good afternoon. diane is off today. we are on an hour earlier than usual to make way for an nfl playoff game coming up at 5:00. a grass fire in south san jose. you see the smoke there. that smoke can be seen for miles. the fire is burning along story road along i-280. the fire department is tweeting out updates and pictures on the fire. crews seem to be having a difficult gaining control at least at first. a few minutes ago we heard via tweet that the fire department is gaining ground on the fire and they are battling extremely dry conditions out there and hot temperatures. we have a crew headed to the scene and we will bring you an

update as soon as we get one. we go to a developing story in the midwest. oklahoma city's airport re-opened this morning after a tornado ripped through the area yesterday. passengers and workers went into tunnel to wait out the storm. airport officials have no estimate of the damage yet, and meantime families are picking up the pieces from the latest storm that killed at least nine people, one of the hardest hit communities was union city, and that's why jay gray is tonight with more. >> reporter: there are sounds that have become too familiar across the midwest plains. echos of a day after. >> you never think it could happen to you. >> until it does. >> until it does. >> reporter: it happened in central oklahoma at least three times in the last two weeks, violent attacks from mother nature. >> a large tornado. a large tornado right there. >> reporter: friday night several funnels dipped in and out of the clouds at times, and

multiple twisters on the ground chewing up everything in their path. tornados so intense that they rattled even veteran storm chasers. >> 9 out of 10. very nervous. the only way i would be more nervous is if we were actually in the tornado. >> for survivors who begin the difficult process of piecing together lives scattered for miles, the emotional round of scars from the round of storms is just as deep as the physical scars. >> but resolve comes for many, what they have been able to find since the wind stopped. >> there was nothing left in the barn, but she was laying in the grass. >> reporter: the baby colt born two days ago, his name, twister. for others shifting through the mess is a reminder. >> nobody in our family is hurt, so i am lucky.

>> reporter: families find strength to go on by focusing on what is left instead of what is lost. there is the possibility of more severe weather, although forecasters say for the first time in a long time that threat does not include central oklahoma. jay gray, nbc news, union city, oklahoma. everybody, just go, go, go! everybody, duck down. everybody duck down. >> a team from the weather channel got the ride of their lives. turns out the tornado caught them and that's what it looked like. a meteorologist and two photographers were send on a 200-yard wind blown journey and they were unable to escape that tornado, but they were shaken up and only escaped with minor scrapes and cuts. here is what the suv looked like

after that crash. all three men were wearing seat belts and their air bags destroyed as they had a trip through the air. >> you used to chase those tornadoes, right? >> yeah, we did super cell, and the forecast was never to intercept a tornado. when you look at the velocity mode, you can see where the tornado was, and it shows where your position is at any given time. that's what you want to keep your eyes on 24/7 making sure you know where the tornado is at all times. even though the storms will typically move the tornado to the east, that's not always the case. that's what happened along i-40 yesterday the tornado made a turn to the southeast, so if you are going to have an escape route, traffic and other debris can close that off. a vehicle is not a safe place to be in a stronger tornado. it's the cars and rail cars that

become airborne and act like missiles. in the event you are close to a tornado on the highway, the recommendation is to pull over to the side of the road to the nearest ditch and get out of the vehicle and stay as low as possible to the ground. stay out of the wind, the vertical winds and horizontal winds. a 2 x 4 can go through the windshield and send wood through sheet metal. that's the environment and so a car is not a safe place to be. when traffic and other things were complicating factors yesterday, it made it extremely dangerous for the crews. and no tornado-producing super cells on the radar right now. we is flooding and severe storms, but it looks like the worst threat has passed now for oklahoma and arkansas. quickly back home, our weather today. quite hot. we will let you know about the

full forecast coming up. back to you. >> rob, thanks very much. great tornado information. thank you for that. of course, stay with nbc bay area both on air and online for continuing coverage of the severe weather in the midwest(g and visit nbcbayarea.com and search "tornado." we have a follow-up to breaking news last night. a missing 4-year-old girl in richmond. the girl vanished from her grandmother's house. her family and police looked for her for hours and she was found inside that very home in rich phupd. >> oh, found my baby! >> they found her! >> the family of her got the good news before midnight. the girl was playing at her grandmother's home in richmond about 5:00 yesterday, and she seemingly disappeared. after-hours long searching, the 4-year-old girl was found hiding under the grandmother's bed.

>> i am sorry that she was in here. we looked for her really, really good, and they had the dogs come in and everything. i am happy that she is okay, and nothing bad happened to her. she is not harmed or anything. >> she likes to hide a lot. and the police said, well, it's been a long time. i don't think that she would be hiding that long. and i knew i was right. i am grandma, and i know my grand baby. she was hiding. >> the little girl's family says she may have fallen asleep under that bed. a fast-moving grass fire briefly threatened a commercial building in san jose this afternoon. they were able to extinguish the fire, and it burned an estimated four acres of brush. >> the combination of relative humidity dropping and the high temperatures and winds and the fire danger is increasing. we fear there may have been

sparks or ash from one of the barbecues that ignited this fire, but that has not been confirmed at this time. >> fire officials are asking people to be especially mindful of fire#ml safety, and we wille more on that later. and investigating the 21st homicide of the year and the fifth homicide this week. the killing comes on the first night of increased patrols of san jose police intended to fight the growing violence in the city. police say a man was stabbed to death in west san jose. that's near winchester boulevard, not far from santana row. the victim was found laying in a carport and was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries. >> we're still in the preliminary stages of the investigation, but we believe some kind of encounter occurred, which ultimately ended up with the victim and at least two suspects in the carport area

where the victim was assaulted. >> so far no arrest and no motive. it's unclear whether the stabbing is related. and then an unidentified 25-year-old woman is on life support and two men were wounded. shots erupted at around 2:30 this morning when a party bus tried to drive through the controversy and dangerous street activity. a neighbor that did not want to be seen on camera says the area has gotten more and more dangerous. >> you have a mob of people with no control, and after an hour it gets crazy. >> i worry about my kids. i don't worry for my safety, but i worry about my kids because it all spills out on the neighborhoods. >> and there were two shootings in oakland this morning, and no fattalities from thoses in departments. a bicyclist was hit and killed on the 43 this morning.

interest and not a lot of drama, and that's what a & a was hoping for. >> we were hoping to resume today. >> first launch direct service between san jose on january 11th with five nights a week and planned daily service started in september, and five days later the federal aviation administration ordered the dreamliners grounded because of a battery problem. the airline replaced the batteries and performed safety tests to the satisfaction of the faa. >> this is the first time. yeah, no problems. >> now, this is the safest airline in the world. >> it was out of san jose is why i booked the flight, and the fact that it was the dreamliner is icing on the ache. >> it was a dream for the

airport making increased international offering possible because of the smaller 158-passenger planes. the airline is expected to create jobs and revenue. while the airport waived many of the fees it was to collect in the first year, the merchants paid the price. >> we don't have the passengers parking in the lots or eating in the restaurants and[ñ using th ground transportation, so there is a loss there. >> but the customers i talked to say they are satisfied with how the airline handled the problem. after the first successful landing of the dreamliner, we asked the vice president of the americas who should foot the bill and how much that bill would be and he said that is not a question he is ready to answer. still to come at 4:00, an

on around here and it was an interesting report you had, you former tornado chaser, you. >> yeah, coming up at 11:00 maybe we will share some of the large hail and other things they found on their tour around the plains this week. and around the bay area, the complete absence of moisture. high fire danger into the east hills into the south bay. and 95 degrees in livermore. 71 in san francisco. so it's not a heat wave for the whole bay area, and san jose south, 90s. 94 degrees in santa rosa. in the locations running warmer, it's typical of a summer-like pattern. and the warm air rises up and cool air rushes in to replace it and the late day sea breeze firing up. these days of high fire danger

will be continuing. satellite view shows you the few mid and high level clouds coming in which will make for an interesting sunset tonight but further up the coast, we have weather dropping down that will put a dent in the ridge of high pressure, give us a stronger sea breeze late tonight and you will see low clouds approaching the coast. this is setting the stage for cooling tomorrow. a little inland, but a lot along the coast and along the inner bay tomorrow. inland spots dropping about 5 degrees as well. inland hilltop locations still warm near 60 in some of the places inland tomorrow morning. and highs tomorrow out of the 90s and in the 80s around san jose. and 70s for santa cruz, and mid to upper 80s around fairfield. and near 70? san francisco, and we will probably get that at 11:00 in the morning and then as the sea breeze strengthened we will see things cooling off.

mid-70s in the forecast for oakland and mid to upper 80s and closer to santa rosa, and the winds will shift now, and a southeast breeze, and we should see temperatures cooling down in the north bay as well. one more day of hot weather inland for the trivalley. and then the workweek, cooling down. we could see drizzle for the monday morning commute. you will see the temperatures cooling off for most of the workweek, but take a look at what happens here. friday into next weekend, back in the 90s again, possibly as early as friday. we will see 90s coming back. so the unofficial start last week and it was 60s and rain, and this weekend and next weekend making it hot for the bay area. >> when you were chasing tornados, did you honestly fear for your life? >> when you do it in complete safety, if you stay and keep your safe distance further away and look at it from a research
