"today in the bay." good friday morning. it is 4:30. i'm jon kelley. i'm laura garcia cannon. >> we begin with breaking news in east bay where the search is on for a gunman that opened fire killing two people. the shooting shut down all northbound lanes for several hours. >> that's where christie smith is and she has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the chp looking for the shooters this morning and so are oakland police after a horrible scene. drivers say they thought there was some sort of backup, lasted for ten minutes. then, they thought maybe there was a ped down on the freeway, because it looked like a man just laying down on interstate 880 near the jackson street on ramp. then, they realized that someone had been shot. the chp tells us two men were traveling in a white portia. they were shot late thursday around 10:35. the driver died in the car. that started with several 911 calls with both a collision and

a shooting. investigators weren't sure if this happened on the ramp or the freeway northbound. fre the freeway was closed for hours that the police and chp investigated. >> both agencies responded out. when we got on scene, we found one vehicle with one person dead inside. we found another person that was in the roadway we believe that was struck by passing vehicles. >> now, that passing vehicle, the driver of the second car stopped and cooperated with investigators but there was quite a bit of traffic, because the warriors game with the spurs had let out at oracle arena. so traffic was diverted to the fifth street ramp. those leaving the game were encouraged to take 98th avenue instead of the freeway. again, we are here at the oakland chp headquarters trying to get any description information about the suspects. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." rough morning and nighttime.

that 880 northbound. let's check in with mike inouye to find out what's happening. the folks that caught the tail end, 880 has reopened through oakland. we are looking at 880 coming from left to right, highway 17 at 280. a few head lights. the map will show the flow of traffic. i'm at the wrong set of maps. we're going to go back to the 280 screen. around parkmore, reports of an earlier crash. light volume of traffic. the overturned vehicle was blocking two lanes for about a half an hour. it has cleared up. traffic flows through the area. i will reset the maps and tell you what's going on on 880 in the south bay. it is much calmer weatherwise. >> friday morning. after all, you are going to hit

th weekend in hours and guess what? the weather is going to be right on your side this week. not too hot, not too cold. we will be done with these showers in a matter of a couple of hours. by mid-morning, you will see some sunshine. it is going to be a nice day. a little breezy as the storm system pulls out of the area. keep that in mind. if you drive a high-profile vehicle, we'll be taking a look at the weekend forecast. back to you for now. >> thank you very much, christina. it is 4:34. richmond police on the rund for t the person that shot and killed a grandmother. there is a small memorial for 64-year-old bonita todd. she was sitting inside when hit by gunfire. several other people were inside of the home, including her son, who was grazed. police think that son was the intended target. >> the information we have is that the son was the intended target. she, unfortunately, was the one that had to suffer.

>> her daughter was my best friend. they have help immediate and my husband through a lot of hard times. she didn't deserve this. >> police won't comment on a motive. they say they have little information on the suspects. >> the man accused of stabbing and killing his mother along with a 1-year-old nephew in their san jose home expected to face a judge today. >> ruben martinez being arraigned for murder and attempted murder attacks on wednesday. he is accused of stabbing and injuring his 3-year-old niece. she is in the hospital listed in stable condition. the sheriff's department has a mental illness and deputies had been called to that home before. a hospital is canceling surgeries in face of a strike. ucsf is canceling elective surgeries scheduled for next week. patient care and technical workers are threatening to strike next tuesday and wednesday. they are upset by a new pension

plan. ucsf says it will bring in temporary replacements. >> somebody else working very hard to steal bay area talent and businesses but this time, an entire country. canada's minister of citizenship in the bay area trying to convince some of the bay area's best and brightest minds to move north. his name, jason kenny. he is telling the news the american immigration system is dysfunctional but canada is open for business. they will get the canadian equivalent of a green card. he will be in san francisco and the silicon valley promoting canada's new visa for start-up entrepreneurs. the secretary of homeland security will be in the bay area to talk about immigration reform, how to make it easier for skilled immigrants to come

to america one of bay area's most unique and wackiest events happens this weekend, the bay to breaker's race. organizers say there will be tougher enforcement on the rules this year, clothing and bib numbers are mandatory. no alcohol on the course. this year, there is also an emphasis on security in a lot of the boston marathon bombings. police and bomb-sniffing dogs will be out in greater numbers. sunday's race starts at 7:00 a.m. an assault that led to the death of a runner after last year's bay to breaker's race has yet to be solved. steven martin died after being punched to the ground last year. he and his friends got into an argument over a cell phone. police say they are still reviewing photos of the group and are asking for the public's help in identifying possible suspects. >> it could be more news for the america's cup with another team dropping out.

the owner of the italian team holding a news conference. he has no plans to drop out of the race but his team may say otherwise. training runs have been canceled since the may 9th death of sailor andrew simpson. so four, all four teams still left in the race are still planning to stay in the race but the arrival of the italian team owner has some people wondering the best of the best in the cycling world are going to ride around the south bay. the world's type cyclists will compete in stage six of the amgen tour in san jose. making their way about 20 miles finishing with a difficult climb up metcalf road. this is a time-trial stage. tomorrow, the grueling 90-mile track from livermore up mt. diablo and it will wrap up with a final leg from san francisco to santa rosa. pretty nice weather.

tsarnaev. homeland security and investigations looking at the use of drones commercially and by law enforcement. among those slated to testify, witnesses from boston university. a mother taking matters into her own hands as her daughter was kidnapped. her 4-year-old was out playing in the front yard with a group of kids when the girl was smapped snapped up by a man. teenagers told her mom. she jumped in the car, on the phone calling police. just minutes later, she was face to face with the man that faced her daughter. >> it went really fast. i didn't expect him to turn in there. i tried to break. when i turned my wheel, i crashed. he threw his arms up at me. i got out and we were like standing face to face and i
