described his condition as serious but stable. in the short statement, he called on people here to pray for nelson mandela. only the closest to nelson mandela are visiting him in the hospital according to one south african newspaper today. there must be no distractions, the paper says, as doctors treat him for a lung infection. his children and grandchildren visited the hospital where he is thought to be treated, and the presidential spokesman announced his condition got worse. >> his condition deteriorated to where it found it was found necessary to hospitalize him. he is in a hospital now, and the doctor's report that his condition is serious but that he is stable. >> nelson mandela's lungs have been weakened while a political prisoner. he is 94 now and his country

a violent attack in kabul this morning, and natalie is here with that story. >> an attack on the headquarters in kabul as coalition troops stop the ambush. duncan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. we are well into the taliban spring offensive. most are deadly for afghans and the international soldiers here, but this morning things were different. the people of kabul woke to the sound of another brazen taliban attack on their city. afghan forces pounded the building where insurgents were holed up with weapons and explosives which they brought in this truck. locals told me how they had to hide indoors. >> there were lots of explosions and attacks. >> reporter: they were targeting the airport bases, telling nbc

unlike most cases. 500 perspective jurors have been called to the courthouse, and from that they will pick six jurors and alternates. they say jury selection could take two weeks and maybe even longer. george zimmerman walked into the courtroom and his wife at his side, and as he has done in the past, he is wearing a bullet proof chest. 29-year-old george zimmerman admits he shot and killed trayvon martin. >> grabbed my firearm and shot him one time. >> reporter: but zimmerman who was a member of the neighborhood watch has claimed it was in self-defense and plead not guilty. trayvon martin stopped in the

>> one side already requested there has been a see questation of the jurors that they are kept behind closed doors for how long it will take to finish this trial. how likely is that? >> so far the judge is not going to do that. they cannot talk to friends or family or go to work and read media, and i don't expect them to do that. >> this could take a week or two weeks, and if you were going through the process for either side, what would you be looking for in a juror? >> i think the prosecution wants real law and order types that will follow the prosecution as they go through the evidence establishing it element by element, and they will want independent thinkers those that will hold out for acquittal. we have a lot of racial

stereotypes, and this is a case now what happened moment by moment in an altercation between these two men. each side will look for people that will follow their story. >> a lot of interesting and contentious pieces of evidence. what are the strongest evidences for both sides? >> for the prosecution, an audio recording at the prosecution says is trayvon martin in the final moments of his life screaming and begging for his life, and that would contradict zimmerman's story. and the judge is going to rule on that soon. and for the defense, the strongest piece of evidence is zimmerman himself on the police interrogation tape, and he is clearly cooperating with law enforcement the day after the shooting trying to tell his story, and i think he comes across as very reasonable.

with the struggles of the largest breast cancer charity, susan g. komen for the cure faced backlash last year when it tried to pull funding for planned parenthood. experts are questioning how much only can is paying its ceo -- komen is paying its ceo. lisa myers has more. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning. some of komen's local affiliates tell nbc that so far race participation and donations are down again this year. records show komen's founder and ceo is enjoying a pay package that raises eyebrows in the nonprofit world. this year's global race for the cure. [ cheers ] >> reporter: founder nancy brinker is still ceo even though komen announced she would be stepping aside ten months ago. >> i believe we will defeat breast cancer. >> reporter: the group's financial report reveals she's received a 64% raise for a total pay package of $684,000 for the latest period on record.

he's staying stateside and showing us some of his favorite country southern dishes. >> good morning, ladies. >> the beautiful part of this is that it's traditional low country, southern fare meant to be served family style. super fresh. ultra seasonal. the south is really the italy of america. and so you can use a scissor and take the veins out of these really large shrimp. it's very, very simple to do. would you join me over here and dump those in. >> all of them? >> all of them. >> leave the head or the tail? >> you cook them this way so the sauce gates s gets in there and so much of the flavor is in the shell and the head. marjorim peppers. you dump the peppercorns and the bay. i'll squeeze the lemon. when this comes to a boil you stir it two or three times. now you can smell that marjorim and lemon. the minute that hits the water -- i'm going to borrow this from you. this comes to a boil.
