a firefighter at this hour recovering after being injured in that house fire in san francisco's bayview district. this fire started about 2:30 this morning and quickly spread to a second home on hudson avenue near third street. "today in the bay's" christie smith has been at the scene all morning long covering it for us. she joins us live with the latest information she's gotten from firefighters. goode/q morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, jon. firefighters finally had a chance to go inside and take a look at this home that burned. i just spoke with one of the firefighters. he's telling me when they first arrived the flames were so big they didn't even know what was burning. it started on this one side here, a vacant home, and spread to another one right across the way. an 85-year-old woman was inside with five other family members including a 5-year-old child. neighbors were yelling. they smelled smoke. this was overnight on hudson street in the bayview district. firefighters say there was a carport and a fence that burned and a lot in between the two

homes. again, one of them vacant but stuffed with items. i was talking to a neighbor. he said there was a lot of tvs here and other things. they would see people come and go. one firefighter called it suspicious. another one said in his opinion it's just interesting. i just spoke to odessa island who had to run for her life. >> can we ask you what you were doing? >> in the bed sleeping. >> how did you know it was a fire? >> my granddaughter was up looking at tv and she smelled something. she looked out, a lot of light outside. she said oh, it's a fire, it's a fire. look, look. get up and get out of this house. >> reporter: now, if steve can pan over here and show you this balcony. there are stairs attached to that. that's actually what collapsed when a firefighter was walking

on them. he hurt his knee. he was taken to the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. i have some updated numbers for you. earlier they said they thought six people were displaced. now they're telling me it's actually ten. they are getting help from the red cross. they're also telling me as far as this house here, the vacant one. they think the damage estimate is about $250,000. for this one here, this is where odessa allen lived, about $175,000. those folks who are displaced are getting help from the red cross and neighbors this morning. live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." more breaking news now, this time in san jose where a warning is going out to students after a man exposed himself to a female student overnight on campus. "today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us at san jose state with new details for us. what have you learned? >> reporter: good morning. right away i wanted to show you the alert text message that went out to all students at san jose state. it says this indecent exposure

incident happened at 9:50 last night right in front of duncan hall where we are on san salvador street. it says the suspect exposed himself to a female and fled. the suspect's description, hispanic man in his 20s wearing a teal hat with a white shirt and jeans. pretty limited suspect description. i've been in touch with san jose state media here, the public information officer. she tells me she's working to get a more intense suspect description for us this morning. i also wanted to point out right away that the pio stressed that she believes this is an isolated incident, not a serial incident, rather an isolated incident that happened here last night about -- just before 10:00. it's also important to note that classes are out of session for the summer. so it may not have involved a student in any case because students are not here. there are 30,000 students enrolled at san jose state.

during the school year, in the summertime, no students are here. there are about 2,000 employees. it could have involved an employee here for this indecent exposure. san jose state police are taking this seriously. they're saying they're on high alert and we're in touch with them this morning. i'll have more information for you at the end of the hour. live from san jose state, marla tellez, "today in the bay." new details this morning, just a matter of hours from now, the santa clara county d.a. outlining thefd largest gang bu in santa clara history. bob redell is live in san jose with what else the d.a. is expected to reveal this morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. a news conference that's supposed to be taking place in about 4 1/2 hours, lasting an hour long here at the d.a.'s office, the d.a. himself expe expected to outline his case against nuestra familia. this is a gang in the south bay,

a gang that's been busted in the largest gang bust of its kind in santa clara county history. grand jury indicted 39 men and nine women and charged them with 77 crimes they allege took place between 2010 and may 30th of this year. the charges include a murder, drug dealing, weapons and at least six bank robberies. in one robbery that took place at the alliance federal credit union that used to be located in that strip mall near snell and blossom hill, the indictment charges that one of the members, a woman, threatened to blow the bank up with employees inside with a bomb that turned out to be fake. a couple weeks after that, another defendant robbed a bank of america branch also on snell. an attorney for two defendants tells bay city news service she believes this gang bust is, quote, politically charged. live in san jose, bob redell,

"today in the bay." that indictment comes as san jose is poised to approve a budget to put more officers on the streets. today the city council will vote on a budget that includes millions of extra dollars for police and firefighters. mayor chuck reed wants to spend the money to hire new police officers, hire community service officers and fund police over time and gang prevention units. officers are leaving faster than they can be replaced. an alarming new trend to tell you about happening on muni buses. the agency is trying to figure out why riders are kicking open the rear doors and jumping out while the bus is still rolling. this has happened 15 times over the past week and a half. each time those buses were immediately pulled out of service and inspected for damage. standing riders -- stranding riders and costing the agency a lot more money. this has been an ex-poen sive thing to put a handle on.

police say it's a criminal offense and they plan to increase their presence on the bus linesr>ñ by using plainclot officers. 6:08. time to check in with meteorologist christina loren. nice day on tap. >> beautiful day. good morning to you. you know we're traditionally seeing this time of weather, june gloom, of course. this is the golden gate bridge. you know when you wake up with this sight, low clouds overhead as far to the east as sunol, livermore, danville, that it's going to be a comfortable afternoon. we need the low clouds, the natural cooling to keep us cool in the heat of the day. that is going to be the case today. it's going to take a while to burn off. 59 degrees in san jose. stop the clock on your futurecast between now and 9:00 a.m., the fog will be at the thickest, filling in most of the san francisco bay and all the way through the delta, we'll see the cool air move through. by about 11:00, mostly sunshine on tap. comfortable weather as well. we'll heat you up towards the end of the week.

enjoy 81 degrees. inlandçv' 72. san francisco a little chilly, but will warm up. give and take in the temperature department. who is going to get the best? i'll show you exactly when and where coming up in my seven-day forecast. want to check your drive, backing up. >> exactly. that's the bay bridge backup which we have. the metering lights will%)ñ turn before 6:00. that's typical for traffic tuesday. seeing a lytle flow of traffic overall. here are the metering lights, faster than we typically see. you can see the fast track lanes in the fray that are moving visibly there. we'll show you in the area traffic flows through the area heading north past the coliseum without issue. here north of the san mateo bridge, in hayward we have a crash over on the shoulder. all the activity now moved over, northbound no slowing, southbound does start to build with that commute. near the area, the surface streets we have a crash here involving a parked car.

it does sound like the intersection is open. no injuries to report. also north of there we're looking at slowing for 238 off the castro valley y. dublin interchange moving nicely right now and very light for a traffic tuesday. seeing 580 only slowing at the most part around vasco. dublin and pleasant ton. highway 84, smooth drive into the south bay. live look for san jose shows the traffic flowing nicely here at 680, a couple of slow spots but nothing really of note. drive is lighter than a typical week. we're also showing the traffic farther north from there. let's look at the peninsula, 101 moving smoothly through palo alto. we're looking for they are north for 101 and 280, no problems into or out of san francisco. it is 6:10 right now. coming up, an international manhunt to try to stop a whistle-blower on the run. we have new details about where

firefighter in san francisco's bayview district. this one broke out early this morning at a vacant home also damaging a neighboring home. the firefighter was apparently injured when a set of stairs collapsed. the santa clara county district attorney will announce the biggest gang bust in county history this morning. grand jury is indicting 48 alleged gang members accused of selling drugs, robbing banks and committing murder. the announcement is expected at 10:30 this morning. an international manhunt still under way for eric snowden. he is the man who says he leaked information about top secret u.s. surveillance programs. a criminal investigation also under way, but so far no charges have been brought against snowden and no warrant has been issued. new this morning, we can tell you a white house petition right now asking the president to meet with snowden. we actually checked. it has thousands of signatures. scott mcgrew, the petition written by one of the president's biggest supporters. >> yeah. it was the same young man who convinced the government to

unlock your cell phone through an online petition. now he wants the president to meet with the nsa leaker for a debate. he's turned into quite the online activist. his petitions have forced the white house to respond. it's highly unlikely this one is going to work. let's face it. snowden probably would not want to get anywhere near washington. civil liberties groups are a bit concerned we the press are spending more time talking about snou den than the nsa. they're concerned the whistle-blower is getting more attention than the revelation of the biggest domestic spying program in american history. facebook holds its first shareholder meeting ever at a hotel in millbrae. publicly held companies, companies that sell stock have to have a meeting once a year. we do expect protests outside the westin hotel as environmentalists are upset with facebook founder mark zuckerberg. his political action committee called forward u.s. has

bankrolled several political ads for conservative politicians like this one for lindsey graham of south carolina. senator graham supports sucker berg's push for immigration reform. so zuckerberg's group helped him fund his ads supporting his opposition -- his support to the excel keystone pipeline. bottom line is sort of the friend of my friend -- how does it go? the enemy of my enemy is my friend. something along those lines. they're upset with zuckerberg and we expect protests outside that meeting. >> all right. one we'll watch. thank you very much. two east bay high schools are considering changes to their graduation ceremonies after several students and family members were over come by intense heat this weekend. the liberty union high school district is planning to make the changes at freedom high school in oakley and heritage high school in brentwood. the district says it may start holding graduation ceremonies at the two schools in the evening rather than in the morning.

25 people at the two schools had to be treated for heat exhaustion on saturday. at least a dozen of them were taken to area hospitals. >> the discussion coming after a plaser county high school called off its graduation ceremony because of all that heat. the ceremony had started at del oro high school in loomis when people started getting sick and actually fainting in the heat. the school principal and local fire chief decided to call off the event and have the rest of the students -- they had the rest of the students pick up their diplomas this week. >> they got to the ds and said no more. you still graduate. you were mentioning how hot it was weekend. >> oppressive heat. summertime officially starts in ten days. we haven't hit summertime yet. our air quality was very poor on saturday. this morning, quite the contrary. we have beautiful air quality thanks to the showers that came through yesterday. onshore flow has resumed, but, of course, whenever you consider

all those low clouds right up against the coastline, right now 30 to "60 minutes." check ahead with your carrier and also you'll find delays trying to get over to new york city as they're still dealing with the weather system in that area as well. temperatures are nice and comfortable. 56 in san francisco. uniform numbers just about, 59 in san jose and 57 in livermore with a full deck of clouds all the way inland this morning. those low clouds are going to keep us nice and comfortable this afternoon as high pressure starts to move closer and closer to the bay area. this is going to take control of our weather pattern today. we're not even going to hit the mid 80s potentially until thursday. then closer to 90 degrees by friday. for today, what you can count on, 50s and 60s at the coast. 60s and 70s around the band 70s and 80s inland. 81 in livermore, 76 in san jose. 62 degrees today in san francisco. comfortable conditions for today.

for your traffic tuesday. the rest of your south bay not experiencing much of a slowdown. seeing a little lighter volume, we've seen a lot of graduations over the last few weeks, school is getting out, means the shift in the traffic flow. south 280 past page hill. that is slowing. it was a little worse a few minutes ago. but early, about an hour and a half, two hours ago, there were reports of a small brush fire. we've heard nothing since and no lanes closed. i'm tracking that, tracking that at the news desk as well. so far nothing additional reported through the area. 101 and 280, nice drive at the peninsula, at the limit there. the dumbarton bridge is very clear view, smooth flow of traffic. lighter volume overall like we talked about. slowing southbound 880 through hayward, northbound where we had the earlier crash where they pulled over the shoulder, not a big deal. gentle build for the castro valley y, gentle considering it's tuesday with heavier volume of traffic expected, but we're

it's 6:24. we've got an update for you this morning on the condition of former south african president nelson mandela. minutes ago the south african government reiterated mandela is in serious condition but stable. the nobel peace prize laureate is being treated for a lung infection. his family is by his side and nbc reporters in south africa says security outside the hospital has been boosted. in capitol hill today lawmakers voting on a bipartisan immigration reform bill. that bill features a 13-year path to citizenship for immigrants currently in the country illegally. the president expected to throw his weight behind this bill this morning during a speech being held at the white house. >> this morning the fbi joining phoenix police to investigate a phoned bomb threat against southwest airlines flight. the plane had been on its way to austin, texas, from l.a. when it was diverted to phoenix

yesterday afternoon. a bomb squad has been searching the plane in an isolated place away from terminals. all passengers are being interviewed. in ohio, federal agents and prosecutors set to go inside a cleveland home where three women were held captive for about a decade. this is about the very first time prosecutors will get to go inside that home and see the living conditions the three women were subjected to. they are getting all set for tomorrow when accused kidnapper and rapist ariel castro is expected to be in court to answer to 329 criminal charges including murder, kidnapping and rape. a houston woman says she was trying to defend herself when she stabbed her boyfriend to death with a stiletto heel. anna trujillo is charged with murder in the death of 59-year-old alf anderson, a research professor at the university of houston. she called 911 sunday from anderson's luxury condo to

find out,000 markets will react. the stock market indirect, a mix yesterday. we'll find out soon how things are looking for today. good morning everybody. on june 11, this is "today in the bay." i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news to tell you about. crews still on scene in a san francisco neighborhood after a fire breaks out early this morning damaging a couple of homes. the homes were -- the fire started in this home, it's vacant and the flames forced a family next door to evacuate. one firefighter was injured when a staircase inside that home collapsed, but the firefighter is expected to recover. right now we have a live look for you at that scene after the flames. firefighters still watching out there being very careful checking for hot spots. that's where "today in the bay's" christie smith has been there all morning long talking to investigators. she will have an update for us in about 15 minutes. 6:30.

this morning we're learning more about the man who says he leaked top secret information about a top secret government surveillance program. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us on capitol hill with a look at the international manhunt under way right now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. where is edward snowden. the fbi has been to his mother's house near here in maryland. they've been to his father's house in pennsylvania trying to background this former cia employee and figure out where he may go next. he told "the guardian" newspaper saying he had been hiding out in a hotel room in hong kong but he checked out last night. now the feds are on his trail trying to find him because they're concerned. if he's willing to give up this information to journalists, who else might he be talking to willingly or even unwillingly. here today on capitol hill we're going to have a briefing for house members on what's been happening. senators get their briefing coming up on thursday and this

may not be over. first the guardian revealed information about phone records and then e-mails. now the reporter who was behind breaking those stories says he's got more documents. there's more to come, laura. >> thank you very much, tracie. 6:32. a bay area lawmaker introducing new legislation following two frightening limousine fires in the past month. is a the bill would require the passenger compartment inuhp&l limousines to have at least two exit doors and two windows that can be pus]$ out from the inside. the move coming just days after a group of elderly women safely escaped a limousine fire in walnut creek and just a month after five women died in this limousine fire on the san mateo bridge. corbett says the death of those women could have been prevented. the fight is not over between the town of los gatos and gun retailer templar sports.

los gatos shop posted this on its facebook page. it claims the town's plan for a firearm ordinance would possibly prevent the shop from selling guns in the future. the firearm ordinance was introduced on friday. it will require all shops selling firearms in los gatos to apply for a permit and require an annual meeting for permit renewal. templar sports says this new ordinance would not grandfather the shop in despite already having a permit to sell guns. a peninsula city later on talking about how to make a buys zi street safe for residents in belmont, petitioning the city council to improve safety along a stretch of wall stop avenue between 101 and =280, the petition calling for speed limit changes, bike lanes and a crosswalk with blinking lights. a man started this petition after his friend and her daughter were hit by a car on the road back in february. the city council right now conducting a traffic study on

breaking news out of atlanta. reports of explosion at a maintenance shet at hartsfield airport. concourse d has been evacuated. so far no reports of injuries or a fire. there are reports the power is out in that concourse. at least five people are dead after part of a four-story building collapsed in mumbai.

rescuers are using sensors to try to find five people who could still be trapped inside. another six people are hurt. the area has been hit hard by monsoons lately. it's not clear if the weather what caused that building to collapse. early this morning, hundreds of police in riot gear forcing themselves through barricades pushing protesters out of istanbul's central square. the pro toasts have been happening in turkey for more than a week now ever sings a violent police crack down on a peaceful sit-in at a park in that square. the sit-in was protesting the government's plan to cut down trees in the park. it's now grown to a wider protest of heavyhanded police cac ticks and authoritarian government policies. a safety alert for san jose students alone on campus. a firefighter injured as flames rip through a home in san francisco. we have an update for you on that raging fire that sent this

welcome back everyone. we have an update from that breaking news in atlanta where the fire0vñ department is now confirming an explosion at a maintenance shed at atlanta's hartsfield airport. the explosion happening near gate d-21. we can tell you entire concourse d has been evacuated. we can confirm the power is out on that concourse. right now we're being told there are no reports of injuries, no reports of smoke or fire. much closer to home, an update to breaking news where a firefighter is hurt and a family out of their home this morning after a fire damages a few homes and cars in san francisco's bayview district. that fire started about 2:30 this morning, quickly spread to the second home on hudson avenue near third street. "today in the bay's" christie smith has been at the scene all morning long. she joins us live with the latest information from firefighters. christie? >> good morning to you. arson investigators are here taking a close look at this home

trying to figure out how such a big fire started in a home that was vacant. they do know that it started essentially right there where those two firefighters are standing. neighbors tell me it was vacant, but people seem to be storing things on the property like televisions. this fire spread across the lot to the home right next door where a family was sleeping inside. looking at the size of the towering flames, it's amazing looking at the size of the towering flames, it's amazing that they all made it out unharmed. it started overnight in the bayview district and spread along the fence line to the home of 85-year-old odessa allen. firefighters quickly called for a second alarm. allen tells me she was sleeping when her granddaughter yelled fire. >> just grabbed my pants and my robe and just tried to make the best of it, just what i could do. i was in a days. i just didn't know what to do. >> but you got out okay?

>> i sure did. >> reporter: she tells me her 5-year-old grandson was also inside. one firefighter had to be treated at the hospital because he actually was on this balcony that you see here that's burned with going down some steps and fell through. he hurt his knee but is expected to make a full recovery. ten people displaced. they're here this morning finally being let in to grab what things they could. they are getting help this morning from the red cross. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith torques day in the bay. 6:46 right now. let's get an update on tuesday morning outside. it looks like a feel-good tuesday ahead. >> the good news is, breaking news in the weather department, it's going to be nice. it is going such a nice day. we are being spoiled not only temperaturewise, but our air quality has improved dramatically from the showers that came through yesterday and we're still getting rather robust onshore flow this morning. that's where[ we had all those low clouds situated over the golden gate bridge.

the low clouds are not touching the highway. there's no thick fog out there to show you down on the roads. that could become a factor as we head throughout the next couple hours. we have one-hour flight delays out of sfo. keep that in mind. as we head throughout the day, we're expecting more flight delays along the east coast. right now half-hour delays trying to get to laguardia. we should say our flight delays in san francisco will be lifted by about 10:00 a.m. as the clouds will clear quickly. 56 in the city. 61 in sunnyvale. 56 in gilroy. they say the warmer it gets, the more yu can smellluñ the garlic we head through the end of the week, we have a warmup headed our way. i want to start with your wind speeds. just to show you for the most part, now coming out of the west. that's a good sign. that onshore flow will carry that cool ocean air all day long. a good looking day shaping up. high pressure will start to move closer and closer to the bay area. it's going to situate itself

toward the end of the week. for today, comfortable conditions. at the coast 50s and 60s. bay side 60s and 70s. inland 70s and 80s headed our way. 81 in livermore, 74 for fremont. redwood city, good morning, looking good today. the good news is when it comes to father's day, i want to let everybody know you can have a barbecue. going to b with significant fire danger. it's just not going to be great for the beach as temperatures will drop off. we'll see a fair amount of cloud cover and only 59 degrees on sunday at the beach. nonetheless, staying nice and comfortable all week long. no extreme heat headed our way. let's check the drive, 6:48. >> no fire danger from a barbecue. you've never seen me barbecue before. looking at the bay bridge, a smooth drive. traffic flowing smoothly toward the area. there's a new crash reported eastbound, counter commute and not a lot of problems. we'll track that.

slowing getting into the city itself. we'll check out the tri-valley. with your mild slowing through livermore and here through highway 84, speeds coming down to about 55 at their very worst. this traffic tuesday not shaping up to be much of an issue here. continuing to the south bay with a smooth flow of traffic. northbound 101, speeds in the 60s past 680. over here by the airport and the merge off 87 where we see the speeds coming down. slr speeds registering below 20. that's at the focus point. it should smooth out over the next couple minutes. 87 not a big deal but slowing as well. we'll lookm.p at the bay bridge toll plaza, nice until you get to the parking lot and the overcrossing for 880. then the metering lights are on. the fast track lanes are visibly moving. the metering lights not too slow. the clouds not presenting a problem. you can see the city and all the way across the bridge.

yesterday with the sprinkles in the area, we had a big slowing out of novato. this morning you're pretty good. mild slowing all the way down into san rafael. at 6:50 we have an update to breaking news we've been following. students at san jose state university on alert this morning after a man exposed himself to a female student on campus. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is live at san jose state. she joins us now with new details. >> reporter: good morning. i just hang up the phone with san jose state campus police. they say all the information they are giving out has been sent out to students here in this alert text message that was sent out as soon as this incident was reported last night. it says it happened just before 10:00, 9:50 at duncan hall. after flashing himself, the suspect just took off. all police are saying is this person is a hispanic man in his 20s wearing a white t-shirt and

jeans with a teal hat. teal makes many of us think of the san jose sharks. officials cannot confirm if he was, in fact, wearing a san jose sharks hat. officials say they believe this is an isolated incident. they want to remind everyone school is out. so most students are gone right now on summer break. there's about 30,000 students here on campus when school is in attendance. it's unknown if the female who reported the incident is a student. she very well could be an employee because according to san jose state's public information officer, some 2,000 employees are on campus at any given time during the summer break. information is limited this morning, but we are working the story and san jose state police say nonetheless they are on high alert, though i must say it's really a ghost town around here other than a few joggers who we've seen run by. no one is coming and going on campus this morning. live in san jose state, marla tellez, "today in the bay." we have new details this morning, dozens of alleged gang

members in santa clara county now facing a long list of en indictments handed down by the d.a., part of the biggest gang bust in county history. "today in the bay's" bob redell live in share with what else we're expecting later this afternoon. >> reporter: good morning, jon. later this morning at 10:30 santa clara county d.a. jeff rosen will hold an hour-long news conference here in san jose to outline the charges, his case against the nuestra familial gang. they've been charged with 77 crimes they allege took place between 2010 and may 30th this year. the charges include a murder, drug dealing, weapons and at least six bank robberies. in one robbery at the alliance federal credit union, used to be located at a strip mall at snell and blossom hill, the indictment charges one of the defendants, a

woman, allegedly robbed a bank by threatening to blow it up with a bomb that turned out to be fake. an attorney says she believes this gang bust, the largest ever in santa clara quounity is politically charged. live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:53 the emergency is over for now. east palo alto police have ended the procedures in response to an outbreak of violence. the police department made the announcement yesterday after going three weeks without a shooting. last month the city saw a surge of violence including the death of a 15-year-old boy in what police say was a gang-related shooting. the police chief says even though the crime emergency has ended, his department will continue efforts to stop violence in the city. brace yourselves, the town of los gatos will start using

new license plate reading technology to hand out parking tickets. police say the new system called auto view will scan and store license plate numbers making parking enforcement more accurate. it's not exactly clear when the new system will be installed. when it is, police will have a two-week grace period where parking violeters will only get a warning instead of a ticket. apple's worldwide development conference in san francisco grabbing the attention of local law enforcement. the latest operating system has a safety feature to deter smart phone theft. anyone who doesn't have your apple id or password is locked out, making the phone inoperable and tough to resell. the san francisco police chief says he hopes the system becomes a widespread trend. speaking of apple, new video this morning. it is apple's new secret store at the stanford shopping center. if we have video, not a real secret.

southbound. also looking at the peninsula, no problem driving over. for the bridges, san mateo and dumbarton looking good. slowing castro valley y and southbound 880. a final check of the day's stop stories for you, theé federal government has dropped its appeal to stop the morning after contraception pill from being soldw to young girls. the justice department announced this week it plans to comply with the judge's ruling that allows the drug to be distributed to girls of any age without a prescription. a house fire has injured a firefighter in san francisco's bayview district. that fire broke out early this morning in a vacant home and also damaged a neighboring home. the firefighter was apparently injured when a set of stairs collapsed beneath him. the santa clara county district attorney will announce the biggest gang bust in county history this morning. a grand jury is indicting 48 alleged gang members accused of selling drugs, robbing banks and
