breaking news on the peninsula. we have just spoken to detectives and learned new details about an overnight shooting in east palo alto that sadly killed a 16-year-old boy. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the scene right now with the information we have just learned. kristy, what are they telling you? >> reporter: good morning to you. a sergeant tells me the teenagers in the victim cars did not shoot back at all. it is sitting up on a tow truck. two young men on foot opened fire on this car. the car the victims were sitting in. a 16-year-old driver died at the scene. he was shot and killed. the victim, all four of them were sitting in. i counted at least 15 bullet holes in the side and the rear of this car. there were also bullet casings all over the ground. a second car in a driveway right near this one also hit by

gunfire, the back window was hit and side windows shattered about 10:57 p.m. what they are telling me is that the technology alerted there was gunfire going off, rapid gunfire on ford hham street and found three teens had been shot. a fourth teen was in the car but was uninjured. the investigation at this point has revealed that the victims were sitting in the car. a total of four individuals in the car when two possibly hispanic males approached them on foot and opened fire on to the vehicle. approximately 25 or so shots were fired. >> now, two of the teens that were injured actually ran to the home of the driver who lives around here. two shooters again, as you mentioned, possibly hispanic males, ran to a gray or silver sedan and got away. we asked the detective on scene

if this might be drug or gang-related. he said at this point, it is just too early to say. reporting live in east palo alto, christie smith, "today in the bay." at 6:03, we are now getting our look at the woman accused of using a lighter to spark a fire that ripped through a hillside in martinez. 48-year-old julie ten penny was under the influence and injured an officer in the leg while she was being arrested. the fire burned about 15 acres of dry brush right up to the property line of some of the homes near alhambra avenue in alhambra drive on sunday. the firefighters were able to keep back the flames before any of the homes were damaged. a motive is unclear. crews now mopping up an overnight brush fire in oakland hills. this is as close as police would actually let us get to those flames which started about 2:00 this morning near skyline boulevard and redwood road in oakland. firefighters say the flames

reached nearby trees but they were able to keep them from spreading any further. that is the good news. so far, no buildings were damaged and nobody was hurt. >> an update to breaking news where a firefighter may be trapped inside a burning condo complex. the massive six-alarm fire is keeping crews from searching inside the building for the firefighter and anyone else who may be trapped. our nbc station in dallas tells us the missing firefighter used his radio to say he was trapped inside and did not know where he was. then, it just cut out. at least 24 condo units are now destroyed. embers from the flames have been reported landing on town homes behind that complex. we have new video just into our newsroom showing the aftermath of a series of tornadoes that touched down in the heartland sunday. this is a look at a home right now, just tote little demolished. that is in s shawn killinger j 9 knee, oklahoma.

good morning in san francisco. 54 in beautiful san jose. we are looking good throughout the silicon valley. 52 in sunnyvale. by noon, we will round out the day in the low 90s. 80 degrees bayside and 75 degrees at the coast. stick around if you want to see how cool it is going to be in your cities. we progress throughout the week. first, want to check on your drive at 6:06. that's getting busy. at the bay bridge toll plaza, it is 6:06. that means the metering lights are turned on just about now. the backup filling in toward the 880 overcrossing. you see we still have movement for the fast-track lanes and in the approach toward downtown, north 880 also shows a stall showing up for north 29th. watch that at the off ramp. so far, not enough to show off on our censors here. we are looking at the eastshore freeway as well. starting shows some build for west 580 approaching the maze. still, gradual build for many of your typical spots. north =+a680, approach williin

junior varsity water polo team. yang will be arraigned on nine felony counts of sexual'4?ñ acty with a minor. if convicted, he could face up to eight years in prison. >> some sad news. one of the baby falcons born on top of san jose city hall was found dead unfortunately this weekend. the bird crashed right into the side of the building on its way back to its nest. a person passing by found that bird dead on the sidewalk there yesterday morning. bird experts telling us they found part of a pudge yigeon th right where the falcon fell. he may have been in process of taking a mid-air food delivery from its mother when it crashed into the wall and fell from the sidewalk. it is 6:08. much more ahead on the bay. someone in the south bay waking up $2 million richer. we are going toll you which

nobody has come forward tolaim the prize yet. they do have 180 days to redeem that ticket. this is one of two second place tickets sold in california. the other one in cern county. both picked 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 but they did not pick the powerball number, which is 11. as you mentioned, someone in florida did correctly match all six to one that $590 million jackpot. one of the largest ever purchased at a publix grocery store in zephyrhills, florida, which if you are not familiar is 20-30 miles outside tampa. >> i hope somebody won it that really deserves it. >> i think it is great. that's a lot of money. that's a lot, an awful lot of money. >> god bless them, honestly. god bless them. the best wishes for them. they got lucky. >> reporter: if you are one of those people here in the bay

maybe some stray showers, courtesy of a thick, onshore flow up in the north bay. i am thinking sonoma county, the northernmost portion as we head into the upcoming weekend. overall, a warm day today and the weather just around the corner. i want to take a look at your drive with mike inouye. >> hey, folks, let's get a look, a live look through fremont where we showed a very light volume of traffic. over the last ten minutes, i was watching. there has indeed been an increase. this is what we expect to see now, south 880 coming toward me. past the truck scales in tesla and that side of the roadway and the sign for fremont auto mall. a smoother build. we will show you the map. that light volume off'ú traffic concerned me a bit. there is some slowing headed down toward dakota. a typical build through union city and fremont. the south bay looking really light right now. it is 6:18. we are not really seeing that slowdown we expect to see for 101 north of 680. we are seeing a build for 280. that's a little early to see

this stretch from 87 up into cupertino with spots where speeds are coming down into the upper 50s. that's a little slower than we typically see. north 87, we have seen this hit early. it kind of cleared up. now, it is sticking around. speeds coming down into the 50s north from capital expressway past kurtner. 87 starting an early slowdown as well. concerns for the south bay as well, for sure. heading into downtown. overhere, we had your slowing toward the dublin interchange. there was a focus of traffic as you are heading west. there is debris reported there. farther over, we see a lot of)) slowing headed toward the north. it looks like it is starting to smooth itself out. that was an early focus right here at north first. things did again start to move toward their normal for that westbound commute. here, west 80 down through the eastshore freeway. no real problems. a smooth route to the bay bridge toll plaza where you have your backup coming up the incline. let me show you the live look from our camera pointed out

closing arguments expected today over the new york police department's controversial stop and frisk policy. the federal class action lawsuit claims the policy encourages racial profiling and it also allows police to make thousands of stops, often without a reasonable suspicion. the police and the move, the policy was implemented by police after former police, bill bratton, who is now hired as a consultant for oakland a bill could be passed in the senate judiciary committee, written by the gang of eight senators, would take eight steps to secure the border and offer citizenship to millions. today, the two unions that represents 20,000 employees in the department of homeland security will publicly oppose the bill. they have to reserve a few disputes. still, months away. we can tell you already the 2014 winter games in soshi, russia,

"today in the bay's" marla tallez is live at yahoo!. the headquarters in sunnyvale. we will start off with business and tech reporter, scott mcgrew, live in our studio. this one, nothing short of a bold move, one yahoo! promises not to botch.

>> we won't screw it up are the exact words that yahoo! ceo, marissa myer used this morning twice. they have tripped up over some of their acquisitions, most notably, geo city after paying $3 billion for that. last week, they bought a small company called go pole go and shut it down immediately. the best way to stop the iranian nuclear program would be to have yahoo! buy it and shut it down. a joke.0l yahoo! will not be shutting down tumbler, they promise. they are promising to leave the company largely alone. that is not stopping some tumbler users from objecting. to sign this petition saying if they buy tumbler, the entire interface has been changed and millions of users will delete their account. 167,000 people have signed it. the goal is 5 million. they certainly have a long way to go. even if they do reach that 5 million mark, the petition seems to be more symbolic than anything else. on the tumbler site itself, you will find plenty more unhappy users writing things like, no, please, not yahoo!. keep tumbler free. also, i think it is too late to stop the deal but it is not too late to show how much we hate it. the ceotqñ of tumbler himself, will remain ceo says, we are not turning purple. our head quarter ises not moving. our team isn't changing. our road map isn't changing. our mission isn't changing. what's new? simply,atg tumbler gets better faster. ruseers are just going to wait

firefighter and anybody else that may be trapped inside. our nbc station down in dallas telling us that missing firefighter used his radio to say he was trapped inside and didn't know where he was. we can tell you at least 24 units are now destroyed as this search continues an elderly man is dead. at least 21 people hurt after a series of tornadoes ripped through iowa, kansas and oklahoma. the worst of the damage appears to be at a mobile home park about 35 miles southeast of oklahoma city where the body of a 79-year-old man was found out in the open sunday afternoon. a state of emergency is now in place in 16 oklahoma counties. happening right now, that morning commute. benefit expected for 30,000 commuters in southwest connecticut as crews there rebuild 2000 feet of track damage by a train collision. several days around the clock of work, there will be needed to inspect and test that rail line now that the damaged railcars

heartbroken. christi, what is he saying? very distraught. he has no idea why anyone would want to shoot at his 16-year-old son or his friend. it was around 11:00 last night and7é heard gunfire out in front of the home. the home just down the street on this block here. then, he says that two of the friends actually ran into the house. they had been shot and wounded. dad says he ran outside to check on his son. he knew right away that his son was already dead, that he had been shot in the head and the

it actually wasn't here but he was thinking it was possibly, possibly a case of mistaken identity. reporting live in east palo alto, christie smith, "today in the bay." new this morning, we are getting our very first look at the woman accused of using a lighter to spark a fire that rip tl ed through a hillside in martinez. 40-year-old julie ten penny was under the influence and injured an officer in the leg while she was being arrested. that fire burned about 15 acres of dry brush up to the property line of some of the homes there near alhambra avenue and alhambra drive. they were able to keep the flames back before any homes were damaged. at this hour, a motive is unclear. crews mopping up an overnight brush fire. the fire started around 2:00 near skyline and redwood in oakland. the flames reached nearby trees but they were able to keep them from spreading any further. no buildings were damaged.

cyclists when a car turned right in front of him and they collided. you can see the smash up there. that officer was taken to john g we are happy to ifss(ort, he is> expected to make a full recovery. not yet clear whether the driver of cart will be facing kñ charg. sheriff activities in sacramento county on the lookout for two people that gunned down a ten-year-old girl as she was watching tv with her parents. the gunman walked up to the front door and fired at lease the a dozen shots through the front door and window. girl and her parents were hit. that little girl died at the hospital. her parents are still being treated. her 14-year-old brother was in another room and was not hurt. police think the shooting is gang-related. another family member not living in the home has ties to the gang. it is 6:53 right now. a new criminal investigation being launched into the nevada psychiatric hospital accused of dumping hundreds of patients here in california.

reporting the los angeles city attorney investigating a hospital in las vegas. that hospital stands accused of dumping more than 1500 patients in cities all across the u.s. over the past five years, many of them right here in california. san francisco's city attorney and the federal government are also looking into these allegations. 6:54. a former narcotics commander will be sentenced in a plot to steal drugs from evidence lockers and sell them back on to the streets. norman welch pleaded guilty to those charges last year. welsh could face up to 17 1/2 years in federal prison. also, in court today, an accused serial car thief wanted in six counties. james rolston uses the name dem me tri storm. he has pleaded not guilty to charges. he was arrested in berkeley earlier this month.

a new report of another significant problem on the bay bridge. this time, corrosion. a sacramento bee reports thousands of steel tendons used to strengthen the skyway portion of the new eastern span exposed to rainfall in 2006 leading to rust and corrosion concerns. caltrans decided at the time it wasn't a serious problem. the agency still stands by that decision. some experts now question whether the corrosion could make parts of the skyway unstable after a major earthquake. it is 6:55. right now, some huge news from silicon valley. yahoo! ceo making a bit of a mantra. this is what she says. >> she says we won't screw it up. >> she is talking aboute/+ yahos $1 billion purchase of tumbler. the deal was made official this morning. scoín;zcgrew, you count four times she said it now. >> i won't screw it up, i won't screw it up. she said it once on twitter,
