doors. a shopping center, apartment complex and surrounding area were evacuated for three hours until the bomb squad reported the pressure cooker was empty. >> what comes to mind immediately is the boston marathon, the tragedy that happened back east and we would like to avoid that here. pressure cookers are obviously -- could be used as bombs, and we didn't want to take any chances as far as anyone getting hurt. well, police say the incident should serve as a reminder that people need to be more vigilant about what they leave around. and as sergeant shawn thompson alluded to. the pressure cooker brought back memories of the bombings in boston. as you may recall the suspects in the bombings carried two pressure cooker bombs in their backpack, they killed two people and injuries others. police say they have more clues from a drowning koet of a

13-year-old boy from antioch. the boy's shoe ended in the canal. when he went into n to get it he slipped into the water. 109-year-old cousin tried to rescue the boy but realized the water was too powerful and ran to get help. the canal is about ten feet deep and the current ask run as much as 12 miles an hour. firefighters trying to figure out what caused two vacant bay area apartment units to go up in flames. the fire started early yesterday morning in the shelter hill apartments in millvale. about 100 people had to be evacuated from surrounding buildings. firefighters what were able to contain those flames in about 40 minutes. two apartment buildings were destroyed. firefighters closed the investigation of the brush fire that forced evacuation of several concord complexes this

right here. big batch of moisture, a front coming in quickly. as we head throughout the day, we have showers headed our way especially if you live north of the bay area. let's look what we're expettict and take it to the future cast. at 3:00 p.m., you can see light showers moving in. but still mostly dry in san francisco. you've gotten to about 3:00 in the city then showers roll in between 3:00 to 5:00 when we get our showers down here in the south bay. that's it, 5:00, san jose if you want to mark that time frame. then as we get into the overnight hours, showers will continue. so you need a slower than usual commute. we're also watching that this morning and let you know if anything big happens. as we head throughout the rest of the day tuesday, sun comes right back out and it's going to be really nice. highs today right around 71 degrees in livermore. 70 for concord and 61 in san francisco. best beach city will be to the

ultimate sacrifice. this weekend a help oriole ceremony was dedicated to the 100 salers and 7 marines from the uss san francisco killed in action in the 1942 battle. also honored all of the men who fought on the "uss san francisco" in its 17 major battles during world war ii. several veterans were on hand for the tribute. >> as years go by more and more people value the peace and freedom that we have. how we got it and how we keep it. veterans are the ones who paid the price. many are not here and many are. >> the "uss san francisco" was the first navy warship to be awarded the citation by president roosevelt in 1942. it is 5:05. from the mid 1970s to today.

california's population has grown 7 percent. its prison population has grown 700 percent. many families on the outside. a north bay group dedicated to help them. garvin thomas has their story. >> reporter: time is everything in prison. life inside measure simply by how long someone has been in, how long, if ever, until they get out. >> everyone have two words that they use to describe themselves? >> reporter: it makes a certain amount of sense then, for this group. children of parents in prison, time is a powerful gift. one that project avery strives to give. >> the length of relationship is really where we shine. >> reporter: for the past seven years, herb castillo has been executive director of project

avery, one of a handful of nonprofits in the country to focus exclusively of children of the incarcerated. >> one more time, breathe to the center, out to the other side. >> reporter: enrolling them as young as 8 years old and staying with them of them for the next ten years of their life no matter where that life takes them. >> the search for affordable housing, the need to be with an incarcerated parent, the breakdown causes this population to move around a lot. >> reporter: what project avery does with the children is easy to describe, difficult to quantify. simply put, avery gives the children experiences they wouldn't normally have in life. on this day, it's dance and brazilian martial arts in oakland's destiny arts center but there's also overnight camping trips and cross country skiing experiences. while avery does try to sneak life lessons into the fun, the

long and difficult recovery. jay gray, nbc new, moore, oklahoma. close to 5:13, the search conditions for a brain cancer patient. a volunteer pilot was flying 64-year-old frank am rosa and his wife, evelyn when the twin engine went down. the couple had been in boston so the frank could get treatment for brain cancer. the pilot and wife were killed. frank's body has not been found but is presumed dead. the pilot who flew them before the accident said frank made a lasting impact on him. >> he was a person who candidly i found a real affinity for. i really liked him on the spot. one of those people you meet and say, wow, this is a great guy. >> the national transportation safety board is investigating the cause of that attack. in london, two men were

arrested last wednesday accused of attacking lee rig bye with a meat cleaver and several knives on a busy street. the two suspects said it was in revenge for wars in muslim countries, six other people are accused of conspiracy to commit murder. u.s. secretary of state john kerry is overseas in africa and middle least. in the first official trip he celebrated the african union's 50th anniversary in ethiopia. at the conference, kerry spoke to an audience saying, quote, it's better to negotiate than continue violence. he's also open to negotiations with the taliban if they agree to certain ground rules. >> they agree that they will not engage in violence against other people and violence against other countries. they won't engage in terrorism. that they will not threaten afghanistan constitution, and so forth. so, if they meet those stan

disease. debbie martin died yesterday. martin is the younger steer of jolie's mother who died from ovarian cancer in 2007. martin's husband says his wife had the same brca 1 gene that jolie has but didn't know it until after her 2004 diagnosis. >> since angelina came up with the news about her double mass tech t tech tommy, debbie and i said if we had known, woo would have done exactly the same thing. it would have saved her life. >> so far jolie has not commented publicly on her aunt's death but shows the impact this horrible disease has on so many families. >> no doubt she's saved their lives. >> here we are talking about memorial day and barbecues and scheduled rain.

find your location and you can see about 4:00 p.m., closest to the coastline, that's where you have the best shot for getting any shower activity. we'll ramp that chance up between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. as the showers move onshore. and this system looks like it brings the most rainfall down to the south bay but not until this evening. we stop the clock again getting into tuesday morning. lingering shower activity but will quickly get out of here. should be a nice day tuesday. wednesday we'll hold steady with temps in the 70s, then things change. we have a big high temperature that will bring temperatures to 96 degrees saturday. we'll hold on to the 90s by sunday. today not so great for the beach but we'll get that great beach weather right here in the bay area. back you to. >> thanks, 5:19. bay area city consider a plan to combat the foreclosure crisis. they want to use eminent domain

with an open heart. >> she is not concerned about being excommunicated with the church for going through sunday's ceremony. she said becoming a priest is right for her and girls who will come after her in the catholic church. the vatican said women who are being priests committing a, quote, grave sin. flights resumed this week, ana's commercial flight follows test flights required after battery fires on board. they leveraged the service in january but because of the battery problems grounded flights six days later. assuming there's no additional issues, ana plan to resume dreamliner services between san jose and japan saturday. the first trains in san
