live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a tuesday. i've savannah guthrie. >> i'm matt lauer. angelina jolie opens up about what she calls her medical choice in this morning's "new york times." she made the decision for a double mastectomy after genetic tests showed she had a high probability of developing breast cancer. >> she has kept this process private but is now sharing her story in the hopes of helping other women. let's get right to dr. nancy snyderman, nbc's chief medical editor. good morning to you. >> good morning. it's estimated 450,000 women around the world will die of breast cancer and 200,000 women in the united states will be diagnosed next year. it's obviously, when we talk about breast cancer, a disease a lot of us know about and talk about, affected our brothers and sisters. sometimes our brothers, our mothers.

in angelina jolie's case, she wants us to know it can also be a personal journey, a personal journey that weaves in her case, her family history and her genetics. she wants women to know about the options. in an op-ed in this morning's "new york times," actress angelina jolie writes she chose to have a double mastectomy to reduce her chance of getting breast cancer. the 37-year-old oscar winning actress made the decision after losing her own mother to ovarian cancer in 2007. shortly afterward, she talked to ann curry about the loss. >> it's a natural thing for a child to lose a parent. i lost my mom too young. it happened. i'm happy she's out of pain. >> reporter: jolie went genetic testing on the bcra1 gene which sharply increases her chances of developing cancer. doctors estimated she had an 87% risk of getting breast cancer

and a 50% risk of ovarian. in the article, jolie writes, once i knew this was my reality, i decided to be proactive and minimize the risk as much as i could. >> this is a very unique situation in that she tested positive for a specific gene mutation. in women who do test positive for these mutations we will more often recommend surgery. >> reporter: she writes she began with the procedures february 2nd to end the breast tissue ending with reconstruction of both breasts using implants. the entire process took about three months. jolie writes, i did not feel any less of a woman. i feel empowered i made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity. >> i can't imagine this would have any sort of negative impact on her image or ability to get work or do any of the roles she's done in the past. >> reporter: by her side her entire time was her partner and father of her six children, brad pitt.

about pitt's support, she writes, brad was at the pink lotus breast center for every minute of the surgeries. we managed to find moments to laugh together. we knew this was the right thing to do for our family and it would bring us closer and it has. >> most cases of breast cancer are random. genetic mutations only make up 5% to 8% of all cases of breast cancer. in this particular case the specific mutation of the gene, in this case, angelina jolie, combined with a very strong family history meant she had the time to sit down with genetic counselors and determine what was particular in her case and what was her best option. i think, savannah, in this case, it is the epitome of personalized medicine. >> let's put this in perspective, nancy. i think you said it's 5 to 8% of the population that may have this gene. a lot of people watching might think should i get this testing?

is it practical for them to do so, because as i understand it, it's quite expensive. >> it's exactly what i want women to hear, this is not a random test. because her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at a very young age and because she had the means to get this test, which can be $3,000 and then have the right doctors to sit down and counsel her, she could make an informed decision. ironically, i'm at a conference today on this particular thing, understanding your genome. while we start to understand more and more a3 c3 vamos a poder buscar er on family. sit down with your doctor and decide, is this for you. in some cases, insurance companies will pay for this.

lines of two dozen editors. the letter doesn't say why, but the timing suggests it was to find out who leaked details of a highly classified effort to foil a terror plot. >> officials tell us cia thwarted an al qaeda plot in yemen to detonate a bomb of a powerful explosive. >> reporter: at the time, fbi director robert mueller strongly condemned the leak. a leak like this is explosive. >> reporter: according to "a.p.," among the lines tracked were office and personal numbers of "a.p." reporters and editors, including their home and cell phone numbers. and main numbers used by the u.s. house of representatives. there was no actual listening in on calls, the ap says. ap gary pruitt says it's amounting to serious interference. advocates for journalistic freedom agree. >> the fact it was so broad, so many phone lines over a two

month period and they made no attempt to negotiate to get any kind of information beforehand is outrageous. >> reporter: a former cia spokesman said leak investigations are demanding but he's surprised by the scope of this one. >> it tells me this is a very significant case in the government's eyes and willing to take the heat they will take from the news media in order to track down the leakers. >> the obama administration has been more aggressive tracking down leaks than any previous one. a spokesman in washington doing the investigation said prosecutors considered alternatives before subpoenaing the records and believe its actions strike a balance between protecting press freedoms and administering the criminal laws. >> thank you so much. to two other controversies involving the white house including irs's targeting of special groups for special scrutiny. chuck todd has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. more conservative groups have come forward overnight saying it

wasn't just irs agents in a rogue cincinnati office doing the targeting but this was also taking place in the irs here in washington. meanwhile, democrats made the outrage bipartisan by president obama. president obama spending monday night with supporters in new york city after a rough 72 hours for his white house. at a news conference monday, mr. obama said he's outraged with the irs. >> i've got no patience with it. i will not tolerate it and we will make sure we find out exactly what happened on this. . . . . . . . . . allegations of irs misconduct until last friday. now, a timeline and a draft report by an inspector general reveals irs employees in cincinnati began scrutinizing conservative groups that included the words tea party and patriots in march of 2010, one year earlier than the irs had admitted. the timeline shows the irs's chief counsel was briefed on the matter in august of 2011.

despite testimony from march 2012 from then irs commissioner douglas schulman telling congress they were not being targeted, he was informed two months later. turning to benghazi, mr. obama defiantly rebutted charges that his administration initially down played the attack had ties to terrorism. calling it a circus. >> the whole issue of talking points frankly throughout this process has been a sideshow. >> now, hearings on benghazi and that investigation will continue later this week. it may not be public, as the committee that's been investigating this, matt, wants to interview the two investigators. the state department, mike mullen and tom victory, who did the state department review because most importantly they want to find out why was hillary clinton, then secretary of state, never interviewed during that investigation. >> chuck todd at the white house this morning. thank you very much. there are new clues in the cleveland kidnapping case this

morning regarding how the suspect may have hidden three young ladies so long. as new video emerges of ariel castro inside that home. today, national correspondent, jeff rossen is in cleveland once again. good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. ariel castro waking up once again this morning in the county jail. he is on suicide watch which means guards are literally checking on him every 10 minutes and keeping logs of his every move. we have those logs and you may be surprised what he has been up to in his cell the past few days. the big news is how did he keep those girls hidden so long without any knowing. this morning, we're taking you inside that house for the first time. ariel castro as we've never seen him before playing base in his kitchen, care-free. this cell phone video obtained by nbc news was taken just a few months ago. the girls, police say, were held captive just steps away. we showed the video to castro's cousin, maria.

>> it breaks my heart to think he was acting like that while those girls were suffering the way they did. >> reporter: now, castro is behind bars and guards are tracking his every move. we obtained the official jailhouse logs. castro spends most of his time laying down and sleeping. on thursday, he was complaining of being cold. later, guards saw him walking around cell naked. on friday, castro was making kool-aid. on sunday, he was using two loose strings from the matt to floss his teeth. >> i want him to suffer in that jail. to the last extent. >> reporter: ariel's brothers talking to cnn with new information about castro's house, how he may have hidden amanda, gina and michelle for so long. not letting his brothers pass the kitchen and blocking doorways with curtains. >> the radio was playing all the time. if not the radio, the tv.

they committed to wars in afghanistan and iraq? >> the answer is yes. i actually wrote a memo, which is on my website, rumsfeld.com, that's been called the parade of horribles. i sat down and wrote all the things that could go wrong, that i could think of prior to the president's decision to go into iraq, one of which was there may not be stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. >> you write about your time as defense secretary quote your words here, there was no shortage of decisions i made that rattled a few cages and made some folks unhappy. might i have approached some decisions differently knowing what i know now, of course. you talk about wishing you hadn't misspoken in a couple situations and maybe more forceful with president bush at the time about accepting your resignation after abu ghraib. that's a little bit like falling on your sword. is there a specific military or policy decision you wish you could have changed?

>> sure. a personnel decision is really -- if it's a mistake, it's the mistake of the person doing the hiring, as opposed to the person coming aboard. i made a mistake by taking a former general and making him secretary of the army. if you know you need to change the culture, if you know you need to move that institution as the president said, from the end of the 21st century and into the information age, putting a person who came up through that system in charge as the civilian leadership was a mistake. i had to correct the mistake. >> some people say take the high road, it's less crowded. donald rumsfeld, good to see you, sir. >> thank you. >> thanks for coming back. the book again is called "rumsfeld's rules." o.j. simpson is back again requesting a new trial in the

in court. he's seeking a new trial in the armed robbery and kidnapping case that landed him behind bars. nbc miguel almaguer has the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in just a few hours, o.j. simpson will be back in court for day two of his hearing, out to prove his old lawyer botched his case when convicted of four felonies. heavy-set with graying hair, o.j. simpson has spent nearly five years in prison and the former football star could spend another 28 years behind bars. >> count 2, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, guilty. >> reporter: convicted of a gun point robbery of sports memorabilia dealers in 2008 he wants a new trial, claiming his former lawyer, yale galanter never disclosed that he knew of the plan in advance and gave simpson poor legal advice. >> it's hard to convince a judge that a defense lawyer was involved in a plea deal, he

could get a new trial. >> reporter: in what's expected to be a weeklong hearing, simpson could take the stand wednesday. something that he didn't do five years ago and he never did in this infamous 2005 trial -- >> if it doesn't fit you must acquit. >> reporter: he was acquitted of his ex-wife, nicole simpson and ron goldman. >> not guilty of murder. >> reporter: linda has covered all of simpson's case for the associated press. >> this is really o.j.'s last chance because if he loses this hearing, then he could go into the morass of the federal system, which would take years. >> reporter: o.j. simpson, back in court and still making headlines. the nevada supreme court has denied o.j. simpson's appeal in 2010. and while legal experts say it is a long shot he will get a new trial, there's certainly plenty of interest in seeing o.j. simpson testify.

we're back now. it's 7:40, with an nbc news a battle over america's wild horses. now, depending who you believe, they're either seriously threatened or they are a menace costing taxpayers millions of dollars. nbc senior investigative correspondent lisa myers has been looking into the crisis within the government's wild horse program. lisa, good morning to you. >> hey, matt. good morning. first, we should warn people that contains video of horses that's hard to watch. no matter where you stand on

this issue, you may find this fact alarming. there are more wild horses held in captivity than living in the wild. they are american icons, symbols of the boundless spirit of the wild west. treasured by many who live near them, including singer songwriter carole king. >> americans love freedom. these horses are the embodiment of freedom. >> reporter: these were the final moments of freedom recently for some wild horses in utah. helicopters drove 257 of them out of the swayze mountains, chased families for miles and finally captured them in a trap. >> i find the round-up so offensive because they're so inhumane, so unnecessary and so cruel. >> reporter: this scene of capture and panic witnessed many times by filmmaker ginger kathrens. >> i know how much they love their family and their freedom, and in an instant, they lose both. >> reporter: afterwards, they're

split up essentially sent to separate holding facilities. the bureau of land management, blm, reported no death or injuries at this round-up, although our cameras appear to show this foal trampled. still, at other round-ups in 10 western states, horse documents have documented brutality and death. a panicked stallion nearly rips off his leg. wild horses zapped with shocks. >> they are using cattle prods on america's wild horses. >> reporter: horses severely weakened after running for miles. wild burrows, too, chased and hit by a helicopter. we showed some of the activists footage to the head of the blm program. in your view, are those horses being treated humanely? >> there are some very heartbreaking pieces in there, absolutely. no. i would say the incidents we see there are not the way we want animals to be handled. >> reporter: guilfoyle says those incidents are isolated and less than 1% of the horses die

during round-ups. but critics complain many others die later of complications. what would happen if you stopped all the round-ups? >> the population would continue to grow and grow and the range lands would continue to be overgrazed. >> reporter: blm says there are too many wild horses and the land must be managed for multiple uses, including that pits them against livestock interests who want cheap grazing on federal land. the cattle industry urges more use of birth control for horses so there will be more land for ranchers like this. what would happen to your business if the round-up stopped? >> i'd go broke. >> wild horses are not receiving a fair shake. >> reporter: this man managed wild horses and natural resources, until he retired in 2005. blm says there's not enough food on the range to sustain the wild horses.

>> i don't agree with that. there is enough. what really needs to be done is to reduce the livestock numbers. >> reporter: blm acknowledges that in virtually every wild horse management area, livestock is allocated more forage than the horses. this is the blm holding facility in delta, utah. today, there are almost 50,000 wild horses in holding areas around the country, more than the roughly 2,000 left in the open range. keeping more horses in captivity than in the wild cost taxpayers $78 million a year. and the government faces a crisis, what to do with 50,000 horses when only a tiny fraction get adopted each year. >> let them go to slaughterhouse. what value are they now? >> reporter: inside blm, there have been discussions in the past about slaughtering wild horses. is blm considering allowing horses to be sold for slaughter? >> absolutely not.

we never have and we never will. >> reporter: a lot of folks have said that instead of protecting the wild horses, that blm is helping them disappear. >> that is absolutely not true. we care about them and we're going to do our best to have them out there forever. >> reporter: back in utah, blm says the round-ups actually keep horses from starving to death in harsh conditions. >> reporter: so you'd rather have a wild horse starve to death and be free than live in captivity and live longer? >> now, you tell me what's more humane or less humane, to let them die at an old age in their homes with their families or to terrorize them through these long drives with a helicopter, incarcerate them. if i were them, i'd vote to stay wild. >> now, blm recently established new expectations for its contractors to reduce abuses but activists say the rules are weak.

. . . san jose fire earlier this morning. the flames broke out of the building off of highway 85. that happened about 2:00 this morning. firefighters say the roof collapsed and that building is a total loss. so far, no reports of any injuries. that is good news. the cause of this fire remains under investigation. also, in san jose, four people suffering minor injuries in an accident involving a pick-up truck, a vta bus and a luna park home. this happened at the intersection of 11th and empire streets. it happened about 6:00 last night. a vta spokesperson says the pickup ran a red light and hit the bus, which then ran into the house. the house did take on some minor damage. right now, let's check out that weather outside and say good

ongoing leak investigation. in a letter of protest, the ap calls the investigation a massive an unprecedented intrusion in news gathering operations and demands return of the records and destruction of all copies. the head of the ap says he is very troubled by the investigations and wants to hear the government's explanation. for the first time, we are seeing inside the cleveland house where ariel castro held three women for a decade. this shows castro playing the base while police say the women were confined just steps away. meantime, police records show castro had been investigated for complaints of assault, domestic violence and menacing but was never charged. a long-time member of the "today" show family, psychologist, joyce brothers, credited with pioneering self-help and pop culture passed away monday at the age of 85. >> welcome to the program. my job is to help solve problems, not create them.

this gene? what would be your counsel? >> it's a great place to start. it is important to understand it is just a very small percentage of women who carry this mutation. even those who have a family history of breast cancer and mother or sister do not necessarily carry the gene. a very small percentage of people who would be in this position to make this kind of decision. >> and we were talking to dr. nancy snyderman, to be tested for this can be very expensive. how do you know if you're a candidate to have the test? >> i think the important thing is not just deciding on your own to get the test. speak to physicians and gather information. insurance companies do cover the testing if it's appropriate. there are genetic services that exist. you can learn more about it by speaking to someone. >> let's talk about the procedure. she was quite open in this piece and gave a lot of detail and said this was a three month process of surgeries for her. is that typical? >> that is typical. it's really important to

emphasize, this is not as easy as some of the cosmetic breast procedures done. this is truly a multi-step procedure and there are implications of that multi-step procedure. >> there have been great advances in terms of breast reconstruction. that's one of the brighter pieces of this. >> she makes a good point in talking about the fact in many instances we can even spare the nipple these days and newer implants available. the discussion has to center around not only what we can do but also some of the emotional effects of this as well she talks about. >> this is a separate issue but some what related. there has been some conflict in the medical community how often some women are choosing to get double mastectomy, and some have raised questions not in a case of angelina jolie's but other cases where women have been too quick to do so. i wonder your perspective on that? >> it comes down to a real discussion with the physician

who stunned the fashion world by giving up her career. we will talk to kiley bisutti in just a moment. first, her story. three years ago at the age of 19, kylie bisutti was one of the sexiest models around. out of 10,000 contestants, america voted her to be a victoria's secret runway angel. kylie had worked modeling jobs for years and dreamed of becoming a supermodel and this was her crowning achievement. ♪ >> but eventually kylie was ashamed. >> it definitely made me feel like i was being made to sell sex. >> as seen in this victoria's secret video. >> we're talking about outer thighs, making your butt rounder. >> kylie admits she was consumed by a pursuit of fame and physical perfection. >> i really started to feel exploited and sexualized. >> eventually, kylie followed her faith and took a bold step

and gave up a lucrative career and followed her husband to find a more centered life in the small town of big fork, montana. >> she came to her convictions going, i don't want to go down that road anymore. i don't feel comfortable dressing half naked to sell clothing. >> kylie now counsel's other young women about following christian values and tells her story in the new book, "i'm no angel." victoria's secret said miss bisutti has made numerous fabrications and misstatements of fact regarding her brief association with victoria's secret. her pastor says her story rings true. >> it's someone pursuing success and money and realizing along the way those things will not bring her the satisfaction she was looking for. >> and kylie is with us now, her book "i'm no angel," from

victoria's secret model to role model. you are from a little town in nevada called jackpot. you must have felt you won the jackpot when your modeling career took off. was that your life-long dream? >> it was my life-long dream. >> when did you start feeling like this was inconsistent with your values and your faith? >> well, you know, it was a slow gradual process over time. but it really revolved around modeling lingerie. that was the pinnacle of my decisi decision, you know, being seen by other men in lingerie, when i have a precious husband at home who should be the only one to see me that way. >> you say it dawned on you, essentially you weren't selling lingerie, you were selling sex. >> exactly. that's my perception of it. i believe that the modeling industry as a whole really exploits young girls. >> were you late to come to that realization. you look at you walking the

runway on the victoria's secret runway. it's pretty clear what modeling is about in some ways. >> yeah. it definitely is. i'm just thankful god changed my heart. you know, earlier on, rather than being five or 10 years down the road of runway modeling and lingerie modeling. >> i should say you won this victoria's secret contest in 2009. you walked the runway and participated in a swimsuit catalog shoot and beat out a lot of other young women for this. victor victoria's secret said, we read part of the statement, you didn't have a long relationship with the company. it goes on to say in 2009, miss bisutti won an online amateur modeling competition and hasn't worked for us and it was the opportunity for a one time walk in the victoria's secret fashion show. i guess the company is suggesting maybe you're ov overstating your relationship with them in order to sell books. what would be your response? >> my response is all the truth is in the book.

my book's really not about victoria's secret. it's about the modeling industry as a whole and about helping girls with self-body image issues, eating disorders and really exposing the entire industry for what it is. it's not targeting their brand. >> you talk a lot about some of the things you witnessed, pretty shocking, what other models were doing, the pressure you felt to be incredibly thin. can you tell us a little bit about that? >> yeah. there was intense pressure on me. i know on many models around me to be incredibly thin. i went as far as doing crazy crash diets to drop the weight after my agency had called me fat and told me that i needed to lose weight off my thighs and hips. i did very unhealthy things to lose the weight but i was told if i didn't do it, i wouldn't book jobs and become successful. >> do you think these experiences were unique to you or because you were just coming up and you hadn't been a huge

success yet and that it would get better once you were, i guess, a more successful model? is that what you were wondering? >> yeah. you know, the whole time through my career, i always thought, well, one day this is all going to pay off, one day it will change for me. but i realized it never really changed the way thought it would. as i saw more and more girls collapsing after runway shows, hospitalized because of eating disorders, i realized it wasn't just my experience, it was everyone in the entire industry. >> and to choose to live out your faith in this big bold way, was it hard to make that decision? but also to give up something, as you said was a life-long dream as well. >> you know, the amazing thing is i felt total peace about my decision. and now i'm the happiest i've ever been in my entire life. i don't regret any decisions, i'm just so happy now. >> i'm happy to hear that.

>> you ever heard the term called a little harsh on the contestants? >> entrepreneur design er andesa and pat on the show. you put these guys through the paces, don't you? >> there's advocates of the crowd of 100 that ultimately makes the decision. through that of crowdfunding we take them through the decisions? you have to give tough love and get down do the nitty-gritty. >> you know what it's like to run a business. if somebody doesn't ask these questions now before they try to get in business they could be in trouble later. >> absolutely. i understand what these business are going through. i started out of the spare bedroom of my home with $500 and grown a brand over the last 11 years. get what they're going through but we want to make sure they can use this $50,000 and use something that will make a difference for their business. >> it will make a difference. $50,000 is a lot of money when it comes to a small business.

>> right. it's not a loan asking to be paid back, not investment for the company, $50,000 they can use however they want. >> if someone said to me, here's $50,000 and no strings attached, it would have been a game changer. >> an expert takes us behind the scenes with each business. >> you don't want to take the companies at their word how great they are so we send somebody to the headquarters and check them out. >> your advocates for the studio audience they have the say. they get 97% of the vote. snow they often vote against us. >> we're only two votes out of 100. many times the way pat and i voted is not how the crowd voted. >> the guy said he had spicy condiments. what are some of the more unusual ideas. >> an ice cream truck with a stripper pole on the top. >> no. what are the more unusual ideas. >> one guy had a desk you hang on the back of your hotel room door. >> a stand-up desk. there is a great product that has kids' colored hair gel.

steak, medium rare, a hot fire four minutes total. >> you want the vegetables to get that grilled look. >> and the caramelization. easy to do and easy to eat, take them off. preserve some of the marinade before you marinate it, for the sauce. >> and before we do, we have the salmon on the cedar plank. >> get it at home depot, soak it for an hour, put the fish on top. cover it 20 minutes, fall apart sender delicious. >> salt. >> a beautiful thing. alan, thank you so much. all of its own. >> yes. just percuss siv dance we use to provoke emotion and get the crowd going. >> i understand it's popular on campus at princeton, right? >> yeah. we've gotten a lot of support from a lot of different groups on campus and a lot of academic groups as well. >> we were watching you rehearse as well. how often do you get together to rehearse? >> depends. we get together throughout the year for other performance groups and competitions. sometimes we rehearse and perform about seven times a week, sometimes just three times a week. it really depends what we're doing during the week. >> can we see it? the princeton high steppers. ♪ ♪ ♪

press" reporters as part of an ongoing leak investigation. in a letter of protest, the ap calls the investigation a massive intrusion into news gathering and demanded a return of the records and all copies. the head of the judiciary committee says he's very troubled by these allegations and wants to hear the government's explanation. acting irs steven miller is facing tough questions over his agency's targeting of tea party groups for extra scrutiny. at a news conference on monday, president obama said he was outraged by the allegations and will not tolerate targeting. however, he called claims of a cover-up of the benghazi attack a sideshow. and we are seeing video inside the cleveland house where ariel castro allegedly held three women captive for a decade. this video obtained by nbc news

near highway 85 about 2:00 a.m. firefighters say the roof collapsed and the building is a total loss. there are no reports of any injuries. the cause is still under investigation. also in san jose, four people are recovering with minor injuries after this accident involving a pickup truck, a vta bus in a luna park home. it happened at the intersection of 11th and empire street around 6:00 last night. the spokesman said the pickup ran a red light and hit the bus and the bus ran into the home. the house has minor damage. christina loren is standing by with a look at our nice forecast this tuesday. >> hi, marla. another warm day. very little cloud cover to cool us off. 85 in livermore, 84 for napa, 82 today in san rafael. basically a repeat performance from where we ended up yesterday. high pressure off to the east. an area of low pressure dives south. for us, we'll see a much cooler

they brought the kids out from different schools. >> was that from the concert they did before? or just last night? >> just last night, unbelievable. it was a great, great event. >> send out another god bless you to angelina jolie. who we're finding out this morning, she wrote an op-ed in the "new york times" telling the world and good for her. that she kept this quiet, while she was going through it. >> she underwent a preventible double mastectomy. she got tested for a gene and a lot of women wonder am i carrying the breast cancer gene. she was in fact carrying it. but her was unique, a mutation of it. and her doctors told her there's an 87% chance of you getting breast cancer. with those odds, she chose to undergo a mastectomy. >> also a 50% chance of her getting ovarian cancer which her mother died from recently. >> in the last few years. >> it's a weird thing, when i was diagnosed with cancer, i did

the test to see if i had the gene. i didn't have the gene, but so decisions were easy for me. now i think they say only 5% to 7% of people have that mutated gene, only a small percentage of women. but i guess you have to talk with your doctors. i think it's a little unsettling, because if you do get tested and you have the gene, but you don't have the specific kind that raises the odds, what do you do with that knowledge? >> don't they usually give you what your odds are if you don't do x, y, and z? there are certain drugs you could take, some people don't want to take them. but everybody's case is absolutely unique. so talk with your doctors. >> you know -- some people -- >> i'm glad she had brad next to her through the whole thing and i'm grateful that they could do that privately. it's tough enough to face these kinds of things, she's a human being. she's not a movie star, she's a human being, and those kinds of things usually remind you that

they are, we're all just flesh and blood. and i tell you, the two things you take totally for granted until you lose them. one is your privacy. once you lose that, it's just, so unsettling. and the other is your health. >> your health. >> at the end of the day, if you don't have your health, how can you appreciate any blessing you have, you know? >> they say 40,000 women in the united states lose their battle with breast cancer each year. that's 40,000 a year. it's funny. >> how many globalry? >> 450,000 around the world. >> but you know, it's interesting, because i remember when i was diagnosed with breast cancer. i went to tell my boss and i was so upset and i didn't know what to say. and he said, hoda, i know a lot of women with breast cancer and they all have one thing in common. and i said, what's that? and he said, they're still here. and it reminds you that the odds are high that you will still be here. it's funny, because my best friend's young daughter now knows a lot of people with cancer and she's not so afraid of it. because she knows that aunt hodie has it and i'm here.

and her other aunt had it and she's here. it's not the big scary c word for a lot of people that it used to be. >> hardly anybody survived when you got cancer. >> we are making strides, that's great. >> enough of that. >> this is so funny. there's this lady on the plane. >> you may have seen it we want to show you a little clip of it. she just started singing -- a whitney houston song. >> it was a long flight. >> l.a. to new york. >> she wouldn't stop singing. let's just take a listen. >> take a picture, take a picture. >> wait, wait. >> anyway -- >> this is the aftermath. ♪ i will always love you >> that was very hard song to sing. very hard. i used to do it in my nightclub
