bay's" christie smith is live by that scene with an update on this ongoing investigation. good morning, christie. >> reporter: we just got an update from the detective that tells us this started at 10:37 p.m. on fordham street in east palo alto. they heard a number of shots going off, gunfire. when investigators arrived, they found a silver four-door car on this street inside. four people were shot. one person died. that is the 16-year-old driver. two others in the car, actually, they were shot as well. their injuries considered nonlife threatening. two young men walked up on foot and opened fire on the car. it is unclear if words were exchanged, unclear if this is gang-related or not but it happened very quickly. they are saying that there were a number of rounds, perhaps 20, perhaps more. not a lot of suspect information at this point. they will be on scene investigating for quite some

time. they are telling ugs all the victims are teenagers. again, the person deceased just 16 years old. so they tell me they are going to have fordham street blocked off for quite some time. that's the latest. as i get more information, i will ge it to you. christie smith, "today in the bay." also new, san francisco investigators looking into the cause of an overnight fire at a pier. it happened just before 10:30 at a commercial pier near third and 23rd street. a fire boat was called in to assist firefighters. the fire was put out in 40 minutes. the fire appears to be accidental and no one was hurt. >> firefighters near yosemite battling a small but devastating fire this morning. this one burning in mo dadera county just south of yosemite. about 40 other homes and buildings are threatened. so far, the 91-acre fire is 60%

contained. the cause of the fire does remain under investigation. firefighters continue trying to maintain the massive fire burning near frazer park in kern county. the so-called grand fire is about 85% contained. this started back on wednesday. so far, this fire has now burned more than 4300 acres it is 5:03. the former commander of the contra costa county drug task force will be sentenced today on a slew of drug charges. norman welch pleaded guilty to charges that he stole drugs from evidence lockers and sold them back on to the streets. he was caught on camara long with a private investigator, christopher butler, taking part in what appeared to be a drug deal. butler pleaded guilty in september and is serving an eight-year sentence. welch faces up to 17 years in prison. a man is in the hospital this morning after falling from the roof of a four-story apartment building in san francisco over the weekend. police say the 28-year-old man

was at a bay to breakers event afterparty yesterday when he fell over the edge of the roof and on to a sidewalk. several officers who were across the street saw the man fall and helped him until paramedics arrived. he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. that accident was just most serious of the event associated with the bay to breakers race. the race started with a moment of silence for the victims of the boston marathon bombing. once the race got started, the familiar, wacky, you know how they do it, about 30,000 runners participated and for the most part, they behaved themselves. police say they ended up arresting 23 people. most for public intoxication. a chp officer injured while working at the amgen tour of california is still in the hospital, said to be doing well. the officer was hurt in brentwood saturday afternoon while doing traffic control for the race. the officer was on a motorcycle just ahead of the pack of

cyclists when a car turned in front of him and they collided. the officer was taken to john muir hospital in walnut creek and is expected to make a full recovery. it is not yet clear whether the driver of the car will face charges. in the meantime, local leaders say the tour of california has been great for businesses along the way. the race finishes in santa rosa yesterday. they estimate the festivities brought in about $7 million to the local economy. this is the first time the race's eight-year history that cyclist has started in southern california and headed north. they ended here. this year's winner is an american, 33-year-old t.j. vangua vanguarden of the dmc racing team. this looks like yo-yo weather. sharp turns in the weather department. hold on tight. we will get to the traffic department check in a moment. mike, standing by. already busy on a monday

morning, which you probably don't want to hear. stand by. he is going to be here in a moment. calm conditions to start the day. fairfield has a north wind at 12 miles per hour. that's making for a very, very warm start to the day. you can see that on your contouring here where you are getting the yellow. temperatures in fairfield are close to 68 degrees. 58 in sonoma. 55 in san jose. 49 degrees in gilroy. we do have those down sloping warm, dry, northerly breeze. high pressure stands firm. just for one more day as we head through tomorrow. this things starts to break down and head east. for us, that means a major cooldown dropping by 15-20 degrees between today and tuesday. the last great beach day for the next seven. 75 in san francisco. 90 in gilroy. 90 in livermore and fairfield. as promised, our highway man. >> things are getting pretty busy. let me take you straight to our live look at sunol. we had the tail lights, the red

lights streaming around the bend. backed up quite a bit as we head over the hill. over the last few minutes, we have seen things start to move a little better. there is a crash still reported southbound 680 towards sheridan. we see the slowing on the maps. we have seen that go from orange back to yellow. even though chp doesn't get confirmed, it sounds like things are moving to the shoulder. we are still waiting for two flat bed trucks. showing some slowdown. it is a distraction. heading out of the area, the tri-valley, livermore valley, no major issues. had some early slowing around north livermore heading towards the way. that has sorted itself out and we are back to the morning commute. typical flow. a live look outside. we will end with this shot in oakland where traffic moves slowly. southbound, a lot of flashing lights. it looks like crews are picking up between fruitvale and the coliseum. the san mateo bridge, a smooth drive from 880 over to the peninsula. back to you.

17, speeds down to 16 miles per hour. traffic flow just fine. that's great news. we are looking over towards sunol, southbound 680 coming down through sunol. the earlier slowdown we had, the scene of an earlier crash, all the activity off to the shoulder. while there might be a slight dip in speed, you see our censors have smoothed out. a nice drive from sunol. the southbound side has recovered nicely. no problems right now. nothing to kick off the commute early for sunol. an early slowdown. this is south 880 heading down to 92. we don't see speeds coming down into the upper 50s until later on. no incidents reported off the castro valley "y" or through hayward. let's get a look at emeryville as folks are coming westbound 80 down towards the bay bridge. the toll plaza, very light back up in here. we have a smooth flow of traffic. an easy, easy drive here. southbound 101, curves to terra

linda. you are at the limit through novato, san rafael and back into the city. 5:18 right now. an update for you. sad news. remember the baby falcons that were born in san jose city hall. one of them was found dead over the weekend. the one-month-old bird apparently crashed into the side of the building on its way back to the nest. a passerby found the bird on the side and found part of a pigeon where he fell. they believe the falcon may have been in the process of taking a mid-air food delivery from its mother when it crashed into that wall. >> poor little thing. 5:19. a car crash in fremont knocked pour out to 3500 customers. it happened about 2:00 yesterday afternoon on alvarado boulevard. a car crashed into a power powell causing live wires to come down on the road starting small fires and knocking out electricity. emergency responders had to free

in dallas, texas, firefighters battling a six-alarm fire. they are still searching for a firefighter. not sure if the person is in there. so far, no injuries reported. however, this one could be, this is a condo complex. this one could be potentially deadly. it will take some time to figure that one out. we can tell you, one resident has been treated for smoke inhalation. we will continue following this one and bring you information as it comes into our newsroom. it is 5:23 right now. this rng month, michael phelps olympic comeback cob in thecomee works. he is planning to swim at the 2016 real olympics.

it happened near ford ham street and stevens avenue just east of university avenue. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live. she joins us with an update on the investigation. kristy? >> good morning to you, laura. right now, investigators are going through the victim's car which is right down the street. a white sedan. they are looking for evidence, much of it in the car and right outside the car. a number of bullet casings. they tell me two men opened fire on a number of young men sitting in that car. the driver, just 16 years old, was shot and killed at the scene. two others in the car shot too. they were able to run to a nearby home. their injuries considered nonlife threatening. this started around 10:57 p.m. when the spot shotter technology alerted to gunfire going off here at fordham street and stevens avenue. >> the investigation at this point has revealed the victims were sitting in the car. a total of four individuals in

the car when two males approached them on foot and opened fire on to the vehicle approximately 25 or so shots were fired. everyone wounded believed to be between 15-17 years old. they believe the driver may have lived in the area and that the two gunmen, again, both of them armed, they believe, possibly went to a gray or silver sedan when they took off. that's the latest from here reporting live in east palo alto. christie smith, "today in the bay." also new this morning, yahoo! just made it official, announcing it has purchased the blogging site tumbler for a cool $1 billion. let me say that again. $1 billion. this deal is all cash, scott mcgrew. the biggest purchase marissa myers has made so far. not yahoo!'s biggest. >> tumbler, big purchase. analysts hoping it gives yahoo!

in-roads with younger users. tumbler allows people to quickly create a blog. most are visual, lots of pictures. in a statement issued a short time ago, myers says yahoo! will leave tumbler out of new york city largely alone. in fact, she says, quote, we promise not to screw it up. tumbler, by the way, by all accounts, is a money-losing enterprise. this is a big win for that team. not only are they going to get a lot of money but money operating the site will not be an issue from here on out. not everybody is thrilled with the idea of an old-fashioned yahoo! trying to burnish its image by hanging out with the younger crowd. marla tallez joins us with that side of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is not the direction you are going to see protesters out here picketing in front of yahoo! headquarters but you absolutely will find them online. a whole lot of people unhappy with this. one tumbler user going as far as starting an online petition on

ipetitions.com. he begs people to sign this petition, stop yahoo! from buying tumbler. if this happens, the entire interface will be changed and millions of users will delete their accounts, me being one of them. please, please, please, sign this to stop this. so far, more than 167,000 people have signed it. the goal though is 5 million. from what i read, even if they do reach the 5 million mark, it is so unlikely this petition would actually stop the deal. ultimately, 5 million is a modest number considering tumbler reportedly reaches 134 million people worldwide with more than 100 million blogs on its site. on the tumbler site today, if you go online and do a quick search, you will find more unhappy users. here is a quick sample of what they are writing. one person writes, i swear, if yahoo! changes a thing about tumbler, i'm out. another person. yahoo! i don't want you to buy

my home and ruin it. another sample. omg! i really want yahoo! to buy tumbler said no one ever. you can definitely taste the sarcasm in that one. marissa mi marissa myer taking to her own tumbler page saying she is delighted to announce they have reached an agreement to acquire tumbler. we promise not to screw it up. her statement is pretty lengthy. we will delve more into that in my next report coming up. >> all this criticism, part of it comes from yahoo!'s past behavior with its acquisitions. it bought twitter and pretty much forgot about that company, leaving it to wither. it bought a company called go pole go and shut it down and even geocity yahoo! shut that down after paying $3 billion for that. this is a new era with yahoo!. i think you will see something different. >> a lot of attention. it will probably thrive.

setting off a brush fire in martinez. 48-year-old julie tenpenny, in jail this morning charged with arson and being under the influence of a controlled substance. neighbors in the area called police last night when they saw a woman up on a hill near alahambra avenue trying to set the dry brush on fire. they confronted tenpenny, when they say she became combative and struggled with an officer. the officer ended up hurting one of his legs. he is expected to be okay. that fire ended up burning about 15 acres up to the property line of some of those homes. it is 5:42. a new report of another significant problem on the bay bridge. this time, corrosion. sacramento bee is reporting back in 2006, caltrans discovered steel tendons in the skyway section of the bridge exposed to rainwater. they were starting to corrode. at the time, caltrans determined there was no problem. however, the bee claims they miscalculated the extent of that

spring out there in the heartland. parts of the midwest still picking up pieces this morning following a series of storms and tornadoes there. this is the damage left behind in wichita, kansas. people there say golf-ball sized hail started crashing down. the hail shattering windows, dented cars, even knocked off the side mirror roas from some the cars. a live picture from oklahoma. several others injured when a tornado ripped through a mobile home park in oklahoma city. devastation there. the severe weather has stretched from texas to minnesota. it has been so, so severe. >> not a lot left there. 5:50 right now. share ha sheriff deputies on the lookout for two people that gunned down and killed a ten-year-old girl as she was watching tv with her parents. the gunman walked up to the front door of the home saturday night firing at least a dozen shots through the door and window. the girl and her parents were both hit. the girl died at the hospital.

this has been a long-time coming. finally, ready for takeoff. the dreamliner resuming flight today for the very first time since safety concerns grounded that entire fleet back in january. batteries aboard the 787s failed in two separate incidents. causing a battery fire in boston and also an emergency landing over in japan. the cause of the failures still unclear at this point.

since then, boeing has made improvements to that battery system. we are going to have to wait locally until june for the very first dreamliner to resume its nonstop service from san jose international all the way over to tokyo. >> an oddity in this morning's announcement from yahoo! that it will buy tumbler. scott mcgrew and melissa mire had a very mysterious tweet. >> when myer made the statement that yahoo! would not make any changes. tumbler posted a statement with a really big swear word in the middle of it. when you make a billion dollars, there is a word you use and it is not yahoo!.
