where champions rise up to the occasion on this thursday, may 16th. this is "today in the bay." good thursday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia cannon. i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. we have an update to breaking news where police now say a weapon may have been used in the beating of a man found dead in the jack in the box parking lot on blossom hill and snell. this happened overnight. that crime scene right now, this one is so complex this morning, it looks like it will be hours before that area is finally reopened and "today in the bay's" marla tallez is live at the scene right now. telling us what she has just learned from police. marla, good morning. >> good morning. i just spoke to an officer who is blocking off and taking care of the traffic as it makes its way by blossom hill road. not allowing anybody into this parking lot where this crime scene has been set up. he doesn't know if the coroner has been called yet.

it could be at least a couple more hours. police have been out here since 1:20 this morning when they got the 911 call. they were told that a man was found unconscious behind this jack in the box on blossom hill. they did find him. san jose fire was called out. they pronounced him dead at the scene. police say the man was assaulted with some sort of a weapon and, again, pronounced dead right behind this jack in the box near a dumpster and also near the restaurant's drive through. his identity has not been released. no word on any suspects. police say, whoever did this, that means is still on the run this morning. the jack in the box was open at the time. it is now closed. it is a 24-hourçm restaurant. it should be open. a spoke to an employee insigh s. investigators have been very active all morning long. earlier, when it was dark, they had their flashlights going

through the bushes looking for any evidence. they are snapping pictures of every angle of the jack in the box behind and in front. this is right at blossom hill and snell. you mentioned that very busy intersection, not that busy just yet. your commute won't be affected. if you have business to take care of, right in this particular block, you won't be able to access because of police activity. this is san jose's 16th homicide of the year. live in san jose, marla tallez, "today in the bay." >> also in san jose, another gruesome crime scene. this morning, police are hoping clues found inside a hotel room will lead them to a killer. a maid discovered a woman's body at the holiday inn express. the woman's name and age are nop being released at this time. investigators will not say whether she checked in alone or how long she had been staying at the hotel. a 1-year-old boy and his aunt are now dead this morning after being stabbed to death

inside a san jose home. what makes the story even more heartbreaking, a family relative has been named as a person of interest and is now in police custody. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at that scene of the crime right now with the new details on this ongoing investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: crime scene investigators are finally starting to wrap up some of their equipment after a very long night. they have been going in and out of this small home after a triple stabbing. two people dead including a 1-year-old child. now, after a six-hour manhunt, u.s. marshals in san francisco police detained a person of interest. 27-year-old reuben ramirez was detained in san francisco. they did not call him a suspect but said, we have no other persons of interest. about 3:30 yesterday afternoon, a man came home to a horrific

scene, a 48-year-old woman, a 1-year-old boy dead. a 3-year-old girl hurt. all of them had been stabbed. it is believed that the woman was babysitting them and that all are related. the man who made the gruesome discovery, an astash yo perez called police and called his brother. >> translator: my brother told us to come fast because we have a very big problem. he told us his wife was dead. >> the victims are believed to be a niece and a nephew. a woman, the person of interest, his mother. a pastor of a nearby church told us ramirez has a history of mental illness and was off his medication and had been off his medication for a while. deputies reportedly responded to this address very recently for a report of violence. the survivor, the 3-year-old girl, listed in stable condition. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." a developing story happening

in north texas where at least six people are dead. as many as 100 people hurt. 250 people are homeless. it all happened after a deadly tornado outbreak near the town of granbury. right now, at daybreak, rescuers are continuing the search for seven people unaccounted for. right now, it is unclear if they are just missing or if they are away from the area when that tornado hit. overnight, those who lived through the tornado described their fear. >> everything is demolished. >> the house started shaking. we in in a closet. you can hear. it sounded like a train going on. the same storm caused several other tornadoes in neighboring to towns in north texas. again, at least six people dead in the town of granbury, 65 miles southwest of dallas. in southern california, very, very tough for firefighters. a fast-moving wild fire burning

through 3,000 acres north of los angeles in the los padres national forest. as a safety precaution, both evacuated and many of the roads are now closed. so far, the fire, q lot of work ahead. a lot of work ahead for the firefighters. only 10% contained on this one. >> going to be waking up to a little bit of rain. grab that umbrella before you head out the door, right, christina? >> 6:07. good morning to you. this is san francisco. you can't make out the tops of these city buildings. give yourself extra tichlt slick conditions across the board. you don't want to be traveling too fast if you have the little ones with you. give yourself extra tichlt keep the ey your eyes on the road. 1:15 flight delays. a lot of people trying to get out of the town for the weekend. we are the only city across the nation with significant flight delays. count on these to ripple out

throughout the day as the conditions are going to continue to deteriorate. here is what we are working with right now. radar tells the story of the day. showers steadily streaming onshore. the buloç of the morning has coe through the east bay. these showers have been steadily moving over the san jose and east bay. count on slick conditions down there as well as we progress throughout the morning hours. we are going to see more of this activity getting a little bit of a lull throughout the mid-section of the day. we will get more shower activity as you head home from work. keep that in mind. you can see clearly, heaviest pockets coming through the east bay. you want to travel cautiously where you have pretty gusty winds out there. west at 11 miles per hour. i'm watching a lot of mike inouye's traffic cameras. the wind is picking up and will continue to as the storm blows in. 59 degrees in san francisco. coming up, i'm going to show you our first pacific named storm of the hurricane season, which just

windshield wipers on, you must have the head lights on as well. that's the law in california. we'll give you the slowdown as well. at least 60 people are dead. entire neighborhoods are completely demolished in texas. one of the twisters was as long as a mile wide. a disaster area has been declared. sheriff's investigators questioning a person of interest. a 3-year-old girl was also stabbed. she is no yw in the hospital. 29-year-old rue been ramirez has mental illness hand has had run-ins with the authorities before. a wild fire in central southern california this morning in kern county. it has burned 3,000 acres forcing the evacuation of a school and a campground in the frazer park area.

ho news conference responding to the irs scandal. the chair woman of the tea party caucus, michele bachmann, is expected to push for further investigation president obama will answer reporters question about the irs scandal at a news conference later this morning. haes already announced acting irs chief, steven miller, has been replaced. eric holder tells congress he is going through with a criminal investigation of the irs. >> a tough couple of weeks for the white house and with three simultaneous scandals going on. the obama administration could use some good news. >> that comes in the form of tesla. they are going to pay back their controversial department of energy loan completely and early. they say they will do that by selling more stock. about a quarter billion dollars worth at current prices.

a total of 12 people dead, 30 others hurt after two car bombs go off in baghdad. among the dead, a 7-year-old child. this attack follows a wave of bombings on wednesday. the spike in violence coming as tension grows between the shiite-led government and iraq's sunni minority. texas tornado outbreak. at least six are dead. up to 100 injured. 250 people said to be homeless this morning. seven people are still missing. just take a look at what those people are waking up to. some of the homes as you see here are just massive. but the roof completely ripped off. some just completely leveled. it has been a really tough run for all the people in north texas right now for what they are waking up to. >> a devastating natural

disaster there. that very same line of thunderstorms that spawned that tornado also bringing some heavy rains and flooding to dallas. new video we have showing knee-deep water out there. take a look at that. that is along a dallas area interstate. that caused, as you can expect there, cars just backed up for as far as you can see. what a traffic snafu with all that flooding we are going to learn more about the fertilizer explosion that killed 15 and injured dozens in west texas. investigators have ruled out natural causes, such as lightning. they will announce the results at a conference later today happening in southern california, 3,000 acres in the los padresbd$ñ national forest being scorched by the fast-moving wild fire. nearby school and campground had to be evacuated. a lot of rhodes completely shut down.

so far, the firefighters are working very hard, not having a lot of success. only 10% contained. sdwr. >> a 19-year-old man now under arrest in a mass shooting at a mother's day parade, left 19 people injured. 19-year-old akeen scott was arrested overnight. ironically, scott was supposed to appear in court today anyway on unrelated charges after he posted bond last week. >>. >> this next one is any mother's or parent's nightmare. the heart stopping moment for a mother. her stroller got away from her. she wasn't paying attention. the baby was on the tracks. fortunately, it wasn't an electric cal track. the mother jumps down, grabs the baby. you can see some people trying to help her out. the baby, a 14-month-old toddler was tossed on the tracks. the train was only minutes away there. the mother helped out the baby. the people there helped her out. the baby only suffered some small injuries, unbelievably,

she wasn't more injured. this he finally pulled everybody to safety. authorities say it looks like that woman obviously got disstrablthed and forgot to put the brake on the stroller there. the little girl suffers a cut on her forehead. that one could have been much more devastating. thank god, they were able to get her off the tracks. my god. 6:26. i want to check your forecast with meteorologist, christina loren. >> everybody is talking about the rain. >> everybody certainly is. a hot topic as we head throughout the day. a cool topic as temperatures only ramp up into the mid to upper 50s. in places like san francisco, we are talking about the low 70s in san jose. look at all that will green on the radar. that's going to be the case as we head throughout your morning rush. count on giving yourself a little extra time. that way, you can accommodate for any sort of slowdowns brought about by this rain. temperatures will be cool enough for a jacket. grab that umbrella. it may not rain where you live. what you will notice, though, a

. nbc bay area. 6:30. good morning. thanks for hanging around with us. we are following a developing story. the moment it hit the town of granbury, 65 miles southwest of dallas, amateur video showing one of the powerful twisters that tore through north texas. six people are dead, more than 100 injured. 250 people are homeless because of the tornado. in cleburne, texas, several neighborhoods are gutted. "today in the bay's" jeff smith, joins us with a look at the

damage. >> reporter: where i am standing now is the epicenter of the damage from this tornado. take a look behind me. you can see all of these bricks from this one house, hundreds of them, thrown across the front yard of this house. look at the roof up above, completely destroyed. the wood, the shingling, all ripped off of the roof because of the tornado. take a look here. i just wanted to show you physically, how heavy the roof is. this weighs a lot. it was just ripped off like a play thing. there is little power in the town of cleburne right now. it is very, very dark. we put all of our lights on this one house. there are dozens like it across the city. you can see why there is no power. take a look at all those power lines. they were ripped to shreds, thrown across the street. there were down power lines all over the city. dozens of homes have serious damage. we were told from the mayor of

clayburn, no one was killed but seriously injured. the middle school has serious damage. school is canceled for today. we expect school cancellations as well for friday. at daybreak today, investigators will be going door to door checking for people who may be trapped. for now, a waiting game. they know no one has been killed. they will be going door to door in a few hours. back to you. >> jeff smith, thank you very much for the update. complete devastation down there. >> so hard to see. sometimes they get the warnings, sometimes they don't. don't have time. >> with those tornadoes, nothing you can do to get somewhere safe deep below for protection. >> much more mild close to us. you are getting a warning about the rain this morning. checking in with meteorologist, christina loren.

wett wetter roads reported through livermore. a lot of slowing approaching that scene. we will look over to the west to 580 drive through castro valley. smooth until you get to the 238 interchange. south 880 build through hayward, the morning commute typical. look at this live shot from the san mateo toll plaza. those changing conditions as well. moisture, clouds, drizzle coming through the area as well. so far, across the bay, you are okay on the san mateo bridge itself. the backup at the toll plaza. speeds into the 40s and 50s. a motorcycle with a flat at the toll plaza. south 101, very slow after a crash and a stall still causing a slowdown there. 6:35. two boys in the hospital this morning. both shot in vallejo.

it all happened in an alley off of arkansas street just after 7:00 last night. police say both victims are under the age of 12. one was shot in the foot. the other in the shoulder. no word on their condition. vallejo times herald says two teenage suspects are in custody in connection with the shooting. police have yet to confirm it. >> pleasanton police on the lookout for a pair of brazen criminals who attacked a woman and tried to kidnap her baby boy. police say the woman was walking with her infant son on west las t%0a%qq'ed around 6:30 on may 8th when she was approached by two men. one man pushed her to the ground, grabbed her purse. the other one grabbed the stroller with the baby still inside and then took off. you talk about a frightening scene richlt now, police say while he was running with that stroller, the stroller tipped off. he then tried to pull the baby out but he couldn't. both of those men ultimately ran away. the woman and her baby, we're happy to5÷ report, were not hur

in this incident. >> that's braising. it is 6:36. the owner of a party bus company, now in jail. this is nearly a year after a woman fell out of the bus to her death. jon saint jt. james is facing c of vehicular manslaughter. a woman died after falling out of a party bus on the way back to santa cruz after a concert. they determined that st. james exhibited gross negligence in overseeing the maintenance of his bus in ensuring his customer's safety. police in san francisco warning residents of a scam involving wake utility reps. police say the scammers pose as representatives of pg&e or the san francisco water department. they call residents on the phone claiming their bills are overdue and their service is going to be shut off if they don't pay immediately. the scammers then tell the

more than 20 injured after a small plane crash in northern nepal. it was trying to land on an airstrip when it crashed on the banks of the river. it belonged to the state-owned nepalian airlines the ceiling of a shoe factory in cambodia caved in. nobody was trapped, they don't believe. this collapse coming just three weeks after a factory fell and crashed into bangladesh, killing month are than 1100 people. speaking of bangladesh, tens of thousands of people forced to take shelter today as a cyclone struck near the southern coast. people packed into shelters, schools and government buildings as heavy rain and strong winds pounded remote fishing villages. so far, there have been 18

six people dead, up to 100 hurt, 250 people homeless in the town of !,mñgranbury, about 65 miles southwest of dallas. we also have new video of the hospital where a lot of those victims are being hospitalized recovering with injuries from minor scrapes to bone fractures. people are describing what they had to go through. >> a distraction from 1-10, it is probably a ten. there is nothing left over there hardly. >> hail. it was like hail. >> so terrifying for so many people. the same storm causing several other people in neighboring town ns north texas. one man says he was asleep when the roof was ripped right off the building. if this piece falls on top of me and this piece falls beside me, it was unreal.

over the next few days. pretty significant weather in the bay area. this is coming in from a storm system that originated near the gulf of alaska. it is also driving in some pretty cold air with t the cold is going to play more of a factor. it may not be raining where you live. you see where we are getting deeper pockets of green. that's where we have enough to get the highway nice and slick. mike and i have been tracking that for you all morning long. in addition to the slick conditions, more dangerous when you couple the winds that are picking up. i want to show you what's happening. we could slice the bay area in half. calm winds on the south bay area end. winds are whipping on the north side. our winds are going to pick up as we head throughout the next couple of hours as well. we are next down in the south bay. we stop the clock at 11:00 p.m. on thursday. that's when we are going to start to get a break overnight. the cool front starts to move out of here. as we head throughout tomorrow,

much, much less. we are looking to the eastshore freeway. we are going to get into much less traffic. that's the building for the slowing. the motorcycle around the toll plaza looks like it has cleared. the big deal right now, not the roads but the rails coming out of the east bay. police activity at the macarthur station, one of your oakland's stations. that has been upgraded from minor delays to major delays headed in all direction. there is police activity. we are tracking that. that is causing a delay. muni on the san francisco side. caltrans down the peninsula, that's moving smoothly. a live look at the freeway traffic as well for palo alto northbound as you are heading past willow activity a smooth drive southbound. the weather is no the a major factor just yet. christina has told you what's coming. we will track that for your morning commute. let's look at the maps. a nice northbound build. pretty typical, 680 up towards

the airport. slowing starts around capital expressway. all really building over the last 10 minutes. that is your pre7:00 burst that hits the northbound routes throughout the south bay. fremont, southbound 880 as it comes down into the area. this morning, the same stretch of roadway, close to the limit, in the upper 50s as you are passing by tesla and getting to mission boulevard. the map shows other concerns. the green painted over the road weather index gives you the possibility of wet roads, damp y drizzle, rain having hit all of these areas over the course of the morning. we do see a lot of traffic. you should slow it down. you will slow it down through livermore for highway 84. no major issues. the build for that commute today. down into union city, more traffic hitting as those clouds are drifting through. 6:51. we have an update to breaking

news for you where police now believe a weapon was used in the beating of a man found dead in the jack in the box parking lot on blossom hill road and snell overnight. that crime scene so complex this morning it will be hours before that area is reopened. "today in the bay's" marla tallez live at the scene with what she has just learned. marla. >> i wanted to start since the morning commute is picking up, just to mention that blossom hill and snell, the major intersection, it is open. no road closures. however, police have blocked off quite a bit of territory, access to several businesses on blossom hill, starting with the 76 station, which i'm sure you can't get a good look at. i can tell you what's there. we are going to pan over and show you the tape that is making its way down blossom hill to the chase bank here where police have set up their command center. police say a man was assaulted with some sort of a weapon and then left for dead behind this jack in the box on blossom hill. his body was found near the

dumpster, which happens to be right near the drive-through. police got the 911 call about 1:20 this morning. they have been out here ever since. more than five hours, going on their sixth hour. all they are saying about the victim, he is an adult male. as for who did this, police aren't identifying any suspects. we can tell you no one has been taken into custody. this means whoever did this is on the run. the coroner has yet to arrive out here, which is a good indication the body is behind the restaurant. it is a 24-hour jack in the box. it should be open at this hour. it is not. it is closed. i spoke to an employee. she says they are at the mercy of police. they cannot reopen until the homicide unit wraps up its investigation. it could be at least a couple more hours as they investigate the 16th homicide for san jose. thank you, marla.

also, in san jose, police are hoping clues found inside of a hotel room will lead them to another killer. a maid discovered a woman's body inside a room at the holiday inn express located on monterrey highway at 1:30 yesterday. the woman's name and age, not being released. investigators won't say whether she checked in alone or how long she had been staying at that hotel. a 1-year-old boy and his aunt are dead after being stabbed to death inside a san jose home. what makes the story even more heartbreaking, a family relative has been named a person of custody. christie smith, live at the scene. >> reporter: good morning tou. s within the last couple of minutes, sheriff deputies opened the street back up. crime scene investigators have been going in and out of the home, after a horrible triple

stabbing. two people dead including a 1-year-old baby. marshals and san francisco police detained a person of interest. they did not call him a suspect but really said, we have no other person of interest to speak of. about 3:30 yesterday afternoon, a man came home to a horrific scene. a 48-year-old woman and a 1-year-old boy dead, a 3-year-old girl hurt. all of them had been stabbed. it is believed that the woman was babysitting them and that all of the people here are related. the man who made the gruesome discovery, anastacio ramirez called police and his brother. >> translator: my brother told us to come fast, because we have a very big problem. he told us his wife was dead. >> reporter: victims are believed to be a niece, the woman -- ramirez pastor told =rc

th that he believes that he has a history of mental illness and was off his medication at the time. deputies had respondedtx to th address as recently as this week for a report of violence much the survivor, that 3-year-old girl, we are told, still in the hospital but in stable condition. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar is scheduled to be in court. he has yet to enter a plea on kidnapping and murder charges. this case has been delayed several times. most recently, because of technical problems with photo discs and interview video, which prosecutors gave to the defense team. sierra lamar, if you recall, disappeared in march of last year. garcia torres arrested two months later. so far, lamar's body has not been found. 6:56. a bay area youth pastor is out on bail accused of trying to pay for sex with a 14-year-old girl.

45-year-old samuel yoon was arrested during a prostitution scene in florida. he is a youth minister. he was in orlando attending a youth conference with a youth group. we contacted his church group. they have no comment. investigators say he responded to a post by an uncover detective that offered women for sex. 92 people were arrested during the four-day sting. most were from out of state. a special fund-raiser being held for the martinez boy injured in the boston marathon bombings. you remember him, young aaron hern went through several surgeries after one of the bombs went off a few minutes away. they will hold a concert to help raise money for aaron and his family. he was at the warriors playoff game getting a standing ovation. the show starts at 8:00 for this game and tickets are $15 per person. glad to see him on the road to
