2013. >> from nbc news, this is "today," with matt lauer, and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, and welcome to tod"today" on a wednesday morni. >> i am savannah guthrie alongside natalie morales. >> the largest fire is burning about an hour south of the city of denver. several neighborhoods under evacuation orders. let's get to miguel almaguer. >> reporter: some 8,000 acres are charred and dozens of homes lost and this morning this fire is zero percent contained. fueled by record-setting heat and low humidity the black forest fire raced through the

colorado springs neighborhood, flames consuming home after home after home, up to 60 feared destroyed, and the smoke plume towering feet into the air. >> as you can tell, weather is not working with us now. >> reporter: today more than 2,500 homes in danger and more than 5,000 people chased out by the flames. >> the smoke i could see it from the north side of denver. sorry, i'm shaking. >> larry evacuated with his family but returned to help his neighbor get a horse to safety. >> the horse was totally freaked out and tied him to the back of my truck and dragged him out. >> reporter: near canyon city, the royal gorge fire charred more than 3,000 acres, and the iconic royal bridge, one of the highest in the world. >> i question how both sides to

be burning and the bridge to survive. >> reporter: back at the black forest fire, many on scene and dozens of homes gone. 900 prisoners from the area were forced out of the area because of the blaze, while conditions are cool we are expecting high temperatures later today. matt? >> miguel almaguer in colorado this morning. thank you very much. and let's get to al with the fire danger and more severe weather on the way. >> the bad news is we are not going to get much help from the weather. this morning, sunny with light winds and this afternoon temperatures rise in the 90s. we are looking for it to become windy, and southerly winds 15 to 20 miles per hour, and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. this is bad, bad news. talking about bad news, let's

look at what is going as far as severe weather. we have severe storms firing up from minnesota into iowa, and they are moving into the east. we have a huge risk area right now to show you. a slight risk of strong storms from st. louis to washington, d.c., but we have a strong risk from davenport, iowa, into chicago, and columbus and peo a peoria, and we are talking about 18 million people affected by this, and the threat is not just for today and it moves east on into tomorrow. look at the next 24 hours. rainfall from 2 to 4 inches from chicago to pennsylvania, and tomorrow a risk of strong storms from jackson all the way up to bridgeport, connecticut, and look at where the strong risk is for tomorrow, washington, richmond and up to philadelphia and south of new york, and we are talking about hail, winds and rain and tornados.

and that means we will probably look at flood watches and warnings over the next 24 hours. >> we will check back with you in a moment. thank you. we are following breaking news in turkey overnight where anti-government protesters are engaging in a new round of violent clashes. richard engel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. there is actually an uneasy calm right now, no gas in the air which is a good sign, and traffic even returned to the square. if you look down you see there is a heavy security presence, but unlike yesterday right now the riot police are standing guard and the question is will it last because there are protesters still here as well. a few thousands protesters stayed the night in the square through all the tear-gas and water cannons. >> it felt so terrible, like war, you know.

>> reporter: making it worse, it rained over night. still the protesters want to stay calling supporters to join them and repairing their tent and showing a resilience that has both surprised and infearrated the prime minister. with no khrfp clashes, radicals attacked several banks, and the commercial center looked wounded. the prime minister says the vandalism is proof he is battling troublemakers and not protesters with a cause, and he has showed no tolerance for them, ordering a crackdown on tuesday that looked to many observers to be heavy handed. for 24 hours riot police fired volley after volley of tear-gas. at one stage when the square was packed police charged into the

crowds causing a stampede, and some fell and many were injured. today the prime minister is meeting with protest leaders and earlier the turkish president appealed for calm. if the calm last the worst of this may be over. >> richard ev, thank you very m. here at home, questions being asked on capitol hill today as they search for a case against the man that leaked the information. >> there is growing pressure on the intelligence community, even from its supporters in congress. intelligence chair, diane feinstein, is at the head to declassify more information about the archiving of telephone records, and even as the aclu is suing the government claiming this is all an invasion of privacy. the head of the national

security agency returns to capitol hill today expected to face more tough questions from senators over the nsa leaks, as alleged leaker, edward snowden remains on the run. >> we are watching the programs carefully. >> the senate intelligence committee is pushing to declassify the program and demanding answers from the chief for denying records were collected. >> it's not possible for congress to do the kind of vigorous oversight that the president spoke about if you can't get straight answers. >> three tech companies, google, microsoft and facebook announced tuesday they are asking the government for permission to give them the numbers they want to comply. and as for snowden, the fbi is

politicians. rubio says it hinges on finding appropriate border security measures. a mother and her baby are lucky to be alive this morning after an out-of-control cab jumped the curb and nearly mowed them both down in the bronx on tuesday. the mother pulled her child from under the cab. the 68-year-old driver passed out behind the wheel and later was pronounced dead. both mother and daughter were treated for scrapes and bruises at the hospital, but as you can see, the little one is in amazingly good condition. >> thank goodness she is okay. >> yeah, but a sad story about the driver. we had rain, and tomorrow another 3 to 5 inches? >> yeah, the u.s. open outside of philadelphia -- >> oh, that's right. >> big trouble. let's show you what else we have

the death penalty? just moments ago, castro faced the judge, appearing in an orange jump suit pleading not guilty to all charges, and they are hinting they may be open to a plea deal. >> we are sensitive to the emotional impact and strain the trial would have on the women, their families and the community. mr. castro currently faces hundreds of years in prison with the current charges and it's our hope we can continue to work towards a resolution to avoid having an unnecessary trial. >> reporter: fbi investigators back at castro's house gathering evidence, and inside they say castro tortured these women for a decade, and they called him a sexual violent predator and

charging him with 177 counts of kidnapping and 139 counts of rape and one act of aggravated murder for impregnanting michelle knight and causing her to miscarry. >> how do you prove there was a pregnancy to begin with, and how do you prove castro caused the death of the fetus? >> do you think the prosecutor will go for the death penalty? >> i think he is going to go for it in this one. >> reporter: what about the victims? since their dramatic homecomings all three women are said to be happy and healing. gina de-jesus wants to get her driver's license and go back to school. >> they are looking at

apartments and they are moving on with their life, which is what everybody wants for them. >> reporter: just a few moments ago the statement was given that we are hopeful for a just division. >> as we just heard, castro pleaded not guilty at least for moment, and what is your cut as an experienced lawyer. do you think this will result in a plea deal? >> how can he plea not guilty? are you kidding me? there's zero chance he will be acquitted. this is to preserve his rights to get a plea deal. >> the charges we have been promised by the prosecutor will cover the entirety of the captivity and the charges in the indictment so far take us to the year 2007, and is that a matter of symbolism or is there perhaps strategy behind him?

>> the charges only go up to 2007 and so much has happened since then. what the prosecutor is trying to do is gather all the evidence with these women and i would expect more charges to come covering the entire time period. >> the murder charge is what makes it a death penalty eligible case, and we don't know what the prosecutor decided about that yet. and we just heard from the lawyer that physical evidence does that appear to be present here, but is there enough to secure a conviction? >> their testimony in a court of law is evidence and three of them together are going to corroborate each other's stories and present powerful evidence. it would be unusual for the death penalty to be given when the mother survived. >> these three women decided not

7:26. good morning. i'm jon kelley. berkeley police on the lookout for a man who sexually assaulted a child in the bathroom of the berkeley marina. the suspect described as a black male, blond hair with green streaks. a fremont man expected to be in court facing charges of kidnapping. 23-year-old aaron roy climb had to the backseat of a teenage girl's car in a grocery store parking lot and ordered her to drive to a remote area. that teenager was able to escape and she ran to a neighbor's house. police were able to match evidence left in the teenager's car to roy, that suspect. investigators right now trying to figure out exactly how an elevator mechanic died at

the beach this summer. swimmers faye potentially deadly rip currents. she is in gulf shores, alabama with this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. since sunday five people died along the alabama and from fla coast as a result of the dangerous rip currents. here in gulf shore the beaches are open again but they're flying the cautionary yellow flag. in panama city, florida they shut down the beaches and told everybody to stay out of the water after the latest victim was found there yesterday afternoon. along parts of the gulf coast flags are up warning swimmers to be wear of dangerous rip currents. >> it's been rough the fast few days. >> it has. >> reporter: this week alone, five people drowned. the results of rip currents. more here along alabama's shoreline. among them, 25-year-old matthew on vacation with his fiancee and warren moore who was in the surf with his 13-year-old

very pragmatic. keep touch with the schedule. a lot of dads don't know what the calendar is for their kids and in the 11th hour they're like i didn't know there was a recital tonight and now i can't make it. there's guilt with that. keep track with mom that you're doing your job as a dad. i changed a diaper and did a little laundry that seems about half and sometimes we miss that boat but most importantly i think you have to protect time to be with your kids. you're not going to get all the moments you want so take the moments you get. be fully present, leave work and that is the most important thing you can do to alleviate that guilt. >> but are offices, the work environment are they catching up with this idea? are they open to dads trying to be more flexible and getting out of the office earlier to make that event. >> technology is helping with this and offices are realizing that you can work from home effectively but it's not moving

it is time for today's kitchen simple dinners, when we show you how you can make meals more quickly than heating up a frozen pizza. >> aviva goldfarb is the author of "the six o'clock scramble." her recipe had to use ingredients already in the kitchen, unless you're hoda. >> so funny. >> hi, aviva. >> hello. right here we're going to make a garlic crusted shrimp with cherry tomatoes and toasted panko. >> wait, wait, wait, who has panko? >> it's actually pretty common, but if you don't have panko, it's fine to use bread crumbs, it will work well, as well. >> how do we do it? >> we have olive oil heating up right here, we're going to add a tablespoon of butter.
