live look at the commute. thursday, june 6th. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thanks for being with us. 6:01. i'm marla tallez in for laura garcia cannon. good morning. i'm jon kelley. you can see the barricades are out. the itinerary is all set hours before president obama arrives for a bay area visit. we can tell you this time the president's first stop will be pale l palo alto for a fundraising reception at a private home. off to portolo valley for dinner and more fundraising at another private house. the president then makes his way south to san jose where he will stay overnight and deliver remarks on health care. we have team coverage of the presidential visit. mike inouye has his eye on the motorcade route and how it will impact trafx. we begin with bob redell live in palo alto about new details

about today's presidential visit. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla and jon. what makes this fundraising trip to the bay area different than most others? president barack obama will be making a public statement during his trip, something he hasn't done on other trips. that's something he has received criticism for, because he usually comes in for 24, if not less than that, 24 hours, collects the money and bolts out of town without making a statement on any policy. that's not going to say that he is not going to collect any money. two fundraising trips. he lands at moffett field later today, heads over to this home in palo alto where there is going to be a reception tonight. this is the home of mike mccue, the founder of flip board. it will cost $2500 a head to attend. $12,000 to $15,000 if you want more access to the president. later tonight, the president will attend a fundraising dinner. this is not far from here at the

portola valley home of the co-founder of sun micro systems. that will be around $32,500. from what we've seen on the menu, it does look very enticing. it is a fund-raiser. you are going to get a creek salled a, house made california bread basket chicken breast saltimboka, wines and petite deserts. assorted french macaroons, salted caramels and it is a fund-raiser for democratic senate campaign. president will stay overnight at a hotel. tomorrow morning, he is going to make this public statement to the press. this is going to be specifically about obama care and how his health care related to californians. the president will be off for

another fund-raiser and a meeting with the president of china. again, president barack obama expected to be landing with air force one on air force one at moffett field a little bit later this afternoon into the evening. reporting live in palo alto. bob touched on this. it is not just fund-raisers for president obama. tomorrow, he will deliver a speech on obama care in downtown san jose. barricades are in place. the visit is having an unintended impact on the graduation ceremony at a local school. the principal at barnal intermediate school booked the hall. the hall sits right along the president's motorcade route on the school's website. the principal has posted a note urging everyone to take light rail to the ceremony to avoid parking restrictions in the area. also, want to note that getting

to the tech museum and the plaza day cesar chavez will also be difficult. fr moor more on the preside motorcade route, let's check in with mike inouye. >> at marla showed you earlier, the barricades in. a lot of closures going on in downtown san jose as well as other areas. the president will arrive, moffett field. we are officially where the president will arrive this evening. this is pretty much at 6:00. his travels will be late in the evening commute. this area is where the president is traveling. we don't know the specified route. 101 is a good connector through the area. a pretty quick stop there. about an hour and heading over

toward portola valley which takes you west. that traverses the area around woodside and 280. road closures along the way as the president's motorcade will be affected. now, after that, it is going to be later. after the commute for the evening. this will affect your route toward and in downtown san jose. the area around the plaza and the tech museum and all related facilities will be barricaded off starting yesterday and well into today and tomorrow's activities as well. don't expect this to clear until tomorrow mid-day. this will be an issue for local traffic. plan on delays if you travel through the area. don't come through if you don't have to. as far as traffic flow, we will put the censors on. here is our live traffic with mostly green. north of 101 and 680. not unusual. we will see that kick in in the

nextrb@ñ10-15 minutes for the sh bay. the tri-valley looking really light as far as 580 toward the dublin interchange. 84 slow through livermore but not a big deal over there. earlier problems off of west 580. we will get you a quick look out there as well. the bay bridge toll plaza with all the cash lanes. it looks like they may have turned the metering lights on in the past few minutes. what are the changes ahead for us? >> we certainly have the low clouds this morning. the difference between yesterday and today is the marine layer is thicker. it was thicker yesterday. is the surface. it looks like we have more fog out there. what's happening is high pressure is forcing the marine layer to the surface because it is so thin, it3rñ will clear o. the fog delays will likely be lifted by about 10:00 a.m.

man with a knife. matt lauer says that man tried to harm himself with a knife. the good news here, nobody else was injured. they were all set there. they started their 8:00 hour in the studio and they had to explain this situation. there is a video taken by a witness at that scene. it shows security tackling the man and the police are right now handling this scary situation. a developing story in philadelphia where we wanted to give you a live look at the scene here. rescuers have just stopped their overnight search for anyone else that might have been buried in the rubble of this building collapse. you can see emergency crews still john seen today of course. in the past 30 minutes, our nbc station told us the investigation is now underway. a woman was pulled out of the rubble overnight alive when rescuers heard her voice. at least six people died. 14 others are injured because of this collapse. investigators say the building was being demolished when it

building under demolition fell right on to a neighboring thrift store. san jose police are investigating the city's 22nd homicide after a man was killed while trying to save a young man with disabilities from being beat up. the family of 58-year-old francisco lugo died tuesday morning after he was hit on the head on saturday. an unsettling report, the u.s. government is secretly recording and collecting phone records. the white house is defending. we go in-depth on this story on the new report. scott mcgrew would have his inside coming up in a moment. we start things off with christie smith, live at a verizon store in milpitas. she has a look at the new controversial report. this court order is literally marked top secret. that is the very first line. it directs verizon to hand over all calling records on an

ongoing daily basis. today, the white house defended the need to gather information about u.s. citizens calling habits saying it is a critical tool in protecting the nation from terrorist threats. an obama administration official did not confirm a newspaper report in britain's guardian that the national security agency is collecting the phone records of millions of verizon customers. at the request of the fbi, the order covers each number dialed by all customers, location, duration and the frequency of the calls but not the contents, not what was said. the order relies on the business records provision under the patriot act. verizon lists about 121 million customers, most of them wireless. the order was actually granted on april 25th and is good until mid-july. an attorney with the privacy watchdog group says it would be very unlikely verizon would be

the only carrier under this type of order. reporting live in milpitas, christie smith, "today in the bay." kichristie smith, thank you very much. scott mcgrew has been covering the eavesdropping on americans since the 2001 attack. >> first, the newspaper found and printed court orders that allow the government to track and keep records of every phone call you make. we hadn't seen a document like that before. while we have known thanks to whistle blowers that phone companies turn over their records to the nsa. we didn't know until today that that record dump happens every day. i use verizon. if i were to call you right now, this phone call i am actually making, will be on a computer in virginia forever by the end of the day. now, i doubt this news that the government knows who you called

and when will have a very big failout for the president. after all, who is going to complain, the republicans? the same thing happened under the bush administration. in many cases, those were warrantless wiretaps. if you are outraged, you might think to sue the phone companies. years ago, congress protected the phone companies from turning over phone records. this young senator from illinois called it outrageous. to the dismay of his supporters, ended up voting for it. then senator obama supported the program. he then has expanded upon it as president. today's news is about verizon. you say to yourself, at least i'm an at&t customer. as christi pointed out, it is likely they are tracking you

too. "usa today" broke that story in 2006 with this headline. nsa has a massive database of american phone calls. verizon, at&t, every phone company did this except one. one would not participate. that was qwest communications. they are now verizon. jon and marla, a number of groups, many in san francisco, electronic frontier, aclu, they have been fighting in court. the lawyers complain that americans simply don't get worked up about this. that kind of takes the power away from them. >> i'm proud that you gave me a call. i don't know if everybody knows. >> it is in havirginia on a computer right now. >> i answered but you didn't respond. i think you are a little busy. >> i need to get your phone number so everybody can stay in touch. i will get it from the nsa. 6:17. christina loren is back. we don't need big brother watching the weather. we got you doing it for us.

today, 85. livermore, 98 by saturday. today, already, getting beyond our seasonal averages. by tomorrow, we could be talking records. better chance for hitting those records as we head through saturday. big ridge of high pressure is the reason why. this is moving in quickly. it is going to bring the hottest weather of 2013 so far. make sure you are ready for that. the first official day of summer doesn't come in until the 21st of this month. we are only at the 6th of june, talking about triple digit heat. it is very dry around here. outdoor bru outdoor burning. we do not advise that. if you want to hit the beach, we also have some bad news in that department. high rips. some very dangerous rip currents. rough seas as we head throughout the next couple of days as the down sloping winds pick up. water temperatures are cool, 55 degrees. i think what's cool about those very large waves is you can sit on the warm sand and watch those big waves come in and crash. it is kind of cool.

for north 101. we expect the second to kick in on a normal traffic day. we are looking at a lighter volume again. we are watching the shift as it starts to happen on the northbound routes. as we look to the tri-valley, a shift of traffic. more folks headed over to the dublin interchange after the earlier issue. we had a big jam. things thinned out. more folks heading through livermore. nothing dramatic there. farther back, westbound 580, we still have the crash for quite some sometime blocking one lane. all lanes are now cleared. it is still very slow and gummed up. expect more traffic toward the interchange. the bay bridge toll plaza, we have no problems over here. we have the metering lights on. things are moving so smoothly. we still consider this a little bit lighter, backed up only to west grand avenue coming off of this area from the east bay. the peninsula looks very nice. northbound. all the way up in towards san

now. tropical storm andrea expected to make landfall in florida's big bend area sometime by this afternoon. a live shot looking at that. this will happen before moving across southeastern georgia and the carolinas. it is not expected to strength then, however, into a hurricane. today marks the last hearing before the start of george zimmerman's trial in the shooting deathf florida teenager trayvon martin. this right here is a live look inside the courtroom. today, a judge will consider weather to accept a voice experts testimony. prosecutors have hired voice orders whether those were of barton or zimmerman. they are pleading not guilty of second-degree murder claiming second defense. >> a pentagon report claims former c.i.a. director, leon panetta revealed the name of the ben lin laden raid leader.

the downtown area. business and tech reporter, scott mcgrew, he joins us live in studio. lots of civil rights lawyers hope this is enough to get the average american angry. >> yeah. because, this, in fact, has actually been going on for years, marla. the latest bit of evidence just confirms what we've known through court testimony since at least 2006. there has been very little outrage. mr. obama is supposed to address health care in a speech in san jose tomorrow. will he address the verizon question as well. the guardian newspaper has discovered secret court orders which permit the national security agency to collect the phone records of every single verizon customer, land line and wireless. who you called, how long the call lasted, but they are not to our direct knowledge listening in on the call. if you are an at&t customer. you are not off the hook so to speak. first, it is logical that the same order exists for at&t

users. secondly, you recall the government was caught in 2006 doing the very same thing to at&t customers and verizon customers without a court order. it was a crime, both by the agents who asked for the records and by the phone company workers who handed them over. congress then passed a law making it not a crime retro activity. jon, we are going to continue to monitor this. mike mccue, the silicon valley start-up guy hosting the president later today. i have sent him a couple of messages asking, are you going to bring this up, jon and laura. is this something that comes up in conversation. certainly, it is something the obama administration is well aware of. they were out with a statement this morning saying this is necessary. >> bottom line, we really shouldn't be surprised. >> scott, we look forward to that. thanks a lot. new details this morning about the raid of a senator's office at the state capital here in california. the "associated press" reporting the fbi searched the office of

senator ron calderon, tuesday night, as part of an investigation into legislation he introduced for a loens angel area water district. agents w'spotted leaving his office with boxes and files. they have not disclosed the exact details of the investigation. two people questioned by agents admit the investigation involves the la democrat and his brother. legislation introduced by calderon gives a contract to a firm where his brother serves as president. the a.p. says under that contract, the brother received a consulting fee of $11,000 per month. a new charge against former santa clara county supervisor, george shirakawa jr. when he is sentenced tomorrow. he will also be arraigned on a brand new charge, felly impersonation. police say he mailed phoney flyers meant to discredit a city council candidate in 2010. the flier was meant to look like it was from magdalena corosco's

wrongful death trial. the fourth anniversary of michael jackson's death is coming up on june 25th. a ten-year-old is one step closer to getting the help she needs. she celebrated when she found out a federal judge is suspended the age factor in the nation's transplant rules for ten days for her. she will be able to move up the adult waiting list in hopes of improving her chances of finding a match. a 19-year-old seamstress who somehow survived for 17 days inside all that rubble of a collapsed garment factory in bangladesh will not be going back to work at a factory. she has been given a job in the house keeping department at the westin hotel in bangladesh's capital of daka. she was released from a hospital thursday.
