coming out of the south. and let's take a live look above san francisco this morning. a much cooler start for the day. wednesday, may 15th, this is "today in the bay." >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, we have breaking news in the south bay where firefighters are responding to a fire near moffett field. we're hearing the fire is in the space systems building. this one right now a two-alarm fire. we do have "today in the bay" marla tellez on the scene now. a missing 9-year-old girl search is expected to eassume. mikaela lynch who has autism

wandered away from a vacation home and family and friends on mother's day. christie smith joins us. >> reporter: good morning, we're on highway 29 headed to the command post right now. at least 200 people. we're talking volunteers, search teams, law enforcement will be back at day break, working a ten-square mile area looking for mikaela lynch, some of the search teams coming as far away as nevada. and northern california. he was last seen at a vacation home near clear lake which is about 2 1/2 hours north of san francisco where she attended school. a surveillance video located yesterday shows mikaela passing all the homes near where she was staying and where last seen playing outside but she was going away from the water which is where investigators initially thought she was headed. this kind of changes the focus of their investigation. investigators say due to the medication that she was on, it

wasn't clear what she might do, but that she would take her clothes off when she got warm. she's autistic as we said and may not respond to voices of people calling for her. may not be able to walk across the street if she needs help from someone. the family says she has the mental capacity of a 1-year-old. so of course, searchers going to try and find her again today. but they'll have to do it without her help. but certainly, a lot of family, friends even strangers wants to come home safely. so we'll check back with you in about 30 minutes. but that's the story from here. i'll send it back to you in the studio. >> christie, thank you very much. this morning, a san jose neighborhood grieving the loss of a little girl hit and killed while walking across the street on bluefield drive in south san jose not too far from parkview elementary school. the family of 6-year-old eileen kuros said she along with her

2-year-old sister and aunt were hit by a lexus suv. eileen sadly died at the scene. her sister and aunt are recovering at valley medical center. the driver of the silver suv is cooperating with police. and investigators say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor here. police do not say if speed was the cause. and it's not clear at this point if the family was in the crosswalk when she were hit. >> just -- we just can't explain what we feel. it just feels so surreal to us. >> it's heartbreaking thinking about it right now. some neighbors have been pushing for speed bumps to slow down traffic in that area. they say a petition may begin in the next couple of days. it's 5:03.

a fire broke out in a home on daltrey weigh yesterday afternoon. some people were able to escape the home but told firefighters mother man was still inside. firefighters found that man on the second floor of the home and they pulled him out. sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the harbor seal pup rescued in palo alto waterway last month has sadly died. the marine center the pup died of a lung infection. the animal was less than 5 weeks old. officials are not sure exactly how he was separated from his mother. the people serving your beer and fries at at&t park are threatening to walk off the job. concession workers at the park are upset because they say the management company center plate wants to cap their health care benefits and isn't paying them enough. this weekend, the workers approved say strike.

880 north. earlier construction crews looked like they're on the move now. paving going on blocking a couple lanes overnight. they may be on the move in the next 20 minutes that's why we're seeing slowing as more cars hit the road, we're tracking that. 237, you see the marking on the map. there's that fire reported east of moffett field. we're concerned because yesterday evening, we had 237 shut down because of smoke and fire. a lot of folks sitting on the edge of their seats as well. we'll follow this fire again. this is off the freeway near moffett field. no effect right now 101 or 237 as far as the smoke goes. we're looking off to the north of whoer. san mateo bridge from the east to the peninsula. another look at 880 to oakland where that construction is clearing. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 5:07. friends and colleagues at a bay area nonprofit organization are mourning the loss of one of their own. dribbling a soccer ball from the u.s. to brazil for the world

cup, a man was killed unexpectedly during his charity trek. today, we have rob mayeda live. >> reporter: good morning, laura, raising awareness for the football project at this building here in berkeley, is this a group that donates soccer balls for people who live in poor country. richard swanson of seattle hoped to bring attention to the cause by dribbling a soccer ball 10,000 miles through 11 countries. final destination, brazil, 2014 in time for the world cup. he was just two weeks into the trek when yesterday morning, less than 24 hours ago, while dribbling down 101 in lincoln, oregon. a driver of a pickup truck accidentally hit and killed him. swanson died later at a hospital. he was 42 years old. a father, a man who loved to play soccer and very

easy to get along with. on his journey, he made friends with strangers who agreed to take him in each night along the way. >> all i can say, in the short period of time that we met richard and got to know richard, he quickly became like family. my kids loved him. like i said, i was jealous of his journey, being a soccer fan. >> reporter: and this is a statement from the one world football project in berkeley. we are deeply saddened to learn about richard's death. he was a very inspiring man who in a very short time walked his way into many lives. our thoughts are with his family." richard was dribbling one of the soccer balls that the company sends to the developing countries. what making the soccer balls so special, they're very durable. they don't need a pump to be inflated. reporting live here in berkeley.

welcome back, everybody. three men will soon go to trial in new jersey, accused of trying to sell investors fake facebook stock. a federal prosecutor is charging the three men with wire fraud, conspiracy, last year, the men allegedly offered people a chance to buy facebook stock just as the company was about to go public. prosecutors say they swindled potential investors out of nearly $7 million. tesla motors may be the wall street darling lately, but not everyone's so happy with that company. north carolina state senate unanimously passed a bill monday

night that essentially drops tesla from opening up a showroom in that state. the bill leaves tesla with two options stay out of the state entirely or go through an auto dealer like all other automakers have to do. states like massachusetts and new york are going to court to try to block the company from showrooms. $200 billion in deficit just vanished. and scott la cruz said politicians and committees had nothing to do with it. >> good morning. all of that fighting over the sequester, spending cuts and we cut the deficit by rethinking the math. the congressional budget office which is nonpartisan said the deficit will fall by $200 billion thanks in part to a growing economy and recent tax hikes. the new estimates give washington much more breathing room pushing fights like the debt ceiling off for months. washington still spends far more

than it has. and in hot for the past year to the tune of trillions but for some, this is more evidence of a recovering economy and not spending cut which is may be best for america. the european economy meanwhile in trouble. france says it's fallen back in recession. germany barely posted growth for the quarter. so when you mix all the euro countries together as a group, they've been in recession for a year and a half now. markets hit another record tuesday. you mentioned tesla. it's an all-time high. jackie deangelis is live at cnbc headquarters. good morning, jackie. >> hey, good morning, scott. futures lower this morning following yesterday's rally. it was an interesting day because that rally was spurred partly by some bullish comments on cnbc by a top hedge fund manager on the markets and the u.s. economy. and the dow posted its 18th straight gain on its tuesday. you got to love the tuesdays. thirst prt of the stocks in the

s&p 500 they hit all-time highs. today, we're going to get data on inflation, industrial production and also housing and earnings from macy's, so watch for those. the dow rising 123 points closing at 15,215. the nasdaq adding 23 at 3252. google ceo larry page is finally talking about his inability to talk. he was out quite sometime in 2012. he posted a blog explaining some of his inability to spook clearly. it has to do, jon, and laura, with vocal cord paralysis. he says it's no big deal but he says as a ceo it makes him choose his words carefully. it's glad to get an explanation. as you recall, apple was not asked about steve jobs. and we worry about gary. everything is going to be okay. >> very good news about that health. >> all right, scott. thank you very much.

5:15. christina loren is back. a cooler start to the morning. i had my window down, i love that blast of cold air. getting it going for you. >> you need whatever you can do at this early hour, right. 5:16 now, yeah, the wind is actually making it feel much cooler than the true temperatures. which is why we're starting out with the windchill factor. your true temperatures in the mid-50s. however, with that wind blowing around in the bay area, it's making it feel like the upper 40s. as we head throughout the day, winds are going to actually increase. we're having a blustery day across the bay area. you can clearly see the wind arrows are pointing on shore. a storm system on its way. it's going to change around here. major pattern shift as we head throughout the next 48 hours in particular. thursday through friday, that's when we see a significant change. i want to put that on the radar. patchy fog. even a few showers and drizzle

as well. we set the clock at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. count on kind of a slow drive to work. all of this rainfall coming in the heart of the morning drive. you're going to see showers start to dissipate. lingering activity showers along the way through the first part of friday. temperatures are going to warm up rapidly after that storm system gets out of here which is good news because we have to deal with the rain for the bay to breakers. this sunday, not going to be the case. nice and warm out there. the only civilized marathon where you're going to find a man in a monkey suit running alongside normal runners. it's going to be a 12k. my bad. 67 degrees at noon. you'll need to bring a lot of water. we're talking about thousands of people funneling into san francisco on sunday. that's going to be a traffic mess. 76 degrees. we'll get the traffic report in just a minute. we want to talk about the

showers thursday and friday. then the weekend, a little cooler. look at the difference between saturday and sunday. major warmup will be back in the 90s by monday. so more weather with flash headed our way. let's find out about the roads. hopefully, people are driving at speed, mike. >> yeah, we don't have any word of whiplash, but a couple spots to watch. early morning crash there, activity never cleared from the chp reports only because there may be an officer or crews on the shoulder there northbound as you're approaching kirchner be careful. folks are doing their business on the side of the road. and only a blitz here athere we're not concerned. that sis the slowdown we see north of 101. we saw it earlier heading up towards 237. now it's coming up through montview. that's the area where we had closure overnight. and repaving work and crews are

on scene. so this could be a slow drive as more folks hit the road and the crews just start to get cleared. it should be clear by 6:00. that's when you see clearing. just allow a couple extra minutes for the slow drive heading towards 237. yesterday, 237 was closed because of brush fires along the side of the road. that's why this morning fire is concerned. and we have that near the fire record at 237. no effect as well 101, we're tracking that. but folks on edge because of that. and also a point there's a yahoo! facility over there, one might see that smoke drifting over. watch for traffic control, caribbean, as you see it from your drive, we're looking over here, dumbarton bridge over to facebook, a smooth drive. and we do see that coming out of the elk mont pass.

if they do decide to move a deal between the team owners and the venture group looking to buy the team would dissolve. that would clear the way for the city of sacramento to buy the team. in an effort to keep wrestling in the olympics the sport could be getting a makeover. the head of the olympic association says the sport needs to re-evaluate its overall presentation from competing on the mat to the types of uniforms wrestlers wear. he wants the sport to follow the model set by mixed martial arts. back in february, the ioc recommended wrestling be dropped from the olympic games starting in 2020. the final vote is scheduled for september. >> hmm, new uniforms, making it easier for fans, a guy pinning down another guy. he guarantees it. the man who says he can predict whether or not your flight will be delays at much as three days in advance. a live look outside.

just in, new reports that angelina jolie not done with her surgery. not confirmed but "people" magazine reporting she were undergo surgery to remove her ovaries as well. jolie revealed in the op-ed piece in "the new york times" that she recently had her breasts removed to prevent breast kecancer. doctors say she has a 50% chance of contracting ovarian cancer.

>> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning. firefighters have put out a fire near moffett field. this broke out around 4:00 this morning at the lockheed martin facility in sunnyvale. we're hearing this is an electrical fire and it happened in the space systems building. it's been called a two-alarm fire. so far, no word on any damage or injuries. crews were able to put that flame out and all the fire minutes ago. this morning, a san jose neighborhood grieving the loss of a little girl hit and killed while crossing the street. it happened yesterday afternoon on bluefield drive in south san jose not far from parkview elementary school. the family of 6-year-old aileen quiroz said she and her sister and aunt were hit by a lexus

suv. her sister and aunt are recovering at the hospital. the driver is said to be cooperating with police and investigators say drug and alcohols do not appear to be a factor. some neighbors say they plan a petition for a speed bump in that area. more than $2.8 million that's what the moraga school district will pay. christen cunnane sued the district say sheg was moing shed by a teacher in 1990s. the school district said she agreed to drop her lawsuit. late last night, the school district releasing the statement saying in part, quote, it is our hope that the settlements will help ms. cunnane continue to heal and allow the district to continue working to educate and protect the children entrusted to us." jury selection is set to begin in the retrial of an

elderly psychiatrist accused of molesting young boys. dr. william ayers is being charged with molesting seven boys during psychiatric examines back in the 1990s. the first trial ended in a hung jury. the aging doctor has been in a napa state hospital being treated for dementia, but he was ruled competent to stand trial last year. the calaveras county boy accused of stabbing his younger sister to death will be in court today. the boy will reportedly be arraigned on second degree murder charges but will be tried as a juvenile. his lawyer said he's not seen evidence against the boy. he's accused of stabbing 8-year-old leila fowler in the family home in valley springs last month. he told the police he scared off an intruder who stabbed his sister. once the sun comes up, the search for a missing 9-year-old from san francisco is expected to resume in lake county. mikaela lynch who has autism wandered away from the family's

vacation home on mother's day and has not been seen since. christie smith is live with an update on the phone. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. it's starting to get light here on highway 29. for that search team to be back out looking for mikaela lynch again. she's been missing since sunday afternoon. we're not necessarily looking at the waterways clear lake as he did before. that's because a home surveillance camera in the neighborhood of a vacation captured actually running away from the waterways up the street. so these search teams that will look in a ten-square mile area hoping to find her. mikaela is 9 years old and has autism. she was at a vacation home playing with her brother when she apparently wandered away. investigators say because of the medication she was on, it was not unusual for her to take her clothes off. she was naked.

as far as the searchers are, it's a very difficult job because she may not respond to voices or even walk across the street if she needed help because of her condition. but even if the help is right there. so residents are being asked to check their own properties, cars, crawl spaces to see if perhaps she's there. a lot of people wanting her to come home safely. we'll check back with you in another half hour with that story. >> thank you very much. several current and former employees of the san francisco unified school district facing embezzlement and fraud charges. they're expected to turn themselves in this morning. districts attorney george gaston said employees misused an estimated $15 million in money. gascon said that money that is supposed to provide students with nutrition programs and other programs was actually redirected to bonus us and unwarranted pay increases. in one instance, he said about

"today in the bay." welcome back, everyone. it's 5:40. new candle for the military this morning. an army officer who works in ft. hood in the sexual assault and prevention office is accused of sexual assault himself. tracie potts is live in washington. tracie, he isn't the only military officer accused of sexual misconduct. >> reporter: laura, it's the second time two weeks this has happened. and that's ruffled the feathers of the pentagon. we don't know the name of the officer because he hasn't been formally charged but we're told he's accused of pandering sexual misconduct and the army unit there investigating. last week, it was the air force, and a lieutenant again in charge of helping sexual assault victims arrested this time and charged for trying to grope a woman in a parking lot, not too far from the pentagon. and now the pentagon is responding. defense secretary chuck hagel

saying that he wants a top-down review of everyone who's involved in the sexual assault programs, prevention programs, to make sure that they're fit for the job. that they're not missing something here. whether or not this is a coincidence, of the two incidents that are dollar have happened together, but they're also investigations going on at lackman air force base. 30 instructors involved there. and a report that came out last week that said 26,000 accusations which is a big jump from the year before. but comparatively, very few actual reports. so the military now really putting their hands into this looking closely to a systemic problem for people charged with preventing and helping sexual assault victims actually now being accused of it. laura. >> remarkable to hear. second one. thank you very much. this morning, north korea said an american citizen sentenced to 15 years hard labor was moved to a, quote, special prison this morning. kenneth bae was arrested back in

november when he arrive ready as a tourist to northeastern north korea. pyongyang said he carried out, quote, hostile acts against kim jong-un's regime. and the u.s. ambassador to russia now dealing with the fallout after the russians say they caught a cia spy. this is video of ambassador michael mcfall leaving the russian foreign ministry early this morning after meeting with the russian officials. just yesterday, russia's federal security service detained a u.s. embassy employee who was allegedly carrying technique equipment, disguise and a large sum of money. the employee has been handed over to u.s. embassy officials. four weeks after the massive and deadly explosion at a texas fertilizer plant we may finally get answers. some state and federal agents are expected to release some of the findings tomorrow. they still have not said what caused the fire leading to the

>> firefighters working very hard. we'll keep you posted. meteorologist christina loren is back to tell us about a cool day. >> we're talking about winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour. sustained winds to 50 miles an hour. hopefully, they can get ahold of that fire. starting with a live shot. you see mostly cloudy conditioning to start the day in sunol. anytime you have a fire like that, winds only fan the flames. we're going to keep you on top of that. 50 degrees to start the day. livermore, 52 in san jose and 51 in sunnyvale. when you see the colors, the oranges and reds that's where we expect to see the heaviest winds. we're talking sustained speeds 10 to 25 miles per hour. later on 25 to 30 miles an hour. and the strongest winds will be

at the immediate coast. as we head throughout the next couple of days, things continue to change. an area of low pressure continues to arrive as we head thursday into friday. that's going to bring news to lower the pollen levels and better air quality. we have to deal with some showers, especially with the heart of morning drive. when we meet back here, we will be tracking showers on the radar. by 9:00 a.m., the bulk of the moisture comes through. showers break apart. by 5:00 p.m., still lingering activity, we're expecting clearing by friday morning. showers around al at least until noon. nothing heavy. a quarter of an inch. and the coastal mountains will also get a fair amount of shower activity as we head throughout tomorrow. 75 degrees for livermoore. 75 for santa teresa. and 72 degrees in san jose. you probably want to pull out that coast. noticeably cooler. by monday, we're back in the

90s. so if you're looking for cooler weather to take care of the outdoor activities, you get a couple days with low 70s and upper 60s. we'll check on that drive. lots of stuff happening on a wednesday morning, mike. >> yes, very busy morning. for peninsula riders from caltrain. i'm getting the update from caltrain. they're advising to use b.a.r.t. in and outside of san francisco, transferring at the millbry station. we had a deadly crash a pedestrian was hit and killed on the caltrain tracks so now there are major delays for the entire system. trains are not aloud to go through that area. they're going to be halted as you're coming up through millbrae. keep that in mind. northbound can get to milbury, but southbound will have to travel as well. take b.a.r.t. down to the milbury station and transfer on to the area south taf there. the lockheed fire is not an

books but actually taking the lead. the lawsuit came shortly after apple entered the e-book market with the ipad. publishers settled apple chose to fight. now, an e-mail released by the justice department shows then ceo steve jobs writing rupert murdoch. jobs said, quote, throw in with apple, we'll see if we can make a go of this create a mainstream e-book market at 1299 and 1499. until then, amazon was just charging $9.99 for any book. the online course system now says you can earn a masters degree from computer scientist online from georgia tech. it already offers online classes towards a bachelors. in places like san jose state. this is a win for just about everybody. students online degree will cost about a sixth as much of the
