hello and welcome to "comunidad del valle." we hope your enjoying your mother's day weekend. a run to save our high school sports on your "comunidad del valle." we begin today with the former president of mexico. we sat down with him to talk about his book, president bush and iraq and iran. >> let's talk about your book and everybody's talking about the way you described president

bush. is he the cockiest guy you've met? >> it's a compliment in spanish. very candid zlimpression. i just think you don't write a book to please anybody to say how you feel. your sentiments, your emotions and experiences. that's the book. the book is very candid and very explicit. it's very important to listen. i think it's very important for

people to see that politicians, presidents and prime ministers are also human beingings. i try to reflect that. it's very interesting for the reader. i would advice to read the book. then you get the full picture of what my relationship with president bush, i think it's friendly. i think that we both work very, very hard to service our people and promote our missions. >> can that also be arrogant? that's what some get here. i don't use that word. it was not my impression that he's arrogant. my impression is he seems to work toward his arms like that. >> is that confidence or arrogance?

>> that's how you're being. that's what you find in texas. >> you say that he's not a very astute horse rider. >> he's not. he's not. many people don't ride horses. i notice when invited him with the horse that i ride. i'vehe been riding since i was o years old. i noticed when he tried to touch the horse a little tremble in his hand. i come back to texas to his farm that very modest. he didn't see the horses there or he did not invite me to ride the horse.

i think it's important to be -- to speak with heart. speak what you feel and what you see and haveb experienced. that's why the book is interesting. >> your impression of president bush. >> i'm not here to say what his weakness are. one big difference which was the united states gets respect from

many countries in the world and the united states cannot be the police of every country in the world. i think that's the mission of the united nations. >> you told the president that when he called you on the phone, you said you need to do this unilaterally and he hung up the phone. >> we've had many, many conversations not only with him but with most world leaders, the relevant world leaders like president putin, prime minister blair. i've had many, many conversations. once we determined there was never any arms of mass destruction and it was proven and trying to respect the united

un nations responsible for carrying on with iraq we ha many, many constructive negotiations, discussions debate among all leaders and try to come up with a sound solution. it was not reached. >> we're talking about iran. should we stay out in your opinion? >> i think so. the united nations should be involved in there. we should make sure thata5 uni nation is responsible for problems that might exist between nations or within a nation. >> what are people outside this country saying when they hear that iran might be next on the list? here they go again. >> not yet because it's not developed up to that point but latin america you'll find many

people that will remember history and learn the many interventions that united states have in latin america and that's why this is. i think we can build up a much better world through other means and ways. built up regions of the world like united nations of europe and european union. it's an example of how 26 or 28 nations work together. >> up next on our show a run to save our schools on the east side. stay with us.

with money in our local schools running thin there's a problem with some schools keeping their school sports. that's why there's a run here in east side of san jose to help us save our schools sports. with me is eddie garcia. tell us about your foundation and its standing now. >> it was started probably about five years ago to raise additional dollars to supplement programs that are being affected by budget cuts like sports programs. another big fund raising event that the foundation has is the hall of fame dinner which has raised significant dollars and a lot of that money goes to the stem programs to math teachers. grants to help their students.

>> it's still running and working? >> absolutely. it's getting stronger and h"ó stronger. the board is getting bigger. it's a good mix of former administrators, parents. people who are really involved and care about the school district. >> you started this walk/run a few years ago when you saw sports was on the verge of being eliminated and you said let's help raise money.dn >> it was a group of parents and students who saw that potentially sports could be eliminated. there was an effort to eliminate sports back in 2009. i had the privilege and honor of sitting on the school board at the time. we were able to save sports because of this huge organizing

effort that start ed arrange saving sports and evolved into the 5k run. >> tell us about this event coming up this year. >> this is the fourth event. it's raised between 50 and $100,000 every year to supplement sports programs. it's a great, great run/walk. i ran in the first two with my daughter. i had a little health crisis and didn't get a chance to run in the next one. i've rebounded and one of my commitments is i'm going to go back and walk with those kids again. it's a pretty easy walk.

i'll be getting a slurpee. go through the neighborhood. last year there were about 900 participants. we expect about 1,000 this year. i'd like to convince and inspire people to join me because if someone can have a heart attack and rehabilitate and still do the walk it's awesome. >> tell us what sports does for the development of our youth. >> east side sports is really important to me. that's why i'm so passionate about this. i played basketball and baseball on the east side. i went back and was the head basketball coach. sports is why we're into team work, leadership and really how

to mold together to get to a it's critical but we also need these other schools. for some kids it's sports. others it could be art or drama or dance. that's a stropg thing that we need to do and keep on doing. >> it's a walk/run. it's a good way to maybe supplement maybe buy uniforms for the kids. >> i'm not on school board anymore but i would do is make sure that we always have sports in good standing. it's critical. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. >> he had a heart attack a while back.

coordination. >> your kids are in it? >> yes. my wife, myself and my two kids. >> that's great. carmen, what are you getting out of it at this point? you look very colorful. tell us about the colorful aspect of the attire. >> what i got out of it, i've learned a lot. i'm able to speak out when i go on stage. i'm not so shy. i can speak to the crowd. when i was in school i was more of a leader than a follower. i was able to put out what i need to get done. dance does a lot. it's not just something pretty to look at. >> there's hip hop dancing and ballet dancing. why did you choose this genre? >> it was through my dad. by the age of four i was alongside the adults in the back

dancing trying to keep up with people. after that i just fell more into the culture. the dance just amazing more each time. more regions and different outfits. >> we're going to have a performance like this to end our show. this is probably about ten years ago. i think you can -- there you go. it was all planned. >> and tina, my wife. >> this is one region. there's several regions that they have to learn. i didn't realize every region in mexico has a different dance form. >> yes. what you're seeing on the video is a more popular region. we're fortunate for being together for 40 years that we have a wide variety of regions that we have learned from different instructors and

mexico, local instructors. >> does it help doing this on the side. you have to go home and do your homework. >> it was a little difficult. sometimes you get projects that are a little overwhelming. it really does help. you learn not just listening to music. if you're in band it's really helpful. it helped me a lot to listen to. it flows and it sure does. >> toe heel or toe heel. what's the step? >> yes. >> hector is teaching my two girls. i appreciate what you're doing with them. it was started by a special lady in this community. you said we have to keep it going. >> yes. every year we honor her. it was start by four families. terry rodriguez continued it.

she's no longer with us. any type of organization to be around that long is a long >> you're going to celebrate with style and have a gala coming up. >> we do. that's may 25th at evergreen college. we have two shows. one will be at 2:00 and the night show will be at 6:00. we have a special emceeh(o ther. >> i'll be there and it's my honor to be a part oflñ that. how do you prepare for something like that? there's going to be a will the of people watching. you're used to the stage already but a couple hundred people can get intimidating. >> it does. even though i've been doing it for quite a few years, it still brings butterflies to the stomach. just knowing my group is there we'll get it done. it's something more fun.

>> it's happening at the evergreen valerie college on may 25th. even final thoughts. >> we're more of a community based, family group. carmen is a dancer that started at the same age as your girls. she's been with us since four years old. she's been with us a long time. we range from four years old to -- >> my dad is now 66. >> we don't discriminate when it comes to age. her dad will say you're never too old to start. >> celebrating 40 years at evergreen valley college. see you 0lthere. thank you for what you're doing. >> thank you. >> up next, we'll watch a full length video of their dance. stay with us.
