good thursday morning. here's what's coming up on "early today." a major developing story, the obama administration, verizon and the national security agency carrying out what's believed to be a top-secret domestic surveillance program collecting all daily call logs. new details out of philadelphia on that deadly be building collapse. some promising news for this 10-year-old in desperate need of a lung transplant. tropical storm andrea gains strength. a double serving of craziness at taco bell. two weeks after the $590 powerball drawing, the 84-year-old winner finally comes forward. news this morning of yet another classified government program. this time private citizens are among the targets. london's "the guardian" reports the national security administration is secretly collecting records from verizon calls. nbc news has not independently confirmed this report. the secret foreign intelligence surveillance court reportedly granted the order to the feds back in april but limited the time period to three months. in the ruling obtained by "the guardian," the judge orders them to turn over call logs on an ongoing daily basis. it applies domestically as well as calls taking place between the u.s. and foreign nations but does not include actual conversations. the collection of communication logs is believed to be a major component of the bush administration's program of surveillance that took place without court orders, and it comes as the obama administration is already facing furor over its aggressive tactics in the investigation of government leaks. the white house has not commented.

let's go now to immigration reform. bipartisan legislation is expected to hit the senate floor next week. a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll finds a slight majority supports it, but not necessarily right now. and all this as one of the house bipartisan immigration groups gang of eight steps down. nbc's tracie potts is in washington with all of those details. good morning. >> reporter: alex, good morning. a lot has been put into getting this immigration reform effort on its feet and moving here on capitol hill. and while the entire effort may not be falling apart, there are some here on the hill who think it may be losing steam. >> i don't think there's any chance that comprehensive immigration would pass. >> reporter: lawmakers sound less optimistic today about immigration reform than they did a month ago. >> let's bring these people out of the shadows. >> reporter: that's senator marco rubio just after the gang of eight democrats and republicans announced a deal to put 11 million illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship.

now rubio says the bill he helped create can't pass the republican-controlled house. >> and i think it's going to struggle to pass in the senate. >> reporter: the senate takes up immigration next week, but rubio says unless lawmakers toughen up border patrol, they may not get 60 votes. the white house realizes another of president obama's key initiatives may be in jeopardy. >> this work is far from done. >> reporter: one house republican sounded optimistic. >> i think we're going to be successful. i think we are going to have immigration reform. >> reporter: but then he dropped out of the compromise group, promising on pitch his own plan. the pressure is on. republicans need latino votes, and latinos are counting on president obama to reward their support. >> he promised us that he was going to give us reform, but he didn't. >> reporter: so what's the public think about this? our new nbc/"wall street journal" poll says 52% support it, but when people are told that immigrants would have to get background checks and pass them, pay back taxes, pay fines,

that support jumps up to 65%, alex. >> okay. tracie potts in washington, thanks. breaking news out of philadelphia. a dramatic rescue overnight. rescuers pulled a 61-year-old woman from the rubble of a collapsed building. 13 hours after it came crashing down. six people were killed in that collapse. >> we pray that those who survived will recover not only physically but certainly mentally from the trauma of being in a building and it suddenly collapses. >> workers using buckets and bare hands to move bricks rescued a total of 14 people. at least four people are still in the hospital with one in critical condition. >> we have seen superficial lacerations, bruises, contusions. but they're still in the process of being evaluated. >> the collapsed building had been undergoing demolition. witnesses described two loud

explosions right before the collapse. >> some people were panicking, really shaken real bad. >> none of them were able to walk. they were bruised, maybe some broken bones. >> many of the victims were in the salvation army thrift store next door when that building came crashing through. officials say the demolition company did have proper permits. an investigation is under way. a little girl in desperate need of a lung transplant has new hope this morning. you can see 10-year-old sara celebrating in her hospital room as she recently now certainly has reason to. on wednesday, a federal judge temporarily granted her family's request to give her an opportunity to apply for space on a transplant list. current rules allow only patients 12 and older to receive lungs from adult donors. health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius had originally refused to intervene. the single biggest lottery winner in u.s. history is finally revealed. 84-year-old gloria mckenzie claimed her lump sum of $370

million in winnings on wednesday. flanked by her lawyers and a financial adviser. mckenzie released a statement saying she bought her winning ticket after a kind lottery player let her go ahead of them in line. while mackenzie currently lives in a duplex across from a cow pasture, her neighbors don't think she'll be there much longer. the first storm of the atlantic hurricane season is bringing heavy rain and gusty winds with it. let's talk to you right now. >> already. >> bill karins, good morning. >> good morning. welcome to you. as far as the storm goes, it's not going to make a lot of big headlines with destruction and devastation. it's going to be more of a nuisance storm. flooding will be an issue and the possible of weak tornadoes. we had two weak tornadoes last night near tampa. we currently have tornado warnings west of palm beach, florida. there is concerns even with a weak tropical storm that's going to be making landfall. and as far as the storm goes, it doesn't look all that impressive on satellite imagery, but it is starting to move quicker to the

north-northeast. overnight winds increased up to 60-mile-per-hour winds. it's not that far away from being a category 1 hurricane. it's not expected to intensify, but it will race up the east coast over the next 48 hours. then we'll be done with it by about saturday morning. the big story in the west continues to be the building heat. we have excessive heat warnings now in effect for the vegas area. just to phoenix and all through the desert areas there along the border of arizona and california. and southern portions of nevada. so once again, it's going to be hot, as advertised. today about 106. tomorrow will be even warmer in some of the bigger cities in the desert southwest. areas of oregon getting up al there into the near 90s. the summer season has

reporters' phone records at the associated press. plan "b" contraceptive could soon be available over the counter and to anyone who wants it. connecticut's governor signed legislation wednesday banning the public release of crime scene photos from the newtown shooting. the law also seals video evidence from inside sandy hook elementary. and former president bill clinton was among the dignitaries attending a memorial for slain civil rights leader medgar evers. president obama met with his widow earlier this week. evers who was killed by a white supremacist nearly 50 years ago in jackson, mississippi. now for an early look at this morning's business headlines, we turn to hampton pearson. good morning, hampton. >> hello, alex. we've got a takeover deal with real fizz that may be in the works. reports say pepsico is in talks to buy soda stream, the machines that turn tap water into carbonated drinks for $2 billion. soda stream is also checking

knives and golf clubs. new stats from pew find for the first time the majority of americans now have a smartphone. now companies looking to cash in on the next big must-haves for american consumers including wearable technology such as google glasses or smart watches. and widespread criticism has caused the brazilian health ministry to pull their happy prostitute ads. the campaign was intended to end the stigma against sex workers in brazil where prostitution is legal and to promote safe sex with the 2014 world cup and 2016 olympic games coming to brazil. straight ahead, an nbc news investigation reveals new details from our military drone program next.

now to an nbc news investigation about the controversial use of drones by the u.s. overseas that raises questions about whether the u.s. always knows who drone strikes are actually killing. nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel explains. >> reporter: nbc news examined classified documents detailing 114 drone strikes in pakistan in 2010 and 2011. location, death tolls, terrorist affiliations, but they also reveal what u.s. officials don't know, like how many killed. between seven and ten in one strike, 20 to 22 in another. u.s. officials do seem certain

they almost never kill civilians. in those 114 strikes, only one acknowledged civilian casualty. >> they want to maintain the myth that civilians are not harmed in drone strikes, which is simply implausible. >> reporter: what's more, about a quarter of those killed are described generically as, quote, other militants. it suggests u.s. officials don't always know exactly how many or who they are killing. sometimes targeting suspects based on what's called a signature terrorist profile, where they live, who they meet, who they talk to. >> nbc's richard engel reporting. now to sports. a moment to cherish. officer dick donahue was chosen to serve as the bruins' honorary banner captain. donahue's femoral artery was severed. the bruins honored their hero in quick fashion scoring a goal less than two minutes into that game which then went into double overtime.

welcome back. for what is going to be a very hot thursday. temperatures are going to be soaring in not just the desert areas either. all the way through much of california away from the coast. 106 today, phoenix. 106 in vegas. and this is the start of a very hot period. excessive heat warnings already issued.

u.s. anti-doping agency while at the glamorous cfda awards on monday. really, the timing there? guards escorted vonn to the restroom in her gown. her spokesman says the test wasn't a big deal to the skier. while care rie underwood an miranda lambert was busy sweeping the award, kristen bell tweeted her backstage routine, including a breast pump. >> every mom says, don't show me that. >> been there, done that. no thanks. dena lohan reportedly skipped out on a tab on a charity event to help underprivileged children. >> i should be shocked but i'm not. >> lohan racked up $2500 in food and drinks and then pledged another $1500 to the cost but then left without paying a cent. tom hanks tweeted this pic from his broadway show "lucky guy" ask cast and crew to rest

nbc news has not independently confirmed the report, and no comment from the white house. rough day for taco bell. first a minivan crosses four lanes of traffic and slams into a westchester, ohio, franchise. the driver is believed to have suffered a medical condition and two patrons were treated after being sprayed with glass. imagine that, how shocking. and taco bell is firing this guy, a california employee who was seen in this photo licking taco shells during a contest showing employees enjoying the product. the employee was fired for posting the photo on facebook which violates company policy and also for violating food-handling procedures. one australian monkey is a fighter. nook survived her first months thanks to keepers at a sydney zoo. her mother failed to produce enough milk, to handlers have fed the baby monkey ever since. so cute, yeah? did you see the size of the thumb? >> no. >> oh, my gosh. >> grabbing on. >> yeah. very, very small.
