we're back on this monday with more of "today." one of the biggest concerns for teenagers. >> texting and driving. >> 16% of girls use a cell phone while behind the wheel and more than hoff half of those girls are texting and e-mailing and one of them could be your daughter. >> amanda clear knows about this too well. she survived an awful accident. while texting and driving. amy ashley is the editor in chief of "teen vogue" magazine which covers this topic. including amanda's story. >> so happy you're here to tell your story. a bit of a miracle. >> something like that. >> that was a brutal, brutal crash. >> we want to warn everybody,

hoda. because some of the images we're going to see can be pretty upsetting. >> pretty graphic. >> you were driving. and you were on your phone, you're not sure if it was the exact point of impact. but you did have your phone going. explain what you remember of what happened to you that day. >> well, i was stationed at mcguire air force base in new jersey. i'm an air force veteran. and i was going to see friends that lived in virginia. >> about five hours away. >> yeah. about. so i was going to see them. and it was a long trip. you know, and you're by yourself. so you're trying to keep yourself entertained. and you've got the cell phone going. and with texting, updating facebook, talking on the phone. you have not only that, but the gps. and -- >> right. there's a lot of -- >> radio. >> all of those things. you know, there's a number of distractions happening. and it always happens so fast. i mean, i can't remember which one of those things i was doing specifically at the point of impact. >> but you said it was pretty much all of those things during the course of that drive. >> you ran into another car, right? >> right. i hit the back end of a tractor-trailer that had a forklift on the back of it. >> terrible crash.

>> tell us what happened then. >> look at her car. >> dear god, how you survived is nothing short of miraculous. >> wow. you were in a coma for a while? >> i was in a coma. >> they induced it. >> it was a medically induced coma. i was in that for about a week. >> i can't believe you came out of that. >> oh, lord. >> you lost your right eye. >> uh-huh. >> and amy, when you -- this story is obviously a very dramatic portion of the story. but this is something that's happening, you found, with a lot of young girls especially. >> well, yeah. i mean, "teen vogue" has partnered with toyota to raise awareness of the scourge of distracted driving. and it's not just a teen problem. it's everybody's problem. and grown-ups are doing it, too. one of the most incredible things i learned from our toyota research is that parents have so much impact on their children's behavior. and we think parents are ignoring us. but actually, we're modeling for them. what we've done is started a campaign called arrive in style. we asked mothers and daughters to go on our website, to sign a pledge they will not drive with distractions, which is a big deal to commit to.

and i think that if mothers and daughters can do this together they'll have great influence like drunk driving. >> it's such a part of the culture now. i was waiting for an important call yesterday and i was on the way to pick up cody for something and my phone rings. and you have to fight the urge. you find a safe place to pull off and you answer it. most things are not so urgent that you can't -- can't put them on -- you know, on hold for ten seconds to find a safe place to be. >> and that's the message. with kids they've grown up with these cell phones attached to their hands. amanda's talked about it. all kids have talked about it. they feel it's rude not to respond. >> what about hands-free? >> the research shows that you're still distracted. it's better to put the phone away. turn it off. there are great apps you can download. you can find them on teenvogue.com. that will answer your phone for you. >> sometimes in cars even there's like -- the radio in the car is now -- there's like a panel. so everything you have to push -- >> you've got to find the right thing to push. >> and everything's electronic

>> yes, do this shrimps. help me with this guy here. >> is it shrimp or shrimps? what's the plural? >> i don't know. >> say it like you're sure. >> here we go. a little bit of olive oil. a little bit of chili flake, which i love. a little bit of chopped garlic. and add a little bit of vinegar. and we put the top on and pulse it. i want to give you a trick to making great emulsions like for instance this guy right here. when making a nice green pesto or chimmichurri. put a tad bit of vitamin c in there with a microplane and it keeps it green for four or five days. >> liquid vitamin c? >> no, not liquid. like you have what you eat -- you microplane it. >> what's that do? >> it makes it nice and green and vibrant like you have here for five days. >> throw them on the grill. >> we grill the prawns like this. and you can skewer them really quick. >> shrimp is single, but it's prawns if it's plural. >> prawn. >> all right. so what i did here is i took some watermelon, which is real

a little bit of sugar. hi, sara. >> she always shows up when it's food. >> i know. >> you want some more? >> so what we did is we take these, you skewer them, you grill them and the fun thing about water melson there's great sugar in there but i add a little bit more and you take the same chimichurri. look how the smoke is going totally toward the beauty on both sides. not me at all. you can grill the prawns the day of and the watermelon the day of. and you take the chimmichurri. it's universal you can put it on either one. >> all right. you want a little something after your meal? how about this? we have the legendary paul anka. >> unbelievable book. and he has a new cd out. it's the duets album. he's the legendary one right after this.

being that guy to then going the other direction. i love the story of you with the beatles in europe before they hit here. he had a big part of the beatles coming here. because you went to a certain person and they called a guy -- >> correct. >> all of those machinations going on. >> i was working in paris at the time. i used to hang in europe all the time from age 17 to 18. and we weren't in a media-driven society, as i said. so nobody knew what was going on anywhere in the world. i'm in paris and i see this new group called the beatles. i'm in london and i meet them. and we're talking. and i would come home to my agents, normie weiss at general artists. and i would say normie, there's this group and they're the beatles and they got hair and they got this. he says what are you talking about? and i said you got to see these guys, they're unbelievable. nobody listened. and ultimately, he got on a plane and went over and signed them and got them over in '64. >> wow. >> but nobody was aware -- you know, today i've always used the analogy if cnn were around back in the '40s hitler would never have left germany. you know. >> you almost put yourself out of work, excuse me, hoda, with

doing that because then the british invasion happened and you were suddenly not the cool guy. >> absolutely. and that's okay. you know why? what happened was, we were not embraced. all of these teen idols, we were very specific to fans. >> right. >> and madison avenue, we were not embraced in totality by everyone. when the beatles hit, that whole window opened for the music industry. and it went to another level. and you realized that you needed that evolution for the business to get better. and that's why i went back to my writing and kept writing, "tonight show" theme, "longest day." i felt it's over and i need to do something else. >> and michael buble was someone who you spotted, a fellow canadian. he's got the chops. >> well, david foster, my buddy, brought him to me. he sat down and produced the first album. michael's going to last a long time. >> well week, excited about your book. >> it's fascinating. terrific. whether you love the music industry or a great success story. or just a story of a great guy through the decades. thank you, paul. >> thank you. >> tomorrow our guys tell-all panel answer your burning questions about the men in your life.
