good morning to you. are you awake? it is 6:00. i am marla tallez in for laura garcia cannon. >> happy to have you with us. we have new video of that rock slide on highway 101 in marin county. this all happened a little after 2:00 in salsalito. chp officers say three of the four southbound lanes on 101 were actually blocked. we got a chance to speak to one of the drivers who saw the rocks actually hit them on her way home from work. >> i came up the hill and the rocks fly. it was too late. it was so dark. i saw a big rock and kind of just tried to climb over and pop the air bag. >> that's a rough go there. she also says the road is very dark through the area. they couldn't see the rocks before they hit them. we are happy to report, nobody was seriously hurt. caltrans ended up clearing that road about three hours ago.

new this morning, in oakland, one person is dead. another is hurt and in the hospital. an overnight shooting that led to a crash. police found the car crashed into a power pole on ghormley avenue. both people in the car had been shot. one of the victims had already died by the time officers arrived. the second victim is still alive in stable condition at the hospital. the crash left at least 129 pg&e customers without power on ghormley avenue. pg&e says the power should be back on at all those buildings now. >> police in san jose have arrested two suspects in the shooting deaths of two teenagers last weekend or the weekend before last. if we can tell you those suspects are teens themselves. one of them is 19-year-old matth matthew clifford of san jose. a 17-year-old is also under arrest. his name has not been released at this point.

the teens are suspected of shooting and killing 15-year-old christian kumwang and johnston kular. they do not believe the double shooting was gang related. clifford has been booked. the second suspect is at juvenile hall. the recent violence in the south bay has a state lawmaker, nora compost, who lives in san jose says the police should ask chp for help and prevent another wave of violence. the acting police chief says he is not sold on this idea. he tells nbc bay area, there are no immediate plans to reach out to other law enforcement agencies for assistance we have a warning for visitors at a popular palo alto trail. police on the lookout for a man that attacked and groped a female jogger. that woman was assaulted run ago long the palo alto bayland's

nature preserve, close to the palo alto golf course, around 11:00 in the morning it happened. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in palo alto right now with how other people on the trail jumped in to help the victim. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. this jogger tells police she started to feel uncomfortable right away. that's because this man was jogging very close behind her. she says that she tried to stop three times to let him pass. each time, he stopped and stayed behind her. eventually, she was attacked. two cyclists actually stopped. they witnessed the whole thing and stopped to help her. well, now, palo alto police are trying to find them. they are the witnesses to this. they left before police could interview them. this started sunday morning around 11:00 a.m. a woman in her 30s was jogging at the baylands nature preserve by the golf course. a man jogged behind her and suddenly jumped on her back.

she thought he was trying to tape her to the ground. he groped her sexually over her clothes. she was able to fight him off. those two cyclists rode up and the guy ran away. all very disturbing for joggers here. >> it is very scary to hear of something like that happening in a neighborhood like this. that seems pretty safe and a lot of people come to. scares us into not coming here and getting the exercise. it does. >> another woman told palo alto police she thought this very same guy followed her earlier sunday morning. the suspect kind of a vague description. he is described as hispanic or biracial, about 20 years old, 5'8" tall, 160 pounds. he was sporting black, buzzed hair, clean-shaven, blue shorts, a white tee and shoes and also had two clear studs in his ears. i did call palo alto police.

flow, rather robust. carrying all the cool, pacific air. 26 miles per hour. that's pretty strong as we head throughout the day today. your temperatures are rather uniform right now, going to jump into the mid-50s to upper 70s, low 80s. no warmer than the low 80s. fairfield today right around 82 degrees. that's as high as i went. at noon, temperatures perfect for outdoor lunch plans, inland, 76 degrees at noon. you will round out the day at 80. 75 degrees bayside at the coast. your full forecast in just a few moments. we have a major heat wave headed your way. we are showing you how long it will last. first, traffic tuesday, some kids getting out of school. any difference out there, mike. >> not enough days so far to see the patterns show up. we did have a vacation day last week. i want to show folks over on this side the right side of your screen. we are looking at traffic that's flowing very smoothly.

then, there is this overhang. on the left side, the backup. the full shot. those are the metering lights. earlier, i showed you the backups past the metering lights. they turned on between the top of the show and just now, in the last six minutes. that's the reason we have a smoother flow of traffic. the detriment over here at the toll plaza, we have the backup. look at that. already filled in just over five minutes of backup past the 880 overcrossing and back toward west grand avenue. that's how quickly it builds at the bay bridge westbound direction. a smooth drive on the maze. things are starting to slow down. also, down the eastshore freeway, we are seeing some 50s. approaching the dublin interchange, the same thing for west 580 and west 84 for livermore. an early burst of traffic around valicitas. a big burst of traffic coming over towards vasco and north livermore. a stalled truck over on the i did not mark it.

joggers to watch their sour roundings after a man groped a woman in the palo alto nature preserve. a woman was jogging when a man jumped on her back and assaulted her sunday morning. they are looking for anybody who may have seen the man in that area. >> the murder trial for olympic sprinter, oscar pistorius, has been delayed in august. they appeared enter court for a pre-trial hearing. more time to prepare their case. he is charged with murder for the shooting death of his girlfriend on valentine's day. breaking news to tell you about in san francisco. a car has crashed right into a house on keith street in the bayview district. we are currently launching our helicopter to check things out on that scene. no reports of any injuries. we will be bringing you updates as soon as we get new details. we take you overseas. protesters in turkey are using crowd finding to get the word

out on their demand. >> it spread from istanbul to the capital of anchora. they are using bay area companies to get the word out. >> we expect them to use facebook and twitter. now, they are turning to the company indy go go. protesters have raised month are than $80,000 from the san francisco start-up to buy full-page ads in american newspapers so they can explain to americans what's going on and what they want. originally, they would put an ad in "the new york times." they have enough money to put in the washington post as well. it started over the redevelopment of a park and now it is more about the future of turkey. will it continue to be a secular democracy as the protesters want or adopt more restrictive religious laws as the government seems to want. >> back here at home, the president taking on patent controls. issuing a series of executive

courtesy of low ceilings out there this morning. i will show you two things, how far inland those low clouds span this morning. a good sign of a cooler day ahead. look at how brown the hills are turning around the bay area. as you can see, we have a lot of dry brush around. as we heat up and dry out even more so, getting into this upcoming friday, saturday, and sunday, it is going to be hot. we have elevated fire danger. the next two days are going to be nice. low clouds for the first part of the day. heating temperatures nice and comfortable until noon. even inland. this is what we are talking about as we head throughout the day. l low clouds are going to sit at the coastline. cool ocean air comes in for the westerly breeze. if you want to open up the windows in your home, let that do the cooling for you. you don't need the a.c. temperatures touching on the low 80s. high pressure really starts to do its work. as we head through thursday and

friday, temperatures soar. saturday will be the peak. this weekend is going to be even hotter. 85 by wednesday. then, the heat soars. you are going to be hearing a lot about that, not just from me but all the meteorologists. cool off into monday but staying hot every day next week as well. if you are headed out to any graduations, make sure you have the spf 30 plus ready to go. the summer shift should start to happen. we will see less commuters.

a big burst of traffic in northbound 101, pretty typical, 680 up towards the airport. it is a little bit lighter. we typically see that where there is a crash, not causing as big a deal as we might think. a little bit lighter flow of traffic. up towards taylor, a crash on the shoulder as well. not presenting a big problem for your commute. here is the south bay overall. it is 6:20. 6:19, 6:20. we are looking at a pretty smooth drive, 280 and 87 just starting to show the build through the corridor. fremont as well. southbound coming up toward mission boulevard. a smooth floechlt w. we are starting to build the volume. another look toward the bay bridge. the berkeley curve, right here, where we are seeing the fast-track lanes with a good flow of traffic. pretty good at the bay bridge

welcome back. five people hurt when a balcony collapsed at a beachside apartment on long island. they will have to see if the apartments are safe. the building had flood damage from superstorm sandy, but not on the second floor where the balcony was located. the fire commissioner says five people and a barbecue may have been too much weight for the balcony to bear. firefighters finally getting

a better handle on a massive wild fire in northern l.a. county. still pretty rough down there. cooler temperatures and light winds overnight helping getting the fire 60% contained. that fire, we can tell you, has destroyed at least six homes and burned through 50 square miles. that is roughly the size of the entire city of san francisco. all mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted. james holmes will be in court today. he is asking a judge to accept his plea from not guilty to not guilty by reason of insanity. if it is accepted, holmes would be given a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation, which could last for months. he is charged with 166 counts of murder and attempted murder for the shooting at a colorado movie theater last summer. more than 50,000 people have signed an online petition to block the release of gory crime

scene photos and other evidence from the sandy hook shooting. a bill backed by connecticut governor would withhold evidence from the public unless families give written permission for their release. media groups and other advocates have some concern that that bill would harm government transparency. the senate committee would take a look at sexual assaults in the military. the joint chief of staffs as well as each branch of the military will testify. they want to remove commander's from the process of deciding whether serious crimes such as sexual misconduct go to trial. military leaders worry a change like that would make it hard for them to maintain discipline. also, on capitol hill, the house ways and means committee will hear from conservative groups which were allegedly targeted by the ichrs.

good morning, jim and marla. those polls open in just about half an hour at 7:00 here in the south bay for a special election that does not seem to be particularly popular with voters. the santa clara registrar of voters is expecting a turnout of only 35% to 45%. it is not cheap to put one of these things on. expected to cost at least half a million dollars. voters will be electing a new santa clara county supervisor for district two, which encompasses most of downtown son jose and areas east and south. seven candidates are in the running. only five have been attending the debates, including this one, put on by the career tv community channel. they need 50% of the vote to win. otherwise, first and second place will compete in a runoff next month. at least one political analyst does expect to happen. they are vying for the position vacated by former county supervisor, george shirakawa. he pled guilty to five felonies

and seven misdemeanors related to abuse of public money. he will be sentenced this friday. bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you, bob. also in san jose. the city council voting again today on a plan to increase the marijuana business tax raising it from 7% to 10%. that plan passed a preliminary vote just last week. today's vote will be the final one on that issue. >> in contra costa county, hercules residents will vote on measure a, which will raise more revenue for the city. that would include bills such as gas, electric, water, phone, and cable tv. the city might have to disband its police department and contract out with the contra costa county sheriff's office. the san francisco pride board expected to meet again today to discuss whether army private, bradley manning, should be named grand marshal of the annual pride parade.

updates just as soon as we get new details. also new this morning, a brief court appearance for olympian, oscar pistorius, to set his date for his murder trial in the shooting death of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. pistorius, who had grown a beard over resent months, was clean-shaven today, very subdued at that hearing with his family there showing their support sitting behind him in court. nbc was in court for today's hearing and we are joined from south africa with a look at when we can see the blade runner go to trial. >> reporter: oscar pistorius looks composed as he arrived here at the court in pretoria this morning. he barely spoke a word during the 20-minute hearing which was a big step toward his murder trial which may come early next year. he is accused of the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, on the morning of valentine's day, february, this year.

he says he shot through the bathroom door where reeva steenkamp was sitting, because he thought an intruder had broken into his home. he was told here inside the court that he must return here on august 19th or face having a warrant for his arrest issued. that is the same day that would have been reeva's 30th birthday. now, time to check the weather as we take you live outside to oakland. a nice shot of the traffic moving along on 880. you can see the gray skies, though. it is called june gloom. >> it seems like a nice day for christina loren to go out and that gloom will go away and get real nice. >> he is a man who has lived here for a good amount of time. >> i followed your lead. >> 6:46. a good-looking day shaping up. the reason i want you to enjoy today and tomorrow is because of where we are headed, triple digit heat just around the corner. the warmest air of the year so far, not just season, the year.

so far, it is going to be really, really hot out there. what i can tell you is, we officially kick off summertime on the8 ñ 21st of this month. at that point, we're not expecting a whole lot of this june gloom to cool us off in the afternoon hours. as you know, it has been a very dry year, specially on the south bay. we do have high fire danger. that's what we are worried about as we get into this weekend. 55 degrees, not today. a beautiful robust onshore flow. low clouds are spanning all the wee inland. they are going to take their time to clear as well. we are going to see a really, really nice day. here is how it all works out. winds mostly coming out of the west. that cool, low cloud cover stays right at the coast. the wind brings the cool ocean air inland. as we head throughout the day, that will be the case. that's going to be the case for tomorrow. then things really start to change. this ridge of high pressure has a lot of energy associated with

it. it is going to drive our winds offshore very quickly. we see the very dry pattern developing in the bay area. your temperatures today are going to jump from the 70s, 80s into the 90s and triple digits as we head through the weekend. we want to sfendpend a little e time and walk you through. 98 degrees by friday. 100 degrees for saturday. a touch cooler for sunday into monday. staying warm and dry even next week. mike, over to you. that's just hot. that's a meteorological team, h.o.t. looking over here, slow, s-l-o-w. 85 shows the yellow and now the orange. that means speeds coming down in towards 50 mimles an hour. the south bay, starting up and continuing over the next hour for the real big build.

west 580 slows toward the dublin interchange. slow in towards livermore. here is 84, continuing to build. we have slower speeds through 680. speeds coming down just below 60 but starting to continue with a build for the sunol area. you will see more slowing throughout the morning. a smooth drive through castro valley. the castro valley "y" not a concern. there is backup here. out of hayward, because, again, of that volume of traffic. a smooth drive toward that san mateo bridge toll plaza. across the bay, a live shot. the approach coming off of 92, not so bad, specially for traffic tuesday. very nice spacing between the cars. you are at the limit for the bridge, which is about 65 or 70. no problems or delays. the golden gate bridge, a smooth drive across the bay as well. low cloud covering. visibility for drivers, that's okay. i am not talking about pilots. we are talking about drivers on the roadway.

some fly down the roads at times. we have new video of that rock slide on highway 110 in marin county. this all happened around 2:00 in salsalito. at one point, three of the four southbound lanes on 101 were blocked. one driver telling us he actually hit those rocks and damaged the car. we are happy to report, no be was seriously hurt. caltrans was able to clear that road about 3 1/2 hours ago. new this morning, in oakland, one person is dead. another is in the hospital in an overnight shooting that led to a crash. police found the car crashed into a power pole on ghormley avenue. one person died and the second victim is alive in stable condition at the hospital. the crash left at least 129 pg&e customers without worm overnight and in other areas near 98th

street and 880. pg&e says the power should be back by now in all the buildings san jose police have arrested two suspects in the shooting death of two teenagers last weekend. one of them, 19-year-old matthew clifford of san jose. a 17-year-old who is also under arrest. the name has not been released on that suspect. the teens are suspected of shooting and killing 15-year-old christian cumlang and 16-year-old johnson kular in east san jose two sundays ago. police do not believe the double shooting was gang-related. clifford has been booked into the santa clara county jail. the second suspect is at juvenile hall palo alto police are asking for your help in finding a suspect accused of groping a jogger at a popular trail. this happened along the palo alto baylands nature preserve, very close to the palo alto golf course sunday morning at 11:00. smith is live in palo alto with more details on this investigation. christy, good morning. >> we just saw our first group of joggers. a rather large group of women. they are urging joggers to be rather careful after a woman was attacked on the trail. they are also looking for two bicyclists who helped this woman. they think they may be witnesses to all this, what happened on the baylands preserve trail sunday morning around 11:00 a.m. when a woman in her 30s noticed a man that was jogging really close behind her. it made her feel very uncomfortable. she said she stopped three times to try and let him pass. each time, he stopped behind her. when she got near the golf course, he suddenly jumped on her back to try and take her down to the ground and groped her. she was able to fight back. those two bicyclists stopped to help her as the attacker ran away. all very disturbing for people who enjoy the popular trail. >> we were really shocked.

this seems like a pretty safe area. we have been out here for more than a year. i never heard anything happening. it is a shock. it kind of makes us afraid to come here. >> the police officers also interviewed another woman in her 40s who said a man followed her from an athletic club bathroom that same morning on sunday. she thinks that he looked similar to the description of the attacker. he is described as hispanic or biracial, about 20 years old, 5'8" tall, 160 pounds. he had dark, buzzed hair. he was clean-shaven, had on shorts, a white t-shirt, white tennis shoes and also had clear or diamond studs in his ears. police have increased their patrols again asking women to be very careful out here and they are working with the victim to try and come up with the suspect's sketch. reporting live in palo alto, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> happening right now, bay area

police searching for a 77-year-old woman with alzheimer's. we can tell you a silver alert has been issued. she was last seen yesterday morning at her home in san lorenzo. police say she is just under five feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes. she could be driving a 2003 four-door toyota camry with a california license plate. a major mistake in a classroom could cost a bay area high school teacher his job. he accidentally showed his class a naked picture of himself. richard styner is a teacher at san leandro high school. he came under scrutiny when he told staff he accidentally showed his class a naked photo of himself during a file demo. school officials called police. during a search of the school computer, they found child pornography and more than 200
