easier banking. standard at citibank. we are on later than usual because of the hockey playoffs and the breaking news is in san jose where a massive tree came crashing down in a park this evening. the tree fell on to cars trapping at least one person and on to a bocce ball court where a dozen people were playing including 49ers coaches and their families. kimberly tere is at the scene and will have a live report in a few minutes. police detained a person in connection with a grass fire that burned in south san jose this afternoon. the smoke could be seen for smooil miles. it broke out near 280.

burned five acres. extremely dry conditions did not help. but crews had it contained in an hour. no injuries have been reported and no one is saying much about the person in police custody in connection with the fire. the cause is under investigation. tonight, families across 11 states are dealing with the affects of another round of severe weather. deadly tornados and rain are blamed for 12 deaths and more than 100 injuries. central oklahoma again took the most vicious hit and jay gray is there tonight with the latest. >> reporter: the cleanup begins tonight again after another round of chaos in central oklahoma and across the plains and midwest. >> large tornado right there. >> reporter: multiple twisters on the ground chewing up everything in their path. >> it's gone. >> reporter: leaving behind battered communities and families wondering what comes next? >> it is very hard to describe. i'm still not processing it well i don't think. >> reporter: the emotional scars

across the heartland are just as difficult to deal with as the physical loss. >> i'm sure a lot of people, if they are not at their breaking point they are pretty close. pretty worn out with it. >> reporter: worn out by the winds that ripped apart so many homes and lives here and with this round widespread flooding. driving rain swallowed roadways and homes from north dakota through indiana and kentucky and opened this giant sinkhole in oklahoma city. a cruel irony of sorts for so many struggling to dig out of a hole left behind by three rounds of severe weather, including deadly tornados over the last two weeks. >> i'm hoping this is the end of it. because i don't think we can take much more. >> reporter: frankly, in many areas there's not much more that mother nature can take. jay gray, nbc news, union city, oklahoma. ten bay area red cross

volunteers are in oklahoma tonight. that number is about to become 11. a san francisco volunteer leaves for oklahoma city early tomorrow morning. she told us she doesn't know what role she will play since the disaster is so large. >> whatever they need is our first order of business. right now, because they got hit again with tornados last night there's more direct needs. they are out of power. we are bringing food, water and then also cleaning items and helping them to to clean up debris from the tornados and so they can start to think of rebuilding down the road. >> reporter: she will be in oklahoma city for two weeks. that's the minimum requirement of volunteers and she says one of the challenges for red cross workers from the bay area is they are not used to dealing with tornado victims. far more used to house fires and flooding. stay with nbc bay area.com for coverage on the weather in the midwest.

search tornado. right now we want to get back to kimberly tere at willow park in where a tree came down causing problems including for some members of the 49ers staff. take it away. >> reporter: well, fierrefighte are working on cutting apart the tree. they want to make sure no other victims are trapped under that. they are in the process of that, clearing the branches and debris. the 50 to 60-foot tree fell 6:30 this evening. you can see it split down the middle with half of it falling to the bocce ball court and half in the parking lot here at willow street park. one person was trapped in a car and had to be rescued. that person was not hurt. a 61 woman who was a member of the club was take on the the hospital. and another man near or inside of a car in the parking lot was

also hurt. both are said of the minor injuries. at the time of the accident there were 16 to 18 people on the court. we're told including coaches for the 49ers and some of their wives. one witness says that he saw the tree start shaking and moving and then there was a horrible crack and half of it fell again in the bocce ball court. the other half in the parking lot. some of those here when the tree fell are still shaken up but say it could have been much worse. the park and court were crowded at the time. firefighters have done a secondary search of the cars in the parking lot to make sure there are no other victims there and they are in the process of cutting apart the tree with chain saws to make sure there is no one trapped underneath. kimberly tere, nbc news. >> thank you very much. police are investigating the city's 21st homicide of the year and fifth homicide this week. the killing comes on the first night of increased patrols by

police intended to fight sfliels the city. a man was stabbed to death in west san jose near winchester boulevard and not far from santana row. police say the victim a 35-year-old man was found lying in a carport 10:00 last night. he was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries. so far there are no arrests or motive in the killing. it is unclear if it is gang related. in oakland, a 25-year-old woman is on life support after a side show erupted in gun fire. she was one of three injured in the shooting and the violence comes as police are preparing to unveil a new planned aimed at curbing side shows. monty francis is live in oakland with the details. >> reporter: god evening. police say they are concerned about an apparent rise in side shows recently and plan to unveil a strategy to gooed deal with that on monday. they are investigating the most recent side show that turned violent. you can still see tire marks on

the street at macarthur and 64th avenue where the show took place this morning. several vehicles were doing doughnuts in this street and party bus tried to drive through the westbound lanes. the crowd went crazy throwing rocks and bottles at the bus and someone started shooting. a 25-year-old woman was shot in the head and critically injured. she is on life support tonight. a 25-year-old heyward man and 25-year-old man from oakland were hit but are expected to survive. one neighbor who didn't want his face shown said that side shows happen almost every weekend at this intersection and police rarely respond to neighbors' complaints. >> they are young kids, under aged and the cops don't do nothing. they come back an hour later an do it again. most of the time they don't even show up.

earlier this year, a side show in the middle of the day on 880 stopped traffic and many people who were stopped in that traffic posted videos of it on you tube. side shows have been on the rise after a noticeable decrease four years ago. and police say they will talk about a plan to fight the problem at a news conference on monday. as for the shooting, police have not made any arrests but police and crime stoppers of oakland are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. live in oakland, monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. . we have a followup to breaking news we brought you last night. a missing 40-year-old girl in richmond has been found right where she was reported missing. the family of the girl got the good news just before midnight last night. the girl was playing at her

grandmother's home at 5:00 when she seemingly disappeared. after hours of searching by police and family members the 4-year-old was found hiding under her grandmother's bed. >> i'm sorry she was in here. i feel like we looked for her really, really good and they had the dogs come in and everything. i'm sorry for everybody. but i'm so happy she's okay. and nothing bad happened to her. she's not harmed or anything. >> she likes to hide a lot. they said, the police said, well, it's been a long time, i don't think she would be hiding that long. i knew i was right. i'm a grandma massachusetts i know my grand baby. she was hiding. >> reporter: the little girl's family says she may have fallen asleep under the bed. coming up next, an update on the condition of a former golden state warrior who was involved in head-on collision yesterday. and the actress who played one of the most popular characters in tv history passes away. we will look back at her life.

didn't used to talk about that stuff. in 2002 she was inducted in the tv academy hall of fame. her children said she died of natural causes at her home surrounded by family and friends. she was 90 years of age. former nba star mookie blaylock is upgraded to serious condition after a fiery crash yesterday. the suv he was driving cross nod oncoming traffic and slammed head-on in too minivan. the woman in the van was killed. blaylock had been on life support for several hours after air lifted from the accident scene but since taken off the respirator and sedated. the cause of the crash surnd investigation. coming up, the dream was finally realized today. the non-stop flight to the pacific rim is up and running. we talk to some happy passengers. a wild finish at the o.co coliseum. why the walkoff finish was really just that.

marin county is seeing a spike in whooping cough cases. 36 people were treated for whooping cough in april and may. that is the highest in 60 years. the cases spread from sick children to elementary and middle schoolers. no one has died or been hospitalized in the latest spike. it could mean hundreds of millions of dollars for san jose after four months on the ground the boeing 787 dream liner is cleared for takeoff and that means direct service to japan. >> reporter: as the dream liner landed in san jose again it was with a lot of interest but not a lot of drama and that is what

ana was hoping for. >> operation was resumed today. i'm pleased enann thrilled. >> reporter: on january 11th with five flights a week and planned daily service starting in september. then five days later the federal aviation administration ordered all dream liners grounded because on more than one occasion the lithium batteries on board smoked and once caught fire. the airline replaced the batteries and performed safety tests and flights to the satisfaction of the faa and to the delight of the customers. >> this plane came from japan. so yeah, no problem. >> now this is safest. >> i booked the flight because it was out of san jose and the fact it is dream liner is icing on the cake. >> reporter: the 787 flights were a dream for the airport making increased international offerings possible because of

the inland valleys. still mid-80s outside. san jose is comfortable saturday evening at 73. all locations for the most part warm ir than 24 hours ago but tomorrow night the pattern will be in reverse. temperatures cooling off as the sea breeze turns stronger and it helps to bring in more moisture to the air across the bay and a southwest wind in to fairfield. humidity levels are dry in the hills in the areas in white about 20% relative humidity at times. the fire danger has been high with dry conditions. tonight, we'll see high clouds passing by. a system on the north coast that will crank up the low clouds and lead to cooling. after midnight tonight you will notice on the seashore we are seeing the patchy fog return. could have drizzle and mist from half moon bay to santa cruz by tomorrow morning and during the afternoon, unlike today, plan on low clouds sticking around and filling in to sunday evening as the sea breeze is stronger.
