drivers last night. it shut down all northbound lanes for several hours just as thousands of people were leaving that warriors game. "today in the bay's" christie smith, joining us live from chp headquarters in oakland. she has all the latest details. kristy, good morning. >> good morning to you. the chp tells me they do have a number of witnesses that stopped and talked to them but they are still asking more people to come forward who witnessed this shooting. someone opened fire on a portia on interstate 880 late last night. the driver was killed right away in the car. the passenger shot, staggered out on to the northbound lanes of 880 where he was hit by one car, maybe more. the 911 call started coming to the chp around 10:30 last night. shots fired and a collision. oakland police also started getting calls about a possible argument near seventh and alice streets. both agencies responded. the freeways shut down northbound at jackson street on ramp with a horrible scene.

two men dead. the chp tells us it was such a brazen, bold shooting. they are still trying to piece together exactly how it went down and where. >> we do have shell casings and physical evidence on the on ramp here and on the freeway. so what we're trying to do is in a very meticulous manner, process this crime scene, collect all the physical evidence and try to determine exactly what transpired here. >> now, the driver or drivers who hit the man who staggered out of that car and on to the road stopped there cooperating with investigators this morning. this happened as the warriors, spurs, playoff game was letting out from oracle arena. there was quite a bit of traffic that had to be diverted off the freeway. people were stuck there as the investigation was going on. freetway finally opened up before 3:00 this morning. the chp was asked about the victims. they tell us they were just dressed in normal attire. they didn't have any warriors

gear on or paraphernalia. they had no indication they may have been attending the game at all. they tell me they are two african-american males in their mid-20's. they are still working on trying to get suspect information out to us. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:03. it was a chaotic night on campus. university police officer in the hospital this morning after being hurt during a confrontation with protesters at san francisco state. the spokeswoman for sf state says university police tried to remove several people from inside a campus dorm about 8:00 last night. officials say those people were not supposed to be even in the building. protesters resisted and at some point, a fire alarm was pulled and the dorm was evacuated. police say five people were arrested. at this point, it is still unclear exactly how the officer was hurt. we still don't know the extent of his or her injuries. police on the lookout for three suspects responsible for a violent home invasion robbery in the east bay. it happened at a home on

kitayama drive monday afternoon not far from alvarado niles road. they forced their way in the home, pushed an elderly woman down on the floor and pistol-whipped a young man. witnesses say the two men got away in a newer model silver car, possibly a bmw or an audi with tinted windows and chrome wheels a warning to people who walk along a trail in the south bay. a bat has tested positive for rabies. a hiker walking along the los gatos creek trail found a dead bat last month. they examined the bat's brain tissue which tested positive for the virus. it is often spread through the saliva of infected animals. health officials are asking anyone who may have come in contact with the bat to get tested. the virus in humans is extremely rare with no cases reported in

the history of santa clara county. redwood city police helping parents and kids learn how to stay safe. the police department hosting operation kid safe. that starts today at noon. parents can take their children to have their fingerprints added into i adigita digital system a their photographs taken. if a child goes missing, investigators have key pieces of information that could help them find them and find that child faster. now, the event goes on today and tomorrow at the honda dealership on el camino real in redwood city. votes are in later today. sf pride will announce the 2013 grand marshal for the pride parade. this will make bradley manning the grand martial. he is a gay soldier facing treason charges for releasing confidential military documents to wikileaks 5:05. as we get ready to roll into the

70 degrees in liver moore. giants are in town on monday for a pretty long home stretch. they'll be here next week. we want to give you a heads up if you want to head out there. weather will be nice for all those games next week as we have

a pretty nice pattern shaping up. as we head through the weekend, it will be warm. we'll stay warm on monday. we'll hold onto the 70s. spring like conditions tuesday, wednesday, thursday. temperatures just perfect for this time of year. right around average. we haven't had much of that. let's check that drive and see if it's average, mike. >> we'll settle for average. friday light. couple of spots to point out. looking at south bay northbound routes for the most part are fine. monterey highway picking up a little slow down. just a few more cars. no big issues reported there. though it's not recorded i see it, i know what's going on there. there's construction which took you down to about one lane north from 101 all the way up past brokaw and montague. paving expanding the roadway. those crews may be starting to move around. that may be the slow drive. that will be a slow drive heading up into nopedis in san jose. the traffic flowing northbound

"the palo alto weekly" is reporting that they're unfreezing seven positions. because of massive budget cuts due to the recession the traffic enforcement was disbanded last year. the traffic team will be returning this summer. cooler temperatures, lighter

winds have helped southern california gain some ground on the large wild fire burning in kern county. burning near los angeles near frazier park. firefighters say luckily winds blowing away from the fire -- are blowing away from homes near that area. look at the smoke out there. that fire is just 25% contained. you may want to get yourself a ticket or two. saturday's powerball drawing now up to a massive $550 million. that's the second highest total ever. a lot of that jackpot credit goes to the golden state. that's right. california has sold $83 million in powerball tickets since it just joined the game last month. guess what, that's helping fuel the fast growing jack pots and it's also having an unexpected benefit. the game was originally expected to generate about 50 million for california public education this year, but the state lottery director says schools are going to get ale lot more than

degree. it's taken a little while but this weekend he'll do her one better than that. graduating from u.c. berkeley with a master's degree in education. congratulations. thomas says he will be at the commencement to do the traditional walk across the stage. i'm sure a lot of people will be there to check that one out. speaking at commencement. apple co-founder steve waz any ak. he'll be addressing a crowd of 21,000 tomorrow at cal's municipal stadium. the waz is an alumni of u.c. berkeley. >> if you're out and about near christie field, you may catch a glimpse of very unique artwork. they're busy installing the artwork for the museum of modern art. it's closing for a two-year renovation. during that time it will display some of its collection across all of the bay area. in the first of those exhibitions the museum is displaying eight large steel

toll plaza. the approach not a big deal. down through berkeley coming out of the oakland congestion here which we expect to build. right now it's moving very smoothly from both east and westbound. south of west 80, it has cleared at the junction with 242. no concern there. we do have your build westbound highway. that's to be expected even on a friday, yes, even at 5:26. a crash over there off the bypass road that has cleared from the area. that's better news. back to you. we'll take it, mike. thank you very much. 5:26 right now. the chp opens a new rest stop on interstate 280 today honoring a fallen officer in san matteo county. dale krings was killed in duty in 1962. he was shot and killed by a man near a coffee shop. now 50 years after his death the chp naming a rest area on i-280 after officer krings. they're expected to attend a

following breaking news this morning. a shooting on 880 just riddles a porsch with bullets killing two people. we have the latest on that shooting. poaching our workers. the country that's trying to lure away some of our best tech workers and what it's promising that america can't seem to deliver on. >> and expect another fall like day for your friday. as we get into the weekend, it's a big weekend in the bay area, we have some major changes over the next 48 hours. we'll time that out for you coming up. you might be expecting friday light, but the build is

someone opened fire on a car killing two people inside. the freeway 880 shut down for hours northbound. the victim's car, a white porsche was hit on 880 on the jackson street on ramp. the driver died of gunshot wounds right there in the car. a passenger also shot actually staggered out of the car and on to incoming traffic and was hit by a car and killed. horrible scene. witnesses say they thought it was just a backup, a wreck or something until they started seeing people layed out on the freeway. 880 northbound shut down. chp and oakland police started investigating, frantic 911 calls started coming in about 10:30 for a collision and then five minutes later opd started getting calls. >> there was also a call received into the oakland police dispatch center of shots fired with an argument perhaps near 7th and alice street, which is not very far from here.

so both agencies responded out. when we got on scene we found one vehicle with one person dead inside. >> reporter: now investigators tell us there was some shell casings on the on ramp and the freeway. so they're still trying to sort out exactly how this went down. this happened as the warrior's first playoff game was letting out from oracle arena in oakland. big backups on the freeway. the chp tells us that the two men in their 20s were not wearing any warrior's gear so they don't have any reason to believe they were necessarily at the game. about 3:00 this morning the freeway opened back up. traffic moving again but, again, chp asking more witnesses to come forward as they piece this together and try to put out some suspect information for us. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." sad story here. richmond police on the hunt for the person who shot and killed a

grandmother. she simply sat in the front room of her apartment. this morning there's a small memorial for 64-year-old bonita todd outside that apartment on 20th street. police say wednesday night todd was just sitting inside when she was hit by gunfire. several other people were inside that home, including her son who was actually grazed. police, they think the son was the intended target. >> the information that we have is that the son was the intended target and she unfortunately was the one that had to suffer. >> her daughter is my best friend and helped me and my husband through a lot of hard times and she didn't deserve this. >> police are not commenting on a motive right now. they say they have little information on the suspects. the man accused of stabbing and killing his mother and 1-year-old nephew in their san jose home is expected to face a judge today. rubin ramirez is being arraigned on murder and attempted murder charges for attacks on wednesday. he's also accused of stabbing

and injuring his 3-year-old niece. she is in the hospital in stable condition this morning. santa clara county sheriff's department said ramirez has a mental illness and deputies have been called to the home before. san francisco hospital forced to cancel surgeries in the face of a strike. ucsf is one of the five centers canceling elective surgeries scheduled for next week. patient care and technical workers are threatening to strike next tuesday and wednesday. uc says workers are upset by a new pension plan that requires more employee contributions. if the workers do go on strike, uc says it will bring in temporary replacements to ensure patients already in the hospital do receive proper care. 5:34. just like texas governor rick perry, someone else working very hard to steal bay area talent and business. this time it's an entire country. canada's minister of citizenship in the bay area trying to convince some of the bay area's best and bst t move

as we head throughout the day today, upper 60s and low 70s. by sunday we will be in the mid to upper 80s. we have a major warmup headed our way as we take you through your hour-by-hour day forecast, it will be a cool fall like day and then we hit summer as we head through sunday. we have a lot to talk about. i want to take you through those changes plus so many events happening in the bay area. i've got your forecast for beta breakers, the amgen. the a's are coming up. let's check that drive. >> good morning. you have to get to work before you go through the weekend. we'll look at the commute with 101 building ahead. you're crossing under the 680/280 cler s interchange. the sun is coming up but use the headlights. we still have some slowing 101 from 880 all the way toward brokaw where they had overnight paving work going on and closing the on and off ramp at brokaw on the northbound side. that has crews on the move. we've seen the slowdown.

that should clear up over the next 20. i'll track that. the freeway is open. you're restricted to fewer lanes. we're looking at 84 down through livermore as you're coming onto the morning area. friday builds a little slower and later. we do see this burst of traffic coming out of the altamont. slowing down towards vasco. even over towards the isabelle interchange. the peninsula, 101, palo alto northbound with the headlights. 101 shopping center, smooth drive picking up the volume. no slow in palo alto, san matteo or san francisco. >> thank you very much. you know what, it was a tough loss for the sharks. they were actually up by a goal in the final minute of the game when it just fell apart. the kings scored two goals in less than 30 seconds to win the game 4-3. >> that makes it even more painful. >> i know. salt in the wound. l.a. takes 2-0 lead in the series. game three is tomorrow night. >> keep it positive. unfortunately the warriors didn't have it going last night.

welcome back, everyone. live look, emeryville. shot here, traffic starting to pull a little bit as the sun slowly crepes up on friday to help keep you energized, getting ready for the weekend. 5:41. google wrapping up its i.o. developer. one of the things it's not talking about is its glass. scott mcgrew is in the newsroom. scott, tech companies seem to love the idea. lawmakers, not so much. >> reporter: yeah, in this case, eight senators who sent a letter to google asking about the privacy implications of google glass asking ceo larry page

among other questions, if glass would use facial recognition and how a person would opt out of that. we know the answer which is, no, they don't have facial recognition. google just today got twitter working on google glass so facial recognition is a ways off. the questions are reasonable but they're very, very early. politicians tend to do this, sort of jump ahead. back in 2001 then san francisco supervisor chris daily tried to get segue scooters banned from san francisco because someone might run over pedestrians. he said he wanted to stop the segue slaughter. and state senator leyland yee said he doesn't think people should have 3-d printers without a license in case they want to print a gun. all of these things, i suppose, are possible but politicians do tend to get a little ahead of technology. we'll wait for google's answer. when we see it, we'll let you

"today in the bay" is live with a preview of the big race. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you john and laura. we're at what will soon be the starting line of the amgen tour. we're behind bailey after on 101. 12:45 this area will be packed with fans and of course riders. 128 riders from 16 teams, professional riders, in day six of what is going to be an eight stage race from southern california to northern california covering 750 miles. today they'll knock off another 20 miles. what would be a time trial leaving this area we're at

ending at the santa clara motorcycle park. over that time they will have some climbs. an elevation gain of around 2100 feet which if you compare it to the other stages is minimal, but it's definitely a time trial. riding fast given the fact it's only 20 miles. i say only 20 miles compare it to stage 7 which is tomorrow leaving at liver moore ending at mount diablo, that's a 90 mile leg. sunday is the finale. san francisco to santa rosa. 80 miles of elevation gain of 7600 feet. what makes this year's amgen tour different than in years pass, they started in santa rose is a, worked their way down to socal. this year they started in escondido and making their way north. a little bit of variation. if you're into cycling or would like to see athletes performing at the best, these are the best. you have world national

champions and you have psych lists who haveon stages of the tour de france in years past. you'll see the best of the best when it comes to cycling. again, 128 professional psycycls competing. 12:45 the start time at the ibm silicon valley lab. parking will be very limited so you will want to get here early. reporting live here in south san jose, bob riddell here "today in the bay." the tour hits san francisco on sunday. that's one of the big events in the city. there's also the beta breakers. there's going to be tougher enforcement on the rules this year. clothing and bib numbers are mandatory, not necessarily the banana suits, but there's also no alcohol on that course. they're going to be really watching it out there with such a big crowd. >> right. following the happenings in boston, they have to crack down and make sure it's safe. let's check in with mike to talk about the traffic mess that will happen.

>> aside from the distraction, we have banana suits, centipedes, a lot less outfits. compact city, 7 by 7 city. it will be cut off. it's bisected north south and south side. over here you start in the financial district. it takes you all the way through the city which of course has the accompanying road closures. that's why if you're traveling to the north and south, that's fine. if you travel through the issue you pass golden gate park, that is a problem. there's the finish line with the red icon there. now just at the starting line it starts to clear and we start to reopen some of the roadways. we don't have any complication. a lot of times this coastal route is a detour. around that time folks are going to start to arrive for the alcatraz shark swim. that will be an issue because that sends all of these folks that are heading out over at the embarkadaro. that cuts off some of the route

as folks are trying to get around as the beginning of the beta breakers clear from the eastern side of the city. that's a problem. if you're getting up towards the d tiburon wine festival, get over to the east bay side. travel up through berkeley. that's westbound 586. takes you across the san rafael bridge. that should keep you well clear of all of that activity in the city. of course, beautiful ride. you can take the bar trans into the city if you want. let's focus on our commute as the traffic flows through the city, not a problem. live shots crossing into the bay. san matteo bridge. no delays for 101 or the south bay. we'll look at the bay bridge. gentle build. spots around the bay, cloud cover in spots. it's going to be a little bit cool today, mike, and then the heat is on. speaking of alcatraz, taking a

live look at san francisco this morning. camera has a bit of a shake to it. winds are not that strong. they'll pick up as we head throughout the weekend. the showers that came through did us a little bit of good in the air quality department as well as the pollen department. your allergies won't be bothering you as much today. you'll notice the difference. you can see from the live picture here, yeah, looking good in san jose. you have a lot of sunshine. we are expecting the marine layer to push all the way in this morning. only over the course of the next couple hours. right now you're getting the most sunshine. it's cool to start in san jose. this is what we're talking about as we head through the weekend. cool front comes through. one day of cooler than average temperatures and then temperature soars as a big ridge of high pressure comes in. it will bring about a really warm weekend. lots happening here across the bay area this weekend. san francisco will be kind of hard to get around. they have the big uncorked wine festival happening at gir ra deli square. temperatures will be really, really comfortable. bring your sun screen. beta breakers sunday.

gun that fires real bullets. now that's led some politicians to wonder if there should be some registration of printers, some sort of government control. if you are old enough, you may recall there was a push to control the spread of copy machines when they were first invented. one place you can actually see 3-d printers in action is at maker fair at san mateo fairgrounds. saturday and sunday. this is one of my all time favorite things as you know. couple warnings though. the tickets to this are really expensive, about 30 bucks for adults if you buy them online. they'll be more expensive at the door. kids love this thing, but it is a zoo so absolutely plan to spend the whole day there. it's like going to disneyland. do not underestimate how complicated it's going to be to get into the san mateo fairgrounds, etc. i have a couple of plastic printed things for you. john, you have a car. >> right. looks like a mustang. >> yeah. absolutely. >> this was made by that
