statement that facebook just issued. it posted online by the vice president of global public policy and it says it has become clear that our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effective ly as we would like, particularly around issues of gender-based hate. the guidelines used by these systems have failed to capture the content that violates our standards. we need to do better, and we will. from activists and advertisers, and you may remember bay area congresswoman jackie spear alerted military brass about the marine facebook pages, making fun of sexual assault. now social media pages are targeting her. >> it's ball doing the right thing. and i don't think that's the right thing. so, i think that the military has a big job ahead of itself, cleaning up a very distort ed

function that's been allowed to last for a decade. >> reporter: spear says as long as they're not using taxpayer dollars they have a right to freedom of expression but is concerned that military personnel would be expressing gender discrimination attitude that is have no place in today's military. facebook said it is making a commitment to process more of these complaints and, if an egregious post gets through their system, they're saying that women's advocacy groups will have a direct line to facebook to alert them. reporting live in menlo park. buses carrying more than 100 parents, teachers and students will take off from the south bay headed toward our state capital. their goal? to ask lawmakers for more help with public education. bob redell is live with what they hope to get out of this trip. good morning, bob.

>> reporter: good, marla. buses will be leaving around 6:15 for what will be the 11th annual trip of its kind, to fight for education, both for children and adults. when i say adults, i'm talking about at the college level. santa clara supervisor will be leading about 135 teachers, students and parents from sacramento today to meet with lawmakers. their goal is to convince legislators to not make any more cuts to education and to talk about how new funds should be spent. those buses will be returning here later tonight. this is a day trip. again, the 11th annual of its kind. reporting live here in san hojo, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> this trip comes on heels of a new report showing schools in the silicon valley failing latino students. only 22% of latino students are

algebra sufficient. compare that to 57% of white students and 76% of asian. the report also shows close to one in five of these kids not ready for high school or college. the report was issued by a group called innovative public schools. it is funded by the walton family foundation and promotes education reform. it is 5:04. disneyland reopens following a bomb scare last night. toon town was evacuated after people heard a loud bang coming from trash cans. that area was closed for several hours. investigators believe the blast was caused by an apparent dry ice type of bomb. they will review surveillance video today to hopefully to learn more. nobody was hurt in that incident. follow-up to a story we first brought you yesterday morning. speed was the official cause of this crash and all five victims

were high school students. the crash happened monday in newport beach. orange county sheriff's department says the car hit a tree, split in half, then caught fire. four of the victims were 17 years old. the other just 16. all were students in the irvine unified school district. san ramon man is nursing a sore back and scratches after a tree fell on top of him. rick moman and his wife were working around the yard when the tree, four stories tall, came toppling down. he was trapped under the top branches of the tree and took him a couple of minutes to wiggle his way out. the tree did cause extensive damage to the house, which now they're repairing to sell. >> at least everyone is okay there. >> that's the good news. taking a look at our wednesday forecast. we're getting ready for some heat to kick in, in the bay area. >> right. ta's going to crank around here, before you know t marla and laura, good morning to you. good morning to you at home. we'll start with the clearest

shot we have, san francisco. mostly cloudy conditions in the south bay. those clouds will actually clear quicker this morning, up in the north bay, than what we're expecting down here. i'll show you why in a minute. nice and mild with a full blanket of clouds overhead. especially your inland cities. 56 in san francisco where you're not getting your cloud cover. 60 here in san hojose. wherever you see that white shading, cloud cover is the thickest. it's not yet lowered to the surface. visibilities are not dropping off just yet in the higher elevations. mike and i will be tracking that for you. stop that clock at 10:00 am. you can see at that point, mostly cloudy conditions northward to san francisco. then between 10:00 and 2:00, those clouds clear from north to south. by 2:00 pm, you'll see mostly sunny conditions here in san jose. you'll have to wait for the sunshine. it will be clear quicker in echo land than the south bay for today. 65 inland at noon. we'll round out the day with really comfortable weather.

76 inland. bayside 70. at the coast, 62 degrees. tack on an additional 10, that's where we're headed tomorrow. and the heat keeps on coming as we get into the weekend. let's check on the roads. people are back to work this morning, mike. >> good morning, yes. you have to get back to work. tomorr some folks finishing work. we have another issue for pleasanton. we'll talk about that in a second. the southbound side, headlights, steady stream past the coliseum. that's the direction of road work right now. we'll look at the map as well, coming out of downtown past five minutes, everyone much better from 980 toward the coliseum, stretches of yellow. there were crews there. they're cloer from the area. we saw slow moving. crews likely getting out over the roadway and to their stations. watch for a little slowing for the time being. just another five or ten minutes. meanwhile, eastbound 580 slows out of castro valley, dublin grade and reports of a stall.

too much to be caused by just one stall reportedly blocking the slow lane. still we know both issues, eastbound slowing and the disable disabled vehicle blocking just partly west -- eastbound 58 0 past 680. smoother drive for your commute direction, west 580 through livermore and 84 through livermore. no problems in through sunol. smooth drive there. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. flashing lights over on the right-hand side. there were no lanes blocked. i was checking it out. nothing reported for chp as well. we'll watch the span. crews should start to move, overnight construction crews in the next couple of minutes. >> they can go to bed now. just approved targeting 911 pranksteres. stock market is doing incredibly well and tim cook says the a word, and it's not apple. downtown san jose, as it

this could become more problematic, especially over your open water bridges, bay bridge throughout the next couple of hours. we're watching that for you this morning right now not looking too bad. we stop the clock for you at 10:00 am. at that point, most of the cloud cover will be confined to the peninsu peninsula, livermore at that point. between 10:00 and 3:00, sun comes out. it stays out, until about 8:30 this time of year as our days are longer and we progress into summertime. first official day of summer, the 21st of this month. this is what we're talking about for today. the heat is on. it stays on into the weekend. temperatures soar, 15 to 20 degrees. that means that coastline will get nice and clear. we are going to see those dry, downsloping northerly winds return. elevated fire danger friday, saturday and all the way into sunday. highs today, though, wow! what a beautiful day we have shaping up, especially when i show you the seven day. 76 today. comfortable conditions in livermore. by tomorrow, we're talking about a return of the 90s. make sure you have that summer

documents before 2006, the company didn't have guidelines or offer employee training for hazardous waste management and disposal. toxic materials were discarded in trash bins or poured into the local sewer system. the arkansas-based company will now pay a combined penalty of more than $110 million. 5:18. a new bill expanding who can perform abortions has been passed and is on its way to the state senate. it would allow nondoctors such as nurse practitioners, midwives to perform abortions in the first trimester, involves using a tube to terminate the pregnancy. the bill could increase the risk to patients, critics say. supporters say data from the trial showed doctors and nonphysicians performed the procedure with low error rates. 5:18. a new bill is hoping to put an end to pranks known as swatting. last night state assembly

unanimously approved an anti-swatting bill, imposing a fine of up to $2,000 and a year in jail for people who make those false 911 calls. it's now going to the senate, which has approved similar legislation before. the bill would also boost penalties if swatting calls result in bodily harm. this morning, nike has cut ties with lance armstrong's cancer charity live strong. it turn ed a little yellow wris band into a symbol for cancer survivors. together they helped raise more than $100 million for that foundation. nike dropped its personal sponsorship with armstrong last october after it was revealed he was the ringleader of his team's doping program. >> pretty symbolic in a whole new way now. 5:19. bay area's own boston bombing survivor tells his story. reunited after almost 70 years. how a world war ii era diary

game but you don't want to hit at&t park and all that traffic in the city, you can catch it here on nbc bay area. we'll be taking you inside the park starting at 7:00. first let's check that drive with mike. >> going to get the game. folks traveling across the bay. fans around the bay heading over there. the bay bridge toll plaza, this evening's commute will be extra heavy. looking toward fremont, 880 southbound with headlights streams across that automall park sign. more traffic flow. we'll show you also the tri-valley, more traffic flowing. and also 84 through livermore itself. the big issue, we still have reports of a disabled vehicle east 580 not at the dublin interchange. it should have move d out of th slow lane and, in fact, been cleared over the last few minutes. we'll track that counter commute slowing that's a little unusual for folks through the area.

ing a world war ii museum in new orleans. laura mae davis found the diary of her late boyfriend, thomas cotton jones. it was on display. with it was a note from jones with special instructions for whomever found that diary. >> i looked at it. it said, if this diary is lost, it should be sent to laura mae davis, winslow, indiana. well, that was a jolt. it was a shock to see that it was there and it was supposed to have been given to me 69 years ago. and i didn't even know it was there. >> can you imagine the coincidence of seeing that? davis says she actually bought the diary as a gift to jones when he enlisted in the marines after the two graduated in may of 1941. the museum let her read it, gave her a copy, dvd copy of its contents but they say they couldn't let her take the keepsake, because it had been donated by the jones family. >> i don't think the family would have minded.

bay will take off for a special trip to sacramento. today in the bay's bob redell is live with where the group will soon board buses to head to the state capital. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. this will be the 11th trip of its kind to sacramento to talk with legislators to fight for better education funding and where they want to put the money. they want to fight for that as well. dave cortese and the silicon valley will lead 125 teachers, students and parents to meet with legislators. the goal is to convince them not to make any more cuts to education and how new funds should be spent. resident here of san jose, bob razun, you have a specific request you want to make to lawmakers. what is it? >> we're looking to gain support for interactive textbooks in the schools. >> reporter: and is this coming

reporting live in menlo park, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. 55-year-old man on the peninsula is in jail this morning, accused of attacking his landlord with bear repellant. steven plummer attacked the manager last night about noise they were making at a belmont complex. that's when officers say plummer hit the landlord and used a stronger pepper spray also used as bear repellant. he is being charged with assault, misuse of tear gas and possessi possessing tear gas. thieves stole motors right off boats in san francisco. someone cut through cables and stole five motors from pier 40 monday night. the motors belonged to the bay area association of disabled sailors or baads. without those boats, veterans with disabilities who sale with

the group, like christina rube-key cannot hit the water. she is unable to use her arms or legs and sails on a specifically designed boat, moving a joystick with her chin. >> it was awesome. i thought it was great i had the ability to sail, given my disability. it's really not, obviously, very expected. so i thought it was a really incredible opportunity to engage in a really fun sport and engage actively. >> police say they found the motors, but it's uncloer ear if they're still in working condition. fixing one of those boats is expected to cost a few thousand dollars. the state supreme court will hear arguments over who can administer insulin shots to kids with diabetes. right now the law allows teachers, administrators and nurses to give those insulin shots. the california nurses association wants to change that so that only certified nurses can give the sometimes life-saving shot but parents and the american diabetes association argue that school

employees who are trained to give the shots should be allowed to continue to, because many schools only have one nurse or none at all. 5:37. we are learning more this morning about the problem on the yet-to-open span of the bay bridge. we'll give you a live look right now at the bridge. hundreds of bolts used to attach a railing for the bike path broke because caps were not installed properly. experts are calling it a basic mistakes. crews welded the bolts firmly in their slots rather than leaving room for natural expansion that happens in hot weather, causing it to break. caps have been removed and the bolts replaced. this latest mishap comes as the metropolitan transportation commission holds a special meeting today, expecting an update on broken bolts and damaged steel rods. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren.

>> chances are, you probably are already thinking about the weekend. you made it to wednesday. good morning to you. want to show you the skies over the bay area. usually, we see quite a bit of a difference when it comes to your inland cities versus those right by the water. this, of course, san francisco. mostly cloudy here at this point. marine layer will push all the way inland. yes, indeed, that is the case. you can see from san hojose, sa overcast sky. these clouds will thicken up as we head over the next couple of hours and they'll clear out as we head throughout the second half of the day. we will not see clear sunshine in san jose until 2:00 this afternoon. here is why. those showers that came through yesterday, high pressure now moves in. as that big ridge of high pressure comes in, we see a quieter pattern. the winds drop off. once those winds drop off, you can see that from your buoys here. the fog settles in. over the past two hours, we've dropped 18-mile-per-hour wind gusts to 7-mile-per-hour wind gusts. that's a good sign. we'll see a really nice day today. 58 in san jose, 57 in livermore.

by noon today, plenty of 60s. cool ocean air not making its way all the way through the delta, though. it will be much warmer in the extreme east bay. 80 for fairfield versus 72 in the south bay, san jose. your full forecast in a few moments. first, we want to check that drive with mike. >> good morning. folks, we'll take you at this look, to give you at least an angle of what back up there is right now. fast track, no problems. you'll slow a little bit as you should for safety sake through the toll plaza. no metering lights. smoother drive across the span still. on the approach down the east shore freeway to the top of your screen, west 80. no delays through the berkeley curve. out of san francisco as you're approaching treasure island. the maze itself moves smoothly. we do have this. heavier traffic out of antioch. heavier slowing across the antioch bridge, into pittsburg and bay point. westbound highway 4. you expect this area to be slow but not quite as slow as our

already pretty good news for our local girls. >> that's right. two of them, number 24 and number 20. they both advanced as of this morning by spelling their words correctly. there's new words. number one, kids won't advance out of rounds two and three if they don't spell words correctly. also, this is a big one, now they've got a vocabulary test. you're not going to see this on tv. they're not going to be doing it on stage but as part of that computerized test they do in advance to qualify and then to move into the semi finals, these kids will have to take one, if not two vocabulary tests. it will be half of their score. so these organizers say instead of just making sure the kids can spell, they also want to know that they know the definitions of these words. makes it a lot tougher to advance. here is an example of what they might see on that test. the word indocile.

nomination last year. train derailment near baltimore. take a look at this cell phone video. large cloud of black smoke and flames. you also heard the explosion after a train hit a garbage truck and went off its tracks as the driver slowly approaches the track site, you see that huge ball of fire erupt. hazmat team was called to the scene but released after it didn't find any sort of toxic inh inhalants found at that site. ntsb says it's not clear what the truck was doing at the private crossing. the truck driver was seriously hurt. everyone else is okay. >> devastating tornado in oklahoma continues. release efforts will get a helping hand from some major star power tonight. country music star and "the voice" judge blake shelton spearheading a concert and telethon. he and his wife, myrrh airanda lambert, will host the heeling in the hardland concert in oklahoma city tonight. many other celebrities are expected to make appearances

energy. temperatures will warm up quickly. 15 to 20 degrees as we get into this upcoming weekend. and as we head out through next week, staying hot as this ridge will not break down potentially until the end of next week. dry stretch of warm, hot weather. that means the coastline will stay nice and clear. all the low clouds you have to deal with this morning. we'll lose half of that low cloud cover by tomorrow. by the weekend, no low clouds to start the day. 70s and 80s even at the beach. 76 degrees for today. not today. livermore looks great today. if you want to make those outdoor plans, you live inland. and that hot weather keeps you indoors, today is your day to get outdoors. this is the last day of the 70s. as we get into tomorrow, 80s and 90s return friday. mid to upper 90s saturday and sunday. monday and tuesday, starting to cool off a touch. staying warmer than average this time of year. like i said before, we'll get to that giants forecast coming up.

they're taking on the a's, a lot of people rooting for one team or another. that means a lot of traffic in the city today. >> all those folks from out of town, across the bay. looking over toward that bay bridge will be the focus this evening. south bay, this is the focus. northbound 101, just north of 680. traditional build, traditional first burst coming around the area. we'll watch it sort itself out, kicks in 6:15, 6:20. here is the focus right now, transition 880 and 101. we'll watch this along the south bay side. also through the tri-valley, more slowing. this dublin interchange not a big deal. good amount of slowing up toward livermore and also in livermore. this is not so bad as far as the volume of traffic. two incidents reported, roadway hazard. sounds like there's debris in the roadway somewhere between dublin exits and the dublin interchange there. we'll track that northbound 680 be on the letter. i'm tracking that for you as

biggest jump in seven years. it is the third straight month of positive housing news, especially in cities hardest hit by the recession. >> we have very high demand and very low supply. that means home pces will rise very quickly for the foreseeable future. >> jobless numbers will show whether employers are feel iings confident as their workers. housing numbers were phenomenal, not just here in the bay area, but nationwide. >> our ultra local economy and how well it's doing. kay shiler said the san francisco market is doing well. nationwide numbers are important, too. that will be a measure of our overall economy. if we're going to do well we need everyone to do well. you may not see this news that marla said, that prices have risen the most in seven years as a good thing. do keep in mind that higher house prices make the world more

mobi mobile. that fellow stuck in his home because it was under water, couldn't take a new, higher paying job somewhere else can take that job now. mobile americans are good for the economy. they're good for you, even if you are a renter. president obama says he will discuss hacking with the president of china when the two meet in southern california next week. here, you see the president meeting with his national security adviser. the washington post said monday that the chinese have been hack ing our most sophisticated weapons systems. speaking of china, it looks like a chinese company is buying smithfield, largest producer of pork in the united states for nearly $5 billion. that is, if the government allows it. there were already concerns smithfield was too big as an american company. the chinese interest, laura and marla, doesn't seem to be about making money off of us, the grocery shoppers, but rather securing safe pork supply for chinese customers. their system distribution safety is a disaster. best way to solve that may be to buy an american company. >> very interesting.
