"early today" starts right now. >> announcer: this is "early today" for wednesday, june 12th. good morning. i'm richard lui. four aggressive wildfires are sweeping through colorado this morning, prompting evacuations there. the two largest are near

zero percent contained. a record-breaking heat wave is only fueling the black forest fire near colorado springs. mandatory evacuations are under way for more than 6,000 people there. officials saying that blaze broke out tuesday afternoon moving quickly over 8,000 acres and destroying up to 60 homes with thick smoke visible for miles. officials fear that number will only grow. in addition to the black forest fire, smaller blazes are burning near cannon city and rocky mountain national park and lovito in southern colorado. now to turkey, anti-government protests are stretching into their second week. both protesters and police are vowing to stand their ground. turkey is an important u.s. ally in an important geographic location. richard engel reports from istanbul for us. >> reporter: police moved in around 7:00 a.m. and sparked the worst clashes in turkey in a decade. police used tear gas and water cannons. the protesters, stones and

molotov cocktails. the demonstrators complained of police brutality and that prime minister erdogan is embodying an islamic agenda. supreme court supreme court [ speaking a foreign language ] >> they're trying to limit our rights of liberty and our showing our ideas. >> reporter: by evening taksim filled again with more than 10,000 demonstrators shouting against prime minister erdogan. it seemed like the violence was over. but it turned again, suddenly in the biggest crackdown of the day. hundreds of riot police and their vehicles charged in. there was a stampede as protesters rushed to escape. some fell, some injured. fires, more tear gas. this is now a challenge over the nature of this country. erdogan's islam ic democracy and

there are protests tonight and clashes in the city of ankara. that said, there are many people watching what's going on here in anka and who believe demonstrators are getting what they deserve says erdogan. richard engel, nbc news, istanbul. the self-described nsa whistle-blower edward snowden remains in hiding and briefly came forward. tuesday congress was briefed on the once classified surveillance program and how it became public. andrea mitchell has the latest. >> reporter: called on the carpet, the head of the national security agency summoned the intelligence committee to explain, how bad is the damage and how did a 29-year-old contractor copy so many secret documents.

and "the guardian's" glenn greenwald says more leaks are on the way. >> we're going to have a lot more significant revelations that have not yet been heard over the next several weeks and months. >> reporter: snowden is on the lam, his picture plastered on every hong kong newspaper reports nbc ian williams. >> staff here at the hotel confirms that one edward snowden did check out monday at lunchtime. he's not been seen since, but is believed to still be in hong kong. >> reporter: they confirm that lindsay mills is the girlfriend snowden left behind in hawaii. in her blog still taken down, mills refers to him as "e" and told friends she was in a state of shock over his sudden departure. snowden first reached out to award-winning filmmaker laura poitras after seeing her film "the program." the film profiled a disillusioned analyst william benny. >> the dangers is we fall into a

senators moved to what is expected to be a lengthy debate on a bipartisan proposal. it provides the department of homeland security with an additional $3 billion to improve border security. now, after the vote, president obama reiterated his full-throated support of the bill. the bill's fate is less clear in the house, but speaker john boehner did sayed he does expect to see immigration legislation signed by the end of the year. al qaeda at work, a disturbing discovery in the west african republic of mahli. the associated press saying it has recovered a 26-page manual with detailed instructions and diagrams on how to use a sa-7 missile capable of taking down a commercial airplane. you're looking at film of similar missiles. the discovery was made in a building in timbuktu. they say the manual

is believed to have an excerpt from a terrorist encyclopedia edited by osama bin laden him sflt. nbc bill karins is here with the forecast. >> it was -- the recipe was there for disaster in colorado. it was extremely hot. it was a little windy and it had almost no humidity in the air whatsoever and hit 100 degrees in denver and for them that's news. that was the earliest they ever hit 100 degrees in a calendar year and set the stage for fires we showed you pictures of earlier. hot through areas of albuquerque where the drought is horrible and worried about a big, bad fire season and it was still very warm still in the desert southwest from vegas to phoenix. now, the northwest it was the completely opposite story. you know, colorado still dealing with temperatures today that are easily 90 to 100 degrees so the fires again today while the northwest continues to deal with this upper level low spinning by keeping an onshore flow over oregon.

in the news this morning, pope francis is admitting the presence of a so-called gay lobby inside the vatican. he made the admission last week during a private audience where he described the faction as a stream of corruption inside the holy see. the senate has advanced a bill revamping the definition of sex trafficking. under the legislation, child prostitutes would be considered victims rather than juvenile offenders. and a bill stigmatizing the gay community in russia has unanimouslily passed the lower house of parliament. the bill bans giving any children information about homosexuality and fines people who display gay pride. the measure was met with protests. a new study finds 95% of people do not wash their hands long enough to wash their hands. the study from the university of michigan found 15% of men do not wash their hands at all. as for women, 7% forgo the wash. the good news, those signs in
