the lead up to the boston marathon bombing. the nation's capitol, davis testified before congress that the fbi did not tell boston police they had received warnings about tamerlan in 2011. whole foods says that labels were reversed on chicken salad and a vegan version sold in the northeast. thin correctly marked salads were sold on tuesday and wednesday in 15 stores.

>> gadhafi was killed by his own people. the prime minister didn't reveal what kind of weapons they report finding but said his government is sharing the intelligence. the white house responded to his interview with us saying it does not yet have the evidence to say for certain whether the red line on chemical weapons has been crossed. now back to you, savannah. >> thank you. let us take a turn and go back to matt who's high atop one world trade center. the view is looking pretty good. >> it's not bad, savannah. you can see lady liberty in the harbor. to the right is ellis island on a spectacular friday morning here in the new york area. now back to tell you where i am. i am walking on what feels to me to be a precarious cat walk. i'm on one of the two cranes on top of one world trade center. to my right is the second crane. that one is a little taller. it has to be because just in a few minutes, as i give the signal, the crane will lift the

final two sections of the spire. those sections are just alongside me right now. they are 75 feet in length. the top is the beacon that will be able to be seen by about 50 miles in any direction on a clear day. what will happen is they will lift that section 0 up or those sections up and they will lower them down to those ironworkers on the top there. 1701 feet above sea level. how about those guys from local 40? they will guide it in to place and then bolt it together so it doesn't go anywhere. below me here, you can see some members of the trade, some union members here who have been so much a part, savannah, of this building process over the last six and a half years. there will be applause and tears shed when that moment is reached in a little while. meanwhile, it has been a very long journey since nooimpb 9/11, through a lot of the controversy over the project. to fill us in on that anne thompson is across the way and

she is over in new jersey. anne? >> reporter: good morning, matt. no matter where you stand, whether you are in the tower, as you are or you are beneath it or across the river like i am, this is a spectacular sight. it means something to every american from the daily commuter to the workers who built the buildings to the victims' families. from this tragedy and the rubble of that horrible september day has risen a new beginning. we got an up close and personal look at the tow area year and a half ago, when it was only 76 floors high, beams still being hoisted and the blow torches fuelled by the air of the open sky. >> wow. >> many workers have been here since the tower fell and for them this became a personal crusade. >> you have a little bit of your life and soul embedded in to that building up there. >> reporter: for the victims'

families whose hearts remain here, it is a mix of emotion. jim riches was a new york city fire chief on 9/11 and among his fellow firefighters lost that day was his own son jimmy. >> for us there will never be closure. my son will never walk in that door. this is the place where he died. >> reporter: her husband kevin was in the south tower when it collapsed. >> my husbands remains were never found. so this is where he's buried. this is his final resting place. the building is a symbol of a coming back. >> reporter: it's also a coming back for mcmillan the last survivor pulled from the rubble. >> maybe it is a little bittersweet but what they have done is rebuild the building. i think it is great. >> reporter: she told her kids about what happened to her and so many others that day and hopes to eventually take them to visit. >> they understand.

7:30 now on a friday morning, a picture perfect day in lower manhattan and we are just moments away from watching history live on our air, the one world trade center spire will be lowered into place, 1,776 feet in the air, a number loaded with symbolism and meaning for this country, and matt is 104 floors up or so and he will have the honor of kicking off what has to be an incredibly delicate operation, matt, and loaded with meaning for all americans. >> sarvannahsavannah, imagine t members of those who lost their lives on 9/11, not only the people who worked at the world trade center but the heroic

first responders who rushed into danger and lost their lives because of what happened here and over the last oh 11 years or so or 12 years, they've watched what's happened at this site. sometimes it's been painfully slow but over the last six plus years it's moved at quite a pace and so many people have put their heart and their soul into this progress or this process, and they're going to get to see the crowning achievement in a couple of minutes. by the way the guy who gets to have the honor of lowering the final two sections of the spire into place he's up in the crane just above me here, he's with the operating engineers local 14, that's john schaffner in the cab, and it's a delicate process. he'll pick this 75-foot piece of spire up, lift it above what's already in place and gently, ever so gently lower it to those ironworkers from local 40 up on the crow's nest, and they will then bolt it into place. now, guys like that have a tough commute to work every morning.

they get up very early and boy, it is not easy to get here. i found that out firsthand just a couple of hours ago, savannah. got it, thank you. there was no napping on my way to work this morning. i caught an express elevator to the roof and i was lucky. usually the tower crew has to take three elevators to the top, a 30 to 45-minute commute just inside the building. needless to say, these days, they brown bag lunch. at the top, my workout begins, i have to climb nine ladders, about 20 stories, to reach my post on the crane platform. if you don't like ladders, you can't come here. over 1,500 feet off the ground. i can't imagine doing this every day, though for the crane operators, the view from their corner office is priceless. okay, we've made it to the top,

just in time for sunrise. where is the starbucks? it really is an incredible journey, it's harrowing at times. i'm not afraid of heights but i found my knees knocking at times. this is scott reckler, chairman of the port authority. talk to me about the significance of today. >> this is a symbolic moment, the building represents the resiliency of the country, the thousands of men and women who worked here tirelessly have done it a passionate tribute for the terrorists on 9/11 led on this site. >> folks had the 9/11 stickers on their helmet and waiting for this moment for 12 years but certainly the last six and a half they've been building this building. scott, can we do this? >> let's do it. >> john schaffner, if he's ready and if these guys down below are ready, let's have the crowning achievement.

[ horn ] now what will happen is john will start to lift this 75-foot-long section, two sections actually of the spire. these two sections combined, savannah, weigh about 40 tons. you can see, i think, as this section starts to lift you can see the beacon, which is right here in the center. [ cheers and applause ] that's a very technically advanced beacon that, when it's in place and operating can be seen for 50 miles in any direction, savannah, on a clear day. >> i think i heard applause from some of the workers, people who have poured their hearts into this project and as we watch this moment unfold, matt, i have to tell you it is impossible not to have a lump in your throat right now. >> a lot of the folks on the platform below us, again we are above the roof on a platform part of the crane above the roof of one world trade center. these people just wanted to be

here this morning and i would imagine down on the ground there are a lot of other trade members, union members who have had some role in the construction of this building, they are probably gathered down there and there will be a huge piece of applause when this thing is finally lowered into place. they tell me because it is such a delicate operation -- i have to tell you weather was important. if you get a 40 on it section of spire swinging because of the wind, that is a very bad situation. they're going to lift it straight up. then they do they'll get it above the 1,701 foot section in place, lower it down to the ironworkers and they'll bolt it into place and that's when you'll hear the applause, savannah and natalie, when these people will let some of their emotions go. >> it is a moment loaded with emotion and matt, forgive me if you mentioned this already but how long do we think this

process will take? >> it's about a 10 to 15-minute process. they have to do this carefully. they'll take about six or seven, eight minutes to get this above what's there are there, then they have to make sure it's lined up exactly right. by the way as the bottom of these sections pass us right now, i can tell you what they did initially is they lifted it up off the platform here and they checked it very carefully to make sure there was no debris, nothing extra stuck to that mounting bracket area so there would be anything less than a perfect fit and they put those 60 bolts in and tightened them. they're heavy. i actually held one of them in my hands a short time ago and they'll make sure that thing is absolutely secure, savannah. >> we will wait and watch. you stay right there, i know you're not going anywhere, matt, we'll check in with you in a moment. for now we check in with al in maryland with another check of the weather. >> that is a stunning sight so

center site witnessing history. what do you see, matt? >> it's going great here, savannah. these two sections of the spire are now probably a couple hundred feet above us, going straight up. there was a moment, i will tell you, about five seconds ago where it looked like it was starting to swing a little bit. talk about the skill and precision a guy like john schaffner in that cab has to employ at this time. it has to be so steady. you can't get that moving in any bad direction. you don't want it to knick slightly the existing structure. it's probably getting 20, 30 feet from where the ironworkers are from local 40, it will be raised above them, the crane will swing a little bit, check it one last time and john schaffner will slowly begin to lower it. it has a square mounting bracket at the bottom with lots of holes for the bolts. they'll slide that perfectly into place and quickly begin to

bolt it into place and it will be the crowning achievement of this project, savannah, that's taken so long, the planning and there were so many disagreements here after 9/11 what should be done with this site, should it remain a memorial, should there be any buildings here, who would finance it? what was the design? should there be two towers or one? all that was put aside. the rebuilding began and everybody came together especially these people here who have made this possible, savannah. >> it's going to mean so much to so many people, not least of whom those who are a part of this process of placing that spire there, this delicate work as you've described it. this is a job that is not for the feint of heart, matt. how is it they're the ones chosen to do this task? >> john schaffner luck of the draw, he's the operator of this crane. the crane i think i'm on is the one that actually lifted these two sections from the ground. imagine that trip, bringing it

up 105 stories, and then setting it here on the roof, but john schaffner is the guy who operates that crane so he gets the honor. by the way, i was told something i thought was really poignant, earlier, a lot of the guys are the trades men and women who built this building, their fathers built the original trade center and some of their grandfathers had been in this business for a long time, they may have actually built the empire state building, you know, blocks to our north here. this is in their dna. it runs in their families. >> and this is hallowed ground for this country, of course, needless to say. matt, as you're watching -- >> look at what's happening, savannah, yes. they've got that thing, they have swung it directly over the existing structure so again 75 feet, two sections of the spire about to be lowered down directly. it will attach to the 1,701 feet already in place and that's when this building becomes 1,776 feet

tall, so symbolic, the year the 13 colonies declared their independence but so significant because so many people said you could never build a building like this in lower manhattan again, and you know what? these folks have proved everybody wrong. >> no question about it. >> i think we'll get some of a signal from those ironworkers when they feel they've got this in place, and then you'll hear some clapping from my level and the level below us, and as i said, if we had a camera down there, we've only got our camera here, but if you could be down there i imagine you see a lot of tears in the eyes of those brave men and women. >> i think we'll hear some applause again as this moment in history unfolds right here live, and matt, if people are just tuning in, take us through it one more time, this is a spire, you mentioned the symbolic 1,7 6

freedom tower and changed it to one world trade center but it's all part of the complex that was the world trade center, a museum is being constructed, that should open in the near future and as i said, this will be -- i read somewhere this could end up being the tallest only office structure in the world, again, the third tallest building in the western hemisphere, second will be the willis tower in chicago, third will be the trump international hotel also in chicago. but new york gets to brag again, the tallest building in the western hemisphere, it's located right here in lower manhattan. >> and matt, this is natalie here, a lot of people here in studio just riveted watching this and we all have goosebumps, i have to tell you, seeing this as it is happening, a very emotional experience for a lot of people who of course remember so clearly what happened on that day on september 11th, 2001. you remember covering it.

and you know, the ups and the downs, the goods and the bads, and it gave me a chance to go back. i almost had amnesia for everything that happened in my past. i was so busy living in today and looking towards the future that i had to go back and really resurrect a lot of things. >> the book covers a lot of ground and one thing's gotten headlines, you of course had a very well-known relationship, you were engaged to another tennis star, chris evert. you write in the book, basically suggest that during your relationship she terminated a pregnancy. "an issue had arisen as a result of youthful fashion and a decision had to be made as a couple. i was perfectly happy to let nature to take its course and accept responsibility for what was to come. chrissie, however, had already made up her mind that the timing was bad and too much was riding on her future." she wrote "in his book he has

written about a time in our relationship that was very personal and emotionally painful. i am extremely disappointed." >> we were young and it was emotional and painful time for both of us and we had to deal with the effects. >> should you have asked her, hey, is it okay if i write about this? >> i didn't ask anybody at any time about what i was going to put in my book and it was my time. i looked back and reflected on it and you know, what we went through and the decisions that we had to make were very important and it affected my life. >> you write about one of your struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder although nobody called it back then. i remember the shots of you bouncing that ball which you say was part of it. how did it manifest itself? >> when you're young you just think it's something else, twitches or superstitions or something, and i remember playing my first wimbledon and bouncing the ball and i couldn't get off of it, i kept doing it

until it felt right and i didn't understand it until i went home that night and i actually practiced bouncing the ball and trying not to bounce it so many times. later on, i saw a program on it, and the effects and what it was and almost what caused it and i just realized that i got that. that's what i've had, and it was tough at >> you've had an interesting life, a long marriage, 33 years but you also talk in the book about how you kind of put your wife through it. i mean you had infidelities and you're very open about them. >> well, tried to write the book like i played tennis. i was always very honest the way i played tennis, and then the people knew that, and i think that's what they had come to expect from me. and so i tried to write the book the same way. it's very easy to put only the good things in your book and you know, my life was filled with some not so good things and the way i approached those and the way i tried to be honest with myself and the way i put it in

of games that kept us together as a family, and she was the main architect of that. >> when i was a little girl she used to pack my lunch for school and write a little note on a napkin and i treasured that. it would be like this little private moment i would have in the middle of the school day, but it meant so much to me to open it up and for her to say i'm so proud of you. >> she taught me algebra even though she's no mathematician, she taught me how to drive stick even though she's probably not the best driving instructor. but she was always there and willing to do the difficult things with me. >> i think the greatest lesson my mom ever taught me really is you know, being able to pick yourself up when things don't always go as planned. you know, you're going to make mistakes in life but it's how you get right back up and get back out there and show the world that you can do better. that's i think the greatest lesson there is. >> family is everything to her.

thursday to begin the penalty phase of her trial in which a jury will decide whether or not she deserves to be executed. instead that part of her trial has been postponed until next wednesday. court officials have not given a reason as to why. investigators are trying to determine how a boat capsized in san francisco bay thursday, killing olympic sailing champion andrew simpson. the british simpson was part of a crew training for this summer's america's cup races. he was trapped underwater for ten minutes. one other crew member was injured. a salad bar mix-up at whole foods. the market says labels were reversed on chicken salad and a investigationan version of the salad at some of its bars in the northeast. the incorrectly marked salads were sold on tuesday and wednesday in 15 stores. the fda said the vegan salad contained eggs.
