good morning. thanks for being with us. it is 4:31. i'm marla tallez in for jon kelley. i'm laura garcia-cannon. good friday morning, laura and marla. it is going to be a pretty comfortable start to the day. a little chilly out there. probably want to grab a light coat. what i can tell you right now is, we have rain in the forecast. it looks like it is going to come through over the course of your memorial day holiday. now, it really depends on where you live as to whether or not you are going to see these showers. we really want to bring that forecast to you. stick around. 4:31. check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. overnight road work is often the only issue going on as it is now. we will show you where it might be more of an issue if your traveling south through fremont. light traffic flow. the map will show you as you head down toward mission in the southbound direction, 680 and

880 move smoothly. it is 880 farther south passing 237. down to one lane of traffic before you get to montague down past brook toward 110. the speed censors are registering a pretty clear view. most of the lanes will clear of anything. we should have lanes reopening about 5:30. it is a typical schedule. we'll track that. be advised, you are going slowly down towards 110 because of the construction. the rest of the south bay looking pretty good. we will track it for your friday. back to you. we start with breaking news. a palo alto man is under arrest accused of brutally murdering a family of four halfway across the world. 20-year-old kevin dahlgren was arrested near washington, d.c. late last night. authorities released this photo taken from his facebook page. police in the czech republic say he fled the country after firefighters found the bodies of a family burning inside of a home in the city of bruno.

dahlgren was reportedly related to the family and had been staying with them for just three weeks. czech authorities want him extradited back to the czech republic to stand trial. dozens of aftershocks rattling northern california throughout the night following a magnitude 5.7 quake. take a look at this surveillance video from a grocery store in greenville, which is in plymouth county near the epicenter of the earthquake. you can see things start to fall off the shelves when the quake hit. some of the flights start to flicker. the quake struck just outside greenville. it was felt more than 100 miles away. that's because of the region's geography. >> what's interesting is how far south you felt it. you have a lot of sediments, very flat, everybody knows that. those kind of rocks, flat deposited rocks that are shed down from the surrounding hillsides amplify ground

motions. >> we haven't received any reports of serious damage. but, one woman in sacramento was injured. she reportedly fell down some stairs when the quake hit. new this morning, far, far away, a powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the far east coast of russia today. the quake was centered in the sea of okutz, which is east of russia and north of japan. tremors lasted for five minutes after the quake and were felt 4500 miles away in moscow. many people ran out of buildings and many schools were evacuated. a tsunami warning was issued for the surrounding areas but weigh lifted a short time later. it is 4:34. officials in washington state trying to figure out what caused part of a bridge to collapse and cars plunging into a river below. authorities say it is a miracle no one was killed when a section of the i-5 bridge in mt. vernon came crashing down around 7:00 last night. rescue crews pulled three people

from the chilly waters. they are roux ecovering in the hospital this morning. a rescue worker hit the big bridge at some point before the collapse. the brinl dge is a main thoroughfare from mount nt. ver. it runs over the river. both areas are expected to remain shut down as authorities continue their investigation. the bridge was built in 1955 and is considered functionally obsolete, meaning the bridge design is certainly outdated. bridge failures in the past 50 years or so have been relatively rare. engineers say unless states do more to address concerns, the situation could get dire fast. new this morning, london's he thr heathrow airport temporarily shut down their runways after a british airways plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

this sunday. regular services start on june 1st. that includes a flight between san jose and japan. the new high-tech jet was grounded back in january for smoldering batteries. a&a says they have modified all 17 of through dreamliners and conducted 170 proving flights. united airlines resumed its use of the aircraft on monday 4:47. a grandmother who kidnapped her granddaughter from the bay area is set to be sentenced today. court documents show she broke into her son's home in knitson would years ago and took her baby granddaughter. she took a can b to her home in southern california where she was arrested. in court, a preliminary hearing begins for an alleged serial car thief wanted in six bay area counties. dmitry storm has plead not guilty. he was arrested in berkeley earlier this month after running

from police officers. students at a bay area high school dealing with the loss of one of their piers. a los lomas high school student died tuesday after suffering a brain hemorrhage at a local gym last week. the 18-year-old attended the high school for a year and a half after moving to the united states. he was in the english learner program and known for his wrestling skills. he is survived by two younger brothers and his parents. the high school is collecting funds for that family. it is going to be a long weekend in oklahoma as neighbors in the path of the deadly tornado continue to clear debris. but, in the midst of all the heartbreak, there are some signs of hope. nbc bay area's sarah dolif is in moore, oklahoma, with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, residents waking up to a difficult day with more funerals planned including those of two young children killed at plaza towers elementary. instead of days filled with

barbecues this memorial day weekend, there will be more cleanup. and more heartache. thursday, mourners buried the first of seven students, 9-year-old antonio candelaria, killed at plaza towers elementary school. for those who survived, gratitude for the teachers and staff that put themselves at risk protecting children. >> i am never going to have anything, any words to repay her for what she did. she threw herself on my daughter to protect her. >> students from plaza towers as well as the second damaged school, briarwood elementary gathered thursday for a final assembly and a chance at closure. >> it makes me glad to see my friends and that they are alive and i'm alive and i'm okay. >> president obama is scheduled to visit the ravaged community sunday. he plans to tour the 17-mile path of destroyed homes and

businesses and meet with the first responders who have provided everything from muscle to food for shell-shocked survivors. >> they need help. they need hot meals. they need comfort. barbecue is good comfort food. >> heavy rain and thunderstorms continue to slow cleanup efforts with more bad weather expected today. it will take months of hard and emotional work to rebuild what the tornado destroyed in 40 minutes, a task the residents of moore say they are dedicated to seeing through. new estimates put the number of destroyed homes at 12,000. in moore, oklahoma, i'm sarah dalif, nbc news. hernandez who was there saying it is a whole different perspective to see that in person. can't imagine. it is 4:50. coming up, tug of war over a - 30-year-old work of art. what the artist has to say about the plan to get rid of her creation.

three-story piece of art that's been hanging in the embarcadero station for more than three decades. the agency says it will cost $50,000 to clean the piece called legs and $300,000 to remove it all together. it was put in place in 1978 as now blackened with dirt. the artist, who was 83 years old, now says she wants to be included in whatever decision b.a.r.t. makes. >> i'm not sure but i think b.a.r.t. should at least get in touch with me when they do anything to the piece. i need to be included in their decisions. >> b.a.r.t. and the artist plan to meet at some point to talk about options. legs took a year to create and she used 8,000 pounds of rope to make it. >> look at how it has turned all that smut down there really. >> a big lasso. you are seeing there is already some slowing. >> not even 5:00.

4:54. we are looking toward our live camera and we see traffic flowing northbound. it is moving smoothly. we had some slowing on our maps. we will see how it shakes out. over the last few, i saw a lot of slowing on the transition. the map is laid out the way it was on our live shot. south 880 coming down towards 880. still some slowing. slowing northbound on 17 coming up towards 280. it looks like all transitions are now open there. some more slowing showed up over the last ten. here is south 880 between 237 and 101. folks were down to one lane. kind of waiting for the pavement to cure. now, it looks like they may have moved some of the crews i saw over the last ten and now it is back up at speed in the southbound direction. we expect a little slowdown as you do lose a couple lanes headed down towards 101. we are looking towards oakland with northbound traffic flowing
