i feel very grateful that we got out of it the way we did and nothing serious happened. >> the bay area's second limo fire in as many months. this time involving a group of senior citizens. the 90th birthday party that went terribly wrong next. plus new details this morning we're learning about the health of former south african president nelson mandela. after a year of questions and controversy the george zimmerman murder trial gets under way. what we can expect to see in court coming up. to help jump start your monday morning, we'll give you a little inspiration with a live look at your bay bridge. it is day one of the workweek, monday, june 10th, this is "today in the bay."

it is just about 4:31. good morning everybody. i'm jon kelley. after a week of well-deserved vacation, look who is back? >> do i look rested or tired because it's sorely in the morning. good morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning. first we'll see good morning to meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. welcome back, lawyer la. we have a lot of weather happening across the bay area. chances are if you've been out and about over the past hour, you saw the flashes of lightning. look at all these realtime lightning strikes still occurring in the north bay. we'll continue to see this pattern at least through mid morning. we have a very, very unstable area of low pressure driving in this moisture. so for us today, we are going to be on the lookout for isolated thunderstorms. we could see dry lightning strikes. we're very concerned about this fire season. we'll be watching it for you very closely.

otherwise, temperatures will be cool this afternoon. we'll take a close look at the forecast. first want to check your drive. my little light show this morning. >> glad you pointed that out. the first time i thought maybe it was me blinking and being tired. then the second time, i think that's lightning. in fremont the cameras show the flapping flag as well. first i want to talk about a crash, two crashes we had, one eastbound which is cleared and westbound for 580 as you head past north flynn. all activity over to the shoulder, but we see slowing. speeds only down to about 58, but just some distraction at least heading toward the dublin interchange. one of the areas where chp reports they got caught by some gusts of wind. we'll talk about the bridges. happening right now, the world is watching south africa where former president nelson mandela remains hospitalized this morning. these are some of the headlines in the papers in pretoria this morning. the 94-year-old remains in

serious condition right now. mandela, however, was well enough to visit with family members just yesterday. he was rushed to that hospital a day earlier for a lung infection. this does mark the fourth time mandela has been taken to the hospital since december. 4:33. lucky to be alive. a group of senior citizens narrowly escaped a limo fire. it's the second one in the bay area in two months. the limo burst into flames just after the driver picked up the women for a 90th birthday celebration. it happened yesterday in ross more, a senior adult community near walnut creek. the birthday girl, circumstance friends and three care takers had just entered the limo for a trip to sonoma when it burst into smoke and flames. >> the driver got out immediately. he said everybody out. i thought of what happened in san mateo. i'm a nurse. they were all nurses. i couldn't believe this could happen. >> i don't understand how it happened. i really don't. one minute everything is fine

and the next minute it's chaos. >> many of the women used canes and walkers, but they managed to make it out safely. the limo's owner says the limo is only five years old and is properly maintained and assured. he thinks an electrical unit malfunctioned. walnut creek police say they did not find evidence of any criminal, but they have notified the chp in light of the tragic may fire that killed five women on the san mateo bridge. 'main meanwhile says she'll never ride in a limo again no matter who asks her. she and her friends eventually car pooled to her party. >> happy everybody was okay on that one. sunnyvale police looking for answers after the city's first homicide of the year. police say they found a man shot outside the peacock lounge bar near fremont high school at about 1:00 yesterday morning. he died at that scene. officers not saying at this point how the man got there and they have not made any arrests

so far. another was wounded in the shooting but was treated and released from a local hospital. the father behind the wheel when his car crashed killing his 3-year-old son and wife is expected in court. 34-year-old gilbert gill will be arraigned on changed of vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment. witnesses say he was driving at possibly 100 miles an hour through fremont when he swerved and his car slammed into a tree. the car seat was thrown from the car killing the boy instantly. the boy's mother died the next day from her injuries. gill was injured in the crash but is expected to survive. the san leandro high school teacher accused of having child pornography will be arraigned. when officers searched his school computer they found child pornography. he's also charged with residential burglary. police say he broke into a woman's home last year and stole photographs of her in her

underwear. police needing your help trying to find a burglar who tried to break into a hillsborough home in the middle of the day. this happened yesterday afternoon about 3:30 at a home on summit drive near hoover elementary school. the homeowner there heard the door leading to her back yard starting to rattle. when she went to investigate she spotted the burglar there. he took off and police right now are still working on a suspect sketch. later this morning, potential jurors will gather at the seminole county courthouse more than a year after 17-year-old trayvon martin was shot and killed by former community watchman george zimmerman. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty saying he acted in self-defense. jay gray is outside the courthouse in sanford, florida, with a closer look at the case. >> reporter: the pool of potential jurors comes from a community that understands it's now back in the spotlight. >> the main thing is to have a fair trial and to select the people that are going to be fair

and they're going to give the right choosing of the verdict. >> reporter: that might be a difficult task in a case that for more than a year now has been wrapped in considerable media coverage and at times -- >> what do we want? >> justice. >> when do we want it? >> no. >> reporter: controversy. >> the end of the day the need is not to find a jury with an empty mind, but a jury with an open mind. they may know something about the case, but the key is whether they can make a fair and impartial decision based upon the evidence allowed in the courtroom. >> zimmerman had pled not guilty to a second degree murder charge telling police he fired the fatal shot that killed trayvon martin in self-defense during a fight he says initiated by the 17-year-old. >> he said, yo, you got a problem? i said i don't have a problem man. >> reporter: a probable cause affidavit filed by prosecutors says martin, quote, was profiled by george zimmerman who police say followed the teenager through his gated community

despite this conversation with the police dispatcher. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> reporter: the defense says zimmerman stopped following martin and was on his way back to his car minutes before the deadly confrontation. that's one of several questions at the center of this high profile case as jury selection begins today. jury selection is expected to take two weeks. the trial could last a month or even longer. jay gray, nbc news, sanford, florida. >> jay gray, thank you very much for the update. want to get out there when it comes to the forecast. did you see any lightning out there? >> i didn't, but i heard you talking about it. >> what do you think about that, christina? >> i am happy about it to tell you the truth. it gives me something to talk about. what we do have, a concern when it comes to the lightning across the bay area, potential for dry lightning strikes to ignite a brush fire. so far that has not been the case. the good news is a lot of this activity is winding down. so over the past three hours, i'll show you that radar in just

a second, we picked up quite a bit of lightning activity, but it's starting to dwindle down. 59 in livermore. your hair, ladies, probably going to get the frizzies for the next few hours. look at this. 3d doppler radar tells the story. look at all this activity especially in the north bay. that's enough lightning and thunder to wake you up up there. what i can tell you s at this point, we'll stop the clock and zoom in and let you see, we're starting to see the lightning strikes diminish. that's going to be the trend through the next few hours. by mid morning we should be nice and clear and we'll have enough cloud cover throughout the day today to stay nice and cool as well. it was a hot weekend. 111 on saturday in walnut creek. take your temperatures down today in the east bay back to the 70ss. so some significant improvement in your temperature department. 76 for livermore, 71 in concord, 69 in fremont, 70 in san jose. i'll have your full forecast in just fauf minutes and show you

what we can expect as we head into the workweek. let's check the drive with mike. >> 11 in walnut creek. glad i didn't go there. 101 northbound with the headlines on 680. this is the southbound volume of traffic, really light right now. all directions looking good. southbound shows yellow, speeds down to 5, not a big deal. south 880 as you head toward brokaw, i saw slowing over the last five minutes where there was a crash reported. not far from our station. that crash probably cleared just about the time when i was driving through. now we have some paperwork going on. over toward amory ville as well. you see the camera shaking because of the gusty winds at times. we're talking about it across bay area bridges as well as we have a new crash along 880 involving a big rig. when i get more details, i'll get it to you in next report. >> 4:40.

>> you can find them every once in a while. >> hey, what about the temperatures today? >> good. one of those days you don't want to stay inside playing video games all day. >> i was more of a street fighter 2 girl myself. 4:47, taking a live look as you can see here. lots of lightning in the north bay this morning, especially in the ukiah clearlake region. quite a bit of activity in the sonoma area as well. the lightning strikes are starting to taper off. we'll still be dealing with them for at least the next couple hours. i want to show you what's happening realtime. this is the active cell that i'm watching in the east bay, just to the south of livermore, so it's in the hills near pleasant ton. you can probably hear the lightning and thunder surrounding that lightning. throughout the morning that's going to be the case. look how mild our temperatures are. those thunderstorms feed off this warmth and we've got an area of low pressure just

kicking up this moisture. so here it is. here is the setup for you. area of low pressure is to our south, putting in the bands of moisture right over the bay area. because it's so warm, we have enough instability for the thunderstorms to fire off. what i can tell you right now is we've had no dry lightning strikes reported, but that is fair game this morning. as you're driving to work, you see something, you see maybe a fire on the brush. make sure you stop, pull over and let somebody know so you can get it controlled as fast as possible. we do have that in the forecast at least for the first part of the day. for the second half of the day, things will change. clouds clear out, a nice finish, 70 in san jose, 76 in livermore, 56 in san francisco, but it's the tropical feel we have out there that we have this morning. what i can tell you is you probably want to keep a jacket with you. really no need for one just yet. once this area of low pressure clears out, we'll dry out and get more of that crisp bay area air we're used to. 80 degrees by nds. leveling off in the 80s. saturday into father's day,

temperatures look comfy. back to you guys. 4:48. new details about the man who leaked secret information that government officials say put the nation at risk. 29-year-old edward snowden says he's the one that exposed the secret surveillance program sparking a debate on capitol hill over the agency snooping on phone calls and internet traffic. according to the guardian newspaper the contractor was working in the nsa office in hawaii. in an interview snowden revealed he's a former cia employee. he also says he expects the u.s. government to try to track him down. >> that's a fear i'll live under for the rest of my life, however long that happens to be. >> a real estate agent in hawaii says snowden and his girlfriend moved out on may 1st, living in hong kong since that time. we have a followup, officials in bangladesh suspending seven inspectors for

negligence following the deadly collapse at a garment building. the country's labor minister says the inspectors renewed the license of the gormt factory without visiting the building. it killed more than 1,100 people. the inspectors could lose their jobs. the man accused of causing the deadly building collapse in philadelphia that killed six people is still in jail. 42-year-old sean ben shop was denied bail yesterday. toxicology tests show the crane operator had marijuana in his system. at least four people have filed suit against the contractor that hired the man. they say the four story building should have been demolished by hand rather than with heavy equipment. keeping a close eye on the u.s. supreme court this morning where the judges are expected to rule on a number of cases. one of them could be proposition

welcome back. a brand new study finds repeated concussions can have a lasting effect on your kids. the new research analyzed nearly 300 young athletes who went to the emergency room suffering from concussions and it revealed after their second or third one symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea and difficulty concentrating lasted much longer than the usual 12 days it takes kids to recover. >> there's a window of time after the head injury in which the brain is more vulnerable to a second head injury. >> researchers suspect it may be the brain hasn't fully recovered
