most we're sounding retreat. our enemies are all over the planet. ♪ god bless america" >> today a time of warning and celebration. last night's memorial day concert reminds us of american's bonds at time of war even when that war is changing. ceremonies happening here today, not just at arlington but also specific ceremonies for world war ii vets and vietnam vets and others, and we see live pictures coming out of car ling ton as they prepare for the president to lay that wreath in just about an hour and a half. >> always a great day for everyone to reflect and also teach their children. thank you very much. u.s. secretary of state john kerry is spending the holiday weekend overseas in africa and middle east. in the first official trip to africa as secretary of state he celebrated the african union's 50th anniversary in ethiopia before flying to jordan to attend a business conference.

at that conference kerry spoke to the audience saying, quote, it's better to negotiate than continue violence. he's also opened negotiations with the taliban if they agreed to certain ground rules. >> they agree that they will not engage in violence against other people, and violence against other countries. they won't engage in terrorism. that they will not threaten the afghanistan constitution and so forth. so, if they beat those standards. we believe we should sit down and explore. >> in his eighth day overseas, he'll be traveling to paris to talk with the russian foreign minister about syria before returning to the states. >> and in china president obama's national security adviser met with officials before chinese president visits the u.s. next week. the china's president and president obama are scheduled to meet to discuss issues including global economy, u.s. allegations

fires on board. san jose international airport launched dreamliner service in january. but because of those battery problems grounded flights just six days later. assuming there's no additional issue, ana intends to resume service on saturday. it is 6:36. east bay is considering a radical plan to combat foreclosure crisis. they want to use eminent domain to keep families in their homes. eminent domain is usually associated with government taking private property from people. under this plan, richmond seized underwater mortgages and work to refinance them under terms the home owners could afford. the plan is expected to face many legal challenges including arguments that it violates basic property rights. still ahead angelina jolie's aunt died from the disease the actress is taking action to prevent. >> she was a beautiful person.

welcome back. new video, only on nbc bay area of what appears to be a series of car crashes overnight in redwood city. in the past hour police confirming for us they are investigating a number of incidents along jefferson avenue. you can see two cars with rear end and side damage both up on the curb. the photographer on the scene said there's plastic parts from a number of these cars all up and down the street. investigators will have more

details for us later this morning. >> 6:44. just a couple hours ago we learned details of the one person who died in yesterday's horrific grash on highway 101 near burlingame. the bus crashed into the a car sending a lot of people to the hospital. why chp wants to hear from you. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, yes, if you were on southbound 101 early sunday morning near the broadway exit in burlingame, if you witnessed this crash they want to hear from you. in the meantime the husband in that crash, raul padilla is last reported in critical condition at stanford medical center and chp tells us he is facing arrest of the death of his wife, sarah klein who went by the stage name sparkly devil. she's well known not own in the bay area but throughout the world. she was killed when the car they were driving hit the center berm

and heading southbound in their direction was a party bus both vehicles collided head on killing the 36-year-old star from san mateo and critically injured her husband who i mentioned recovered here at stanford. >> at this point we know the driver and passenger was drinking the previous evening. we had not arrested them or applied any charges. once we find out what his level of intoxication was. then we'll be able to charge them with either felony dui and also possibly manslaughter. >> there were 18 people on that party bus. half of them were hurt but none of them seriously. reporting live, bob redell here in the bay. thank you, bob. san jose fire crews had to use the jaws of life to pull two people out of a car that slammed into a tree.

nbc bay area was the first on the scene at 3:00 this morning at the intersection of alan rock avenue and north white road down the street from james leicht high school. bothdi investigators said they were trapped inside and made it complicated. >> not only did the vehicle hit the tree, the tree landed on top of the vehicle. >> fire crews tell our photographer both victims have major injuries but are expected to survive. investigators say they don't know what caused this crash. >> a developing story in south bay right now. right now san jose police are investigating two separate shootings killing three people. the gunman still on the loose. just after 10:00 a man was shot at the intersection of hayes avenue and walnut blossom drive in san jose. the investigators say the man was shot at least once. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police have not release aid motive for the shooting. his death marks the city's 19th

homicide of the year. >> now, just a few hours earlier, two people were killed in a shooting in east san jose. it happened on reinhart drive near a coalkohl's department st. a neighbor said her son was friends with the victim who she identified as a 15-year-old boy. >> he was sweet. he hangs out with my son every day, they go places and talk to girls all day on phone. >> i believe there are witnesses. hopefully somebody out there saw it and can identify this person. >> police have not confirmed the ages of the victims and have not release aid motive for the shooting. 6:48 time to check the forecast as we give you a live look outside. golden gate bridge. look at that. not a lot of traffic. you can count the cars out there. a lot of people observing the holiday with the day off and they are anxious to get out.

county. you can still get outdoors until 3:00 p.m. even up in the santa rosa area. look at future cast. start the clock at 9:00 p.m. pushing past the sonoma county border at that point. by noon to 2:00 then is starts to get active. that's where the bulk of the moisture continues to spread to the south. at that point it will be draped across oakland. still mostly dry from santa cruz to san jose. as we start that clock for you at 6:00 p.m. that's when we'll start to get wet. showers will clear out. by tomorrow morning a little drizzle on the radar not expecting anything heavy. so the best beach city, santa cruz, 65 degree at 1:00 p.m. may mayber' headed to this game. beige bridge series o.co coliseum. giants taking on the oakland athletics. 60 degrees 1:00 p.m.

62 at 2:00 p.m. bring your jacket. it will probably be breezy. a start of showers maybe towards the end of the game. at 3:00, 4:00. thursday into friday look at changes headed our way. laura and marla. look at the temperatures driven by high pressure. so that means elevated fire danger. you still have time to get the space cleared out around your home if you live in any of the wooded areas. we want to make sure we're ready, staying two steps ahead of this year's fire season. back to you. >> very good advice. also good advice to stay away from canals. antioch police say they've found new clues this morning into a drowning death of a 13-year-old boy. investigators believe believe the boy's shoe ended up in the canal, when he went in to get it he slipped into the water.

his 10-year-old kusen said he tried to rescue the boy but realized the water was too powerful and ran to get help. crews pulled the body from the water two hours later. the canal was ten feet deep where the boy fell in and the current can run as much as 12 miles an haw. people are back home this morning after a bomb scare caused the evacuation of a peninsula neighborhood. the bomb squad was next to a apartment complex in mountainview yesterday evening. investigators say someone found a pressure cooker under a bush outside the lobby doors. the shopping center, apartment complex and surrounding area were evacuated for about three hours until the bomb squad reported the pressure cooker was open. investigators are trying to figure out what caused two vak ability apartment buildings to go up in flames. shelter hill apartments in millvale. about 100 people had to be evacuated from surrounding

buildings. firefighters contained those flames within about 40 minutes. firefighters tell us they were being renovated. >> pg&e says dirty power poles caught fire in san francisco and south san francisco. sunday morning. 5,000 homes lost power in all. a pg&e spokens woman said the fire started when fog and drizzle mixed with dust and pollution on lines make a mud-like substance. pg&e says it works year round to keep the lines clean. 6:53. as we've ben tling you. today is memorial day. and the cities across the area honoring veterans who served our country. y oakland the city's memborial day celebration will be held. in san francisco, a parade in

pre presidio at 10:30 and in san jose at 11:00 in oak hill park. and the vta will take part of a national moment of remembrance. today at 3:00 buses and light rail will stop service in a moment of silence. in an hour from now. athletes will show it's possible to escape from ail ka trez as part of the orca challenge. 300 brave participants will swim 1.5 miles and then run 7 miles across the city. the sharks are going on to game seven. in the series they've won all their home games. last night no exception. game seven tuesday night and the sharks will have to buck a trend. the sharks and kings met ten

removing a trailer that was being pulled behind the truck as it plunged into the river. wash dot said they pulled the traitor out because it was of little importance. the importance is the actual vehicles in the water. federal officials want to reserve those for their investigation and we'll see a giant excavator that's lying a big pair of scissors that will cut through the mangled steal. today we're told detours are expanded to help traffic. what about a fix? we're learning the next two, three weeks the department of transportation will put a temporary span in that gap right there. it's going to be a little less sophisticated than the bridge is right now and will hold fewer cars at a lower speed limit but that will help get traffic across until september. that's when a new permanent bridge will be placed in that space and try to get traffic running more regularly. that spot will be constructed
