welcome back to the subway intermission report. getting set for overtime hockey in game one of the stanley cup final. how about the chicago team. they follow that up by taking on a team that has the second most hits in the boston bruins. is chicago giving and taking? >> they are. they faired very well in that department. the hawks in the first ten minutes were out hitting the boston bruins. that trend has been even. seabrook comes up with big contact. shaw on mcquaid in the fore-check. bolland is there to city set up a big hit by bickell.

chara continues to throw his weight around for the bruins. got a huge contact with marchand. great hit by seabrook on the end of paille. lots of contact by both teams. >> two tremendous goalies in this match. how much have they benefitted from blocked shots. >> 26-13. that's because it takes a lot of courage. it takes a lot of style. watch these guys get down and get it done. there's seabrook with a block. they'll do it whenever they have to. ference, completely fearlessly. bergeron got stung there. mid section of the seidenberg. seidenberg, again, they know what they have to do to win a stanley cup and they're willing to do it. >> let's talk about keys to overtime and talk about the chicago blackhawks. >> they want to continue to play the way they did at the end of the third period. you saw him get the goal off the skate. they have done a very good job throughout the third period. >> boston needs to press the

what should we be alert to as we head into the fourth period? >> eddie: the long change. your defensive zone is the farthest way away from your bench so for the boston bruins your left defenseman and winger have to be absolutely sure when they make the change. for the chicago blackhawks, it's their right winger and defenseman. change before you're tired. make sure the puck is going away from your defensive zone before you come off the ice because that long pass could end up being the difference between a two on two and a two-on-one coming against your goaltender. >> mike: fifth overtime game for the blackhawks. they've won three. sixth overtime game for the bruins, they've won four. same units to begin as have begun the prior three.

leddy. seidenberg goes to get it. instead, it's thrown by kruger. angled across and mcquaid can bank one further. right to the blackhawks. sharp. to kane. tried a second time and it didn't work either one. dropped back again for the carry on by peverley. right around the front. it couldn't be picked up ass as sequin was heading to the net. kruger. seidenberg. jabbed along in traffic. sequin glides it out to center. big pop fly is bunted right back along and played further. up the wing. frolik. he sent it through the blue paint wide. leddy a shot that's knifed down. out of the scrum rifled on to thornton by kelly. thornton throws one wide and bounces around and can be played by kelly.

stymied by seabrook. it comes to center for boychuk to blast it right back in again. more bruins still over the boards. chara comes off. ference is on. boychuk turning. back hand play that comes off of thornton at center, turned right back on by saad and gathered by boychuk and banked around behind. one defenseman could come off, the other could not and it is cleared back down for an icing and another stoppage of play with 3:26 played in period four. >> eddie: tyler sequin, a little give and go. a quick give and go. >> pierre: and then brad marchand. seabrook is steering that puck wide. >> eddie: might be the first shift for torey krug. >> mike: from that he comes quickly to the bench. another change is made. chara comes out.

seidenberg. they will be sent back to the ben bench. >> eddie: claude julien not happy with that icing call. he can't change bodies. he's really upset. >> mike: chased out is toews. coming in is saad to draw with kelly. and off the tieup it is spun back along by toews but started back by paille. a man up the ring. thornton. he got it to him. on the outside. another back hand try. it's blocked. and again they are standing. toews sent it up. rushing ahead is saad. saad with a shot. it got the glass. bounced off the outside of the cage. worked loose by hossa. knocked by him from krejci. krejci goes to defensive work on toews and then a collision

there. seidenberg and toews and seidenberg went down. hossa. he fed one that was hit just behind. off the shelf to chara. spun it along for seidenberg. has thornton nearby. can he drop it on? no. kept by the blackhawks again. they've been strong on keeping pucks. hossa fed one along to bickell. turns there as they've gotten the change made partially. oh, and a drive that went wide as it came right back over for a wonderful opportunity from bolland. >> eddie: tired legs on the ice for chicago. tired legs on the ice for boston. >> mike: that one is tapped to the corner. chara plays off of marchand and then hjalmarsson. back to hjalmarsson again. 5:00 played in the overtime. ga kane wrapped up by marchand. up to bolland.

you've got to say they've been critical cogs of this thig blackhawks team. michael frolik out of the czech republic. most of the guys have done great for chicago all year, haven't they, eddie, especially in shorthanded situations? >> mike: frolik must draw against krejci. it is won by krejci. set up for boychuk. the shot was moblocked. that was the way you had it set up. this time the face-off was won by krejci. >> eddie: it went to krejci, boychuk and it never got to corey crawford. bullock out there to get that sh shot block. the bruins executed with nothing

to show for it. >> mike: johnny oduya flips it on. he sent us to overtime. toews. a shot was blocked down. it is lucic to get it there. krejci looking ahead. tried to play on the wing for horton and no luck. had it checked away by krejci. lucic tips it across. red by toews and he marches back in. shot one and it's deflekted up and out of play. >> eddie: a couple of good plays. niklas hjalmarsson. they were on the way. >> mike: that man is not happy. he doesn't like the turnovers and he's not happy about those turnovers at all. >> mike: claude julien will watch an offensive face-off in the zone for the blackhawks. seabrook and toews the defense. handzus to take this.

sharp in the shooting hole and kane. from this tie up it is dug out and started ahead by marchand. and fired back out again by kelly who comes quickly to the bench replaced by jagr. handzus. it's careened right back to him. stymied by him. seabrook and kane tries to work through this. cannot. bruins' wall was there. jagr tipped it nurt. seabrook was nearby. 7:00 gone and a long pass is on goal and rask will cover it. >> pierre: quicker changes, too, and i don't know what it looks like upstairs but the fatigue factor starting to kick in here. >> eddie: we're looking for patrick sharp. tuukka rask does the right thing. gets a face-off.

when you're fatigued, tired, mistakes happen. you've got to make sure those shift lengths are shorter as we were talking about. >> mike: there will be two days between games one and two. a good thing because they are playing part of a second game here. chara tipped it on back. krejci stymied there. he got it on for sequin. beg your pardon, that was peverley. kelly tries to dart back in. able to lay it around the board where hanz. alongside is brought in by sequin. drops it off to peverley. rebound. oh, and another save made by crawford and then the puck careened to the corner. >> eddie: bollig just saved a goal for chicago. >> mike: good play behind.

worked back up the boards. it can be sent back across and controlled by the bruins and a shot is held from the stick of daugavins by crawford. >> eddie: turnover in the middle of the ice, the neutral zone. here comes tyler sequin. watch this right there. by tyler say kequin on the back happened. sensational save by crawford. before he can get to that open net, he comes in. david bolland bales out everybody right there so daugavins can't cash. >> mike: eight scoring chances in the overtime, seven by boston. for chicago it's hjalmarsson. saad directed on? toews pushed it on goal. away from hossa played by chara. dropped back on. it's carried back ahead once

more by krejci. he must wait, played back around. it is outletted. drop back over for oduya. rushed by seidenberg. bounced on to horton. horton sailed around. more changes in lines. grabbed and held by rask. what is the length of a shift in overtime compared in regulation play would you guess? >> eddie: i think it certainly is much shorter, doc, in the first overtime because of how far your defensive zone is from your bench. normally 30, 35 seconds, 40 seconds when you talk about regulation into overtime, but that long change of the first overtime you're probably looking to go up and down and off. you don't want an extended

shift. you're look at the quarter range, 25 to 30 max. >> mike: it all has to be orchestrated on the fly. this one is settled down and played on by handzus. ference there had it chopped away by sharp. kane dropped one that hit off the referee. crosses in the slot. sets it up now for bergeron. bergeron having trouble finding the handle. he had it taken away by marchand. marchand consistently trying to battle. a kickback over near patrick kane. 9:30 is played in the first overtime period. shots are 42-32 in the game, chicago in a 3-3 tie. knifed away from him by kane. peverley. puck is loose there.

it can be rifled back. bounced around by kruger. hit by ference. the two of them test and it is them kicking it along. long pass is simply one for paille. he doubles back and is able to carry it in. michael frol leak wiik with a s went wide. 10:04. push one to the boards and frolik has it. in a stanley cup game, it is the most periods played in, we are in number four. normally in the final they don't go that long. the longest was three. thrown ahead. it's settled down by bolland. back across. it's bickell throwing it behind the net. hustling it keep it in.

hjalmarsson. it's read by lucic. lucic dropped a winger to the net. can't push it home. sliding play and a hand pass along by oduya. chara's shot blocked and it's just whisked away on the rebound by horton. moved in and tries to get retangled. seidenberg to lucic for the pass. the blackhawks are getting it back where it can be played by chara again. teams in the midst of a change. jagr spun around there. tries to mash it back in. it goes in deep where hjalmarsson tests with his man there, krejci. the hawks are heading for sod. the 21-year-old winger guides it across where toews can gain control. >> eddie: a lot of work for lucic. >> mike: trouble there. with the shot. hawks wide.

turned along by toews. met there effectively by ference but played to the outside by hossa. led to the back of keith. dropping across. the shot was blocked away. jagr was the guy who got by that. they walk back across. boychuk sends hossa flying. jagr protects. gets help from boychuk. >> pierre: too many men on the ice for chicago. >> mike: a power play for the bruins with 7:52 left in the first overtime. >> pierre: they're on a line change. you see all the red sweaters on the ice. that's too many and they play the puck and that's why it's too many men on the ice. >> mike: both teams get a rest because of the mandatory

scraping of the ice takes place now. the wait is almost over. tomorrow the best golfers of the world will be at merien golf club. the u.s. open begins tomorrow at 3:00 on nbc. >> pierre: 7-3 shots on goal in favor of the boston bruins. here's brad marchand. great play there. danny paille to shawn thornton. big-time save. a huge second chance opportunity and milan lucic busting in, tries to throw his puck across to nathan horton but he was denied with the desperation of hjalmarsson and oduya. a power play opportunity for the boston bruins here in overtime. too many men on the ice as

pierre pointed out. >> eddie: the ice is tended to. the bruins have had one power play, scored on it on the very first shot from patrice bergeron. it gave them a 3-1 lead early in the third. back came the blackhawks to tie it up. an extra breather for both teams. the ice has been scraped and it's back to normal and the power play will begin. >> eddie: when they score their power play, they had four forwards on the ice. jaromir jagr. hard move. >> eddie: across the key kept by seidenberg. punched all the way back. tries to regain. the battle on and it came back to seidenberg. over to krug. fires. save made by crawford.

rebound. back. it's krug again. krejci's heading back to seidenberg. over to krug. krejci with it there. tried to throw one in front. that was blocked by crew ger. krejci said it the best, it's moments away from frolik. looking towards him. rebound. rebound on and it's knifed out of the air. held there for krejci. krejci looks over the traffic. >> eddie: nice save for krejci. mike mining fires and it's got the glass. punched on back. driving ahead with t. frolik caught up to by krejci. brought right back in and it's krug. krug has a shot. that one blocked down.

it's cleared back down. 45 to go on the power play. helter-skelter near the chicago cage. jagr was able to spot it. now charging back up is lucic. led one along. comes to lucic again. seabrook said no. kept by bergeron. shoots one. steered away by crawford. jagr floated it on. it was away from lucic. bashed back around from the reach of sequisequin. sequin couldn't stop it. two aside battle. 10:00 -- ten to go power play. three shots on goal by the broounls. penalty time is up and sharp's out of the box. kelly off of kane. swings it along to sharp. challenged by kelly right back

to jagr. hjalmarsson rushing ahead is sharp. sharp with the back hander. turned aside by tuukka rask in goal. played back along the center and not too far by bickell. tipped off by boychuk. pass was just away but kept on by peverley. gathered by paille and that was blocked aside by crawford. 5:10 to go. enough excitement here for you? 3-3 in o.t. 78 shots have been tried. three a side have gone in. toews trying to get to the front. ference says no. bickell had that taken along by peverley. played on by seabrook. fans chanting. comes on back now. lobbed ahead hoping for lucic. played back ahead by see brook.

they didn't reach seidenberg. hit hard for his trouble by shaw. a two-on-one is developing here. krejci carries it in. saved by crawford. rebound. tried to play in front. unable to get along. another try by chara. that's blocked down by hossa. shaken up a bit but he's still back in the play. what sacrifice here in o.t. drags it ahead. has shaw with him. tried to work one in front. then seidenberg goes down. shaw with one there. steered away by rask onto the back it comes for oduya. shot. save. the save is made by rask. what wonderful action at both ends. >> pierre: what a play by tyler sequin in his own zone. right there. he gets the puck. two-on-one. david krejci realizes sequin is coming in. watch the stop.

and then the back-check. that gave david krejci a wide open net. corey crawford made it there and not the post on the power play. right there. >> mike: in the o.t., 7 shots to 5, boston. more importantly, we play on. the next goal wins the game. a few false starts there. rushed away by ference. reversed on by kane to be taken by sharp. sharp fed it right back through kane all the way around to oduya. off the glass board but taken and worked on.

hjalmarsson with it there. back along to kane. galloping around. getting space. shooting wide. rask pounds that one. >> pierre: he had to see through a big body. eddie, you know. patrick kane moving one way, shooting across his body. what a save by rask. >> eddie: kane circling up. you've got hjalmarsson there. nathan horton, jeremy mentioned he got hurt. i'll just do my own. nathan horton is speculated by a lot of hockey people that he is playing with a lot of injuries. it doesn't look like much, but clearly that upper body injury he's been playing with got aggravated.

the bruins are short a man on the bench. >> pierre: good eye, eddie. he's gone to the locker room. >> mike: 3:20 in the first overtime. shaw jabs it further. bickell moves in with ference. ference with good body position. bickell slowed it down. popped up in the air. they tried to reach for it and how ougt of all of this confusion -- >> eddie: had this and they were on the cage of tuukka rask making sure he can get a visual on it. once he got onto the side of the net he blew the whistle. face-off to the left of the bruin goaltender.

claude julien has two center ice men. it will be interesting to see if the bruins gain possession, who replaces kelly on this line. >> mike: taken to the outside by toews. seidenberg there. two hawks on him. it came over to chara. chara led one ahead. up the wing for lucic. have to regather and brush it along. >> pierre: sequin is up and kelly wants to come. he can't. sequin has his legs over the board. >> mike: oduya went without a stick and still is. well guarded there by chal manson. he can pick up his stray stick in front of the bruins' bench. fortunately for him oduya can get it back up to frolik and

he'll have one across the top and have a shot to rattle around. snore sh another shot and that found its way off of rask. now chara, two minutes separating these teams and a second overtime. moving up is frolik taken by rask. play back by peverley. chased down by kruger. they circled to zebra and back over to waitsfiel peeling off is patrick. jagr chipped one on.

racing back up ice is cry chi. peverley back up the wings, fell down. staggering along his road and just pushed back down the ice. 55 seconds to go. ference led it on back. boychuk with a mags right on the money. that one was a headhunter as it turned out on the block. bickell got it across and it can be retrieved by rozsival. back on come the blackhawks and bolland gets it back in. oduya tries not to come back. here is shawn thornton with a shot. saved. hit by draw for the. oh, for the board by paille jammed out where the center will ride with 18 to go. back by paille. there and so it's right back on.

galloping ahead is toews. toews up the wing and around in front. rolling off of him was seidenberg. three seconds, two, and it will take two. 3-3 at the end of four. >> eddie: a couple of real good chances late in overtime. how about shawn thornton, two a. plus chances if i had that overtime. >> mike: coming up, liam, mike and keith. goalies, the story in game one. the first game one in the final to go to multiple overtimes since game one in 1990. the bruins were in that one, too. the longest play in overtime by edmonton in boston, 3-2. this one, 3-3.

the blackhawks finish the western cup final by eliminating the kings. they'll begin the stanley cup final by heading into double

overti overtime. considering what you saw, how surprised are you that we are heading into double overtime? >> really surprised. both teams exchanging opportunities. i'll stay here all night to watch overtime hockey like that. bang, bang at both ends of the ice. crawford comes up with a nice save. chances sliding through the slot. just missed by tyler sequin. pinching "d." ending up with opportunities at the other end. paille with a nice play to thornton. crawford comes up with a couple of big saves on the fourth line as the bruins try to get it done. sequin jumping in with a rebound chance. they just kept on coming. >> we weren't cutting videotape. every ten seconds, take this one, take this one. there were some great near miss sz for both clubs either way. if this keeps going, i don't see it lasting much longer. >> not the finest game of the postseason for both goaltenders. what did you see from them? >> i thought they were both

cool, calm and collected. i'm not going to fault either one of them except crawford on the second goal. >> and some traffic in front of them, too. they've done a good job looking through the traffic. not a lot of rebound opportunity. when there has been, they've recovered. they had help from defenders. we knew this would be two terrific teams going forward with solid defenses. it's surprising how close it's been for both clubs. >> for the third time we are headed to double overtime hockey. boston and chicago tied at 3-3 in game one of the stanley cup finals.

welcome back to chicago. we're getting set for double overtime hockey in game one between chicago and boston. in the pregame we talked so much about both these teams defenses. for chicago who's stood out. >> hjalmarsson, oduya. oduya picked up the goal. they got this game tied. a one on one he's been outstanding. defending done a good job. rozsival helping out there as he gets a nice blocked shot. lucic gets in. look at the diving play by oduya to get back. oduya and hjalmarsson. he moves the puck out.

outstanding play with the stick by hjalmarsson. they've done a good job at fighting big-time minutes. >> staple of the claude julien hockey team, layers of defense. how much are you seeing that tonight? >> we're seeing it all over the place. these are two of the best -- no, the two best defensive teams in the league. dennis seidenberg has been a mountain back there. he's done everything he could possibly do. played as many minutes as chara. blocked shots. totally fearless when it comes to blocking shots. doesn't look like he can skate very well. always right in the way. it's amazing. boychuk's been very visible with his physical play and his decision making. as usual, they're led by the big guys, zdeno chara who logged minutes. watch the big guy with a quick easy out. that's what makes him so special. up the middle. incredible stuff from boston. been some chances but definitely

been some great defensive plays. >> original six. we're headed to the second overtime. what should we keep an eye on? >> nathan horton if he returns or not. pretty scary moment for bruins fans. the rush. there's nothing they should be afraid of especially with the way corey crawford seems totally at ease in the overtime. >> you know what's interesting for me, jaromir jagr got better as the overtime moved along. when everybody else starts to slow down a little bit. jagr looks as fast as he did 20 years ago. he did create scoring chances. to me moving forward i'll be watching him in the double overtime. >> if fatigue is not a factor for him, is it more of a factor for one of these two teams? >> i don't think so. they've bounced back and finished off their previous opponents in pretty good order. at the end of regulation chicago took advantage of that and went after them. they came out with plenty of legs in the overtime. they've had plenty of time to go here. >> if horton is out, that's one less guy for the boston bruins. it could be a fatigue issue. they're having to shorten that
