on this june 10th, this is "today in the bay." good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'ml1 jon kelley. what started out as a house fire in san francisco has now become a crime investigation. fire crews say they found marijuana inside a burning home that happened early this morning. the firefighters are still on scene at that home on 35th avenue in near golden gate park. firefighters say it was really tough to get these flames out because of all that marijuana in the rear of the house. >> it makes it very difficult for companies to make hose leads in the rear of the building. quite a bit of clutter in the back. it took a little time. >> firefighters also telling us that electrical wiring and ventilation equipment also made this one tough to get a handle on that fire. >> we've got new details this morning in a limo fire here in the bay area, the second in less

than two months. this time the limo burst into flames with a group of elderly women inside heading from the rossmoor senior community center in walnut creek to a birthday party. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at police headquarters where investigators are trying to piece together what happened. >> reporter: good morning, laura. these women are very lucky to be alive after a close call in a limo that caught fire. as you said, ten elderly women inside. this morning walnut creek police are investigating the circumstances of this fire, but at this point they don't suspect anything criminal was going on. elaine lofchie was trying to celebrate her 90th birthday with three caregivers and six friends. they were leaving walnut creek heading to sonoma. that's when smoke started coming from the back of the limo that was idling. these women had walkers and canes. the smoke quickly turned to flames. >> the driver got out

immediately. he said everybody out. i thought of what happened in san mateo. i'm a nurse. they were all nurses, and i couldn't believe this could happen. >> i don't understand how it happened. i really don't. one minute everything is fine, and the next minute it was chaos. >> walnut creek police say on the heels of the deadly limo fire just last month in the san mateo bridge where five women died, they have notified the california highway patrol. the owner of the limo in walnut creek says the car is only five years old and is properly maintained and insured. he thinks an electrical unit malfunctioned. the women were thankful to be okay. a very close call. after all this they actually carried on with the party, headed to sonoma in private cars. live in walnut creek, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:03. a recent run of violence citywide now pushing public

safety to the top of the priority list in this year's budget. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at san jose city hall where a butt hearing will be held later tonight. what is it the mayor saying olice officer may and fire department staffing? >> reporter: he says will it be enough of a pay raise to boost morale, especially considering how many officers left in recent months. is of particular importance because of the increasing violence. right now the city is dealing with an increasing number of homicides. at the current rate the city of san jose is on its way to surpass last year's number of murders which in itself was a 20-year high. there are fewer officers on the streets, many have left the police force because of recent cuts in pay, cuts that mayor read say were necessary to offset increasing retirement costs. today the city council discusses how to restore some of that pay.

reid's proposal calls for an additional $16.5 million for officer wage, amounting to a 5% pay increase over the next two years and a one-time retention bonus of 4% in the third year. city councilman ash cal rah is proposing a 10% increase over the next couple of years which he believes is absolutely necessary to stop the exodus of officers moving to other departments. >> my worry is the mayor and council don't take seriously what's happening in this city in terms of officers leaving, is that we're going have more of the same. more of the same has been an increase in crime. >> reporter: mayor reed doesn't think the proposal will fly since it involves closing half the libraries ande? community centers in the city. he's proposing a spend ofg $8 million to maintain the staffing. the budget hearing is tonight 579:00 at san jose city hall. tomorrow the council will take it up and pass on a vote, yea or

nay. live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." at 6:05. we have new video in this morning from the south bay. keep an eye in the upper left-hand corner of your screen. bam, right there. that's lightning striking just a few hours ago in the skies over san jose. want to check 234 with meteorologist christina loren right now. she's been keeping track of it all for us. >> we've got this tropical air moving north. as we head throughout the day today, we're not going to be dealing with this for much longer. most of that activity is way to the north of santa rosa. we're still getting pop-up cells. western facing slopes surrounding san jose. you're fair game having to use your windshield wipers, especially if you live in the south or the east bay and the north bay where we've had most of the activity. as whed throughout the day, we start the clock on futurecast about 8:00 a.m. at that point still getting light activity along the coastline. continue the futurecast, stopping at noon today, that's when< we're expecting mostly dr

conditions. that's when the clouds will break apart. lots of sunshine for the second half of the day. a comfortable day temperaturewise, specially since we had 110 degree weather in the east bay yesterday. today 69 in fremont and a cool day in the city by the bay at 58 degrees. i'll let you know what's next to come. we have arm wag trend heading our way as we head into your father's day weekend. first, want to see how you're doing on your drive. there's weather in the area. let's find out how we're doing with mike. >> good morning, christina. the weather is an issue, you see low clouds. the metering lights are on. you see the backup here. you see the map on the approach, a smooth drive through most of these areas. we'll show you more as far as the roadway sensors. over here in san francisco as you come slowly across the upper deck, a disabled vehicle that just cleared. the bottom of the screen show it is green. enough moisture in the air where

you might getr damp roadways an slick conditions as well. we'll look at the golden gate bridge, the opposite of that. overnight the chp with a wind advisory. right now it's not so much of a concern. we don't see the impact on the cars. the low cars may descend. so far not a big deal. we'll show you also the map as you're traveling through the area. san jose, for example, the live shot northbound 101 shows a smooth flow north of 680. there you see the slowing at the top of your screen. we're looking toward the east bay tri-valley. the green shows where there may be moisture. the green where you may find wet roads on 580 and highway 84. just be advised about that. back to you. thank you very much. 6:08. happening now, jury selection is under way in the trial of george zimmerman. a former neighborhood watch volunteer charged in the death of 17-year-old trayvon martin.

a live look at the courthouse this morning in sanford, florida. zimmerman has already told police he shot and killed martin, but he says he did it in self-defense. zimmerman is pleading not dillity to a second degree murder charge. we're learning more about the 29-year-old man who says he is the source who leaked secret information igniting the debate over the nsa snooping on phone calls and internet traffic. edward snowden is a contractor. he says he is a former cia employee. in an interview with "the guardian" snowden says he expects the u.s. government will try to track him down. >> the greatest fear that i have regarding the outcome or america of these disclosures is that nothing will change. >> a real estate agent in hawaii says snowden and his girlfriend moved out of their home in honolulu back on may 1st,

no one was hurt. police still searching for the cause of a limo fire in walnut creek. a group of senior citizens inside that limousine were all able to escape safely we're happy to report. the limo's owner says it's possible an electrical unit malfunctioned. >> san jose mayor recommending $16.5 million to restore police officers' pay and $8 million to maintain fire department staffing in this year's city budget. a budget hearing will be held tonight. the vote will be held tomorrow. your iphone is about to change a lot. >> that is right. scott mcgrew, apple releasing details on its latest operating system. iphones will never look the same. >> never look the same. honestly you probably have till, say, fall, till you actually see these changes. the first look we will get will be today. you're looking at life pictures as folks line up around the there went the live pictures. darn it. muss coney center in san

lightning strikes were coming down right now. this is up in the north bay. that's where the bulk of the moisture has been pushing through. most of this is actually north of sonoma county. for us we're going to start to see that taper off as we head through the next hour or two. i am watching this little batch of cells heading towards san jose. it will continue to press toward the east. 26 minutes from slick conditions in san jose, about 57 minutes away from all that moisture into sunnyvale. we're going to need to stay on top of this this morning, track the thunderstorms as they develop. you'll notice the general nature, the showers are pushing from south to north. let me widen out and show you the setup. this area of low pressure is coming out. for us it's bringing in that tropical moisture. that prous pro dueses instability. once that subtropical moisture comes in, it collides with our dry air in the bay area which is cooler. that's what pops up those thunderstorms. as whed throughout the day with rain-cooled air and plenty of cloud cover, highs will end up

in the 50s and 60s around the bay and 70s and 80s on the way inland. 58 in san francisco and 70 degrees today in beautiful san jose. getting to the next couple days, temperatures are going to climb. we'll be back to 90 by friday. just in time for all the dads out tlrks cooling you off for father's day weekend. any sort of barbecue plans looking good. not dealing with the fire weather we had over last weekend. mike, over to you. >> still, barbecue any time of year is great news. northbound 101 the volume builds here right at 680-880 interchange. that's about the only slowing we see in the south bay. as we move toward the pen anyone la, 101 through palo alto and northbound coming up past university. a nice easy clear drive past ikea, all the landmark stores heading northbound. the southbound side equally as smooth. 101 and 280 close to the limit as you get a look at the maps. we'll show you the slowdown.

that occurs right around the interchange with foster city. not a major issue. but we have slowing at 92 and 101. as we look at the green, we're looking at moisture in the air. that will be an issues some folks travel across the area and maybe slicker roadways possible, but not really a bigger deal. the tri-valley, you may find wet roads for 580. the arrow pointing toward 880 we saw slowing through hayward sticking around in about the upper 50s. the green painted over here, you might get some damper roadways, not a big concern as far as the traffic flow goes. as you head toward the maze, slow because of the bay bridge backup because of the toll plaza. right over here just by the clock over here, that's the berkeley curve. i see slowing here and slowing coming off westbound 580. here is this sign sorting out we call that the maze area.

imagine that without a sign. that's what you're getting. there's a problem. our photographer alan went out there, as you're approaching the maze, there's graffiti approaching the maze. make sure you know your exit. it does say the direction and the interstate, but the rest of the directions, a problem there. that will be a distraction. we'll have to pay for that cleanup as well, we all do. 880 northbound heading into the area, easy drive past the coliseum. no problems toward high street and the high-rise. a smooth flow for the nimitz. back to j you. mike, thank you very much. we've all heard of the big fish stories. a pennsylvania doctor now sharing her story after saving a baby moose from rashing waters during a fishing trip in montana. moe was following its mother through the water when it was swept downstream. she managed to scoop it up after spotting its nose poked up

surveillance video to try to see exactly what happened. >> on the international scene, ten people dead, 30 others injured after back-to-back car bombings at a market in central iraq. police say bombs inside three parked cars exploded all at the same time tearing right through a vegetable and fruit market. officers say more people could end up dieing from those blasts. seven government inspectors are suspended in bangladesh. the labor ministry says inspectors renewed the licenses of garment factories in that building that collapsed back in april. 1100 people were killed during the collapse. the labor minister says three of the inspectors were also involved in renewing the license of a garment factory where a fire killed 112 people last november. no bail for a crane operator accused of being high while demolishing a building in philadelphia. sean benschop is expected to be

charged with involuntary manslaughter a. four-story building under demolition collapsed. toxicology tests found marijuana in benschop ice system. no charges in the death of an arizona army veteran accidentally shot by his 4-year-old son. 35-year-old justin thomas and his son were making a surprise visit to a friend when the boy found a loaded gun in the house. that boy asked a question about the gun and then pulled the trigger hitting and killing his father. officers say the gun should have been locked away. but thomas's friend was caught off guard by the sur prifz visit. police say 23-year-old john zawahiri is responsible for the ledley shooting rampage in santa mon kachlt police say he shot a father and daughter at san monica city college. police say zawahiri walked into

mark. today is monday, june 10. this is "today in the bay." it is 6:30 right now. good morning, happy you can join us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning we have a name and a face for the man who says he exposed the national security agency's secret:o surveillance program. edward snowden says you need to know what the government is up to. but some government officials say he is putting the nation at risk. for details, let's check in with tracie potts who is live this morning in washington, d.c. what happens next, tracie. >> reporter: what's next is probably an investigation where we're getting word that the nsa that oversaw these programs is asking the justice department to look into it. >> i think that the public is owed an explanation -- >> reporter: nbc hasn't confirmed it, but edward snowden says he's the man who leaked

classified information about the government's secret surveillance program. the 29-year-old analyst worked for a defense contractor in hawaii. he used to work for the cia. snowden says he risked his life& going public because he believes the government surveillance of phone calls and e-mails went too far. >> i sitting at my desk certainly had the authority to wiretap anyone from you or your accountant to a federal judge, even the president if i had a personal e-mail. >> reporter: snowden reveals his identity to britain's "guardian" newspaper. they broke the story. e. >> every time there's a whistle-blower, the tactic of the government is to try and demonize themóy+ as a traitor. >> snowden says he's hiding now the a hong kong hotel room and fears the cia will come after him. >> that's a fear i'll live under for the rest of my life. >> reporter: the director of national intelligence calls the leak reckless and says it put

kelley. >> this is, of course, san jose. you can see we are starting to get some sun rays through that solid deck of clouds. we do have some fog now developing and rolling onshore. we're still dealing with these lightning strikes up in the north bay, although they are starting to taper off. i set that back for three hours. this is what we're working with in the south bay, just some light cells right on top. a little bit of shower activity moving into san jose with more training behind it. as we head throughout the next couple hours, we'll continue to see this action. it will start to clear out of here. futurecast tells that story between 9:00 and noon, mostly dry. between noon and about 5:00, we'll see sunshine today. our sun doesn't set until 8:30. we're getting some long days as we transition into summertime. that's starting on the 21st of this month. today we're going to see highs well below average for this time of year. 70 degrees. on the way to san jose, 69 in fremont and only expecting the upper 50s in places like san francisco for today. but we're going to warm you right back up.

we are getting into summertime around here. it's going to feel like june before you know it. i'll show you when. your seven day outlook is coming up in my next report. mike knows what could slow you down. >> the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights were turned on just before 6:00 this morning. we have a big backup going back into the maze. the fast track lanes are moving. they slow things down because there was an earlier stall which has cleared from the upper deck of the bridge. we'll show you the maps. it's westbound 580, look at that little red coming off 24 and toward the maze itself. backed up on that strip as you approach coming out of the oakland area, we see westbound 80 slowing a bit. a look at the san francisco side with the green painted over the maps, there may be some damp roadways. keep that in mind as that weather travels through. southbound 280, reports of a crash, towards 380, now presenting a problem for folks heading through the area. maybe if you're heading over

sfo. more green down the peninsula. not a problem for 101. 84, the dumbarton and the san mateo bridge, coming off the castro valley y. >> 6:35. the teen abler accused of killing a south bay paramedic is expected in court for what police call a robbery gone wrong. 16-year-old christian burton is being tried as an adult. police say he was with a group < when they approach quinn boyer in the oakland hills with the intention of carjacking him. police say burton shot boyer in the head when the paramedic tried to drive off. in the case. one of them just 13 years old. the man accused of a mass shooting at oakland's oikos university expected in court today. we're anticipating progress q competency

of one goh. in january the judge ruled he was incompetent to stand trial. he's currently being treated at napa state hospital. goh stands accused of killing seven people at oikos university in april of last year following a dispute over tuition. 6:36. police looking for answers after the city's first homicide of the year in sunnyvale. police found a man shot just outside the peacock long bar near fremont high school around 1:00 yesterday morning. officers aren't saying how the man got there and they haven't made any arrests. another was wounded in the shooting and was treated and released from the hospital. 6:36 right now. still ahead, grenades, suicij.é vests and a large bomb. new details coming in about an attack targeting nato air force. nelson man dale la in the hospital for a third straight day. we'll update you on his condition next. right now we give you a live look at san francisco's mosconi

forecast, thunder, lightning, warmer temperatures. hang around at 6:39. new details at an attack at nalt toe headquarters in afghanistan. we know all seven taliban insurgents who carried out the attack are dead. they reportedly carried rocket propelled grenades and at least one large bomb. two attackers blew themselves up with suicide vests. five others were shot and killed by police. two civilians were injured in that attack. the airport was not damaged and remains open. this morning nelson mandela still in serious but stibl condition at a hospital in bre tore yeah, south africa. the 94-year-old nobel peace prize laureate being treated for a long infection. the south african president has been hospitalized several times in recent months, most recently back in april. at least 40 people are hurt after a bus slammed into a railway bridge in0gz germany. the double decker bus was carrying dozens of danish

pleading not guilty saying he acted in self-defense. >> jay gray joins us live outside the courthouse in sanford, florida, with a close are look at this case. good morning, jay. >> reporter: good morning, laura, good morning, jon. 500 summons sent to potential jurors here. they have started the process to bring that number down to six plus four alternates who will ultimately hear this high-profile case. >> reporter: the pool of potential jurors comes from a community that understands it's now back in the spotlight. >> the main thing is to have a fair trial and to select the people that are going to be fair and they're going to give the right choosing of the verdict. >> reporter: that might be a difficult task in a case that for more than a year now has been wrapped in considerable media coverage and at times -- >> what do we want? >> justice. >> when do we want it? >> now. >> reporter: controversy. >> the end of the day the need is not to find a jury with an empty mind, but a jury with an open mind. they may know something about

the case, but the key is whether they can make a fair and impartial decision based upon the evidence allowed in the courtroom. >> zimmerman had pled not guilty to a second degree murder charge telling police he fired the fatal shot that killed trayvon martin in self-defense during a fight he says initiated by the 17-year-old. >> he said, yo, you got a problem? i turned around and said, no, i don't have a problem, man. >> reporter: a probable cause affidavit filed by prosecutors says martin, quote, was profiled by george zimmerman who police say followed the teenager through his gated community despite this conversation with the police dispatcher. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> reporter: the defense says zimmerman stopped following martin and was on his way back to his car minutes before the deadly confrontation.0gz that's one of several questions at the center of this high profile case as jury selection begins today. that jury selection could last

and petaluma. associated with the stronger thunderstorm cells you could get caught up in brief heavy downpours, also gusty winds associated with the stronger cells. i want to show you san jose right now. a lot of this activity is falling apart even before it makes its way over the mountains and into the valley. stim give yourself extra time. it's one of those days. area of low pressure way to our south. that's driving in this moist, warm air from the subtropical latitudes. as that moist air comes into the bay area, it's colliding with our cool dry air mass. as a result you get those thunderstorms. we'll see 50s and 60s at the coast and around the bay. 50s and 60s for those of you inland. we'll cut off the chance for thunderstorms at about noon today. highs work out like this city by city, 76 in livermore, 67 in napa, 68 in oakland and 58 degrees in san francisco. you.o got through the hottest d of the year if you were here on saturday. we hit 111 in places like dublin. also we saw that in walnut creek.

what i can tell you is we're not going to see extreme heat like that for a while. we have a warming trend headed our way. each day this week packing on a few degrees of heat. another area of low pressure comes through that will drive your temperatures down. that heat breaks saturday into father's day. >> we'll start here on the peninsula, no major concerns as far as speeds go. all the way into san mateo, 280 we had a crash bound around 30 that caused a problem, a little slowing toward sfo. that crash has cleared. better news for the peninsula also. >> we'll get the south bay on our maps. 101 in capital expressway past sjc. >> also 87 and 85, showed the slowdown as well. the green on the maps, we show you the road weather index is tied in with the weather system. this shows the possibility for damp roads. there may be wet roads in those

spots because of earlier rainfall and systems that came through the area. a little more drying through 580 through livermore. slowing here. 680 really kicking it in for the last ten minutes, we see speeds down to about 50 as you're coming off that dublin interchange and towards sunol where we're seeing a lot more can congestion. 23, castro valley y slow as well as 880 south through hayward. a good volume coming through the area where there's low clouds and moisture. emeryville, we look toward the maze. also off of 580 from 24 toward the toll plaza. that's okay as far assign naj goes. the slow drive is here. if you're coming from oakland, let me show you what we found northbound. the signs are covered with graffiti, that's causing a problem if you try to weave your way around the area. you can see the direction for the interstates themselves. there's a problem and we're going to have to pay for that cleanup, guys. thank you very much, mike.

6:50. what started as a house fire in san francisco has now become a crime investigation. fire crews say they've found marijuana inside a burning home near golden gate park early this morning. tough to get to the flames because of all the marijuana in the back of the house. crews hauled away hundreds of pot plants from that home. no one was hurt. >> more details about a nootd fire, this one a limousine fire here in the bay area. the second in less than two months. this time that limousine burst into flames with a group of elderly women inside, heading from the rossmoor senior community in walnut creek up to a birthday party. christie smith is live at police headquarters where investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this could have had a horrible ending, several elderly women inside limousine when it burst into flames. a lot of them used walkers or canes. now fortunately everyone made it

out okay. walnut creek police are investigating the circumstances of this fire. they don't suspect anything criminal was going on. elaine lofchie was trying to celebrate her 90th birthday late sunday morning with six other friends and three caregivers. the car was ideaing at the curb when smoke started coming from the rear of it. then it burst into flames. one minute it was fine they say, the next total chaos. >> the driver got out immediately and said everybody out. i thought of what happened in san mateo. i'm a nurse and they were all nurses. &dn't believe this could happen. >> they say they were very thankful for the actions of their driver on the heels of the tragic limo fire on the san mateo bridge just last month that killed a new bride and her four friends. police have notified the chp. the chp has not finished that investigation. in this latest walnut creek fire the owner says this limousine is

only five years old and properly maintained and insured. after all this, believe it or not, ther women took a private car to that party and carried on. elaine is saying limo rides are probably out for her in the future. live in walnut creek, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> i don't blame her. thank you, christie. a court hearing is set today for a father who crashed his car into a tree in fremontu/0 killi his son and wife. witnesses say he was driving at possibly 100 miles per hour through fremont when he swerved his car and slammed into a tree. his son's car seat was thrown from the car killing the young boy instantly. the boy's mother died the next day from her injuries. a san leandro high school teacher accused of possessing child pornography will be arraigned this afternoon. police say richard styner

accidentally showed his class a naked picture of himself. when officers searched his school computer, they found child pornography. he's also charged with residential burglary. police say he broke into a woman's home last year and stole photographs of her and also stole her underwear. 6:54. a warning for women who use a popular hiking trail in the east bay. police say a man has been exposing himself to women on the iron horse regional trail in walnut creek. for the past four months, police say he's in his 20s, 5'10" with thain build and shoulder-length dirty blond hair. he sometimes wears a baseball cap. police say there's been six incidents reported so far. most happen in the late afternoon and early evening. san jose police investigating what could be the city's 24th homicide of the year. early saturday morning officers found a man suffering from visible injuries on indian broom drive just west of highway 101. an autopsy will soonm) reveal exactly how he died.

as of right now detectives are calling his death suspicious. 6:54, a recent run of violence is pushing public safety to the top of the priority liss in the this year's budget. bob redell live at san jose city hall where a hearing will be held tonight. what's the mayor saying about police officer pay and the fire department staffing? so many people have been talking about it? >> reporter: good morning, laura. mayor chuck reed believes police pay should go up, especially considering how low morale is and concerning the fact that there's an increasing number of homicides the city has to deal with. the city of san jose is on track to sur ras pass last year's number of murders which was a 20-year high. there are fewer officers on the street. many left the force because of the recent cuts in pay, cuts that mayor chuck reed had said were necessary to offset the increasing retirement cost. tonight the city council will discuss at a budget hearing how to restore some of that pay.

reed's proposal calls for an additional $16.5 million for officer wages which would amount to a 5% pay increase over the next two years and a one-time retention bonus of 4% in the third year. city councilman ash cal rah in a memo is proposing a 10% increase over the next two years which he believes is necessary to stop this exodus of officers moving to other departments that pay better. >> is this dead on arrival? >> it's way, way beyond reasonable. no one wants to close half the libraries and half the community centers to give the police officers a raise. >> that was mayor chuck reed disagreeing with cal rah's proposal saying it'st to ix pe sive. the mayor proposing a spending increase of $8 million to help maintain staffing at the fire departments. tonight the city council will vote on these proposals to
