bouncing back and we have made our way here for the official reopening today, friday 24th, 2013. >> from nbc news this is a special edition of "today." live from the jersey shore. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on friday morning. look at the scene in seaside heights, new jersey, along the boardwalk with a little liquid sunshine in the air as we bring you day five of the "today" show's great american adventure. what an adventure this week has been. >> good morning. it is fitting to be here on the shore seven months after sandy. we saw what happened in oklahoma.

this is a sign of how a community can really bounce back. we remember the iconic image of the roller coaster partially submerged and knocked over and the people here are ready for memorial day weekend and ready to cut the ribbon on summer. >> the ribbon just rolled out next to us on the beach. the pickup truck unfurled a five-mile long ribbon that will be cut with the help of new jersey governor chris christie who will join us live during the show and he will have the official ceremony and we will talk to him about the recovery and the challenges ahead. >> we have -- when you think of governor chris christie you think fun. we have a concert from the great group fun. they will be rocking this shore. >> they wrote a lot of their hit songs here at the jersey shore. appropriately enough they will be here. and everybody is so excite about them and their performance and we are excited to be here. we begin with some breaking news out of seattle.

a bridge collapsed north of seattle. let's get to chris daniels from king 5 with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this is the major freeway in washington state. it's now disconnected. you can see the wreckage and the vehicles still behind me in the river after officials here say a truck smacked in to a part of the span. it was just after 7 p.m. when a major portion of the 57-year-old river bridge fell this below. they believe a truck may have triggered the collapse that sent the vehicles plunging in to the water. >> for a reason unknown at this point in time a semi truck struck the bridge causing it to collapse. >> rescue boats scrambled to pluck three people beneath the tangled wreckage. >> i went to the river bank and went to look at the currents going through the girders and

the women and men involved to rescue these people from the water was extraordinary. >> dan fly and his wife were in one of the vehicles. >> when i felt the water rushing in and i kind of came back to situational awareness and looking around, when you looked at the carnage of the metal and stuff around you, i assumed it was it at that point. there was no hope. that's what i was thinking, but here i stand. >> reporter: his wife and the other rescued man remain hospitalized with hypothermia. it is the most significant bridge failure since the 2007 minneapolis bridge collapse that left 13 people dead and dozens injured. snarling traffic for months. meanwhile, officials in washington are looking in to why the bridge collapsed, saying it could be months before it's fixed. the bridge behind me is part of interstate 5, the main road connecting the u.s. and canada and washington's governor warns this morning the delays and

detours could last well past the memorial day weekend. matt? >> chris daniels in washington this morning. thank you very much. lotte . a lot of reaction from the boy scout's decision to allow openly gay scouts but not openly gay scout leaders. a lot of people think it could split the organization in half. we have more from dallas, texas. >> reporter:er good morning. members of the boy scouts national council cast those historic ballots just outside of dallas yesterday. while some view lifting the ban as another sign of the fast-shifting views of homosexuality in this country, others say the boy scout did not do enough. a major milestone as one of america's best-known youth groups straps its ban on admitting openly gay boy scouts. >> now i have an opportunity to finish everything i started so many years ago.

60% voted to lift the ban. but openly gay men are not allowed to be leaders. >> i was excited because it doesn't effect me, it's really been working for her. >> not all reaction has been positive. >> when the boy scouts of america are going to put the interest of activists over and above the safety and security of our boys that is a program and leadership we can no longer trust. >> they considered letting local troops decide whether to allow gay scouts sparking a heated debate. church groups weighed in, many wanted to keep the ban in place. scout leaders decide to put it to a national vote. >> it's a difficult decision for a lot of people. we are moving forward together. >> reporter: so the new rule will go in to effect june 1st, 2014. a number of groups including

churches are threatening to stop sponsoring packs and troops. back to you. >> thank you, craig melvin. meantime president obama is set to address the u.s. naval academy's graduation today and expected to address the same themes we heard him talking about yesterday, drones and these closing of guantanamo among other things. let's get to peter alexander with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this was a significant speech. the president is shifting his case away from what he described as a boundless, global war on terror and pushing for less secretive and more restrained counterterrorism policy. >> this war, like all wars, must end. >> reporter: the president's focus, two key issues revealing clearer, more narrow guidelines for deadly drone strikes. arguing they are legal, effective and will continue. while also raising the standard for their use. >> before any strike is taken,

there must be near certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured. the highest standard we can set. >> reporter: on the prison camp in guantanamo bay, a renewed pledge to shut it down. the president announcing an end to the ban on transferring detainees back to yeming and calling for some to be moved to prisons on american soil and tried in civilian courts. >> the decisions that we are making now will define the type of nation and world that we leave to our children. >> reporter: many republicans remain dissatisfied. >> what would i have the united states of america do, lead, l d l-e-a l-e-a-d, the president does not lead. >> at one time the president was repeatedly interrupted and briefly left speechless by an anti-war activist. >> you are commander in chief. you can close guantanamo today. can you take the drones out of the hands of the cia? i love my country. i love the rule of law.

>> these are tough issues. and the suggestion that we can gloss over them is wrong. >> reporter: definitely not something you see every day. we learned how the heckler got in to what was supposed to be an invite-only event. officials at the site where it was held said she was pretending to be a member of the press. >> all right. peter alexander at the white house, thank you. we should mention, president obama just announced he will visit the jersey shore on tuesday with chris christie. with. >> we will ask the governor about that visit as he continues to sign t-shirts here at seaside heights. and a story here at one of the busiest airports. we have a look at the headlines with andrea. good morning. we will get to that in just a moment. but first break news. a british military fighter jet was scrambled this morning to escort a passenger jet flying from pakistan to manchester,

england. british officials say air traffic controllers received an emergency radar signal from the plane which had 297 passengers on board. the plane was diverted and landed at stansted airport, east of london. two men were arrested. this after an emergency landing which forced heathrow airport in london to shut down both of its runways. the engine was streaming smoke while in flight. all crew and passengers were safely evacuated and the runways have since reopened. the irs official responsible for the unit that targeted tea party groups has been plasd on administrative leave. lois lerner is the third official to be replaced since the scandal came to light earlier this month. lerner testified this week on capitol hill. another stunning twist in the jodi arias murder trial as the judge declares a mistrial in the penalty face of the case.

70 degrees right here in san jose. we will hit 61 in san francisco. getting into your memorial day weekend, we have shores on the way late monday into tuesday. of what lies ahead. superstorm sandy did about $40 billion worth of damage. recovery is still under way. we'll talk to new jersey's governor chris christie about that in a moment but first a look back at the last seven months. it was a storm for the record books. sandy killed dozens, forced thousands to flee and wrecked nearly 350,000 homes along the jersey shore alone. while residents are fiercely determined to restore the shore the recovery has seen challenges. governor chris christie recently faced the frustration. >> i lost a house in northern beach. we feel like the stepchild. look at it over there. have you seen it? >> i've seen it. >> it's the same as six months ago. >> the problem is everyone has to decide what they're going to do with their own homes. i can't decide and when they're

going to knock them down and try to rebuild. >> reporter: some homeowners say insurance money has been slow to arrive and the remapping of the flood zones may discourage rebuilding but above all this area recognizes the need to restart its economic engine. the state features more than 130 miles of majestic coastline. last year tourism brought in $19 billion. >> people know the boardwalk is back, it will be back here memorial day weekend. >> reporter: seaside heights mayor says it's more than just business. >> we're putting it back together for all the people who have been here and have the memories of coming here and all of the new memories that will be formed. >> reporter: new memories formed as the boardwalks return, standing as a symbol of hope for the jersey shore and a promise for the future. chris christie is the governor of the state of new jersey, governor it's always good to

have you. >> thanks for coming to jersey. >> scale of one to ten where does the recovery stand right now? >> well it's an eight in some places and a four in others. it depends. here on the boardwalk people will see it as about an eight out of ten when they start coming here in june but for a lot of the home observers in the state it will take the better part of the next year to get them back. >> was that the strategy, get the tourism money back flowing in for the state's coffers? >> no, i think it was the easiest one first. homeowne homeowners, people have to figure out if they want to build and how much they want to elevate. here it's a set thing. >> so much coverage of the storm, so much coverage of the aftermath, so much coverage of the damage. are you worried, when you think of how vital tourism money is to this state and your economy, are you worried the tourists will have heard about all of that and

go elsewhere? >> yes, we are and that's why we're doing things like this, we have a $25 million advertising and marketing plan going on. 80% of the jersey shore you won't notice any difference from last summer. where we're standing now there's differences. >> you saw what happened down in oklahoma on monday that devastating tornado that damaged so many homes. you have already come out and said you will support any amount of federal aid that the president decides is necessary to help those people recover. would the fiscally conservative chris christie make that comment had he not go through superstorm san sandy? >> i did. i think emergencies are a totally different thing. americans help other americans when we're in trouble and that's always been what this country has been about and matt, you know, we never support irresponsible spending. that's why i said everything that's necessary to help them absolutely and we should be doing it quickly. >> so much was made of the

president visiting you after the storm, coming back on tuesday to look at the recovery and where it stands. i know that's good for the state of new jersey but do you ever worry another visit and more images of you two walking along the boardwalk will cook your personal political goose? >> no, because i think what people in my state want more than anything else is for me to do my job and the. the wants to come back here and see the progress and look at it himself, i never worry about that. i'm doing my job. >> you're not a guy worried about 2016 and what you may or may not do. i want to think if he wants to see recovery tweet him photos. >> bottom line you can't experience it unless you're here and see for yourself and he's the president of the united states, if he wants to come and see the people of new jersey, i'm the governor and i'll be here to welcome him. >> the national hurricane center released its outlook for this summer's hurricane season forecasting an extremely active season with three to six major storms of at least category 3 along this area.

how worried are you about that as a governor of a state that has so much exposed shoreline. >> of course you're always worried. we gave at the office last year. i think the hurricanes will bypass us but we'll be ready as we were last year but of course we're concerned. >> earlier this week you said you don't think there's been any proof that sandy was caused by climate change. several experts said the destruction from sandy was probably more severe because of elements of climate change including rising sea levels. are you not willing to say that? >> no, i'm not. first of all, this is their business. they study it and they say probably, maybe. all i said was i'm not shown any definitive proof of what caused it. this is distraction. i have a place to rebuild and people want to talk to me about esoteric theories. no i'm not going to buy things

about it, especially when they won't definitively say anything and it's their business. >> as you stand with me now you're a little bit smaller than you were the last time we stood together. much talked about surgery for weight loss, how are you doing? >> i feel good, things are going well. i think there's a lot of attention, more than i would have imagined but the -- >> you really didn't think you'd get that attention. >> i misevaluated that part of it but at the end it's nice because i talk to people they ask how am i feeling. most of it is born out of concern for me and that's great. >> do you hope to inspire others, do you hope there will be a christie effect down the road. no, i hope there's a christie effect for christie and if stuff happens for other folks that's great. i'm doing it for mary pat, for my kids and myself to be better and healthier. if it inspires other people great for them but that's not

hurricanes, three to six major hurricanes and as you can see that's way above normal. i don't make it, i just tell you about it. don't boo me, okay? wow, they're turning quickly, a crowd that could become a mob. we have a risk of strong storms back through the plains. severe thunderstorms possible with isolated large hail, strong winds possible, a lot of rain out of the system over the next 24 hours we're looking at heavy rain, showers and thunderstorms basically going to bring anywhere from three to five inches of raindrops, central texas on into louisiana. that's what's goin 7:34.

unbelievable this sounds. >> i wasn't feeling any of it. my mind, my feelings were for those kids underneath me and i could tell they were okay, i could feel they were okay. >> they're still talking to you? >> they were still talking. >> this is a classroom. >> reporter: but in the third grade building there was no talking. principal simpson showed us where teacher jennifer doan and her students were trapped. ms. doan was draped over two little boys, a wall on top of them. >> she was hearing crying and crying and crying, and then after the tornado the crying stopped and it's what she said was the crying was horrible but when it stopped, it was worse. >> reporter: seven students were gone, kindergarten teacher erin baxter says she's still in a state of disbelief and shock. >> when i stopped moving and i just sit down, it just comes back. >> your voice broke when you

popularized seaside heights but not the first to put the jersey shore on the map. take a look. music and entertainment have always been part of the jersey shore. atlantic city, home to the world's first boardwalk, came up with a plan for tourists to stay past labor day. they organized a pageant known today as miss america. sinatra, marilyn, martin and lewis made the shore a hotbed of entertainment in the '40s and '50s and now hbo's boardwalk empire is taking viewers back to new jersey's prohibition past and speaking of boardwalk empires, monopoly, park place, baltic avenue, atlantic city inspired the board's colorful properties. it was at summer of 1960 and an 18-year-old who went by the name of chubby checker introduced his first of the twist at the rainbow club in wild wood. the duop motels are still

intact. since we were here a month ago. >> great thing when it actually happened we came after the devastation and this is known to be a happy place, everybody is smiling and having a good time, we came after the storm it was the exact opposite, it was dead, silent and it was awful so to see this being rebuilt makes me happy. >> we came where the jersey shore, the show was shot. nicole, what do you think is special about the place. there is a certain magic about it. >> i don't know, i've been coming here since i was 13 with my family and getting older 21, you've seen what happened so you just come here to have a good time, a summer place, you come with your family and friends. it's just a good time and i love that everyone's here and it's getting rebuilt and amazing. >> people who run the shore, the businesses here are hoping tourists return in huge numbers. give me something people don't know about the jersey shore, what is a hidden gem that they should check out if they come

sandy. only people who call this place home can tell you the true story of the jersey shore. >> the jersey shore has it all. >> my mother was raised here. i was raised here. i raised three sons here. >> it's just a beautiful place to grow up. i am a shop owner and florist. it was six months trying to get back into business but i'm happy to be back open to be able to work, it's a great thing. anything to put a smile on someone's face and say you know, it's going to be okay, flowers do that. >> i preach. i teach. i'm the plumber, the electrician, the general contractor, attorney, confidant and floor sweeper. they come in looking for hope and we can offer some hope. right after the storm i think our mantra was if we're not dead, we're not done. >> when nobody had power, i said we got to open no matter what we have to be here just for people to have a place to go through. now everything starts to come back.

>> i'm a third generation contractor, my grandfather started in 1922, my father followed. i've been at it for 45 years. never thought i'd see some of the things that i did 20 years ago resurface and have to be put back together but i'm trying to make these houses look just the way they did prior to the storm, if not a little better. >> it's a lot more than a house. it's our history. 35 years ago we moved in, and it was just horribly run down and we spent our life putting it back together and we made it into our home. so it was very devastating when the storm came and took it all out. i woke up one morning and said, i am going to focus not on what's happened, but on where we're going. we just got back two days ago, so we're just going to move forward now.

a great place and people from the tri-state area have a vacation spot again. >> we were up in the chopper right after it happened. >> it's remarkable. you think back to that day looking from up above i thought the recovery it seemed absolutely daunting and i think to everybody else whose experiences, victims of this you think how could you possibly have these businesses open and back in business seven months later but look what's happening here. it is the story of revitalization, the story of overcoming all and everything is on its way back. there are some areas still suffering and it will be a long hall, rockaways a while, monday toe lo mantoloking. >> we went up and down asbury park, point pleasant, atlantic city and seaside heights and the destruction was not only just the infrastructure, it changed the topography of the shoreline of new jersey.

it is unprecedented and to see what they've done is pretty amazing and i think it's emblematic for the other shoreline communities of connecticut, of delaware, of maryland, the carolinas, new york, again, they're all working hard to bring this back, some are having a little more success than others but everybody wants this to come back. they're not going to rest until it's done but the national hurricane center just out with the forecast for 2013. >> not looking good? >> it is very active. normal number of named storms 11, they're predicting anywhere from 13 to 20. 11 named hurricanes and of those three to six could be major hurricanes. that doesn't mean they'll all make landfall but you just need one. >> coming down here, as somebody who grew up in no, jerth jersey drive down, springsteen playing,

investigators will search for the cause of a harrowing bridge collapse that sent two cars plunging into the icy skagit river near seattle, washington, last night. rescuers were able to save all three people inside the cars. the collapse was apparently triggered web the truck hit an overhead section of the bridge. another stunning twist in the jodi arias murder trial as the judge declares a mistrial in the penalty phase of the case. nbc's diana alvear has the latest from phoenix. >> reporter: andrea, good morning. we knew wednesday the jury was having trouble agreeing on a sentence and this very long trial is about to get much longer. they're going to have to choose a new jury for the penalty phase. life or death. in the end the jury couldn't decide. >> unanimously find, having considered all of the facts and circumstances that the defendant should be sentenced, no unanimous agreement, signed foreperson.

>> reporter: a hung jury. it was too much for victim travis alexander's family, arias herself appeared stunned, even judge sherry stevens seemed to need a moment to process what happened. >> this was not your typical trial. you were asked to perform very difficult responsibilities. >> now the focus turns to the difficulty of choosing a new jury to sentence arias. >> how do you get a jury of your peers who wasn't told that for all these five months and every day on the front page of the paper was jodi arias. >> reporter: and the headlines won't be going away any time soon, a tough reality for alexander's loved ones. >> losing him was tough the first time. going through this all over again has been incredibly challenging. >> reporter: and if you were wondering why jodi arias' family was not in the courtroom, we know why thanks to an exclusive statement from her mother, sandy, she tells us "i am very upset that we were not called to

they're raising money to rebuild the belmar, new jersey, boardwalk. 8-year-old hannah doherty is here with her father, the mayor, matt and new jersey native kevin jonas of the jonas brothers. >> good morning, everybody. >> hannah, what did you decide to do to help rebuild the boardwalk? >> i was on my front porch and all i heard every day was blah, blah, blah, something about the boardwalk. >> that would be dad and mom talking about rebuilding the boardwalk. >> what did you decide to do? >> i found some shells and i started making little designs with markers and i told my best friend, madelyn, and then julia came in, and then it just kind of started. >> you started doing these shells and selling them and you guys have made some really great

artwork. >> and dad, something like 5,000 bucks they've raised designing and painting and selling the shells? >> we have different levels of sponsorship. the big cahuna is $5,000 and the lowest is $25. may 15th they gave a check to the city for $5,000 and they're all big cahunas. >> kevin i'm looking at your shell there. >> my attempt at the ocean. what do you think? >> pretty. >> really nice. >> they're outdoing me. i'll stick to the guitar. >> you've got a north american tour coming up. >> we do. >> also wrapping up your series on e!. >> very exciting time, thank you. we had the season finale this sunday and we're going on the road july 10th. of course we're coming to new jersey it's our home state. this is a big deal for us. >> what does it mean for you to be back here as a guy who grew

[ crunch ] welcome back to seaside heights at the jersey shore. the "today" show on the last leg of our "great american adventure." we talked to governor chris christie early on. he launched a $25 million initiative to bring tourism back to the state but he does not get all the credit in that family. first lady mary pat christie is here. she heads up the new jersey relief fund having raised $34 million already. is that the right number? >> that's correct. yep. >> tell me about the fun, how it started and how you're getting all that cash. >> a lot of phone calls, remarkably we have donors over 28,000 donors worldwide, and my

husband called me three days after the storm and said we have to do this and you're in charge. here's the name of a lawyer and they pretty much hung up the phone. >> you have bono on board, bruce, bon jovi, kevin jonas. >> all great americans on my honorary board, great new jerseyians and we really are working hard to keep raising money. >> are you surprised, mrs. christie, of what this boardwalk looks today. i am. having been here in the days after the storm your husband came out in his own way and said we'll be back by memorial day. i'm not sure a lot of us believed him. did you at the time? >> i'm generally thought of as the optimistic one in the family and i really knew with the hard work and great laborers we have in new jersey that we would get it done. >> a lot of people are still hurting. we want to celebrate seaside and the boardwalk and a lot is back but if you go back a few blocks a lot of people are having trouble getting their insurance claims through. what do you and the governor say to those people? >> that's one of the things we're working on is the

hurricane relief fund so we are raising money for financial and legal services to help people, for mental health services and for what we call gap funding so when people get their insurance they still have a lot of money they need to finally rebuild their homes so we're trying to show them that we're going to be here at the fund until it's all finished. >> in the midst of all this recovery your husband went through and quietly and tried to privately have lap band surgery. >> right. >> said he did it for you and your four children. what were those private discussions like at home? >> it's really something we've been struggling with for years and i this i that when the governor finally decided to do that, we were all really supportive and we're just happy that he has a lot of hope about the future in that regard. >> is it something you'd encouraged him to do previously? >> actually it's something i listened to and we talked about. i always am encouraging him in terms of what he wants to do but a lot of back and forth. >> i have to ask you, president

light and fit greek! ♪ dannon! good morning to you. it is 9:26. i'm marla tellez. a palo alto man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a family in the czech republic. police there believe kevin dahlgren killed a family of four and then set their home on fire and then fled to the u.s. he was arrested last night at dulles airport near washington, d.c. three people are recovering in the hospital after a crash in east san jose. two vehicles collided sending an suv slamming into a light poll near the evergreen neighborhood. one woman was trapped inside and had to be rescued. police say alcohol may have played a role in this crash. aftershocks are being felt this morning following the 5.7 quake in the northern part of our state.

it was so strong people in the bay area reported feeling some sort of shaking. this is surveillance from a grocery store in greeneville plymouth complaint near the epicenter of the quake. we haven't received reports of damage. we are hearing one woman in sacramento was hurt. she reportedly fell down the stairs when the quake hit. we'll have a check of the forecast and our morning commute after the break.

>> thank you. >> let's talk about some grilling things, i like to do a little barbeque sauce that's sweet and sour, so you probably have some of this stuff at home this has a little mango marmalade. i put in a little soy sauce. to make it sour. little bit of lime juice and then i spice it up with my favorite, habanero. all you have to do is put it together like this. mix it up. you don't have to cook and you prok probably have this stuff in your pantry right now. >> the mango chutney, i don't know. >> you flip over your shrimp. if you want to season this, a little oil, salt. >> do you marinate it or put it on top? >> i put it on like this and brush it on so it's important the last five minutes of cooking or well let's say two or three minutes, you brush it on because barbeque sauces are sweet and sour and they burn. unlike an marinate, you want them to go on the end of the cooking, not the beginning. >> is this it right here? >> that's it. you can put some of the sauce in

the middle and dip it, if you like. >> thank you. honey. >> let's move on to this. >> i've got my steak cooking here i'm going to flip it over. >> that's good. >> that is delicious. >> this is a cooked bauer cue sauce, sweet and sour, we start out with pineapple juice and some water. i put some honey. this one has ketchup like a traditional barbeque sauce has and wostershire. and this has the red wine vinegar and the jalapeno. >> again, right? >> so again, the sweet and sour sauce that cooks for about 10, 15 minutes, reduces by half. once it's done, i take the jalapeno out if you don't want it too spicy. puree it and you have it ready to go like this. >> you purree it then? >> here's my sweet and sour
