good evening. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm diane dwyer. one person is dead and 11 people taken to hospitals after a crash involving a party bus on the peninsula. it happened early on highway 101 near the broadway exit. nbc bay area's kimberly terry has more for us. kimberly? >> diane, that crash happened at about 2:00 a.m. this morning. chp says 43-year-old man from oakland was driving south bo bund on 101 when his car hit the center divider coming to rest in the safe lane. a party bus carrying 18 people hit the front end of that car. the car's driver survived but is

in critical condition. his passenger, a36-year-old san mateo woman was killed. >> we believe the driver and passenger were drinking earlier in the evening. we have not arrested anyone or made charges. once we find out what the level was we will be able to charge them with either felony dui and also possibly manslaughter. >> nine of the party bus passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries. the driver of the party bus was injured but refused medical attention at the scene. two others were involved the crash and said they are looking into the exact chain of events leading to this incident. being that it is memorial day weekend, law enforcement wants it remind drivers they were out in force this holiday weekend. nones are in from santa clara county where between midnight

friday and midnight saturday, 37 dui arrests made. that's compared with 27 arrests during the same period last year. various law enforcement agencies say they will have extra dui saturation patrols out this evening. live in redwood city, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. . >> the police called one driver's attempt to escape. several cars crashed on the expressway and one man pulled a shotgun out of the car and took off. police set up a perimeter near the honda dealership. an hour later, a car was stopped leafing the area. in the car a passenger who told police he was having chest pains, so they called an ambulance. after the ambulance arrived police say they brought a witness who identified the man in pain as the one who had run off with the shotgun. they believe he was using the ambulance as a way to escape the

area. he was identified as 26-year-old alejadro. he is charged with not having a license. several power poles caught fire. there were about 5,000 customers in total without power and some streets were blocked off because of the high voltage running through the lines. >> like a torch, yes it was. there were flames coming out and there was definitely smoke coming out of the top of the poles. >> since we've been here, it has burnt down about two feet. top of our poles. >> pge spokeswoman says they drizzle bd by dust or pollutionn the line. >> the mud like substance conducted electricity. when that happens, in some occasions, that can lead to what we were seeing today.

which is, in some cases, pole fires. >> she added that rain would have washed the dirt right off but the spring hasn't been wet enough. she said pg & e work year round to keep the lines clean but did not say when those particular lines were last cleaned. all power is expected to be restored within the next few hours. >> some drizzle this morning and there might be much more than drizzle headed our way. >> let's check p with meteorologist, rob. what's going on, rob? >> a system later on tonight into tomorrow, right now we are still enjoying sunshine, breezy conditions as we see on the satellite view. patches of low clouds, crossing the golden gate bridge. notice the increased cloud cover toward north and west. the next system you see on the satellite radar view, it will drop further south. there is more drizzle coming in. notice north bay early tomorrow morning. you see more than just drizzle but periods of light and maybe

briefly moderate rain, dropping in around 11:00 this the morning. drizzle to start and perhaps a little rain to finish as we head through memorial day monday. we are watching that plus a significantly warmer finish to your seven-day forecast as well. look at this and full forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks very much. an apartment fire forcing evacuations of a hundred people in mill valley. starting at about 3:00 a.m. at shelter hill apartments. firefighters were able to contain the flames in about 40 minutes. two apartment units were destroyed but we're told they were in an unoccupied area of the complex that's being renovated. >> nobody appeared to be in real danger tonight. however, the sheriff's office with the mill valley pd did do a fantastic job of getting people out of the way, that fire area very quickly. >> the cause of that fire is still under investigation. >> we are learning more about a drowning that claimed the life of 13-year-old antioch boy yesterday.

investigators believe the victim's shoe somehow ended up in the canal or intersection of hill crist avenue and wild horse drive. he went to get it and got caught up in the fast-moving water. the teen's 10-year-old cousin tried to rescue him, realizing the water was too powerful, we went to get help but it was too late. the teen's body was found in the water two hours later. >> a boeing 787 dreamliner flights today resumed. flights in san jose are supposed to start again as well soon. ana's commercial flight in japan follows 170 test flights which were required after battery fires on board. san jose international airport launched dreamliner service january 11 but because of battery problems grounded lights just six days later. well ana plans to resume dreamliner service between san jose and japan on june 1st assuming all goes as planned. first cal train to use the new track rolled through san bruno this morning. $147 million project to improve

safety by elevating tracks over san bruno, san mateo and angus avenues. grave separations help reduce accidents by separating vehicle and pedestrian traffic from train tracks at railroad crossing. more than 400 people use the station on an average work day. >> teachers agreed it a new contract that will change how they are evaluated and promoted in the future. the three-year contract between san jose unified school district will tie pay increases to college credets. those who deny the criteria could be fired. those contracts start january 1st. >> the uss san francisco navy warship received a tribute today. >> this afternoon's memorial

ceremony was dedicated to the 100 sailors and marines killed in action during the november 1942 battle. the men who fought in 17 major battles on the uss san francisco during world war ii. several of the set rans on hand for today's tribute. >> i could hear more and more people recognize the value of peace and fear that we had and how they got it and how we keep it. and those that pay the price, many are not here, and many are. >> uss is not fran was the first navy warship to be awarded the citations by franklin d. roosevelt in 1942. next at 6:00, parents with children behind bars. some are them are followed, all the way to college.

that means more people and family members on the outside. in tonight's bay area crowd it focuses on the children and one north bay group dedicated to helping them. time is everything in prison. and measured simply by how long someone has been in, how long if ever until they get out. >> anyone have two words they think can describe themselves. >> it makes sense then that to this group children of parents in prison, time is a powerful gift. one that project avery strives to give. >> the length of relationship is really where we sign. so for the past seven years, herb has been executive director, one of just a handful of nonprofits in the country to focus exclusively on children.

>> and enrolling them as young as eight years old and staying with many of them for the next ten years of their life, no matter where that life takes them. >> because the search for affordable housing, incarcerated parents, break down in housing arrangements, causing the population it move around a lot. >> again, to the left. >> what project savery does with the children is easy to describe. difficult to quantify. simply put, avery gives the children experiences they wouldn't normally have in life. on this day, it is dance and brazilian martial arts at oakland's destiny arts center but also overnight camping trips and cross country skiing experiences. >> and while savery does try to sneak life lessons into the fun, the larger message they send to these kids is, they're not alone. something monica garcia might have felt. >> before he was able to tell my friends a about this, i was

. you can see the golden gate bridge. we have that blanket of fog moving in underneath that. drizzle will follow at times. maybe more than just drizzle, as we get into the day tomorrow. 61 for a high in san francisco. 76, 78 in south san jose and 70s around the north bay. now we see the sea breeze strengthen once again. blustery at times for the evening and winds continue to stay strongly on shore and ensuring that tomorrow, temperatures mainly in 60s to 70s again. this system is dropping down the coast tonight. instead of a trace amounts of rain we had from drizzle, maybe as much as tenth inch of rain. so a little stronger than this morning and it looks to be an all-day event. starting off in the morning and transitioning to the south bay as we head into the evening. monday you are looking at scattered showers here. nothing too haeavy but still, 9:00 monday seeing scattered showers. we should see a break for

tuesday afternoon. one more system will come on no n there for wednesday morning. then behind that, high pressure builds in and we will see a completely different looking seven-day forecast. as temperatures start it warm up as we head towards next weekend. for the morning, not too chilly outside once we have low clouds and drizzle, temperatures in low 50s tomorrow morning but our high temperatures with more cloud cover during the afternoon are going to come down a couple degrees. closer to upper 6 os in san jose. 70s in santa cruz and areas south of san jose. 70s around the east bay. cool and breezy again for san francisco. high of 62. about mid 60s for oakland and upper 60s in north bay thanks to the rain providing cooling there. so scattered showers, part of your memorial day forecast. temperatures in 60s inland and low 70s further inland. same on tuesday. though tuesday will be the dryer of the two days. then one more chance of early showers wednesday morning. notice as we pass wednesday, temperatures will jump up.

we will see some breezy and dry conditions on thursday. we will have to watch out for maybe a brief ramp up, as we go from moist and marine air environment to one that looks more like summer by next weekend. we will push 90 degrees inland by next saturday. receive not day forecast didn't get the memo about the unofficial visit from summer. >> we'll be right back.

you can call him a. sort of. a penguins escaped. >> it was captured on video. it opened to the public on friday and one witness said her 4-year-old child's safety, she was concerned about it and thinks sea world should modify the attraction so penguins can't get out. so the penguins are safe and everyone else at the same time. >> are penguins especially fierce? >> they don't seem fierce. >> they don't seem fierce to me. >> we'll be right back.

they are off to a great start. you will see the highlights on the brink of elimination so this is game six between sharks and kings first period sharks on the power play. calling for delay game penalty. sharks with 5 on 3 advantage. big joe shornton for the goal and sharks are up 1-20. they add a second goal in the second period. also on joe thornton line, as joel gets his first goal of the series. bottom of the second, buster posey leading off. he takes a seventh pitch on that bat and turns it into his seventh home run of the season. he is now on ten-game hitting streak. sixth inning, game tried at two. brandon belt. he unties it. double over the head of dexter fowler. two come around it score. giant win this one 7 -3 and series as well.

>> after matt cain overcame a slow start, it was the giants' offense that delivered. san francisco tallied a total of ten hits against colorado. being led by hunter pence and brandon belt they each had two-out two-run double that gave the giants their 15th come back win. >> we've been between the bats pretty well. since we've been home. and guys are just putting together good at-bats. when we are getting good pitches to hit, we're getting the barrel on it and good things are happening. >> we have a good, a great offense that we were able to do that and i think guys are confident that they know they will score runs. we get behind and they probably really enjoy it if we not get behind as much as we have been doing.
