this morning for the 29-year-old at the center of the nsa case. edward snowden had been holed up at a hong kong hotel since handing over secret government documents to journalists. his current whereabouts are unknown. authorities back home are ramping up an investigation in the case against him. on monday, investigators showed up at snowden's mother's house in maryland and at his father's house in pennsylvania. they didn't say who or what they were looking for. this as the new pew/washington post poll shows most americans seem to back the programs that snowden is publicizing. 50% consider the phone tracking to be an acceptable form of government action. now that number grows when asked if investigating terroristic threats is more important than their individual privacy. those numbers come as congress prepares to receive a closed door briefing on those leaks. nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington. tracie, what do we know about this briefing? >> reporter: the house gets a briefing today and all members

of the house, all 435 of them, are allowed to attend. we don't know yet who those briefers are. the senate will get its briefing on thursday and also word the house intelligence committee may at some point this week be holding a hearing. that's what sources are telling us. we don't have further confirmation on when that might actually take place. we do know that lawmakers have some very different opinions here about what's been happening with the secret surveillance programs and with edward snowden. dianne feinstein called nim a traitor. others think he's a hero. we saw some protests in new york. the big question this morning, where is he? overnight he checked out of his hong kong hotel and authorities have been launching a worldwide man hunt for him. they've seen his mother. they've gon his mother's home, his father's home. the fbi trying to track him down. but there are those here who support edward snowden. in fact, as of this morning, almost 42,000 people had signed a white house petition asking

president obama to pardon him. richard? >> tracie potts in washington, thank you, with the latest there for us. now to shocking allegations of misconduct by state department personnel including at least one ambassador and reports that high level officials interfered with ensuing investigations. nbc news has obtained documents revealing members of the state department and an unnamed ambassador were accused of improper and in many cases illegal conduct, including engaging prostitutes, pedophilia, sexual assault, unexplained fatal shottings, participation in an underground drug ring and unauthorized information leaks. the documents alleged top state department officials interfered with the investigations. former state department investigator turned whistleblower arelia fenison claims the investigations have not been thorough. pressure from high yielding

official officials and said they ignored any criminal conduct. >> i'm not going to talk about specific cases, but i can say broadly that the notion that we would not vigorously pursue criminal misconduct in any case is preposterous. a grilling for potential jurors in george zimmerman's second-degree murder trial. their selection hinges on what they know about the case and if they could keep an open mind. zimmerman has pleaded not guilty claiming self-defense in the death of unarmed 17-year-old trayvon martin. nbc's ron mott joins us live in sanford, florida, with more. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's day two of the state of florida versus george zimmerman. if day one is any indication, this is going to be a pretty long process. over the course of about three hours, lawyers for the state and for george zimmerman questioned four potential jurors. that's just four. that's an average of 1 every 45 minutes.

as you know, 500 prospective jurors are in this pool. this process could take a while, which is why it could take three weeks to get this jury. we expect the judge to resume a hearing which is crucial because she's going to make a determination about whether audio experts and their testimony about that 911 call will be allowed in court. we do expect that tape to be played but whether the experts can weigh in on what they hear or what they may not hear is still yet to be decided by this judge. >> ron mott in sanford, florida. george zimmerman has sued nbc universal, the parent company of this network, for defamation. the company strongly denies his allegations. now for a look at the weather, nbc meteorologist bill karins joins us right now. it's getting kind of warm back west. >> a lot of places are still hot. all the cool air is in the east. the warm air is trying to move into the cooler air.

that's always a recipe for disaster. this is a powerful tornado. winds 135 miles per hour. just north of the tennessee/kentucky border. went through some farm country. injured a couple people and knocked down a couple of homes and a barn. did take a toll on farm animals. and a lot of cleanup from that storm. now yesterday in the west, another hot day. we have a heat watch in effect for the phoenix area as we go throughout the day into tomorrow. 109 in phoenix yesterday. 101 in vegas. notice we're much cooler, coastal california and the northwest. so what is the weather pattern today. not really changed much for the desert southwest. the upper level low is moving into idaho. another weak low off the washington coast is bringing a few showers on to the coastal areas. we could see a hit or miss shower from i-5 northwards from portland, olympia, through bellingham. it's not going to be a lot of wet weather. we'll see clouds. coastal areas of california, kind of locked in as we go throughout the day today. you have to be more interior sections to get some of that

riot police and protesters in turkey's capital. police used teargas and rubber bullets to push into a park where demonstrators have been camping out. at least three people have been killed and more than 5,000 injured since anti-government protests erupts may 31st. death by stiletto. a texas woman is facing murder charges this morning after police say she stabbed a man in a high-rise apartment building. her alleged weapon of choice? a stiletto heel. she's claiming self-defense. after lawsuits on behalf two of children needing organ transplants, health officials are changing policies. the organ procurement and transplantation network will allow patients 12 and younger to have cases reviewed by a national board of surgeons. previous rules barred children under that age from applying to receive adult lungs. the senate is scheduled to vote today on moving forward with a bipartisan overhaul of the imgragss laws. among other things, the bill would allow a pathway to citizenship for some 11 million

undocumented immigrants. hillary clinton can add twitter user to her resume after joining the social network on monday. she describes herself as a wife and mom and a hair icon and pantsuit aficionado. and up, up and away. this morning a chinese rocket carrying three astronauts began a 15-day mission to dock with the space lab in orbit. the trio, which includes china's second female astronaut, will conduct dozens of space experiments. people of all ages including minors will have over the counter access to the so-called morning after pill. this after the justice department decided to drop its appeal afr court ruling that would allow unrestricted sales of the emergency contraceptive. until now, the pill was only available without a prescription to women 15 and older. the u.s. to stable from negative. good news on the hiring front. a new survey from manpower group shows more employers plan to hire more workers over the next three months than in any other period since late 2008. boeing has upgraded its 20-year forecast for airplane demand. the company says the airlines will need over 35,000 new jets worth approximately $4.8 trillion as the world's fleet doubles over the next two decades. apple has unveiled a new streaming music service called itunes radio. it's also showing off the biggest redesign of their operating system since the iphone was introduced just six years ago. the senate has passed a five-year $500 billion farm bill while making cuts to food stamps. sony's new playstation 4 taking direct aim at microsoft xbox. the ps4 will cost $399. that's 20% less than the xbox and it doesn't require an internet connection. starting next season, the

now to a story we're following closely overseas. the south african government is calling nelson mandela's condition unchanged. but this morning there's new extra security has been added to the hospital where the former president is spending a fourth day. nbc's rohit cotru joins us from pretoria. >> good morning, richard. senior members of the mandela family have streamed in and out of the hospital over the last 24 hours. we believe that mr. mandela's wife has been with him at his bedside for much of the time since he was rushed here early on saturday morning. yesterday we saw his former wife winnie mandela accompanied by their daughter. then another daughter. and that's significant because she's south africa's ambassador argentina and she flew overnight to be here with him at his bedside. the updates from government officials here have been fairly gloomy talking about him being
