moments. plus we have a lot of activity over by the oakland coliseum, the latest on the lane closures and how the slow nimitz drive is starting to clear. and this is a live look outside the city by the way, still very dark on this thursday. we'll check the forecast with christina on this thursday may 30th. this is "today in the bay". >> good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us. i'm lawia garcia-cannon. >> good morning i'm marla tellez in for jon kelly. >> a man was hit by a train in san francisco. officials say the man was struck at mission bay drive near the san francisco cal train station just before midnight. he was taken to the hospital but his condition is still not known this morning. service was delayed for about 30 minutes and about 50 people were on board the train at the time.

no one else was hurt, though. it's unclear why the man was on the track in the first place. a wanted sex offender from san jose is behind bars today thousands of miles away from home. 34-year-old nigel garcia was arrested in north carolina last week. police say he had been living under a different name for about two years working as a mechanic and volunteering as a youth baseball coach. he even has a wife and young daughter in north carolina as well according to officials. garcia was wanted in san jose because police say he never registered as a sex offender. he's expected to be extradited back to california. new this morning at 5:01, walnut creek police released a photo of a man they say tried to rob a woman at nordstrom's just before 9:00 last night. the woman entered the second story of the garage at broadway plaza. the man came up from behind and grabbed her. police say he grabbed her purse

but was scared off when another woman came by. the woman was not hurt. an emotional crowd in east palo alto as the city deals with an increase in crime and gang violence. more than 150 people confronted police chief ron davis last night, angry about eight shootings in eight days earlier this month including one death. the chief has declared a crime emergency, but some say there's not enough being done. >> to be present here, to be present there. we don't just want to know oh they're at starbucks. how about asking for help in mountain view, how about asking for help where they don't have nothing to do obviously. >> i think they're trying. what i'm hearing is it's not good enough so we'll keep trying and try to get better. >> police arrested 27 people since declaring the crime emergency. chief says the result is among an internal struggle among a local gang.

and in south san jose police and neighbors joined to make the community safer. dozens gathered for a crime prevention meeting days after a violent weekend, three homicides in the span of four hours has many people on edge. last night's meeting looked at how to prevent armed robberies, burglaries and how to be a good witness. 5:03. this morning, bay area investigators are looking for more possible victims of a former high school football coach accused of sex crimes against children. "today in the bay"'s" bob redel joins us. >> reporter: his name is barron edwards, he's in jail in martinez on a $2.5 million bail amount charged with three counts of rape and lewd and lascivious acts on children 15 years of age and younger. the sheriff's office hasn't said

whether his alleged victims were students at the school. the 51-year-old edwards coached varsity football between '04 and '05. the word is out because they believe he might have assaulted other children. they're asking anyone with that information to contact investigators. bob redell, "today in the bay". santa clara police need your help catching a package thief. officers say the man took the pack acfrom the front steps of the home nearly two weeks ago. surveillance video shows him approaching a home on a blue mountain bike, wearing a white helmet, carrying a dark colored nike duffel bag. south bay health officials are drawing attention to a growing problem this morning, the problem tuberculosis. if you live in the south bay you have a higher chance of catching this deadly disease than any other metropolitan area in the nation. so the centers for disease control and other agencies are

tackling this issue. "today in the bay" is live where the california tuberculosis control organization is gathered today. >> reporter: they'll gather in a couple of hours to talk about the issues joined by campbell congressman mike honda to address the concerns. if you don't live in the south bay experts say you should be concerned because california has the highest number of tb in the nation. tb kills about 1.4 million worldwide every year and there's a drug resistant to tb posing newel challenges for the experts. doctors say you have to control tb in other nations because of the increased globalization and so many americans traveling abroad. tuberculosis is spread when the person who has the disease coughs and because tb is spread through the air it's a global

concern and it's also a local one. >> i think that our ambassadors overseas ought to be talked to about health protocol as part of the visa process. >> locally the public health director says cases involving his patients here in the santa clara county have become more complicated over the years, so it is important to get ahead of the issue now. congressman honda will be receiving an award for attacking this issue both locally and globally. we're live in san jose. his mother said he was the light that could brighten the darkest the rooms. 21-year-old dylan mitchell graduate in 2010 was hit by a garbage truck while riding his

bike in san francisco last thursday. he died at the scene. mitchell had just moved to the city to start an internship. a 6-year-old boy in desperate need of a bone transplant will get a pick me up from celebrity. actor and comedian george lopez will visit eduardo gialva in the hospital via skype. he is battling leukemia and has been in the hospital for the past couple months while his family and classmates continue to search for a bone marrow match. >> let's hope they find one soon for that little boy. meteorologist christina loren, colder start but warmer later on. >> good day shaping up. good morning to you. i want to start with this live picture, this is san francisco. i'm not sure what this light is about but it continuously changes color. it will be green in a few minutes. we'll figure out what this is about but i wanted to show you

the sky above that awkward light and no low clouds to start the day in san francisco. we are going to see some move on shore as we head throughout the next few hours but right now beautiful start to the day. 50 in livermore, 49 in sunnyvale and 50 in santa cruz so winds are not much of a factor but they'll play a big factor as of this afternoon. futurecast you're looking for the warmer colors. 11:00 a.m. not that bad, 20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts but the oranges and the reds come in along the marin county coastline, it's going to be pretty blustery. 30 to 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts as high pressure moves in, a tight pressure gradient, the numbers not up by much, the real warmup starts tomorrow. 81 in livermore. 77 san jose and 68 degrees in san francisco. so i'll show you how much warmer

breaking news we're following this morning at 5:12, a warehouse with a pot grow caught fire this morning in oakland. crews quickly put it out t broke out about 4:30 this morning. at 51st avenue and 12th street. no word on any injuries or the extent of damage or even a cause at this point but the oakland fire department tells us a marijuana grow was inside that warehouse. we have a crew headed to the scene. we'll bring you more information as soon as it comes to us.

tesla ceo elon musk is found himself plastered on page six of "the new york daily times." the billionaire is spending a lot of time with actress cam ross diaz. they got to know one another earlier ben diaz bought a tesla. the paper says she's been making a lot of trips from los angeles to palo alto. >> maybe she's trying to see how long that charge goes. musk explaining his falling out with mark zuckerberg. the tesla ceo part of zuckerberg's action committee a few days before he quit. >> ironic because musk is the most successful immigrant of his generation yet he leads a pact. the digital conference saying what we had suspected he wanted the political group to focus on immigration and he grew

uncomfortable when zuckerberg's group started to support politicians whose positions musk could not agree with. forward u.s. supported for instance a candidate's push to build this keystone pipeline across the u.s. in exchange for that candidate's support of immigration reform. musk is an environmentalist and said he could not support that. the securities and exchange commission on wednesday finds the amex exchange $10 million for botching the facebook ipo. for hours we didn't know who owned what shares or how much. the sec says the nasdaq knew it had a problem but went ahead with trading anyway. let's check the markets, bertha coombs is live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, bertha. >> good morning, scott. you know how the markets love tuesdays these days. they didn't love wednesday. the dow giving back all of those gains and we're looking at a

lower start at this hour, we'll get an awful lot of data, just in about 15 minutes or so we'll get a read on first quarter gdp, growth in the first three months of the year, the economic growth here in the u.s. also the weekly unemployment we get thursday and pending home sales so that could temper the outlook for this morning but the dow will start at 15,30, after falling 106 points on wednesday. the nasdaq losing 21 points to 3467. you know something else elon musk talked about last night, scott, he says he wants to take spacex and create travel to mars. the funny thing you can get to mars, the problem is getting back. >> that's the bigger thing to solve, no place to raise your kids, thank you very much. elon muss something all over the place. i don't think this got enough attention it says a significant number of solar panels installed here in america may have

problems. "the times" found the panels almost always made in china start to fail just two years into their 25-year lifespan. you recall china practically ran us out of the solar panel building industry thanks to billions of dollars in government support from beijing. now that support is drying up. "the times" says those manufacturers in china are cutting costs using bad materials. this means in some case we're putting junk on our roofs. they talked to solar city, musk's company. the company has not seen any problems with their panels but other companies are saying 20% of the panels we're getting from china are defective so we have a crisis coming ahead if this is true. >> thank you very much, scott. what doesn't elon musk own. >> it's not like we're just doing musk news but he happens to have his hands in so many amazing projects. thank you very much. meteorologist christina loren, it's thursday, almost the weekend. sprint to the warmup.

we've dropped 2 to 12 to 14 degrees especially in the north bay we lose those clouds and lose that blanket of warmth so today pull out the jacket for the first part of the day, you can ditch it by about noon as temperatures will already be in the widespread 60s, rounding out the day in the 80s and the warmest cities across the bay. winds will pick up as well as an area of high pressure really starts to move in. we have elevated fire danger to worry about as we get into this upcoming weekend. we'll let you know whether or not we have a red flag warning in place for saturday and sunday. we have the dry downsloping winds moving into the bay area again. 81 degrees for livermore, 76 in fremont and 68 degrees in san francisco so not too bad just yet. the heat really cranks as we get into friday, 90 degrees inland, we'll be at 96 by saturday and even on sunday staying unseasonably warm as we finish off the weekend, meet back on money, a cooler coastline. 5:18 that drive is heating up.

mike is watching it for you. >> it's not necessarily a bad thing right now because it's only 5:19 so folks just starting to get on the roadway and we see the sensors adjust throughout the south bay. no big drama. southbound 880 we saw a lot of slowing and crews cleared and so has the slowing. we were down a couple of lanes as we travel from brokaw toward 237. the pavement has cured and there's no more slowing toward 237, that's good news because the morning commute just starting to kick off. building a little tiny bit through the trivalley, easy drive eastbound and only just a little slowing out of the altamont past. pittsburgh and bay point showing a slow as well, we'll give you a live look across the bay on the bay bridge and a nice view of

the cars, upper deck moving smoothly into san francisco just starting to build, lower deck no problems out of the city and a smooth drive around the pay. we'll end with this shot and send it back to you. we may not know until mid-july whether the new span of the bridge will be ready to open on labor day weekend. broken steel rods beneath the bridge's deck that connect the deck to sheer keys supposed to make the bridge safer in the event of an earthquake. cal transis not sure how long it will take to make and install the parts. test something under way to 2,000 bolts so make sure they can withstand decades of wear and tear. sewer rates for residents in san carlos will go up 67% over the next three years. the city council approved the increase this week. the flat rate for homes will jump more than $170 july 1st with an additional hike next

welcome back. live at the south bay, sun is coming up over the hills there, a nice shot, still all quiet in the south bay as we get your thursday started. it's 5:23. some palo alto city leaders want their city council to be smaller. the current city council has nine members but the vice mayor

and two councilwomen want to cut that number to seven and want to extend the term limit for council members from two consecutive terms to three. the group says other bay area cities roughly the same size have smaller councils. they'll discuss the issue at their next meeting monday. finding lost or stolen property just got easier thanks to pinterest. police introduced its lost and found items tuesday. the majority of the items are bikes but they have a much better chance of reuniting owners with their property. if you think one is yours, be ready to show your i.d. and proof you own the item. that's very interesting way of using -- >> innovative. meteorologistcally tina loren we saw the gorgeous shot in the south bay, looks like the sunrise is happening. >> earlier and earlier as we transition into the summertime months, our days are getting

the peninsula traffic flows nicely northbound past university through 101, headlights southbound, no milli metering lights yet. heading over to the peninsula we have a smooth drive across the san mateo bridge showing here on the foster city side, a little haze in the air but visibility fine. no problem with the dumbarton and bay bridge either. guests at walt disney resort in orlando no longer have to keep track of tickets and cards. they'll wear a wristband. the magic band will use radio frequency technology to connect guests to everything the park offers. park goers will have to tap the band at a touch point to enter the park, get into their hotel room or buy food and souvenirs. disney plans to launch magic

the investigation. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the sheriff put the word out about this because they believe the man who used to coach football here at kennedy high in richmond might have sexually assaulted other children. with more information about barron edwards anyone with information come forward. deputies arested this 51-year-old man last week, was charged with three counts of rape and lewd and lascivious acts of children 15 years of age and younger. still in jail in martinez on $2.5 million bail amount. edwards coached varsity football at kennedy high between 2004 and 2005. the sheriff's office has not said whether his alleged victims were ever students at this school. reporting live in richmond, bob redell, "today in the bay". the driver involved in a deadly crash on memorial day is expected to be formally charged today. paul diaz is in jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and

rub. police say he was driving a green mustang when it collided with a honda in koma early monday morning. three of diaz's passengers died in the crash. the driver of the other car was not seriously hurt. officers say diaz ran away from the scene but then turned himself in to police a few hours later. south bay police are looking to catch a pair of burglars who broke into a home in sunnyville. look at the surveillance pictures, pretty clear. the two men broke into the home through an unlocked window in the middle of the day last friday and stole jewelry. the men reportedly took off in a newer model red four-door sedan. the two member were posing as magazine salesmen in the area. if you have any information on the crime call the sunnyvale police department. tesla's ceo elon musk says you'll soon be able to drive your pricey model s from new york to l.a. thanks to a network of super charging stations along

the way. scott mcgrew this is another step forward for tesla. >> reporter: assume anyone who can afford a model s can afly coast to coast but if you wanted to, you can do it. right now there are nine of these in existence, one set is in california allows you to drive from san francisco to l.a., the other from new york city to washington, d.c.. musko was speaking at the "wall street journal" all things, the conference, that's why he's in the news so much this morning. he also said the company was about three years away making another model of tesla something that was more affordable for the rest of us though affordable is relative. cheap tesla would still be $30,000. chevy introduced the spark ev, just a lease for $199 a month, could be less than 20,000 to buy with the tax break. it's a rebadged korean vehicle and gets far less range than the

teslas do, more like a leaf. it is competition as we see in the electrical industry heat up. >> 5:34. california has one of the highest rates of tuberculosis in the country, the biggest area of concern is right here in silicon valley. it's something health officials want to change. damian trujillo joins us live to discuss the issue. >> reporter: good morning the numbers are high in the south bay. in fact they're high across the state, that's why those experts are going to be here today at the doubletree in san jose to address those concerns. the south bay which includes san jose, sunnyvale and santa clara has the highest tb rate of any metropolitan area in the country and california as a state continues to have the highest number of cases compared to every other state. that is why the experts are convening here today worldwide tb kills about 1.4 million

worldwide. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay". drivers on the peninsula will notice a large plume of smoke. no need to worry. the palo alto fire department scheduled two prescribed burns at the arastradero reserve at the palo alto hills golf and country club. if all goes as planned the burns will start at 9:00 this morning and cover nine acres. crews from woodside, santa clara county and cal fire will be on scene as well. >> hopefully when that all clears up you're going to get a good look at the forecast and actually the wind speed is what you're talking about this morning, christina. >> yes, laura. we have some wind out there this morning but they're very wise to get that prescribed burn done early because the winds are the calmest. they'll pick up as we head throughout the day. yesterday we had whipping winds in the south bay. as the sun starts to drop off those winds will pick up and

a dozen students in the finals broadcast on live tv tonight. she's a middle schooler from sandsa san ramon. she spelled and did well on the written test. that was the downfall for nina conacala from cupertino. she spelled everything on stage well but did not do well on the written and computerized portion of the test. that's what's getting some of the kids thisser yoo, not only are they tested before the on stage spelling bee but they have a new vocabulary section so they have to spell the words and know what they mean, she handwrote 40,000 words in her own notebook, her own sort of personal dictionary in preparation for this. unfortunately, did not make that cut for today, and that just really goes to show you how incredibly smart all of these kids are, even those who have been eliminated, just really

incredibly smart. it's an honor for them to come here. tonight we'll be watching out for number 24. >> thank you so much. 5:43, new this morning police say more tests need to be done on two letters mailed to new york mayor michael bloomberg that were apparently laced with the deadly poison ricin. investigators say both letters made references to gun laws. mayor bloomberg has been outspoken about the need for gun control. the people who initially came in contact with the letters show no symptoms to exposure to the poison. the three officers did experience minor systems. after the deadly tornado in the city of moore, pascal vermont works as a clinical psychologist and specializes in grief counseling. she'll meet with some of the victims who are coping with the loss of homes, family members and friends.

>> to look at people realizing this actually happened, the reality has sunk in and how do they pull themselves together to move on. >> vermont says her most important role is to be a friend to people she meets and help them understand how to deal with their feelings. she's worked with red cross in several disaster areas in the past including hurricane isaac and the earthquake in haiti. it will be an emotional day for the community of moore, oklahoma. crews are expected to begin tearing down what's left of plaza towers elementary school. that school was nearly reduced to rubble during last week's ef5 tornado. seven children were killed inside the school, many of them trapped inside a flooded basement. officials say they plan to rebuild plaza towers and nearby briarwood elementary school but this time both schools will have proper storm shelters. the victims of that tornado will soon get new aid thanks to some of the biggest names in country music.

influence all the way to oakland but you see where you get that cutoff not going to make its way to the trivalley. 83 degrees in concord versus 76 in fremont and of course you get to the coast as per usual the cooler it gets. 68 degrees in san francisco but everybody is going to be downright hot as we take you into this upcoming weekend. saturday into sunday, 90s on the way, we'll be in the 80s as we get into monday and tuesday, so leveling off a touch but staying rather warm around here. mike you know when the weather heats up, the motorcyclists they come out in abundance. >> even though motorcycle safety month is just about over, doesn't mean you have to not worry about motorcycle safety. you really got to be careful, tougher to see in visibility so everybody has to get that out. 101 northbound underneath the 680/280 interchange, beautiful sun coming up in the sky here and looking at a nice flow of traffic. northbound 101 only has this segment flowing from 680 to 880.

nothing unusual about this flow through the south bay, 880 shows a little slowing southbound. 55 at the worst spots and north 87 it will show slowing. right now it's parallel, monterrey highway showing surface congestion. 880 through hayward and coming off of 238 headed toward the san mateo bridge. let me give you the view of the san mateo bridge as we look at the live shot from our camera we have this equipment moving around so this view a little bit impeded but we see westbound traffic moves smoothly. i'll keep my head down in case they move it, got to be careful. foster city side smooth drive toward the peninsula. we'll end with the bay bridge toll plaza backing up but the metering lights are not on yet.

it's kind of looking to diversify as a matter of policy. the "wall street journal" says apple will use factories in taiwan owned by foxcon's competitor pegatron which already makes the ipad mini. foxconn will still be apple's biggest manufacturer. just a few minutes ago apple announced a lower priced ipod, the $229 ipad touch has less storage than previous models which allows apple to bring down the price. apple shares this morning at $444. we got the weekly jobless claims a few minutes ago, they look normal. economists look at gdp numbers they released a while back and said those are too high, they revised them downward. the economy grew less quickly than we thought. the folks at san francisco's word nix, an online dictionary did a study looking at what
