meteorologist rob mayeda who is going to tell us whether mother's day is going to be affected by that fog. >> for the morning. for brunches before, say, 9:00. >> sleep in. >> absolutely. whatever you want. it's your weekend. we do have the low clouds inland. you can see that towards sunol. right now 50 in san francisco, 53 livermore. fog across the golden gate bridge. 55 in san jose. the sea breeze will be about a third as strong as yesterday. cooling around the bay and a few passing high clouds moving into the afternoon. no impact other than maybe breaking up the low clouds. as we head towards lunch time, around san francisco, the coast, low cloud, partly cloudy toward the afternoon. but notice our temperatures. by lunch time and 1:00 today warmer than yesterday. mid-80s by 1:00 inland. eventually you see the areas of red toward the trivalley, fairfield, upper 80s to 90 in the warmest places today and also perhaps into tomorrow. we'll have a full look at your complete mother's day weekend forecast coming up in just a few

minutes. >> no pressure, right, rob? >> sure. >> we'll see you in a little bit. we begin with disturbing revelations about that multimillion dollar catamaran that capsized in the san francisco bay near treasure island. this morning an australian newspaper is reporting that the boat's new design could be the problem. one of the sailors said the boat cracked and crumbled like a taco shell, eventually trap can and killing 36-year-old olympic medalist andrew simpson. it was redesigned for the america's cup competition in the san francisco bay. now those redesigns could be the entire event's undoing. organizers of the event say the crash was just a horrible accident, but many people in the sailing world believe the 72-foot catamaran named big red broke before it capsized. kimball livingston is an editor at "sail" magazine. he said the cutting edge catamarans are delicate by design and that team artemis was

having structural problems with that yacht from the very beginning. >> in terms of the integrity of the structure is you have a lot of pressure being put on two large hulls separated by 46 feet. and they're joined by the minimum of structure because you want to keep it light. the boats are built entirely of carbon fiber, and the less you put there, the faster the boat potentially can be, but obviously if you don't put enough, it breaks. >> investigators will now look at the wreckage in attempts to pinpoint the cause of that deadly crash. event organizers say they've not ruled out canceling the entire america's cup event pending the outcome of the investigation. three america's cup boats have now capsized in the bay in the last two years. race teerms well aware of the danger and they don't go out alone. each team sails with four supporting high speed motor boats. they carry doctors, medical equipment, diver, designers and

electronic analysis teams. in addition to that, the sailorses on each yacht carry mall oxygen tanks in case they're trapped under water. too early to tell why andrew simpson did not use his tank while he was trapped under the debris. on one of simpson's closest friends also works for team artemis. ian percy sailed with simpson at the beijing and london olympics winning the gold in 2008 and the silver this past summer. percy released this statement saying, quote, i lost my closest friend of over 25 years, the friendliest, kindest man i've ever met. i cannot believe he is no longer with us. all our thoughts should be with his wife and two amazing boys who meant the world to him. at nbcbayarea.com, you can find much more on the crash including raw video of the crash site and the latest statements from investigators. just search america's cup. this morning two brothers who drowned when their canoe

capsized at lexington reservoir will be honored. services held for nicholas and raymond nell. the men were in a canoe with their brother and their sister on sunday when it flipped spilling all four into the water. only the brother and the sister managed to swim to shore safely. police say there were no life jackets on the can pop -- canoe. antioch police are investigating an officer-involved shooting. this morning police are not releasing many details about the shooting, but here's what we know so far. it happened near the corner of bureaucraten buchanan road and barcelona circle. police are now confirming that the suspect was killed. both concore and antioch police were on the scene. but antioch leading the investigation because the shooting happened in their jurisdiction. also this morning, one man is fighting for his life after he was shot several times in oakland. police say the man was standing at a bus stop at 61st and

adeline streets when the gunshots rang out. that man is in the hospital in grave condition this morning. police say there were more than 12 shell casings near the scene and a liquor store, a couple of cars and a house were also hit by bullets. no one else was injured, though. right now there's no motive and there are no suspects in custody. a shooting coming as the dust is still settling after a shake-up among the top brass at the oakland police department. this past wednesday chief howard jordan resigned citing an undisclosed medical condition leaving his top deputy anthony toribio in charge. but 48 hours later toribio stepped down, then yet sean whent was sworn in as acting chief. whent says that toribio simply did not want the job. this comes after the mayor and the city administrators say they had a series of meetings with the compliance officer thomas frazier, who has been critical

of the department's top leadership. >> it's still a shock. if you asked me monday, i would not have thought this was coming. but law enforcement, unexpected things happen. >> a national search for a new police chief is still in the plans. now n the meantime, whent says his first priority will to be to start implementing that crime fighting plan of former police chief turned consultant bill bratton, part of which was issued this week. very special guests will be on hand this week as part of the city's first ever pet week celebration. the group of bomb sniffing dogs will show off their unique skills to the public today. in the wake of the boston marathon bombings and with the popular bay to breakers race coming up next weekend, police say it's important for the community to understand the crucial role these canines play in keeping the community safe. organizers say that will give people a chance to learn about the animals.

that's near the st. francis yacht club. better late than never. police hope they'll be using a brand new substation that was supposed to open three years ago but instead has been sitting empty. george kit ta yam ma has the story. >> reporter: it's surrounded by a temporary fence and weeds. a building that has sat here for the last three years. welcome to the substation or at least what was supposed to be a substation. >> we're paying $200,000 a year to maintain this beautifully closed building. >> it opened the building to much fanfare in 2010. after the celebration, they all went home and never came back. you can blame budget shortfalls for the doors remaining closed. >> there's a lot of money going into the building just having it closed. it's a shame. it's a gorgeous building. >> reporter: this may change soon. the substation is on a priority list in the next city budget. if approved that means 270 police officers could be

reporting here instead of downtown. and that's good news for those officers who drive up from morgan hill and gilroy. >> it can help us save money on commute times, gas, wear and tear on the police officers' characte cars, commute times. >> reporter: it's actually in councilman's ashcaro's district. he wants to make sure there are enough officers on the force first. >> what we don't want to do is take away from our capacity to keep our neighborhoods safe because you want this building open. we need to take a balanced approach and open it in phases to make sure that we're both giving the officers the assistance and the tools that the substation will help them with. >> neighbors like david gas par ra says it is a long time coming. he's seen a rise in crime in the area and he thinks having officers close by will help. >> i feel safer knowing that there's more and they are closer. >> that was george kit ta yam ma

102-92 and may have lost their best player in the process. steph curry re-injured that left ankle during the fourth quarter last night. he was in a lot of pain but still stayed in the game. as of this morning the severity of the injury is not known. curry did not talk with reporters after the loss. instead he spent about 20 minutes with a trainer working on that ankle. when he walked out of the locker room, curry was reportedly limplimp ing and had his ankle wrapped. the coach is hoping this team can bounce back. >> they outplayed us, they outworked us. they were the aggressor. that being said, we're still a confident basketball team. we talked about it. that team is very capable of coming into our building and beating us. they did that. we have proven that we're capable of going into their building and beating them.

good morning once again. we love our photographers because they have good eyes. how about this eye this morning. finding a little rabbit at the heritage rose garden in san jose. must be very quiet, too. today people in silicon valley will take steps to raise awareness for crohn's disease and colitis. it's a chronic inflammatory kochb the gastrointestinal tract that may affect as many as 700,000 americans. why it strikes is not very well understood. a walk in san jose tonight is hoping to change all that. this morning i'm joined by jody ford, the walk coordinator for the krone's and colitis foundation of america. thank you very much for joining us this morning. i did a story once about crohn's disease and colitis with a young

woman. she said part of the problem is it's a difficult disease to talk about, not like you want to talk about your tummy trouble, right? >> yeah. >> so you're being honored tonight. what has that been like for you to deal with, this disease? >> it's really hard. you skip a lot of school. and you have to make all that work up. but i've done it. it's really good to find like something that like helps you cope with it. like i picked volleyball. that helped me get my anger out, hitting the ball. >> i guess we can all use a little volleyball then. you never know when you're going to have a flare-up, right? >> yeah. it can just oops one day and then it's there. >> you try to manage it and deal with it, but there's only so much that you can do because we don't understand why it happen, right? >> yeah. >> so jody, tonight's event is really meant to raise awareness, right? >> yes. >> to help people feel more comfortable. we've seen in san francisco folks try to deal with it with some humor.

we see them walking around with it on their neck. how hard to get people talking about something that usually stays in the bathroom? >> by nature of the disease, they're pretty private. part of the walk is just trying to raise awareness and build a community where people affected by the disease feel comfortable and have a sense of community and real life. they're not the only one. especially for people of sammy's age, nice for them to come together and see that other kids are going through the same thing. look at my friends that are here to support me. that's what the walk is all about. >> it's a fund-raiser as well. >> yes, our goal is to raise $110,000. we're almost there. so again -- >> go over that, that's not a bad thing. >> not at all. >> let's get you over that. >> all that money goes towards research and support services. so a great thing. >> as many as 700,000 people. there are probably many more than that, that they're diagnosed but maybe not talking about it. >> absolutely. there's people who they're

story. it will allow temperatures to climb on up to the 80s and maybe close to 90 inland later on. 40s and 50s. weaker sea breeze, though, and that low cloud layer has actually been squished down closer to a thousand feet this morning. one of the things we're noticing, the change, is the low clouds. look at the humidity levels, fairfield, sign that we had rain there this morning. we do have problems with visibility. santa rosa down to a half mile, san jose not so bad. san francisco over towards livermore not too bad, but we do have low clouds and fog sticking around. this is a weather system that will bring rain to the pacific northwest. hopefully we'll break up some of those clouds. as it mixes in drier air from vertically down towards sea level during the day. so patches of low clouds in the afternoon. high clouds passing by tonight. then as we head towards mother's day morning, we'll see more of those low clouds to kick the day

off, then mostly sunny skies to wrap up the afternoon. high today in the 80s in san jose, not quite as chilly as last night. temperatures running a lot warmer especially over the trivalley. mid to upper 80s. would not rule out 90s from pleasanton down to sunol. 70s and 80s in the north bay. 70s back over towards oakland. across the inner bay and the coast, not a whole lot of change. but that marine layer now squished down to a thousand feet inland locations and valleys that see the temperatures jump up 5 to 10 degrees today. almost a repeat performance tomorrow. fine for your outdoor plans. then the sea breeze will pick up which will lead to a drop in temperatures. monday, tuesday, wednesday, more mild conditions and overall cooling as we head through the week. perhaps warmer again by next weekend. we've had some very gusty strong seabreezes. we'll see that back off here for mother's day weekend which is great for all thens aund

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. looking live at a very mild start to the day in san jose. and you can expect that it's just going to get better. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with rob mayeda. mostly clear in san jose but a lot of fog. >> we are seeing the fog around san francisco and even around sunol this morning patchy low clouds. 50 at livermore. 55 in san jose. the wind is still on shore but weaker than yesterday. now that the marine layer has been switched down to a thousand feet that's less air conditioning inland today. we'll see partly cloudy skies this afternoon. high clouds for the afternoon, then towards the evening a few more high clouds coming on by. by 1:00, mid to upper 80s inland

out towards concore and livermore and close to 90 briefly in the trivalley and san jose south. you can see 80s in the forecast today. so not as chilly this evening. we'll let you know if this warm-up's going to continue for mother's day in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, rob. just in to our news room, things back to normal at the white house after it was evacuated early this morning because of a fire scare. a transformer near the west wing reportedly malfunctioned setting off that smoke alarm. secret service says firefighters responded. the white house staffers were briefly evacuated. white house officials say the problem was fixed and now the west wing is back to normal. the president and first family were not affected. the site of one of the deadliest school shootings in u.s. history may soon be demolished. a group of elected officials in newtown, connecticut, voted unanimously to tear down sandy

hook elementary school and rebuild a new facility on the same site. the school is where a gunman, adam lanza, opened fire killing 20 first graders and 6 educators in december. the proposal now goes to the local board for final approval. happening now, britain's prince harry is in colorado this morning, part of his week-long trip to the united states. he is there to show his support for wounded warriors and will attend the fourth annual warrior games hosted by the u.s. olympic committee. lee ann gregg has a preview of that event. >> reporter: u.s. service members and veterans during one of their final practices before the warrior games where 260 milliontary athletes who have suffered injuries or illness will compete in seven sports. >> disable washes away as sport takes over. >> reporter: the competition and rivalry are fierce, but winning son-in-law pa is only part of why they're

colorado. prince harry is charming dignitaries and a high profile soon to be freshman at uc berkeley. the prince provided a special sweet for swimmer missy franklin last night. he joined in as a crowd in colorado sang happy birthday to franklin who turned 18. she will join the uc berkeley swim team in the fall. she's too cute. happening now, crew members on board the international space station are conducting a space walk right now to fix an ammonia leak. these are pictures of the mission control, and they are helping on that space walk. crew members chris cassidy and tom mashburn are trying to find the source of a leak that happened yesterday. the crew reported seeing white flakes outside one of the solar arrays. it is leaking ammonia coolant. that cooling system has a long history of small leaks but that the station is capable of

last night. police aren't confirming whether that suspect was killed. both concord and antioch police were on scene but antioch police are leading the investigation because the shooting happened in that city. a new film based on the lives of oscar grant hits select theaters this summer. this morning we're getting a sneak peek. >> the movie titled "fruitvale station" focuses on the 24 hours leading up to grant's death on a b.a.r.t. platform. he was shot and killed by a police officer in materially morning hours of new year's day in 2009. the film has already received critical acclaim including top honor hs at sundance. it was directedly 26-year-old ryan coogler of richmond. it's his first feature-length film. still ahead, using their personal tragedy to help others

you're watching "today in the bay." >> good morning, free mont, here is your look at the sky this morning. those clouds should burn off. we're going to feel some warmer temperatures today, even warmer tomorrow. let me take a little longer to get those garlic fries at the giants game. concession workers will vote on whether to authorize a strike. the atv 800 workers at at&t park say they're upset over a three-year wage freeze despite the team's success. they want a guarantee that if the giants replace the concession company they work for their contract will be honored by the new company. the workers say if there is a strike, managers and employees will step in to keep food service going. this starts in about an hour next to the ballpark.

one of america's most recognized multi-city cycling events this hitting the pavement this weekend. the always lovely amgen tour of california kicks off tomorrow. for the first time since the race debuted back in 2006, cyclists will cross the finish line in the bay area. the race this time starts in escondido near san diego. a thousand cyclists will make their way north over the next couple of dmas the bay area. the race will pass through san jose, livermore and san francisco before finishing up in santa rosa next sunday. >> here's a look outside this morning. the sea of stratus below the san bruno mountain camera. mount diablo off in the distance. that's a sign of warm-up. we'll talk about your forecast coming up. there's lots to do today in the bay. a beautiful morning to step on out for a walk, so why not do it for a purpose? first up is silicon valley takes

good morning. here's the view of the heritage rose garden looking live in san jose. there's a pretty nice view of the morning. we've got sunshine in san jose. patchy low clouds above and a warmer day in store. outside right now, temperatures still in the 40s and low 50s. we still have low clouds especially over towards san francisco and across the inner bay. 55 in san jose. notice the winds, not quite as strong as those very gusty sea breezes we've been seeing for the last few afternoons. today we'll see less of that

onshore push of cooler air. even though the low clouds this morning and humidity levels, this will change this afternoon. we'll get more warming inland and still a patchy fog out towards santa rosa. one of the changes we'll also see this afternoon in addition to the clearing skies will be some high clouds coming in later on in the day. this is part of a weather system that won't bring us rain but will help to mix the at more fear a little bit more and give us some drier air down towards sea level, that should break up clouds and give us a little more sunshine even towards san francisco. patch ps of clouds toward the coast. heading into tomorrow morning and as we get towards the start of mother's day sunday you'll see a few high clouds and just patchy low clouds out there on the coast. looks pretty good today. warmer. the marine heyer has been squished down from 2,000 feet to just under a thousand feet. for our inland locations today, this means 80s and maybe close to 90.

you're watching "today in the bay." >> a live look outside this morning at oracle arena. calm now, but certainly was not the case about 12 hours ago. oracle was electric for the biggest warriors game in more than 20 year, but the game, well, it didn't go as planned. to the action, first quarter, clay thompson to andrew bogut for the dunk and put the warriors up 6 early in the game, but the spurs proved to be too much. tony parker had a big night with 32 points, tim duncan had 23. the warriors lose 102-92 now trail the spurs two games to one in the seven-game series. this team, however, says they're not hanging their heads. >> you know, it hurts but we can't dwell on it. we've got to know that they're going to get, you know, some buckets and they're going to make some plays. that's what they do. you can't stop them every night.

you can't hang our head. that's the worst thing we can do. >> steph curry re-injured his left ankle during the fourth quarter last night. he was in a lot of pain but did not leave the game. as of this morning the severity of that injury is not known. but he did not talk with reporter last night. instead spent 20 minutes with a trainer working on that ankle. when he walked out he was reportedly limping, had his left ankle and foot wrapped. we should learn more about that injury later today. from the court to the diamond, the giants taking on the braves at at&t park. this one was all giants, a big offensive night from buster posey and angel pagan. this afternoon the game is at 1:05. still ahead, we have a sweet little puppy looking for her forever home. she looks like a little cartoon dog. we'll get her story coming up next.

our friends from pets in need are joining us this morning. penelope, if you ever wanted a monkey and your mom said no because that's what moms do. penelope is the solution. take a look at that little face. >> she's as clever as a monkey, too. she's about 4 months old, so she's still a baby. has a lot of learning and growing to do, but she picks up so quickly. we think she's probably definitely has some chihuahua in her but probably some kind of little terrier. she's one of our pdcps, pretty darn cute puppy. >> a very specific breed that happens only at pets in need. seems like we're boring her to tears. >> she's ready to go. >> she is. >> she's current on her vaccines
