i'll let you know the best times to get outdoors and what's to come as we start to kick off summer. a lot of kids getting out for school today. looks like a party over here in oakland. we are tracking all this. we will tell you what's going on and the progress that's being made and the changes in a few minutes we'll give you a live look outside. that is the bay bridge toll plaza. guess what? we are getting close to the weekend. it is thursday, june 6th. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks for being with us. it's 5:00. i'm marla tallez in for laura garcia-cannon. i'm jon kelley. we have an update on the developing story out of philadelphia. we just got off the phone with our affiliate station in philly. they say the search of the collapsed building has been called off. everybody believed to be inside the building has been accounted for. crews on the scene focusing on

finding out what caused the building to collapse. we can tell you a total of six people were killed when the building slated for demolition collapsed yesterday. 14 others were injured and police say that building had no prior violations to the collapse. it is 5:01. in a little more than 12 hours from now, president obama will be landing in the bay area. a reception in palo alto. bob, the president, he is coming back once again to raise a whole lot of cash. >> reporter: marla, what makes this fundraising trip different than most others to the bay area, at least in recent months, past year or so, is that president barack obama will be making a statement to the public, something he hasn't done in recent trips. people have criticized him for that, since the president usually flies out for 24 hours, collects the money and bolts without making a word about policy. this trip, he will still be collecting money for democratic senate campaigns after air force

one lands at moffett field. he will attend a private fund-raiser here at this palo alto home. this is the home of mike mccue. they have it decked out. mccue is the founder of flip board. the cost to attend this receptionist $2500 a head. $12,000 to $15,000 if you want more access to the president. later, he will attend a fund-raiser at the home of the co-founder of sun micro systems. they will feast on chicken saltimimboco. the president is supposed to make a statement about obama care and how the health care law relates to and helps californians. he is off to southern california for another fund-raiser and a meeting with the president of china. >> on a side note, when the president comes to town, his

motorcade does impact traffic with road shutdowns which is why bernal intermediate school in san jose is urging people attending tonight's graduation to take light rail to the ceremony in parkside hall in downtown san jose, which is along the president's motorcade route. what they are getting at can be very difficult to part. when he comes to town, it impacts traffic. thank goodness, we have our own traffic anchor to help sort that out. >> those are not my houses which he is showing. we are looking over here towards moffett, federal field. this is where the president will touch down about 6:00 p.m. we are talking about that as he arrives. lots of activity in the air, going to be a distraction for your evening commute. 101, 237. bob then talked about that fund-raiser up in pale lo alto. we don't know the specific route or the method of transportation.

that is the next destination. the next one just a little to the west over here. portola valley s 101 and 280. this is still toward the end of the evening commute. if you typically drive home along 280 because of the later hours and perhaps lighter traffic, that might be different for you today. after this fund-raiser, taking you back down to san jose, we already have barricades and road closures. downtown actually will be d disturbed as far as the traffic flow. we talked about the graduation ceremony at parkside hall near the tech museum. the routes there unspecified. keep that in mind for the evening commute. we are tracking it. stend back we will send it back to you. a new published report that says the government is secretly collecting phone records from millions of verizon customers. christie smith is live outside of the verizon store with why

the government would want to snoop around. kristi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the white house has defended the need to collect the phone records of u.s. citizens. at the same time, an administration official did not actually confirm this report in the guardian newspaper that the national security agency has been collecting the phone records of verizon customers under a top secret order. the report says it was issued by the foreign intelligence surveillance core in april and is good through mid-july. it covers numbers dialed by all customers, their location, duration and frequency of the call. not necessarily the contents of the call, what was said. the order suggests u.s. intelligence is continuing a campaign of domestic surveillance that began under president george w. bush under 9/11. this comes as the obama administration is under fire on privacy and first amendment

issues. verizon listed about 121 million customers, the majority of those wireless. it is unclear what's being done with all this information that is being collected. one theory is that it is probably being used to find connections between suspected triflts and their associates. >> reporting live in milpitas, christie smith, "today in the bay." palo alto police are asking for your help to find a driver ha his a disabled man and took off from the scene. the crash happened on saturday along university avenue a few blocks from middle field road. a man in a wheelchair was hit from behind along the shoulder of the road. he is now being treated for his injuries and is expected to survive. witnesses say the driver sped off after the crash. investigators say that driver is a man in a white 2007 to 2011 toyota yaras. the front right side has visible damage. investigating the 2010 deadly pipeline explosion has called it

quits. connie jackson says four lawyers with the california public utilities commission suddenly quit the case. she is now calling on state lawmakers and attorney general, camilla harris, to figure out why. it comes as the cpuc was deciding on a fine for pg&e. the lawyers asked to be reassigned. the father of a little boy killed in a car crash in fremont could soon face criminal charges. gilbert gill was speeding when he slammed into a tree tuesday afternoon. his 3-year-old son, angelo, was killed. the boy's mother also died in this crash. gil was injured but expected to survive. there are new details following a deadly officer-involved shooting in vallejo. the man killed at the dock in the marina was 40-year-old timothy walker. police responded to a loud argument on the boat. when they arrived, they say walker pointed a weapon at the

officer, a modified flare gun used as a hand-held shotgun. the officer opened fire killing walker the mountain view woman accused of embezzling $800,000 from the monterrey bay research institute. lisa mccann will be arraigned in federal court. she was a former payroll employee of the facility at moss landings, facing charges of wire fraud and theft. investigators say she stole the money over the span of seven years. if convicted, she could spend up to 30 years in prison. time to crank up the heat. christina loren is standing by. we have a good-looking day shaping up. temperatures this morning are pretty mild. you might be able to get by sans jacket. scott mcgrew did that today. temperatures all across the board are going to be comfortable at least for the first part of the day.

look what happens. all that low cloud cover vanishes by 10:00 a.m. as a result, we are going to see a warmer day with temperatures climbing only into the mid-80s. this is what we are looking at as we head throughout the day today. we are not going to see the thick, low cloud cover hugging the coastline. it is going to get cut off around the inner bay. as a result, look at where we are headed. 85 degrees. that's not as hot as it is going to be. by saturday, we are talking about the triple digits. 98 for santa rosa. san jose, 92. 85 in oakland. i need to send it over to mike. i am about to lose my microphone. back over to you. we are looking at 880 over here past high street. a much calmer view here right now. the party is over. people are going home, probably stopping off at a fast food restaurant and getting off to work. that's the way young kids do it these days. we will still have road crews north of here to downtown. the southbound side, we typically see the shift as crews leave the area between fruitvale

and the coliseum. a smooth flow through oakland. we do show throwing south 238 and east 580 heading through castro valley. normally, that's just a blip. yesterday, we had some early problems. no incidents reported. it is supposed to be a smooth drive. still around 65 in all spots throughout the area. approaching the san mateo bridge. fremont, easy drive here, 880, no problem past the truck scales in tesla. 101 and 280 without any problems. we will get you a quick look at palo alto. we will send it back to you. a popular road on the peninsula raising safety concerns. hundreds signing a petition urging the city council to improve safety on ralston avenue. it runs through town between 101 and 280. the council now conducting a traffic study that should be completed sometime later this summer.

the first of public meetings at san mateo county will be held tonight. the result of a lawsuit reached that claims that electing supervisors reduces the voting power. they will learn how online mapping tools will be used to review the current boundaries and draw possible new district. the first meeting is tonight at 6:30 at the martin luther king jr. community sen ner in san mateo. the charges are due to the board by early october. 5:14. we continue to watch the controversy out of washington as the nation's biggest spying agency is caught reporting some of your phone records. scott mcgrew, you are going to be covering this for us all morning long. you remind us, this isn't new? in isn't new. the national security agency has been tracking your phone calls. we didn't necessarily know quite

how closely. the news this morning, every verizon customer is being tracked is, in fact, not new. "usa today" broke the very same story in 2006. the headline reads, nsa has massive database of american's phone calls. it describes the then bush administration phone call to track calls on verizon, at&t and bellsouth, which is now part of at&t. we will continue to cover this. keep in mind, we've also known for years, your e-mail is recorded. back in 2006, a telephone engineer discovered the device that does it in a building on falson street. we will be updating you. we are just 24 hours away from getting the all-important job numbers from the labor department. the very first person in the world to see them is hampton pearson. he is live in washington. i assume you haven't seen them yet? no. that too would be in the

offshore wind developing. that is our warming agent. this morning, not too bad out there if you wanted to go for a run. the best time of the day. the coolest point of the day around sunrise. 75 in fremont. by noon, 80 in san jose. you are going to round out the day. as you can see here, temperatures will be nice and hot. record heat, as a matter of fact. as we get into the end of the week. we want to make sure you are ready for that. so temperatures will be comfortable. this is what we are talking about. seven-day outlook works like this. 95 by friday. saturday, 97 degrees. sunday into monday, temperatures are going to end up in the 80s. we also have an interesting setup for sunday. we might get some showers. we'll need that at that point. our air quality is going to suffer as we head through the weekend. we get that dry, warm trend. so, not as hot next week. that's the good news. mike, you have some skids that are going to be graduating as

well. >> yes, yes. we have a graduation this thursday. my daughter will be graduating next thursday from pre-school. she has the final exams. we have to make sure she can do the cutting and the capital letters. we are looking to the south bay where traffic flows smoothly. southbound, a little slowing. down to 55. 60, likely a few cars and a little slower. right over here, the tri-valley, looking really good as far as the build. we are seeing an unusual flow. saw some earlier through castro valley and now through the dublin grade. only down to about 55. we are just tracking it. smooth drive for 84 down through livermore. a big backup starting to form as you are coming out of the altamont pass. we saw the red zone earlier heading to livermore. bay bridge incline, up the

bridge and ed hadding to san francisco, a smooth drive. notice the low clouds touching the tops of the towers. not a problem for visibility. here, the san mateo bridge moves smoothly as well. westbound, your commute fine into the peninsula. back to you. target reaching out to customers after one of the pharmaceutical employees did test positive for hepatitis "a." he fills out prescriptions in hayward and san leandro. she did, infact, contract that virus after eating townsend farms anti-oxidant frozen berries. people are being told not to take medications they receive from those pharmacies, because they could be contaminated. always want to be very safe. the risk of the virus spreading to pharmacy customers is low. closing the windows at

school could be putting your kids at risk. scientists analyzed data on ventilation rates for more than 150 classrooms in the state including here in the bay area. the study shows students are about 3.5% less likely to get sick in classrooms that are well-ventilated. only about half of the classrooms met state ventilation standards. researchers say districts could gain $33 million a year in attendance and linked funding with better ventilation. the energy costs to make the improvement would be about $4 million a year. crash found at the bottom of the ocean right now reigniting the battle overstate-wide ban on plastic bags. the santa cruz sentinel showing dangerous amounts of garbage lining the floor in the monterrey bay. examining 22 years worth of deep sea video. more than 1,000 pieces of trash.

a good portion was plastic bags. environmentalists say the study reinforces the need to ban those bags all across the state. right now, the decision is being left up to individual cities. menlo park's bell haven neighborhood is liking facebook's plan to help pay for a new police station. they approved a three-year lease at the corner of pillow road an hamilton avenue. facebook is pledging more than $215,000 to overhaul the building. the social networking giant will cover most of the rent through the summer of 2016. officers are currently offering a small cramped storefront a few blocks away. taking her message to facebook. we will tell you about the rant by one politician's wife that is making national headlines this morning. star command,

the wife of an alabama politician is taking to facebook to warn other women to stay away from her man. shan drink mcgill has served it as a state senator in 2010. his wife logged on to his facebook page and posted a comment targeted at people she says have solicited her husband for sex. in the post she says, next time everyone will know who you are! for i will publicly share your name before we unfriend you. i love my husband and my children too much to sit here and allow this to go on and will not give the enemy any more footholds into my family. >> the couple has been married for six years and have six children ladies, consider yourself warned. don't mess with mama mcgill. we don't want to mess with the weather outside. it is going to be cranked

president barack obama is about to make another quick fundraising trip to the bay area. what makes this different than the others. that story coming up.

intelligence agency. christie smith is live in milpitas with the white house defending this move. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the white house has defended the need to collect the telephone record of u.s. citizens saying it is a critical tool in protecting the nation from terrorist threats. at the same time, an obama administration official did not confirm a report in the british newspaper, the guardian, that the national security agency has been collecting the records of millions of verizon customers, under a top secret court order regardless of whether they were suspected of doing anything wrong or not. the order started in april and ends in mid-july. verizon has about 121 million customers. most of them wireless users. the order covers the numbers dialed by all customers, location, duration, and frequency but not the contents of the call. the order relies on the business

records provision under the patriot act. the broad nature of the records being handed over is rather unusual. verizon is the second biggest phone company behind at&t, at least in terms of revenue. what does this mean for at&t customers. our own scott mcgrew picks up our coverage there. you hinted that at&t are most likely involved as well. the guardian newspaper found and published that court order that allows the government to track verizon phones but, as you point out, the same order must cover at&t phones. it is only logical. certainly, we have seen evidence of this in the past. in fact, the warrantless wiretap of american phone calls was a major controversy back in the bush administration. some americans got so angry, they sued the phone companies until congress stepped in and said, you could not. then, senator obama was one of the lawmakers who voted to take the power of the lawsuit away

from you to protect the phone companies. we've also known for quite some time that the government makes copies of e-mails that you send. back in 2006, a san francisco engineer by the name of mark klein took this picture. he and three other phone company workers have testified in court that behind this door on folsom street in san francisco, there is a device that duplicates and examines your e-mail placed there by at&t and the national security agency. that too went to court. here is video from a hearing in northern california federal court. president bush and then president obama after him have fought this case claiming national security should prevent courts from pursuing this at all. so what specifically is new today? one, thanks to the reporting by the guardian, we have actual copies of court orders.

we have known for quite some time that the government tracks phone calls. today, we learned those records are transmitted to the national security agency every single day. >> 5:33. in a little more than 12 hours from now, president obama is going to be landing in the bay area. his first stop is a reception in palo alto. then, he is going to head to portolo valley for a fundraising dinner. not a full 24 the president's visit is impacting a local graduation ceremony. they booked parkside hall a year ago for the eighth grade graduation ceremony. it is right ang lo the motorcade route. there is going to be limited access by car. the school's principal is urging people to take light rail to the ceremony. updates during the "today" show. french open tennis will be aired in place of our 11:00 a.m. newscast today and tomorrow. to make sure you stay up to date on the visit, logon to our website, nbcbayarea.com and then starting tonight at 5:00, we will have live team coverage of the president's visit from the moment air force one touches down until takeoff tomorrow morning, friday morning.

we will talk about who is going to get the hottest and when we get the showers. first, let's take a look at your drive. that's busy we are getting busier. eastshore freeway, filling in all the lanes. still good spacing between the cars. the closer the cars, the slower they go. a pretty good flow close to the limit for most of berkeley and emeryville. the maps will show you the same thing approaching the berkeley curve. a little slowing up the incline, not unusual for pretty much any time of the day over toward the bay bridge. here is what's going on. approaching the area of west 24 approaching old tunnel road. reports of a disabled vehicle over there. we are going to watch carefully as it should clear quickly. we will watch for any complications. slowing heading in the westbound commute direction. no problems at the dublin interchange. 84 shows a little slowing through livermore. pretty typical pattern for a thursday. unusually heavy approaching north livermore avenue. that's where the red stops right

following a developing story out of philadelphia where the search of the collapsed building has just been called off, because everybody believed trapped in all the rubble has been accounted for. we can also tell you a total of six people were killed. crews are just rescuing a woman from that wreckage overnight. she was the very last person accounted for. she right now after 12 hours in the rubble remains in critical condition in the hospital. a total of six were killed. 14 others were hurt during that collapse. officials say the building was in the process of being demolished when part of it simply gave-way, crashing right on to a thrift store next door. people inside that store, they say they heard several noises that kind of sounded like explosions and then the ceiling started falling. most of the victims were inside the thrift store at the time. the wife of an employee who was

killed said she happened to speak to her husband 15 minutes prior to the collapse. >> my daughter called me. she said, put the tv on. i put the tv on. it was bad. it was at 22nd and market. i called. i took out my phone and called him right away. we had just put the phone down 15 minutes. so i call him again. he didn't. i've been calling him since then. he never answer. >> the cause of the fire does remain under investigation. authorities point out, the building has no prior violations. >> new details about the raise on a senators office at the state capital. the "associated press" is reporting the fbi searched the office of senator ron calderon tuesday night as part of an investigation into legislation he introduced for a los angeles

area water district. agents were spotted leaving his office with boxes of files. the fbi has not disclosed the details. calderon reportedly gives a contract to a firm where his brother serves as president. the a.p. says under the contract, the brother received a consulting fee of $11,000 per month. new this morning, police in india arresting three men accused of raping a california woman in a resort town. she was hitch hiking to her guest house monday night when the men reportedly offered her a lift in their truck. they drove her to a secluded spot and raped her. police are questioning those men. they have seized their truck. concerns about sexual assault in india very high after the deadly gang rape of a woman in new delhi back in december. the woman who just somehow managed to survive 17 straight days in the rubble of a collapsed garment factory over

in bangladesh is now out of the hospital this morning. the 19-year-old seamstress briefly talked to reporters outside of the hospital this morning. we have video of that young woman on the very day she was pulled out of the collapsed building. she says she will never, ever go back to the factory and work. she has a brand new job. you cannot blame her on that one. she will be working in the house keeping department at the westin hotel in bangladesh's capital. at 5:45, meteorologists along the east coast are keeping a close eye along this. this is tropical storm andrea which could make landfall later today. the storm is expected to hit florida and make its way up the coast toward maine. it's presence is being felt. lifeguards in alabama had to save almost a dozen teens that got caught in a rip current. they are lucky. christina loren is back. you say with all the action and the wind, the coast looks like a rough hurricane season and summer for everybody. >> it is early. we just kicked off the hurricane

season on the first of the month. it is now the sixth day of the month. we already have our first named storm of this season. on the pacific side, we have already seen our first hurricane of the season as well. what happens is hurricanes feed off the warm gulf waters. it has been a warm year. we are going to have to wait and see how things pan out. that's where we really start to get concerned when the areas of low pressure or tropical systems end up in the gulf. this is what we are looking at here in the bay area. the whole west coast is going to have see some hot weather. another concern here. that's fire danger. we are going to get into that kind of weather where it is very dangerous if we see any wild fire. winds are going to pick up. they are going to be offshore breezes. that cool, moist air that comes off the pacific. here is what we are working with. temperatures are mostly in the 50s. 55 degrees. good morning, livermore. 55, oakland. 53 in san francisco. take you into your lunchtime

affected the san jose police department says criticism over its response to reports to a prowler at a local elementary school is unfounded. administrators say police twice failed to respond to calls about the alleged prowler on campus. that happened earlier this week. police say they did respond after investigating higher priority callings. when that prowler returned the very next day, officers were there on the scene within four minutes. the man was later arrested after a burglary call in that area. a new charge coming against former santa clara county supervisor, george shirakawa jr., when he is sentenced tomorrow, he will be arraigned on one more charge, felony impersonation. police say he mailed phoney fliers meant to discredit a city council candidate in 2010. that flier was meant to look like it was from magdalena corosco's campaign. evidence found on one of the
