>> the weather looks good. it's a little cool in some spots this morning. 50, san francisco, 50 san jose. we do have a sea breeze, southwest into fairfield. so on-shore winds will make things comfortably cool. as the tour heads up montobolo, we're looking at numbers in the mid-70s today. a bit breezy at times. we will see clouds coming in from the coast towards sunset tonight. notice temperatures here, nice and comfortable. warmer in the last couple of days. mid-80s possible in some spots tomorrow. we'll have a full look at those warming changing ahead in your weekend forecast coming up. >> all right, thank you very much, rob. and we are following breaking news out of east bay this morning. where hayward police are searching for a 3-year-old boy who vanished from his home last night. police say sunny lee was last

seen by his grandfather. the grandfather says he woke up in the middle of the night and he was gone. police say they conducted an extensive search but did not find the boy. the grandparents have full custody of the boy and authorities say sunny may be with his father, 29-year-old john lee. sunny is about 3 feet tall, 40 pounds and has shoulder length curly brown hair and hazel eyes. last he was seen, he was wearing a black shirt and black shorts. if you have any information on the boy's whereabouts, please contact the police department. hundreds of people are lining up for a chance to get free dental work. some even camped out last night to make sure they were near the front of the line when the clinic opened its doors just a few hours ago. patients are being seen on a first come first serve basis. no i.d. necessary. dentists, oral surgeons and high jennists are volunteering their time to perform services.

looking live here at the crowd that is gathering. no secret why. the california dental association estimates 30% of californians or 11 million people do not have dental insurance. those in line since last night say today is a day they've been waiting for. >> i know it's like, oh, teeth, wow, what a big deal. people don't understand, to people like us, it is a big deal. >> the free dental clinic continues through the weekend. from free dental work to free health screenings. the american society of hypertension is offering free hypertension screenings as well as glucose and cholesterol starting today. testing, i should say, not glucose. in san francisco, happening at the marriott on fourth street. high blood pressure affects 1 in 3 adults in the u.s. and is commonly referred to as the silent killer because so many people don't even know they have

it. hypertension can lead to stroke, heart attack, kidney damage and is a primary factor in about 350,000 deaths per year. the amgen tour of california is considered to be the premier cycling event in this country. and this morning, it will roll through parts of the east bay. it's day seven. in livermore. the best riders from around the world will make the 91-mile trek from morgan territory road to mount diabalo which has an elevation of more than 10,000 feet. yesterday, stage six took 113 cyclists through the south san jose climb up steep and winding metcalf road. tomorrow, a sprint from san francisco to santa rosa. cyclists are not the only ones in san francisco tomorrow. more than 100,000 people are expected to converge on the city for the 102nd bay to breakers race. it is still not too late to join the fun.

taken of the man. he's the one wearing bright green wig. he and his friends were dressed as troll dolls. investigators say they posed with another group of people wearing 49 jerseys and one of them punched martin during an altercation, causing him to fall, hit his head and lose consciousness. weeks later, martin died. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. turning now to the america's cup. a competitor is calling for big changes this morning in the wake of the deadly crash of the catamaran. the owner of one of the four teams competing for the cup flew to san francisco for a meeting with sailors and race organizer, yesterday. he is calling for several new safety measures. among those demands, he wants race organizers to reduce so call wind speed limits. that's the speed at which racers determine the winds are too strong to sail. many believe the man was coming

to town to withdraw his team from competition altogether. >> i am the boss of the team so i consider it absolutely normal for the boss to come when there is trouble. >> he says if organizers do not accept his demands, he may withdraw his team, even if the competition is already under way. the america's cup begins in july. oracle team usa is making changes in hopes of making its catamaran safer on the water. crews are replacing the yacht's massive black wind sail with a transparent film. the team says it will make it he'sier for sailors to find their way out if it crashes into the water. new this morning, a man is clinging to life. this happened around 5:45 last night when officers arivalled at

a home. after trying to negotiate with the man, officers say they heard gun shots from inside the home. officers shot back, hitting the man at least once. he was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition this morning. no oftficers were hurt in the shootout. we know the names of the two men who were killed in oakland on thursday night. they are 30-year-old christopher bearden of pittsburg and 28-year-old terrence marks of richmond. they were shot after the warriors playoff game witnesses told police the suspects may have left in a dark suv. police say they are reviewing high quality surveillance video. the san jose man accused of

killing two family members appeared in court for the first time. rubin ramirez was arraigned on murder and attempted murder yesterday for killing his 1-year-old nephew and 48-year-old mother and injuring his 3-year-old niece allegedly in a home on wednesday. if convicted, the 28-year-old could face the death penalty. still head on "today in the bay," a massive power ball jackpot. >> i got extra tickets. i'm hoping we have a winner. >> what would you do with $600 million? the power ball jackpot that has people lining up and the bay area store which is considered one of the luckiest in the state.

so how did you sleep last night? the national center on sleep disorder research says two out of five americans suffer from insomnia. we have sleep expert dr. mina shapiro with us this morning. so you probably disrupted your sleep to get here this early. we appreciate that. talk about, you know, what some of the problems are. i think, you know, you said you don't shut off. like we cannot shut off at the end of the night. >> that's right. about 40% of americans have a sleep problem. which is a lot of people. >> there's some cranky people out there. >> this is one of the reasons why i partnered with "got milk." to educate about the importance

of sleep. turning off is one of the first things we need to do. and then we can't be relaxed when we actually are trying to fall asleep, which is one of the reasons why we have trouble falling asleep. >> and you mentioned that nutrition is part of it. can we have a glass wine? some people say if i have a beer, it will help me sleep. >> wine and beer are okay but you really want to think about how you're going to relax yourself. wine and beer will not help you sleep better. milk is actually one of the greatest things that will help you sleep. it has protein, it has tryptophan which helps us relax. all those things are good for our body and also for our sleep. >> one thing we should probably omit, especially close to bedtime, sugar. >> sugar is not great. we have some sugar here. some lovely candy. we really want a healthier end of the day. so bananas with milk.

oatmeal with milk. healthy stuff before we go to bed. an hour or two before bedtime, give yourself -- turn often your electronics, have a healthy snack, that will help you tremendously. >> those of us who do -- we break up our sleep. sometimes we think we can sleep four hours here and four hours here. while we try to get in the rest of life. you say that may not translate. >> it doesn't really count if you say i'll get three hours sleep here and another three hours here. does that really make you have a six hour night. not really because you need to get those rem cycles in. those sleep cycles. dreams are so important. and you can't get to those dreams if you have two three-hour naps. it doesn't really count. so you really want to get a long stretch. seven or eight hours ideally. >> what's the minimum, seven? >> seven at the minimum. for kids, ten hours of sleep.

they were wrongly convicted, spending years behind bars for crime, they did not commit. one group in the south bay has made it their mission to help free those innocent men and women. "today in the bay" has the story of those behind those exonerations. not just the attorneys but the lawyers in training as well. >> reporter: evidence of shoddy police work and a lying witness. that's what led one group of students to the most recent exoneration of a local innocent

father and grandfather. >> so before we do that, first, let's talk about, what is a snitch? >> reporter: from santa clara university, a classroom full of law students to a distant world in oakland. and an emotional homecoming between mom and son. what do these two worlds have in common? the road to freedom. >> it feels great. man, it feels great. feel a whole lot of relief right now. that was a blessing. >> reporter: he was locked up for almost seven years for a shooting he has nothing to do with. >> being in a place like that for something you haven't done, it's ridiculous, you know. it take a lot out of you. >> reporter: and 45 miles away, this class known as the northern california innocence project has exonerated 17 men and women who were put in prison for crimes they didn't commit.

this man spent 14 years behind bars for an attempt eed rape he was innocent of. innocence project legal director linda starr says the program has given hundreds of students the chance to learn about the criminal justice system from the best teacher of all, experience. >> we have contributed to policy work and law reform in the areas of prosecutorial misconduct and eyewitness identification and compensation for exonorees. >> reporter: students conduct countless interviews and go on field trips to prisons. of course, that transcends classroom walls and teaches it takes a lot of hard work and patience. >> there's a lot of people in prison who are innocent and there's potentially nothing you can do. >> reporter: but ross made it out and months after he took his

first steps as a free man, he came face-to-face with students from the innocence project who work on cases just like his. >> i mean, if it weren't for them -- well, i would be still in there. >> reporter: they ask questions trying to learn more about that life. >> i know one day sooner or later. in the meantime, i just dealt with every day. >> reporter: for these students, the real credit comes with changing a life. for ross, that path leads back home and home is where his kids are. >> you know, it's going to be the great est moment of my life right now. >> reporter: we know current students are working on several active cases. there's word they could be close

attempting lewd acts with a m e miner. blair taught for about a year. police say blair thought he contacted a minor online and then showed up at a park to meet that person for some sort of sexual act but instead blair was met by a san jose police officer posing as a 13-year-old. >> the fact the suspect drove to the park, arrived at the park, was the act that was needed to fulfill -- that was a straight-up attempt, which is completely illegal. >> police have already interviewed about 35 student, at old or charrchard school to see there are other potential victims. a high school softball team in san jose has been hit by thieves twice in one month. this typime, thieves took their new p.a. system.

>> it is a condition which occurs when fluid in the brain builds up, putting pressure on the brain. it can be fatal if it is untreated. >> you lost your sir to this rare disease. >> yeah, my sister developed it when she was a baby and she passed away at the age of 26 in 2010. and she was a big swimmer. and that's actually how we know jessica. jessica and kate were on the swim team together. my claim to fame is i was an assistant coach when she was like 11 years old so i claim all the gold -- >> you're responsible for her going to the olympics. >> kate was always my competition. >> yeah, my sister -- >> she beat me all the time. >> yeah, she is a wonderful swimmer. we're trying to use the skills we honed to raise awareness and funs for research. >> if she was in her 20s, it's a condition you can live with. the problem is some of the

treatments, they haven't been modernized. >> yeah, exactly right. the treatment for it was developed in the 1950s. they've made some advances but they haven't moved towards a cure and there haven't been significant advances since then. the only treatments involve brain surgery. you have to remove part of your skull, root around in your brain to drain it. it's not ideal. people can live for a period of time but they always have in the back of their mind, is the device going to fail, could tomorrow be the day i need to be rushed to the hospital for another brain surgery. >> you have gathered up a number of influential people. how many folks are on team hydro? >> we've got about 75 people on the roster this year so we're excited to be swimming and trying to raise funds and awareness for research. >> jessica, you're used to swimming in a pool. how are you feeling? >> i'm nervous. i love the ocean but the san francisco bay area is a little cold for me.

but you noknow what, i'm happy be able to support this. they are great people. kate was just an amazing person. and an inspiration to me. so i'm really glad to be able to participate. >> you're going to be out there in the open water. >> i am, i am. inthoug i thought about doing it without. >> i can't say i blame you. how much money are you hoping to raise? >> the bare minimum we need to get is $65,000 because that will allow us to support a research grant in my sister's memory. the first year we swam, there was me, my brother and me two friends. we raised $10,000. and then it sort of builds every year. now we've got people like jessica swimming with us. so we've raised about $350,000 other the five years we've been doing it. so far this year, we're about halfway to our goal so we'd love to -- >> no pressure, the race is tomorrow. >> yeah, tomorrow, tomorrow

this morning, we have our special friend from pets in need. here with whitley who is ready for her new home. she is just so cute. >> she is totally cute. she is absolutely adorable. you can't tell it now, but she's very spurngy. she would be just a wonderful, very active little dog. she's 3 1/2 months old so she's still a baby. has lots to learn. but she's very bright. we're already walking well on a leash. she's trying to learn sit. >> this is very, very subtle behavior for a terrier. >> she's shining you on. >> if you want to find out more about whitley or the other pets in need, you can go to petsinne petsinneed.org.
