and the winds are blowing into the area as a storm system barrels towards the coastline today. you'll need your jacket. 10 degrees cooler. tomorrow, you'll need your umbrella. time to to come out to door step. heavy on the peninsula. i'll give you the alternate. and what you need do with that caltrain ticket. and breaking news. coming up, this is a live look at a massive fire near a elementary school on the peninsula. this is may 15th, wednesday, this is "today in the bay." >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. start ought to be a very busy wednesday morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> absolutely it is. i'm jon kelley. let's get you to breaking news on the peninsula. the chopper live in redwood city. just at huge residential fire right now. this is a residential area, we have confirmed.

this is happening right across the street from fair oaks elementary school. this one recently jumped up to a three-alarm fire. >> we saw the flames leaping from the building there. fair oaks and oakside avenue in redwood city. take a look at the smoke as well. the winds are out in that area. making it tougher for firefighters to get a handle on this one. we first started covering this in the 5:00 hour. but two to three alarms now as the chopper shot zooms out a little bit. you can see the smoke billowing in the air. it starts in a car port in the area there. and spread to the homes above. >> again, it's across the street from the elementary school. that being fair oaks elementary. we have scott mcgcgrew working that now. >> as well as that, we have bob redell head to get scene. he's going to be there in moment >> that looks like a rough one.

>> they continue to tackle that. in the meantime, sprinklers being credited with putting out an early morning fire at moffett field. this one broke out at about 4:00 at the lockheed martin facility in sunnyvale. we're hearing that it broke out in the space facilities. more breaking news to tell you about. this one in south san francisco where a train unfortunately has hit a person on the caltrain track there. for more details on this, let's check in with mike inouye. he's got the latest. >> yes, this is never good news for the pedestrian. we just got confirmation from caltrain that a person has been killed as a result of this crash. the investigation going on at the scene and that's why trains are halted just north of san bruno station. i'm showing you the golden gate bridge. traffic is moving smoothly from the north bay.

if you're heading south along the peninsula you cannot take caltrain all the way down because of that stoppage. they're advising folks to take the millbrae and b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. is honoring those caltrain tickets. allowing to you transfer from b.a.r.t. to caltrain, south of the scene of the crashing and continue down the peninsula for that service. and northbound the same thing. transferring northbound at millbrae, get on the b.a.r.t. at the end of the line. take that into san francisco. again, b.a.r.t. will honor the caltrain tickets because of the shutdown right now just north of san bruno situation. caltrain is not offering any additional service but not seeing any delays for the service street. meanwhile, we're looking at the south bay where traffic flows smoothly, northbound. look at this, northbound to 87. shows north of an earlier crash. this is jamming up northbound 101. you might want to consider using 280 to 287 downtown.

this is north of alan rock and mckee. passing the overcrossing there making its way across tully road. a live look at the toll bridge. the metering lights turned on actually a minute ago. that's how quickly it comes from the metering lights into the parking lot. a heavy slow go, guys. just about an hour from right now, the desperate search for a missing 9-year-old girl from san francisco is expected to continue in lake county. mikaela lynch who has autism wandered away from a family friend's vacation home on mother's day. let's certainly hope they find her very quickly. christie smith is headed to clear lake right now and she joins us on the phone. with an update. >> reporter: good morning, we just got into lake county. and the sun is coming out in the search to pick up for mikaela link, the 9-year-olds with autism. but they were focusing on the

waterways. a ten-yeah mile area around the area, where they was playing with her brother where she likely wandered away on sunday. this is 2 1/2 hours north of san francisco. we're told today that they have a surveillance tape that shows her northbound and now police believe that she has no clothes on which apparently she has a habit of doing because of the medication she was on. about 200 or so search and rescue teams as far away as nevada are helping out mikaela may not be able to help with her own rescue. police say she doesn't respond to stimuli and neighbors are being asked to check their own properties, cars, crawl spaces just to make sure she's not there. certainly, a lot of people,

family, friends, strangers hoping she comes home safely. that's the sorry in lake county, i'll send it back to you guys in the studio. >> thank you very much, christie. 6:06. a 12-year-old boy will be in court facing second degree murder charges in the death of his 8-year-old sister. a litt leila fowler was stabbed in her home. her brother blamed an intruder for the crime. >> i'm not going to comment on anything about his condition, but i can tell you, he's holding up remarkably well and really tough circumstances. >> the second degree murder charge means prosecutors do not believe the killing was premeditated. a san jose family grieving this morning. and a neighborhood simply outrage ared after a young girl was hit and killed while crossing the street. her aunt and little sister in

the hospital. marla is joining us live with why this one could actually have been prevented. good morning. >> reporter: 6-year-old aileen quiroz was pronounced dead on the scene here at bluefield drive. not far from capitol expressway. you can see the chalk marks out here where all this happened yesterday afternoon. they still remain this morning. i wanted to show you this growing memorial for little aileen quiroz that has been established. you can see the roses and candles and teddy bears left behind. i also wanted to point out that we are on the same block as parkview elementary school which is over my shoulder here. police say she along with her 2-year-old sister and aunt were crossing when they were hit with a silver suv lexus. aileen's aunt and sister are in

intensive care. drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor. the simple believes the driver was simply going too fast. a neighbor said she lives on bluefield. >> there's been everything occasions she herself was almost hit and she made that known to the elementary school to go ahead and maybe put somebody there, a crossing gouard or someone. >> reporter: prior to the deadly accident, some neighbors say they've been abdicating for speed bumps. other neighbors say they don't want them. investigators not telling us, it's still not clear if the family was actually in the crosswalk which you're looking at right now, in front of parkview elementary. it's unclear if they were in the crosswalk when this accident happened yesterday afternoon. i have put in a call to san jose police to find out in the driver

on where you're waking up. 45 in santa rosa by noon today, it will be in the 70s. a much cooler day on tap with that area of low pressure onshore driving through more cloud cover throughout the day. 75 inland. 72 degrees bayside. and 64 degrees at the coast. we've got the seven-day forecast. i'm going to time out the showers that we're expecting and let you know who is going to pick up the most through the next couple of days. yeah, major change in the pattern, guys. it's 6:10, people serving up your beer and garlic fries at at&t park, they're threatening to walk out on the job. concession employees are upset because the management company center plate. center plate calls it unfortunate and the negotiations are still active.

breaking news happening in redwood city. quickly grew to a three-alarm. now, we're seeing a lot of smoke going there. what we see is flames just leaping out. san mateo county trying to tackle this one getting assistance from outside agencies as well. you see from the aerial vushiewo many smoke. it started in a carport on fair oaks avenue. our own scott mcgrew was calling the school to see if there's any cancellations,thy delays. what parents should do if they have to drop off the kids in the area. so far, we know there's starr testing in that school this week. so they want the kids to come.

but what we do not know if they're holding off allowing the kids to come to school. they're developing a plan of action. this fire looks like they're starting to get a little bit of a handle on it as we don't see many flames leaping out of it. christina loren is looking at the winds in that area. bob redell is actually there at the scene. right now, let's get a check of today's top stories. volunteers out in clear lake searching for a missing 9-year-old girl from san francisco. surveillance video captured mikaela lynch running down the street near the available indication home where she was staying. lynch does have autism and she cannot speak. there's another fire at lockheed martin facility. it is now out. right next to moffett field. firefighters say that fire broke out in the space systems there. but a sprinkler system put out the fire before the crew ares

got to the scene. and "people" magazine reporting that angelina jolie also planning to have her ovaries removed. the actress reporting in "the new york times" yesterday that she had a double mastectomy, due to a faulty gene that significantly increased her risk for breast cancer. a man dribbling a soccer ball 10,000 miles to brazil died after being hit by a pickup truck on the oregon coast. 42-year-old richard swanson set out to the berkeley futbol program for delivering soccer balls to poor countries. he was a very inspiring man who in a very shortw3 time walked h way into many lives. our thoughts are with his family." the bill blocks tesla from opening a showroom in the state. the bill leaves tesla with two options now, stay out of the

note, the winds. whether they can take that smoke. >> yeah, you can see that smoke, typically, it's slow moving but we do have strong winds in the area and winds will continue to increase throughout the day. what i can tell you they're not dry downsloping winds from land to sea. it's the opposite, we're getting that cool moist air on shore. we'll stay on top of that. right now, we'll take a look at our buoys locaé9÷ offshore. they're clocking the highest wind gusts. 38 to 40 miles per hour. and those are the strong gusts. 10 to 15 and 21 miles per hour in san francisco so it's kind of a blustery day even or the wind, the storm system moving closer and closer throughout the bay area. that creates instability. we stop the clock on the your

futurecast, this is your strongest wind gusts. the pinks, the reds, the oranges, the strongest winds. san fran down to san mateo. then tomorrow, a whole other scenario arrives we're talking about blankets of low clouds tomorrow. all across the bay area. all the inland valleys and showers on the way. this is going to leave the lower pollen and better air quality. but we do need shower activity for the air quality. we don't need any additional growth when it comes to fire. most of our hills are already brown. we're going to stay on top of everything that has to do for fires here in california. we're gearing up for what could be a bad one. when the showers come through, tomorrow mostly through the morning drive. by 11:00 a.m., showers start to break apart deteriorating. that continues to 5:00 p.m., we lose the chance for rain. but temperatures are going to tumble from the mid-70s today into the upper 60s by friday

morning. then we're going to jump right back up to the beginning of the weekend. big day on sunday. bays to breakers happening in san francisco. it's going to be a hot one this year so make sure you're drinking lots of water if you're heads out to that 12k run. mike has a couple things. we'll look into the peninsula with a smooth drive a little slow on el camino. not a major concern, 101 and san bruno. the freeways are good. the train is not. we had the deadly crash that happened on the caltrain tracks north of san bruno. and halt of service. trains are single-tracking north of there. expect major delays. here's your alternate, between millbrae and san francisco use the b.a.r.t. system. caltrain will come up to that station. use that station as a transfer point between the two agencies. into san francisco, get off at caltrain into b.a.r.t. vice versa.

assaults from happening. good morning. >> good morning, laura. this has also ruffled feathers on the pentagon where they're trying to figure out is it a coincidence or some issue with sexual assault preference officers in the military. second time now, in two weeks, this time down in texas, at ft. hood, a sergeant first class, accused of pandering, abusive sexual contact. mistreating subordinates. people working under him. he's accused, so we don't have his name or picture. the criminal unit is investigating. of course, this comes last week when lieutenant jeff krusinski was arrested of trying to grope a woman in a parking lot actually not very far from the pentagon. and now the pentagon is trying to figure out what do authorities do about this. a spokesman said chuck hagel was angry. and he said especially, let's make this investigation quick.

let's make sure we find out what happened here. he's ordered a top-down review of all the prevention officers. those people in charge of helping sexual assault victims across the military, not just in the army and air force, they want to make sure there's no systemic problem here, laura. >> exactly. thank you, tracie, for that live report from washington. 6:32, jury selection set to begin in the retrail of an elderly psychiatrist accused molesting young boys. dr. william ayers is charged with molesting seven boys during psychiatric exams in the 1990s. the first arrest in 1990, that one ended with a hung jury. the aging doctor is in a napa state hospital being treated for dementia but ruled competent to stand trial last year. several employees of the san jose unified school district are facing embezzlement charges and expected to turn themselves in.

superintendent george gascon said the employees misused money. they said the money that was supposed to go to student was redirected into unwarranted pay increases. some could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. right now back out to redwood city for a breaking news. the three-alarm fire, we've just got information in, it looks like they're containing this one. we want to update you on fair oaks elementary school across the street. we're being told the school is fine and schedule today open on time. we wanted to let you know, parents that your kids will be okay to go into the school. bob redell on the scene. weather conditioning affecting this one. let's check in with christine loren >> we saw the fire get bigger between 5:00 and 5:30 this

morning. that is because the winds are san mateo recording to redwood city, winds out of the west at 9 miles an hour. one thing that did help starting to push that moist ocean air into places like redwood city. also we're seeing winds straight out of the west. that means winds were not variable at the time they tried to fight the fire so that played a factor. this morning, temps are cool. grab that coat if you're getting the little ones ready for school. you want to dress them for cool temperatures. inland will hit about 70 degrees. we'll round out the day just at 75 degrees. 72 bay side at the coast. 64 degrees, the winds are going to increase throughout the day as the storm system moves closer and closer to the california coastline. that's going to bring showers tomorrow. we're timing that out in the next report at 6:34. mike is busy on a wednesday morning. what are you tracking now, mike?

>> we have new issues. this time a new issue for the bay bridge, affecting that there. looking at the bay bridge toll times look how clear it is. this is much clearen than a half hour ago. the backup on the maze coming to the scene. this is from the left side of your screen across the middle to the right it's jammed up. coming out of oakland and approaching the maze. reports of someone trapped under a car. fortunately there was a nurse in that backup, she or he was able to to help that person. we'll show you flight around the berkeley curve. and presumably going to be an issue. heading into the maze as well. coming up into 880, the toll plaza, you have the advantage of coming through the accidents. take 80 to 880 north. meanwhile, a crash reported at the interchange. there may be activity in the lanes at the transition. we're watching for a little

vacation home on mother's day. christie smith has just arrived there. >> reporter: we just made it to the command post near clear lake. so far three canine units here and more people arriving by the minute. they're searching a ten-square mile area. a surveillance camera captured the image of the 9-year-old. and then it changed the attention of where they were looking. they're going away from waterways which is where they were going before. police are going from the known direction of where she was down the street from the vacation home where she wandered away. in the tape she has no clothes on, police say due to the medication she was on, they sometimes takes her clothes off when she gets warm.

the toll plaza. as it could, we're seeing a burst of traffic and a lot more coming through this area than just a few minutes ago which christina showed you. the bay bridge metering lights were turned on early this morning. this backup will quickly fill the parking lot and this will be the issue. an earlier injury crash which has now just seconds ago cleared. approaching that interchange, that ripple coming back over here as the commuter approaches towards the maze. that is the flow of traffic and the flow back here. expect a slowdown on the east shoreway. the peninsula looking pretty smooth as far as your flow for 101 and 280. the issue is on the tracks here. san bruno, still single-tracking caltrain lines. because of a deadly crash. the investigation continues. all the people on that caltrain has been transferred over. they only have one track open so major delays through the area.

now b.a.r.t. is your link between millbrae and san francisco. through both directions, the millbrae station, b.a.r.t. is honoring the passes. sam trans is also offering that to be offered. 101 northbound, let me show you a quick view of that san jose shot. where we had the northbound traffic slowing quite a bit, things have cleared because of the flow because of the earlier crash cleared from the area. on the map again, we'll show you the drive from 101, had a chance to build from capitol expressway. 287 kicking in. will continue to build for the next half hour through this stretch of 880 and cupertino. we're seeing slowdowns. all the way into fremont. speed in the 50s. that crash has not cleared.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the scene there. what are the firefighters telling you? >> reporter: it's a six-unit apartment building across from fair oaks elementary. the fire started a little bit after 5:00 this morning. i know we have video from earlier. and not seeing the flames, but still lots of smoke. one reason why it's still burning, the reason the firefighters have not been able to put it out, they have taken a defensive posture. they just do what they can from the perimeter. right now, there's a ladder truck that is dumping a lot of water on this building. trying to get the fire out. but they don't have the advantage of being inside or cut a hole up in inside. it's going to take a lot longer to put this out. the pop line there are two

people have been hurt. minor injuries. minor injuries one in the arm and the other one -- as far as the fire department had too call for backup two times. so it's now a third alarm fire. this building is still burning here. and on the street, there are a lot of people that are out here with their pajamas on and blankets wrapped around them. it's hard to tell how many are from the actual building that caught fire and how many from the surrounding building. this has been contained to o building. as far as north fair oaks elementary is concerned this is across the street and this is not affecting that. this is nothing that's causing damage. the fire department was not under the impression that this was a set class here. for the school district, it does not seem like it will be having an impact on the class here at fair oaks elementary.

again, a third-alarm fire burning in a six-unit apartment building in redwood city. two minor injuries, only firefighters hurt in fighting the fire. they're taking a defensive posture waiting for this to burn out. they do not know the cause. on the back side and ended up on the second floor. as far as the cause, that is still to be determined reporting live redwood city, bob redell. >> bob, before you go, how tough was it to get to that fire? we know that fair oaks elementary is running as normal. but how tough is it for parents to get to the school? are the streets closed, do you know? >> reporter: one street is shut down. that's the street where the fire is -- i'm trying to see if this is the street that parents would use to drop their kids off. i'm not sure if there's another entrance to the school. so there is the one street, the

street i'm on here, fair oaks has got some congestion. and then the street that i am on, which is oak side, this is the street that is shut down. so if you have a child that goes to school here, keep in mind, oak side is shut down and actually part of fair oaks is, too. so you're probably going to have to park a short distance away and walk the kids up to their class. >> all right. thank you very much. bob redell live from the scene there. we'll continue to watch that as they're going to have to mop up as well. a san jose family is grieving this morning and a neighborhood said to be outraged after a young girl was hit and killed while crossing the street. her aunt and little sister are in the hospital this morning. bluefield drive. we just talked to a mother who go to parkview elementary school. she said that the traffic out here is just a mess. that drivers whiz on by going well beyond the 25-mile-an-hour posted speed limit. and neighbors have been rallying to get speed bumps put here on bluefield drive. it hasn't happened yet. this is right where 6-year-old i aileen quiroz was killed. police say aileen and her aunt and sister were crossing the street when they were hit by the suv lexus. the family believes excessive speed was definitely a factor. the 6-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. her sister and aunt are in intensive care.
