described his condition as serious but stable. in the short statement, he called on people here to pray for nelson mandela. only the closest to nelson mandela are visiting him in the hospital according to one south african newspaper today. there must be no distractions, the paper says, as doctors treat him for a lung infection. his children and grandchildren visited the hospital where he is thought to be treated, and the presidential spokesman announced his condition got worse. >> his condition deteriorated to where it found it was found necessary to hospitalize him. he is in a hospital now, and the doctor's report that his condition is serious but that he is stable. >> nelson mandela's lungs have been weakened while a political prisoner. he is 94 now and his country

worries, shocked by pictures filmed by the south african broadcasting system with him looking frail. >> it's right in the middle, and all of us should be worried. >> reporter: another long-time friend telling a newspaper it's time to let nelson mandela go, but all across south africa, prayers for the father of the nation. nelson mandela fought to end the oppression of his people and now facing a different fight. perhaps we don't reflect enough on the sacrifice his family made while he was fighting and they were without him for the 27 years he was in prison, and now they face this difficult time. the president is calling on people to pray for his family, too. >> thank you so much. we are following breaking news in afghanistan.

a violent attack in kabul this morning, and natalie is here with that story. >> an attack on the headquarters in kabul as coalition troops stop the ambush. duncan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. we are well into the taliban spring offensive. most are deadly for afghans and the international soldiers here, but this morning things were different. the people of kabul woke to the sound of another brazen taliban attack on their city. afghan forces pounded the building where insurgents were holed up with weapons and explosives which they brought in this truck. locals told me how they had to hide indoors. >> there were lots of explosions and attacks. >> reporter: they were targeting the airport bases, telling nbc

unlike most cases. 500 perspective jurors have been called to the courthouse, and from that they will pick six jurors and alternates. they say jury selection could take two weeks and maybe even longer. george zimmerman walked into the courtroom and his wife at his side, and as he has done in the past, he is wearing a bullet proof chest. 29-year-old george zimmerman admits he shot and killed trayvon martin. >> grabbed my firearm and shot him one time. >> reporter: but zimmerman who was a member of the neighborhood watch has claimed it was in self-defense and plead not guilty. trayvon martin stopped in the

7-eleven to buy a candy and an arizona tea. the dispatcher gave zimmerman instructions. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> we don't need you to do that. >> still, they wound up face-to-face and in the background of a neighbor's 911 call, screaming. prosecutors and his parents say that's trayvon martin. >> that's trayvon's voice. >> trayvon. >> you both know that without a shadow of a doubt? >> without a shadow of a doubt. >> the defense said that could be zimmerman, since they say his head was smashed into the concrete by martin. and after the police set zimmerman free, thousands protested that had zimmerman been black and trayvon martin white the investigation would not have wrapped up so quickly without an arrest.

>> i honestly think this is a civil rights/equal justice issue, because everybody in the world is watching to see if everybody in america gets equal justice. >> reporter: zimmerman's attorneys disagree. >> i would say george's rights could be hurt. >> reporter: prospective jurors' identities will remain a secret. >> lisa, a legal analyst, and good morning to you. this case made national headlines for more than a year, has media coverage already influenced this jury? >> it probably has to some extent, but that's why we are going to have such an extensive jury selection process where the judge will carefully question all the potential jurors to where whether there is any media influence and throughout the trial i think the judge will continue to ask questions about whether they are watching tv or following the case on the internet.

>> one side already requested there has been a see questation of the jurors that they are kept behind closed doors for how long it will take to finish this trial. how likely is that? >> so far the judge is not going to do that. they cannot talk to friends or family or go to work and read media, and i don't expect them to do that. >> this could take a week or two weeks, and if you were going through the process for either side, what would you be looking for in a juror? >> i think the prosecution wants real law and order types that will follow the prosecution as they go through the evidence establishing it element by element, and they will want independent thinkers those that will hold out for acquittal. we have a lot of racial

stereotypes, and this is a case now what happened moment by moment in an altercation between these two men. each side will look for people that will follow their story. >> a lot of interesting and contentious pieces of evidence. what are the strongest evidences for both sides? >> for the prosecution, an audio recording at the prosecution says is trayvon martin in the final moments of his life screaming and begging for his life, and that would contradict zimmerman's story. and the judge is going to rule on that soon. and for the defense, the strongest piece of evidence is zimmerman himself on the police interrogation tape, and he is clearly cooperating with law enforcement the day after the shooting trying to tell his story, and i think he comes across as very reasonable.

with the struggles of the largest breast cancer charity, susan g. komen for the cure faced backlash last year when it tried to pull funding for planned parenthood. experts are questioning how much only can is paying its ceo -- komen is paying its ceo. lisa myers has more. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning. some of komen's local affiliates tell nbc that so far race participation and donations are down again this year. records show komen's founder and ceo is enjoying a pay package that raises eyebrows in the nonprofit world. this year's global race for the cure. [ cheers ] >> reporter: founder nancy brinker is still ceo even though komen announced she would be stepping aside ten months ago. >> i believe we will defeat breast cancer. >> reporter: the group's financial report reveals she's received a 64% raise for a total pay package of $684,000 for the latest period on record.

ken burger heads a charity watchdog group. >> this pay package is way outside the norm. it's about a quarter of a million dollars more than what we see for charities of this size. >> reporter: a spokesperson for komen and brinker said she was awarded the raise if 2010in 2010 after conferring with pay consultant. that was after only can's noon stop funding planned parenthood backfired. she said brinker has had no raise since. brinker's continued presence long after komen said she would be stepping aside has fueled distrust among former donors like stacey tillman. >> it's lying to your supporters and it's lying to the people who were upset with you to begin with. >> reporter: last week komen canceled half of its three-day walks around the country, blaming the economy for a sharp drop in participation. nbc news learned that komen's flagship race for the cure also is still struggling in some areas. the global race in d.c. down from $5 million two years ago, to $2.5 million this year.

to death. >> you get a real insight into this relationship you had with lib liberace. you came from this troubled background. he was 40 years older than you. what's your perspective now on that relationship? >> i think that you know i was so young at the time i don't think it would go over too well today. i think you could possibly go to jail for something like that. >> i think there's a sense from quite a bit of my problems with the plastic surgeries with the drug addiction, i don't think anybody in life sets out to be an adikt and we did stupid things. it's been a marvelous life. i love him and he's a wonderful guy. >> the plastic surgery is one of the most memorable things from the story. and in the movie, your character barely seems to object. >> well i mean matt damon did -- what a wonderful job.

the idea of a family reunion sounds great but it can be daunting. you want something to break the ice. we'll have you put on your glasses. >> how do you play? >> the idea is to cut someone -- the girls are going to ask you, how many blue cards do you have natalie. >> four. >> do you believe her? >> no. >> no. >> so how many do you actually have. >> two. >> so we have to add another nose for that. >> so you're like pinocio. >> the idea is to get rid of all of your cards. you can take them off now. >> you have to be careful with competition. >> right. now you have to understand what kind of family you have. some kids families thrive on competition and some are more cooperative. this is a beautiful puzzle and the idea is to make this a multigenerational activity.

grandma and grand pa teamed up with other family members and you can have a puzzle champion. >> that's good for all ages too. >> right. now you have stack up that they're playing, they're cooperative going to start stacking up the pieces of the game. >> it's for the younger set. >> you could play with this younger siblings as well. it's a fun game and they have to do different things. they have to sing while they play. >> it's great activities. >> crafting is a great way to keep kids occupied. >> especially with teens. so these guys are going to move over while we're doing this but this is an extreme sticker set. >> the next section. >> creativity for kids. kids can create and give stickers out for pictures of your family members. >> friendship bracelets are huge. >> it comes with four different ones and it's a great activity and you can have a family bracelet at the end of the day. >> okay we need picture takers

over here. >> it's great for family reunions and family events. >> right. >> you can do that -- that costs a lot of money but you can do it easily. >> we did it with balloons here to have our family picture taken. are you going to take the picture? there we go. we can have a family picture here. put up a sign particular for that day. great for teenagers that can create their own facebook page. it incorporates them into the activities of the day. there we go. excellent. >> how about scavenger hunts? >> i love them. it's a classic game and you can mix up the families and you can do this one which is inside or make up your own indoor or outdoor activities. i love volleyball. it's a big sport for a lot of people to play. but to make it more fun for younger members of the family and younger is a big beach ball so the idea is to use a volleyball instead of a hard

by the age of 10 i had developed ulceritis colight. i thought i was fat, though and so a lifetime of disordered eating began along with several chronic illnesses. by the age of 34 i was also obese. but established in my acting career. i had a resume with five broadway shows and i even played mrs. claus in the radio city christmas spectacular. but i was miserable. my health was continually declining and each time i stepped on to a broadway stage, i wondered is this the night they cart me out of here in an ambulance? finally, i woke up and i got to work. i made small, fun, gentle changes to my everyday patterns and 2 1/2 years later, i was down 100 pounds. but the real story here is that i have successfully kept the weight off for over five years. not only that i have reversed

all of my previous health problems, too. i was chronically ill for over 25 years, but now, i haven't been sick in over four years. even better than that? i found my new passion. i'm now a health coach. and i use my story as inspir tigs ation to show you can get well and part of that is being a healthy weight. >> how inspiring. we're here with the leader of the joy fit pack. he's staying stateside and showing us some of his favorite country southern dishes. >> good morning, ladies. >> the beautiful part of this is that it's traditional low country, southern fare meant to be served family style. super fresh. ultra seasonal. the south is really the italy of america. and so you can use a scissor and take the veins out of these really large shrimp. it's very, very simple to do. would you join me over here and dump those in. >> all of them? >> all of them. >> leave the head or the tail? >> you cook them this way so the sauce gates s gets in there and so much of the flavor is in the shell and the head. marjorim peppers. you dump the peppercorns and the bay. i'll squeeze the lemon. when this comes to a boil you stir it two or three times. now you can smell that marjorim and lemon. the minute that hits the water -- i'm going to borrow this from you. this comes to a boil.

stir it three times and pour it through a strainer. the most important thing to do is to remove the chilis especially if you have kids or people that don't like spicy food. >> so it's's hint of the spice. >> it gives you enough. you can always chop those up and add them. then if you will spill that gently into that big bowl right there -- >> good girl. >> i am going to mix our seasoning. more lemons. and i just give it a squeeze. i add some green onions. we make this every week in my show -- in my house. this is dill sugar lemon juice, oil and we're just going to give that a gentle stir. and it came with the last quarter cup of drippings from the shrimp. and then -- >> look how good that looks. i'm sorry. i'm totally in. >> everybody is drooling. it looks amazing. >> you let this sit about 20 minutes at room temperature to allow the pickling effect from the lemon and the sugar and the salt to go into the shrimp.
