and the marussia of max chilton makes it in for fresh tires. the monaco formula 1 grand prix on nbc sports, under a safety car. as the field follows the mercedes safety car through the tunnel, this is the area in question. exiting the tunnel, back out into the sunshine, the run downhill to the nouvelle chicane. and this is where french driver romain grosjean, there's parts of his lotus car still laying on the track as he slammed into the back of toro rosso driver daniel ricciardo. >> seemed to be a bit of a lack of judgment on the overtaking. daniel ricciardo was definitely blocking the track by staying in the middle. caught grosjean by surprise how. and he just rammed right in the back of him.

here they are coming out of the tunnel into the sunlight. ricciardo leading. and then he just runs right in the back of him. last time we saw that he was kimi raikkonen running into the back of adrian sutil when adrian sutil was going for his best-ever finish. >> romain grosjean in his second full season in formula 1 was stood down for a race last year for incidents that could have been avoided. most moatbly on the opening lap of the race. and certainly affected fernando alonso's world championship campaign last year. he's a driver that's admired for his speed but romain grosjean seems to get tangled up in far too many incidents. >> let's check in with will buxon. >> imagine the frustration for nico rosberg right now. he had a 4.5 second lead, going a great job. down to zero. if you imagine the frustration for rosberg, imagine also the frustration for lewis hamilton who was staring at a very strong podium. we've heard from mercedes that

wolfe has confirmed they did not ask lewis to slow down under that safety car when they came in to pit stop. that was lewis' own choice. and because of that he now finds himself off the podium and down in fourth place. this finish to this race is going to be incredibly exciting. >> no generosity. >> as we see romain grosjean into pit lane, i think there's concern of suspension. earlier on when we saw grosjean back into the pit, just before the car was released you see something there on the wish bone. you saw one of the mechanics point down towards the wish bone but at that very second, the car was released back into the fray. i think one of the mechanics saw something, on roman grosjean's car. >> yeah, they're pulling it in. it's over. >> closest that he gets to a home grand prix, the frenchman who is out. on the podium once this year but it won't be happening today. >> so as will mentioned, think
7:03 am
about nico rosberg, and as we flew the question a little earlier, how many surges can he withstand from the three-time world champion? >> he's about to get a nasty shock. >> this's fast-acting bird. >> some reflexes for you. >> we saw that same pigeon, i think in the gp-2 races. after the same incident. >> you think he'd learn by now, wouldn't you? >> well this won't take long for that area to be cleaned up on the run down to the nouvelle chicane. >> here is the corner that has grabbed several drivers this week. sainte devote. >> poor romain grosjean crashed here on lap one last year and crashed three times this weekend, and it's his second consecutive retirement. >> okay, kimi, we're losing water from the engine because it's too hot. losing water from the engine because it's too hot.
7:04 am
>> so, the message to kimi raikkonen we need to try and get some cooler air through that car. >> yeah, well of course, going behind the safety car doesn't help because obviously the only cooling air that goes through these racing cars is air that's generated by moving through the air. and the safety car tends to warm these cars up more than anything. >> a little earlier on we were talking about that grosjean incident and whether or not there was damage on the car. look at this, the first pit stop where we saw grosjean come into the lane. just before the car is released keep your eye over here you're going to see a mechanic point right there, right there, look he's already seen it. this guy here has already seen the damage onto roman grosjean's car but it's too late because the team released the car back into pit lane. >> green light on above roman grosjean and green, go. the lights are out on the safety car. ready to go racing for the final 12 laps. >> poor rosberg is thinking,
7:05 am
gosh, how many more starts are we going to make in this race to stay in front? trying to put some heat in the tires. >> as we said at the top of this broadcast, david, monaco is never easy, is it? >> oh. just been particularly hard for poor old nico rosberg. rosberg slowed considerably. comes in rascasse. you'll see the yellow go to green, we're back to racing! let's hope we see green all the way to the checkered flag. nico rosberg grew up here in monaco. born in germany, but he's been here the majority of his life. still lives here. this could be a significant day, a very special day for the rosberg family. >> it will be a great day in the pubs tomorrow night. but he does it again. he keeps his nerve. the cars handling well and he's scooped away from sebastian vettel. thinking, what about this mercedes this weekend? i thought they were going to give up. >> fall towards the end of the race. >> yeah. >> they're not doing what we want them to do. >> keep an eye on that orange, white and green car. that is the mercedes powered

sports vehicle of adrian sutil. he's pulled off a couple of brilliant moves one on button, one on alonso and perez is the next one on his list. >> yeah, it was looking pretty racey there and paul di resta his teammate has hauled himself up to 11th. just one spot out of the points. >> down into the nouvelle chicane. perez is working himself. starting to build on -- >> look at that raikkonen knows that he's got a fight on his hands. we should give a shout out to paul di resta the second force india because he's about to come to the piscine and he started way back in the back. it's been a great run for the cousin of dario franchitti who goes for his fourth indy 500 today. >> was very loud but i think hamilton is in the front while draining heavily, perhaps? >> whatever it is, he's in all sorts of trouble now with his tires. and these closing laps.
7:07 am
we know kimi raikkonen also in some sort of problem as well with his car, with mechanical problems. >> if he's losing water, if he loses enough water the thing will overheat and that will be the end of the story for him today. here's the two red bulls. hamilton, raikkonen. look at perez there, looking very racy. >> the next one on the list further back in the back jean eric vergne and the rosso will be the fight for the final world championship points. let's ride with perez into the tunnel. >> i've got to say if raikkonen is losing water from the engine and the engine is beginning to overheat as a result of that, it will be extremely lucky to get a

formula 1 car to the other ten laps with the engine beginning to overheat. >> advantage last time around 1.4 seconds. what is it this time? 1.8 seconds. rosberg is doing exactly what he did after the red flag, and the suspension of the race. he's just eking out a few tenths of a second each lap to build that comfortable margin that grew to as much as four-plus seconds. >> he's been doing a great job. a very, very impressive job, right from the opening laps of this grand prix. they've all had problems, all the teams have had problems to overcome. safety car issues and then a suspended race issue and tires to deal with different tires but he has kept his head and has just got on with it every single lap. >> yeah, he's behind his teammate lewis hamilton in the world championship at the moment but this will go a long way towards evening it up. >> yes.
7:09 am
>> down through the tunnel again. incredible light change when you come out of there and here right down -- whoa. >> perez and raikkonen are fighting over that spot again! now these two guys ran through the chicane several laps ago and they're at it again. i wonder if perez made a big lunge. >> i wonder whether -- >> raikkonen's car was unsettled. was that a result of contact from behind? >> i mean raikkonen gave a big swerve, some big black marks on the road behind him. alonso's got some debris on his front wing as well. there goes sutil. >> look at the curve as they come to the noghes corner. >> watch sutil. he's feeling racey. he's feeling confident that he can capitalize and move on perez. the next two cars is where it's at. this will tell us what happened between raikkonen and perez. >> raikkonen moved over -- oh! >> oh! >> wow. good gracious. >> kimi said i'm going to make that avenue very narrow and

perez just tried to barge his way through. >> oh, that's perez's competitive race over. i think he's last too much wing there. >> you live by the blitz you die by the blitz. >> kimi raikkonen gave no quarter there at all, pushed him over, kept pushing over and that's what i mean. perez having started that move, once kimi closed the door there was no -- he couldn't slow down any quicker than he was already slowing down and he is bound to hit the guard rail. which makes -- what makes racing here so very, very difficult. >> we continue to watch the middle of the pack of the top ten up front 2.3 seconds is now the lead that nico rosberg boasts over sebastian vettel. webber is some 3.5 seconds out of the lead. it's a her des red bull, red bull podium at the moment. >> look. >> button goes on the inside of fernando alonso or does he? yes, button gets that position. >> raikkonen is in.

>> he had the soft spot, not the supersoft. >> guys that's massive in the world championships because kimi was only four points behind sebs ayn vettel. vettel will get second place as long as he maintains position. there you saw alonso lose a spot to jenson button. so again power to sebastian vettel. >> and sutil down to his favorite spot. is he going to make a run on perez? no because perez must be off the pace now. this is the way the field packs it in behind him. when you lose that much front wing around here. >> raikkonen hitting has allowed paul di resta to move into the top ten after starting 17th in this grand prix. >> how is perez going to handle the car coming down here in the nouvelle chicane with much of the front wing on the left-hand side missing. >> of course it's a miracle to me they spend millions of dollars in the wind tunnels. they nuclearing the wings to

heck like that. look at this. >> that was lovely. >> look at this. it's alonso, alonso knew he had to relinquish that position. jenson button positioned his car beautifully. >> you can see the damage onto the left-hand side of the front wing of alonso's ferrari, as well. a lot of guys one way or another -- >> perez. you see what i mean? once he was committed he couldn't slow down any more. i think he committed to that move in the tunnel. >> i think he did. perez is a very luck kwl driver still to be in this grand prix. >> he has shown some wild driving before and ittons. here's the fight for third. lewis hamilton in the fight for mercedes still chasing mark webber. >> he's not going to make the same mistake that perez did there and commit himself to a point where there's no turning back. which is what makes the overtaking here so difficult. out of the tunnel, 170 miles an

declined. and hence severed their friendship. sutil did not forgive lewis hamilton for that, and a journalist in the press conference asked lewis hamilton and adrian sutil, what is the status of your friendship now? and basically they said they are trying to mend it. but sutil is waiting for lewis to make the first step. >> well he might do, too. but it could be a long time coming. lewis hamilton must be feeling pretty miffed that his teammate has made mincemeat of him today. he tried valiantly to get past mark webber. couldn't pull it off. meanwhile rosberg who's led every lap of this race, is lapping in 18.5. vettel 18.9. and hamilton is down in the mid 19s. so, rosberg showing a lot more pace than hamilton this weekend. >> steve, you and i know david does and will and myself, we love formula 1 history. and there is a little bit on the line today. not only if nico rosberg can win

stake here the drivers and the second and third infiniti red bull racing will increase their lead in the world championships over ferrari with only point alonso no points for felipe massa today. alonso doesn't get points for seventh. mercedes-benz will pick up some good points from rosberg and from hamiltohamilton. but red bull will look very strong in the constructive title when they come out of this race. >> incidentally with kimi raikkonen being forced to pit very late in the race the lotus driver, the lotus lead driver is out of the world championship points. that plays massively into the hands of seb an yast vettel and with fernando alonso down in seventh he will score points but it's not as many as he had hoped. so again the pendulum swings the way of sebastian vettel and helps him in his quest for his fourth world title. >> don't take any risks. >> all right. that's enough. you don't need any more points for that. >> satisfaction.
