thanks for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. the lightning is nice and continues this morning. this is video shot a few hours ago from our san jose camera. we've received a lot of reports from lightning here and in the north bay. >> christina loren has been telling us right now, parts of the bay area, lightning and rain, kind of busy out there in the skies. >> it really is. good morning, jon. welcome back laura. good monday morning to you at home. this is what we're working with this morning. quite a bit of lightning activity. for the most part it's north of sonoma county. i set this back for the past three hours. you can see we've been dealing with it quite a bit. we still have showers coming down in sonoma county as well as the east bay. look at this. mike and i are both tracking these showers for you now along 580 in livermore. temperatures are nice and mild this morning. they will end up nice and mild this afternoon, cooler than average day. then things start to change. i'll take you through the full forecast in just a bit.

right now back to you, jon and laura, and the top stories of the day. new this morning. what started in a house fire in san francisco is becoming a major crime scene. arson investigators, police and a narcotics team at a home on 35th avenue north of golden gate park, that's where they found a marijuana grow inside the burning house. firefighters arrived to find the house covered in flames. when the firefighters got inside the house, they found the rear portion of that home was being used as a pot grow. >> it makes it very difficult for companies to make hose leads in the rear of the building, quite a bit of clutter in the back during these operations. it took a little bit of time. >> firefighters also say electrical wiring and ventilation equipment also made this one very tough to get the flames finally out. a 90th birthday party in the bay area turned dangerous when a limo carrying ten women caught fire. it happened yesterday in rossmoor in walnut creek.

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us at the walnut creek police department with the latest on this investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. it is amazing they all made it out alive, especially considering the circumstances. ten elderly women had just gotten into a stretch mim low trying to celebrate the birthday of a 90-year-old when that limo started to catch fire. as you can imagine, the birthday girl is saying no more limo rides ever, no thank you. can you blame her. elaine says she can't believe her birthday celebration took a near fatal turn. three caretakers, six friends in their 80s and 90s yesterday got into the limo in rossmoor heading for sonoma. >> i don't understand how it happened. i really don't. one minute everything is fine and the next minute it was chaos. >> reporter: the caregivers were

well aaware of the deadly limousine fire on the san mateo bridge which killed five women. that fire moved much quicker. walnut creek police say they did not find any evidence of anything criminal going on, but they have notified the chp. the owner of the limo says it's only five years old and he thinks it's properly maintained and insured. he believes an electrical unit may have malfunctioned. as for the party itself, the ladies traveled in a private car to sonoma and carried on with the party. reporting live in walnut creek, christie smith torques day in the bay. a warning for people who use a popular east bay hiking trail. police say a man has exposed himself to women at least six times on the iron horse regional trail in walnut creek. officers looking for this man. they think he is in his 20th, about 5'10" with a thin build and shoulder length dirty blond hair. police were on the trail over the weekend warning women about this guy. they say the man struck mostly in the afternoon and early

evening over the past four months. >> pleasant ton police trying to figure out what caused a weekend crash that killed a cyclist and injured her husband. the 18-year-old driver is not charged and said to be cooperating with police. he hit the cyclist on foothill road yesterday afternoon. the wife died at the scene. the husband was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive. the teenager accused of killing a south bay paramedic expected in court for what police call a robbery gone wrong. 16-year-old christian burton being tried as an adult. police say he was with a group of teenagers on april 2nd when they approach quinn boyer in the oakland hills with the intention of carjacking him. police say burton shot boyer in the head when the paramedic tried to drive off. five other teens were arrested in this case. one of them just 13 years old. the man accused of a mass shooting at oakland's university expected in court today.

we're expecting to get a progress report on the mental competency of goh this afternoon. if you recall back in january a judge ruled goh was incompetent to stand trial. he is currently being treated at napa state hospital. goh stands accused of killing seven at ol' cause university in april of last year after a dispute over tuition. jury selection starts today in the trial of george zimmerman charged in the death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. zimmerman has already said he hot and killed martin, but he says he did it in self-defense. zimmerman is pleading not dillity to a second degree murder charge. 5:06. good morning to you. we welcome back laura garcia-cannon on this monday. some kids are actually off for school. this is their first monday of

summertime. if you're trying to get those kids outdoors today, it's a good day to do so. high temperatures aren't going to be all that warm. we're almost done with all this lightning. it's starting to clear out. watch out for a little shower activity moving through the east bay at this point. we don't have any lightning reported in the east bay right now. you are going to find pretty active cells capable of getting your highways nice and slick this morning. mike and i will be watching that for you. we stop the clock between nine and noon, all that activity starts to wind down. between noon and 5:00 p.m., we'll start to see the sun break through those clouds. limited sunshine means temperatures will be comfortable, 70 in san jose, 69 in fremont and 58 in san francisco. we do have changes between now and father's day just around the corner. 5:07. let's check that drive. good morning, mike. >> father's day just around the corner? >> yes, daddy. >> that's a whole other thing. we're looking towards the bay bridge. traffic flowing nicely across

the bay. no problems right now. we'll look at the maps and we'll see slowing across the upper take. down to only about 55 by which is what it should be. slowing from richmond toward el cerrito. accidents on the shoulder, but a good deal of distraction. we should have your commute quickly recovering. we see things change even over the last couple minutes. slow heading toward the merge. also around monument, car went up onto a guard rail on its side. 680 moves smoothly, but you might see flashing lights past monument. no slowing on this map. here is what christina is talking about. the moisture in the air might cause slick roadways. early debris out of the altamont pass. there's livermore valley. looking okay as far as the reports from chp. >> it is 5:08. tonight the san jose city council taking on rising violence on city streets.

one of the items on that budget hearing, a proposal to increase funding to police departments and adding more officers on the beat. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at san jose city hall with a preview of that hearing. >> reporter: this issue of police pay takes on extra importance, extra level of importance as the city is dealing with an increasing number of homicides. at its current rate the city of san jose is on track to surpass last year's number of murders which itself was a 20-year high. one argument why crime is worse, there are fewer officers on the streets. many have left sjpd because of recent cuts in pay, cuts that mayor chuck reed said were necessary to offset increasing retirement costs for police. tonight the city council discussed at a budget hearing how to restore some of that pay and perhaps keep these officers and rule others back. reid's proposal calls for an additional $16.5 million for officer wages which amounts to a

5% pay increase and a retention bonus of 4% in the third year. in a memo councilman ash cal rah is proposing a 10% increase over the next two years which he believes is necessary to stop the exodus of officers moving to other departments for better pay. >> my worry if the mayor and council don't take seriously what's happening in the city in terms of officers leaving is that we're going to have more of the same. more of the same has been an increase in crime. >> reporter: mayor reed doesn't think the proposal will fly since he argues it would require closing half the libraries and community facilities. the budget hearing is tonight at 7:00. near san jose city hall behind me. tomorrow the council will vote on those proposals. >> reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:10.

we're not out to become any kind of person that would destroy relationships, get upset because the bidding came higher last year than it did this year. >> williams says he's thrilled about that winning bid. he said some more important things that buffett has made a long-term commitment to helping the foundation. here's the question. what's the next big thing? how about flat? scott mcgrew and apple about to unveil a new look. >> apple is going to change the look of your iphone, your ipad 2 with what designers call a flatter look. it launches the worldwide developers conference in san francisco today. we expect to hear about a lot of things, new laptops, new music services, but most importantly the new look for the operating system that runs apple's mobile devices. what does this word flat mean? you'll hear it a lot. it's easier to start with what

it doesn't mean. here is an iphone showing some of the books that a user has on his or her device. see how they're on a bookshelf, a mate that for mimicking real life. this idea has fallen way out of favor with apple. instead we expect apple's new operating system to look a lot more like this. this comes from microsoft. it's very flat say designers. simple tiles without lots of extras. apple will introduce this new ios this week. it won't be probably until fall till it's pushed to your device. let's check in with jackie deangelis live at cnbc headquarters. >> got morning, scott. futures are higher right now after the market rallied on friday on the back of that good but not great jobs report which saw slightly more jobs added last month than expected. the unemployment rate did rise.

that was because more people are actually looking for work. this time investors will focus on economic data out of china. no u.s. data expected today. the key report this week is may retail sales. look for that on thursday. the dow raising 207 points on friday to 15,248, the nasdaq adding 45. scott, back to you. >> jackie, thank you. 5:16. reports say comcast will announce today it's broadening its public wi-fi system. starting soon, any comcast internet customer will be able to jump on the home wi-fi signal of any other comcast customer, assuming that customer, of course, is using the latest wi-fi device. basically comcast is splitting your wi-fi signal. your home gets your own protected signal just as fast as always. but there's going to be this extra public signal, totally isolated from yours. that will be available to the public. it's something you can opt in or opt out on, but the idea is to spread the blanket a little further. i should point out, laura and

john, that we are owned by the comcast corporation. >> all right, thank you very much, scott. 5:16 right now. let's check back in with christina loren to find out what's happening on your monday morning forecast. >> there's a lot going on out there. you know what? we just had extreme weather over the weekend. now dealing with even more extreme weather this very morning. look at this. these are lightning strikes. i set the radar back for three hours so you can see all the activity that has rolled through the north bay over the past three hours. that's where it's been the most active. i can imagine a lot of people hear that thunder, it probably woke you up. make sure you let us know. we want to know what's going on weatherwise where you live. you can put it right on my facebook page. here is what we're tracking, spotty cells in the east bay. things are starting to clear out nicely. temperatures starting really mild so you can go with a jacket this morning. you likely won't need the jacket all day long. highs are going to be kind of cool, maybe at the coast. only hitting about 58 degrees in san francisco. so area of low pressure is

moving the the north. this is driving up those showers and driving up all the instability. for us, we're seeing 50s and 60s at the coast. 70s and 80s meanwhile inland today. 76 for livermore, 72 in fairfield. temperatures will stay steady as we get into tuesday and wednesday, only up to the 80s, comfortable conditions for this year's father's day. let's check the drive with mike. >> good morning. we'll take you toward the dublin interchange where things are starting to slow down a bit. highway 85 you see your traditional build. this is a pretty standard map. let me superimpose the road weather index. traffic and weather are tied in together. look at this. the green is where there's actually moisture. possible slick conditions. here even the blue shows there may be damp roads through the area. christina showed you all the activity in the area. we're following that. not necessarily rain, but we might have some slicker roads through these areas. no problems reported yet by chp.

they're also talking about the weather, a wind advisory for folks out of the altamont pass and across the bay bridges as well. earlier debris around north land had cleared. that's good news. as we take you to an earlier crash, also, west 80 through richmond. two earlier crashes cleared to the shoulder. all that big backup, gentle slowing through the area which is typical as that commute starts to build. a smooth drive toward the maze in the hills of oakland, you might find moisture conditions. noz a big deal as far as driving goes. there are the low clouds we're talking about. in the cash lanes we're starting to see the slowing. golden gate bridge has a wind advisory. it's not a major problem as we're coming from the north bay and the south bay ultimately very smooth on the maps. back to you. >> thank you very much. 5:19. san pablo will get new cameras to tone in on license plates and even faces. the city is hoping it will be a solution to crime especially on

the roads used by drive-by shooters from richmond. the city already has cameras up at two schools and several intersections up there. now the city is looking to add cameras in the city's old town district. that's where nearly half of the city's violent crime occurs. this would cost the city about $75,000 to maintain those cameras. >> former a's pitcher brandon mccarthy is recovering after having a seizure while having dinner with his wife. you'll remember back in september he was hit in the head with a line drive while playing for oakland, carted off the field with what was described as life-threatening injuries. he recovered and returned to baseball. last week he collapsed with a seizure related to that head injury. after extensive examinations he was prescribed anti-seizure medications. he says he'll be well enough to return to pitching soon. hope he's doing okay. >> any time you suffer a serious head injury like that, keep a close eye on it. good luck to him. 5:20.

it's kicking up the bans of moisture into the bay area. we have enough instability for the thunderstorms to fire up. i want to start with this live picture of san jose, we still have cumulonimbus out there. we're still fair game for thunderstorms as we progress throughout the morning. a lot of it is going to taper off as we head through mid morning through late morning, all the way through home. we'll start to see more celeb stability and everything will clear out. 59 degrees in sunnyvale. 58 in san jose, 58 in gilroy. a mild start. it feels prop cal out there. we're only going to climb by about five to ten additional degrees. i'll tell you why and what's to come later in the week coming up in just a bit. back to you, jon and laura and the top stories of the day. we now have a name and face for the man who says he exposed the national security agency's secret surveillance programs. edward snowden claims you need to know what the government is up to. officials say he is putting the nation at risk. potts joins us on capitol hill with what happens next. >> reporter: what happens next is probably an investigation, the nsa has asked for it. the justice department has the paperwork sitting on its desk to get this started. edward snowden used to work for the cia, ended up working for defense contractors, now says he's out of the country but he exposed all of this, phone records being collected, e-mails and other online activities being collected because he was sitting at his desk doing it. he didn't think it was right. for him to make those decision. he thought this is something that the american public should know about. he says he's been hiding out in a hong kong hotel room to basically escape prosecution or at least immediate arrest after he revealed this information. the government is concerned, the dni, director of national intelligence james clapper in an exclusive interview with nbc says the bits and pieces that

we're hearing about these government programs are providing essentially misinformed view of what the government is doing and they're being forced to declassify top secret information to put it all in perspective. bottom line, we have not heard the end of this yet. here on capitol hill it's making for some strange bed fellows with democrats and republicans many some cases agreeing, in other cases disagreeing on whether or not this information should have gone public. >> very interesting. now it's out there. thank you very much, tracy. >> happening right now, the world is watching south africa where former president nelson mandela remains hospitalized this morning. we have some headlines to show you from papers in pretoria, south africa, from just this morning. the 94-year-old remains right now in serious condition. however, mandela was well enough to visit with family members just yesterday. he was rushed to the hospital a day earlier for a lung infection and this one marks the fourth time mandela has been taken to the hospital since december. 5:33. fighting the city's violent

carrying ten women catches fire. this happened yesterday at rossmoor, a senior adult community located in walnut creek. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live with the latest on this investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you, jon. after surviving something like this, the 90-year-old birthday girl is saying no more limo rides for her ever. can you blame her? she and nine of her friends were in a limo about to take off to celebrate her birthday when that limo suddenly caught fire. fortunately everyone made it out okay. now walnut creek police and the chp are investigating exactly what went wrong. elaine lafchi was about to celebrate her big day with three caretakers and six friends, all in their 80s and 90s. they boarded a limo that was supposed to take them to sonoma. it was idling when smoke started coming from the back. some of these ladies use walkers and canes. within minutes, that smoke

turned to flames. >> the driveer got out immediately. he said everybody out. >> i feel very grateful we got out of it the way we did and nothing serious happened and everybody is fine. thank god. >> reporter: they say they are thankful to the limo driver. notified the chp in light of the deadly limo fire last month on the san mateo bridge. five women died. this fire moved much slower. the limo's owner says the walnut creek fire, that limo is just five years old, properly insured and maintained. he thinks maybe an electrical unit malfunctioned here. the women were amazed at how lucky they were to be okay. they actually continued their party, traveling by private car to sonoma. reporting live in walnut creek, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> glad they're okay. >> so very lucky. that age, still able to move pretty good.

>> pretty fast. the party went on, too. 5:37. we check back in with christina loren, a busy day in the weather department. >> i wouldn't be surprised if there was an after party as well. we have showers on the radar this morning. enough to slow down your commute, all this moisture right now, as you can see, is pressing to the west. it's about to hit 880. as you know, 880 is not a fun ride in the morning at this time. we'll check on that with mike in just a minute. as i widen out for you, you can see all the activity we've had over the past three hours. i wanted to widen out and stop the clock on your radar to show you most of these lightning strikes for the most part at this time are north of santa rosa, north of sonoma county. we are going to see this wrap-around moisture throughout the day today. by about 8:00 to 9:00, things start to really lighten up. by noon today, a mix of sun and clouds overhead. as we progress throughout the second half of the day between noon and five, we'll get sunshine. we'll still see cool conditions,

only wrapping to about 58 degrees in san francisco. let's check on the drive right now. kind of a weird one this morning, mike. >> we had a lot of earlier crashes. there's enough moisture in the air that it might present slicker roadways in spots. that might have contributed to things. looking toward the san mateo bridge. you saw christina's radar drifting over that area. you see the low clouds starting to move over to the right. looking to the maps as well. on the hayward side, 880, not a problem. 238, your commute is still just fine. south 680 at monument boulevard. the on-ramp, still affected by an earlier crash. the on-ramp is slowing. be careful if that is the way you get toward that freeway. a smoother drive to the bay bridge. we'll show you the cash lanes starting to build over the last couple minutes. on the north bay, a smooth drive from southbound 101. it is 5:39 right now. concussion concern. we'll let you know what we're learning this morning about concussions and your children.

later this morning in florida potential jurors gathering at the seminole county courthouse, more than a year after 17-year-old trayvon martin was shot and killed by former community watchman george zimmerman. zimmerman is charged with second degree murder and he has pleaded not guilty saying he did act in self-defense. jay gray live outside the courthouse in sanford, florida, with a closer look. >> reporter: good morning. summons were sent to 500 potential jurors here and at the top of the hour, the defense team and prosecutors will begin the process to whittle that number down to six who will actually hear the high profile case. >> reporter: the pool of potential jurors comes from a community that understands it's now back in the spotlight. >> the main thing is to have a

fair trial and to select the people that are going to be fair and they're going to give the right choosing of the verdict. >> reporter: that might be a difficult task in a case that for more than a year now has been wrapped in considerable media coverage and at times -- >> what do we want? >> justice. >> when do we want it? >> now. >> reporter: controversy. >> the end of the day the need is not to find a jury with an empty mind, but a jury with an open mind. they may know something about the case, but the key is whether they can make a fair and impartial decision based upon the evidence allowed in the courtroom. >> zimmerman had pled not guilty to a second degree murder charge telling police he fired the fatal shot that killed trayvon martin in self-defense during a fight he says initiated by the 17-year-old. >> he said, yo, you got a problem? i said i don't have a problem man. >> reporter: a probable cause affidavit filed by prosecutors says martin, quote, was profiled by george zimmerman who police say followed the teenager through his gated community despite this conversation with the police dispatcher. >> are you following him?

>> yeah. >> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> reporter: the defense says zimmerman stopped following martin and was on his way back to his car minutes before the deadly confrontation. that's one of several questions at the center of this high profile case as jury selection begins today. that jury selection could take two weeks. the trial itself expected to last a month or longer. live in sanford, florida, i'm jay gray. jon, back to you. >> jay, thank you very much for that update. a followup this morning. officials in bangladesh suspending seven inspectors for negligence following that deadly collapse at a garment building. the country's labor ministry says the inspectors renewed the licenses of the government factories operating in the building without ever even visiting the building. the april collapse killed more than 1,100 people. inspectors could lose their jobs if those accusations are true. the man accused of causing

the deadly building collapse that killed six people still in jail. 42-year-old sean benschop was denied bail. toxicology tests showing the crane operator had marijuana in his system. at least four people filed suit against the company that hired benschop and property owner. officials condemned the demolition work. they say the four-story building should have been demolished by hand rather than with heavy equipment. 5:45, keeping an eye on the u.s. supreme court this morning where judges are expected to rule on a number of cases. one of them could be proposition 8, california's ban on same-sex marriage. the high court will issue rulings every monday in the month of june. it is likely the prop 8 ruling will come at the end of the month. however, if it is issued today, we'll break in as soon as that ruling comes down. time is 5:45. christina loren has had her work cut out for her.

from the lower latitudes. it's pumping subtropical moisture in the area. as that collides with our drier and cooler air in the bare a yeah, we get the pop-up thms as a result. today we'll see that for the first part of the day. highs are comfortable. 70s and 80s inland. 50s and 60s at the coast. monday, tuesday, wednesday, temperatures climb from the 70s today into the 80s. we'll level off staying in the low 80s tuesday through thursday. then a nice cooldown headed our way just in time for father's day weekend. that means you can make those outdoor plans anywhere without getting too hot this year, mike. over to you. >> mid 70s just like i like it. thank you for trying to get me that father's day temperature. traffic flowing nicely, just like we like it. we have a typical slowdown just before 6:00, northbound 101, north of 680, nothing unusual. we will take it to the east bay, actually into the tri-valley, out of the altamont pass. chp issued a wind advisory,

pretty gusty through the wind farms. debris farther back through the 205 split as well. slower drive toward greenville and vasco road. there may be damp roadways and the blue means there may be some wet roadways. that's what christina talked about, the rai coming through in spots. that's what's going on for the tri-valley, no major concerns, there is slowing in the area for 84 as well as 580. that continues with the green overthrow the castro valley area. coming across the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge, your drive is okay. the low clouds hovering around in spots. not a major concern. we have a slower drive now heading toward the maze. one of the reasons i want to show you this. look at the video, northbound 880, these are the signs. i hope you know where you're going. as you approach the bridge, there's a different name over there as well as 580 to 80 east, these signs have been basically

painted over. that is an issue. hopefully you know your way around the area. let me show you a quick look at the bay bridge if that's where you're headed. just the cash lanes have the backup. they should start to backup in the fast track lanes when they turn the metering lights on as well. a new study finds repeated concussions can have a lasting effect on your kids. really nothing too surprising about that. the new research analyzed nearly 300 youth athletes who went to the emergency room suffering from concussions. it revealed after their second or third concussion, symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea and difficulty concentrating lasted more than the 12 days it takes kids to recover. >> there's a window of time after the head injury in which the brain is more vulnerable to a second head injury. >> researchers suggest there is a possibility the issue may be from the fact the brain hasn't fully recovered from the original trauma. the study also found children who lost consciousness actually recovered more quickly from their concussions.
