"today in the bay." >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." 4:31 on the nose. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> a little cooler outside. >> good morning to you, laura and jon. good morning to you at home. you want to pull out that coat as we head throughout the day, temperatures are going to be noticeably cooler than the past couple of days where we have been nice and warm. look for temperatures in the 40s. and windchill factors, winds starting to gust. a storm system moving in that will bring us showers. we'll take you to that forecast coming up. first, i want to check your drive on a wednesday morning with mike. >> good morning. we're looking over towards palo alto. the peninsula and 101. nice and easy flow here. we will show you, however, the map and you have no problem coming over to the peninsula side. there's the south bay. no problems from the peninsula side. we'll check that out for highway

84. also debris reported. it sounds like it's just clearing, 280 at wester borough. no problems at the that, month major disturbances north of i-80 heading up through south san francisco. a san jose neighborhood is grieving the loss of a little girl hit and killed while crossing the street. it happened yesterday afternoon on bluefield drive in south san jose, not far from parkview elementary. the family of 6-year-old eileen kuros was hit by a silver suv. eileen died at the scene. her sister and aunt are recovering this morning. drive of the suv is said to be cooperating with police. investigators say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor. coming up at 5:00, we'll have a live report on what neighbors in the area say the girl's death never would have

happened if simple safety measures were taken. the death a 9-year-old girl search is expected to resume. hundreds have joined in that search for 200 personnel all over the bay area. mikaela lynch who has autism wandered away from the family's vacation home on mother's day. lynch does not speak and she has the mental capacity of a 1-year-old. if searchers are going to find her, they will likely do it without much help from lynch. >> we have somebody who will not respond to normal voice stimuli. she may not be able to even like walk across the street if she was in trouble and needed assistance and there was help across the street. >> the surveillance video shows the girl passing by a neighborhood home, traveling away from the nearby cash creek. investigators see that as good news. the national association for autism says children with autism are drawn to water. 90% of runaways under the age of 14 become drowning victims.

let's hope she's okay. more than $2.8 million that's what the school district will pay a former station over allegations of sexual abuse. christen kinane sued saying she was hole leftmolested in the la. as part of the settlement, they said she has agreed to drop the lawsuit. late last night they released his statement saying in part, it is our hope that the settlement will help miss cunnane continue to heal. >> the 12-year-old boy accused of stabbing his sister to death will be arraigned in juvenile court today. he's accused of stabbing 8-year-old leila fowler in the family home in valley springs

last month. he told the police he scared off an intruder who had stabbed his sister, but at this point, police do not have a motive or at least they have not made it public. 4:35, there could be increased security at a south bay high school after a student was stabbed on a bus. police say a 16-year-old boy was stabbed are a fight on a bus. he is expected to survive. another 15-year-old boy was arrested. the attack happened just east of the interstate 680. both teen, students at independence high school. jury selection is set to begin in the retrifle an elderly psychiatrist accused of molesting young boys. dr. william ayers is since charged with molesting boys back in the 1990. the first trial ended in a hung jury. the doctor is in a napa state hospital treated for dementia, but he's been ruled competent to stand trial. that happened last year. several employees of the san

jose unified school district are facing embezzlement and fraud charges. district attorneys say the employees misused an estimated $15 million in grant are funding. he said that money is supposed to provide students with services, nutritional programs and was redirected into unwarranted pay increases. in one instance, he had $250,000 of the $15 million went to personal use. some of the employees including one who faces 94 felony counts could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. palo alto pushing forward a new law making it illegal for people to live in their cars. to resurrect a controversial vehicle dwelling ban which was scrapped last november. the new law would not only make it illegal to live out of vehicles but would also provide the city's homeless with better

factor drops the temps, it feels reich temps, by 5 to 7 degrees. you can see some of the winds coming out of the west at 20 miles an hour sustained. they're going to ramp up with a storm system headed our way. slated to bring us some showers as we head through tomorrow. we'll take you through that forecast. a chance of showers on friday as well. that's coming up on the seven-day. 63 in san francisco. 72 in leavitt city. >> we're looking at a smooth drive for the south bay. in fact, no major incidents. we'll look at 101 here. 680, a light easy drive. you see the light flow. the yellow, coming down towards 60. it's not a concern. however, north 87, as you're passing by curtner and downtown san jose, reports of an early morning crash. all the activity is currently pushed off to the shoulder. crews are on scene, that's a little late considering the

activity cleared at least 45 minutes ago. no additional distractions or no delays are on scene. meanwhile, smooth drive from 880 through fremont. as you head off the cast tour valley y, through the interchange, it's not blocking lanes but a quick slowdown there. and 880 shows you past the coliseum, the large view, you do have one lane, you lose the left lane north past 66. that will continue in spots up towards downtown where the southbound side will have crews as well. but no major issues because it's light traffic. back to you. buckle up or pay up. today, law enforcement agencies throughout san mateo county will be cracking down on drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts. they'll be focusing on south san francisco, san bruno and pacificica. the crackdown is to keep the area safer by the saturation

michael mcfowl leaving the embassy early this morning. russia's federal security service detained the employee who allegedly was carrying technical equipment, disguises and a large sum of money. the employee has already been handed over to u.s. embassy officials. four weeks after that massive and deadly explosion at a texas fertilizer plant, we'll be finally getting a few answers. federal and state agents expected to release some of their findings sometime tomorrow. they still have not said what caused this fire leading to the blast that killed 14 people. investigators not sure that the firefighters were fully aware of the danger they're getting to. >> president obama will be in washington to honor the law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty last year. the president will speak at the annual peace officer's memorial service on capitol hill. it will remember 321 peace officers who died in the line of

duty. among them, 37-year-old pfc officer kenneth young from fairfield. you'll recall he was shot and killed during a traffic stop on interstate 680 in alamo last september. o.j. simpson getting ready to take the stand in a las vegas courtroom. simpson trying to get a new trial on the conviction of armed robbery. today, he's expected to tell the court he never saw any guns during the 2007 holt room confrontation. witnesses have already testified that simpson's lawyers, well, they simply messed up, and simpson never knew about a plea deal offered in the case. a filmmaker wants to give abercrombie & fitch a piece of his mind. he said he was upset by remarks by the ceo that only thin and beauty peaceful should wear the

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back, everybody. on a wednesday morning. a little fog out there, with the lights fan out -- wow, i don't think that had anything to do with the weather. that might have been a technical thing there. christina loren will be along to talk about your forecast in minutes. some south bay high school students taking matters into their own hands fighting to save their wrestling program. students at live oak high in morgan hill, they say the school did not renew the contract of the team's head coach and staff for the team. and they're worried if they lose

the south bay. northbound, the commute okay. on the bottom of the screen, you see highway 87. you still have that crash with some activity and it's out of the lanes and doesn't look like a problem. it's been there for quite some sometime. this is getting votes for the favorite story of the week. a 7-year-old from wisconsin has just received a very special letter from the vice president of the united states. the second grader, his name is miles. he wrote to the vice president saying if guns had chocolate bullets no one would get hurt. biden wrote, in part, "i really like your idea. if we had guns that shot chocolate, not only would our country be safer, it would be heavier. people love chocolate. you are a good boy." >> that's great. >> that's a great story about a kid. and chocolate does have healing powers. all right. 4:56 right now. the death of a 6-year-old child
