good morning everybody. thanks for joining us, i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. happening now, a massive fire snarling traffic in the east bay as flames engulf a big rig hauling a load of cars. take a look at what is happening on highway 24 near interstate 680 in lafayette. mike inouye has a closer look. what a mess out there? >> we're looking over here. this is the remnants of the fire. this is a great shot. this big rig and the car hauler, when we pass by that, my kids go, look at that, there are cars above the car as we're passing by. you look up and see that. that's why they have that ladder. fire constructs are on the second deck, still smoldering. we had nine cars on the back. we're told six of those cars were on fire at one point and also the cab of that rig. we hear about no injuries to any firefighters, that's good, as well as, of course, the person driving that or whatever crew was inside the cab. you see it's only on the shoulder. there was also blackened bushes on the side. there was a grass fire that started as well.

the fire crews took care of that as well. we had fire trucks blocking off a big perimeter. only one lane was open for a good amount of this morning's commute. looks like they're out of the area, right now just two getting by. you see at the top of the screen, a lot of locals know you can jump on pleasant hill and take that past the scene. 680, there's the backup and it is slammed -- you funnel down to two lanes all the way back toward that 680/24 interchange. a very unpleasant morning commute out of concord and wuhl nut creek heading south towards 680. let me show you the map, because this picture is not bad enough, i have to show you the sensors are starting to adjust, south of 242 into walnut creek out of concord, that's where you see the slowing. the good news is west of there through orinda you're smooth through the caldecott tunnel and south of there on 680 you're also okay. north of walnut creek, you want to take 680 and that will get

you over towards the eastshore freeway. the tri-valley slowing starts here, west 580 and west 84 through livermore. a lighter volume of traffic. the summertime shift kicking in as a lot of vacations and graduations have happened over the last couple weeks, continue over the last week. here the south bay a light build as well. the earlier crash we talked about, the big backup towards mckee and alum rock. a live look will show you the bay bridge toll plaza. you can only see a few cars waiting there. we don't have any metering lights yet guys. that's great news. we'll follow the7ñ sig alert. no injuries reported. back to you. an update right now on breaking news we've been following all morning long. a manhunt underweight right now for whoever stand a man to death in east san jose. that marks the city's 24th homicide of the year. this happened just after 12:30 this morning on checkers drive. that is where "today in the

bay's" marla tellez is now. she joins us live with all the details. good morning. >> reporter: still waiting to hear from the san jose police spokesperson. at this point all they're telling us is a man in his 40s was found stabbed multiple times right in front of a home on checkers drive near alum rock avenue in east san jose. we have the crime scene tape up here, the crime scene unit. the stabbing was reported at 12:37 this morning. police got the victim to the hospital soon after, but he died a little while later, pronounced dead at 1:30 this morning at regional medical center. we've been out here talking to people who live in this area. two young men tell us they're pretty stunned the violence has found its way into their nash hood. >> crime rate in san jose, it's just crazy that it's happening here. i don't know. i don't know what to think. >> i'm kind of used to it, the area like this.

>> reporter: sad thing to get used to though. >> sad thing to get used to. it happens all the time. >> reporter: police are not releasing the victim's identity at this time or any information about possible suspects. officials also aren't telling us if san jose's 24th homicide of the year is in fact gang related. i'm till waiting to hear back from the san jose police spokesperson. i should mention you cannot freely pass through checkers drive from alum rock to mckee. live in east san jose, marla tellez torques day in the bay. at 6:05, more breaking news overnight. this time in san francisco where police are searching for three men who shot and killed two men in visitacion valley. the victims were found early this morning from brook dale and blythe dale avenues near john mcclaren park. all three suspects were last

seen driving away in a white truck. in san francisco a developing story to tell you about where police have been clearing out an encampment of protesters at the hayes valley farms. some of them were up in the tree tops. we have new video of police plucking one of the protesters out of a home made tree house just moments ago. the protesters claiming to be part of the occupy movement have apparently been camped out at the site for more than a week. the farm is located on laguna between fell and oak streets. we're hearing police may have called off this raid. we'll keep you posted. police served an eviction to the protesters earlier this week. we understand activists again have been camping out there because the land is marked for the construction of a new apartment complex. we'll keep you posted. construction workers are back on the job at levi stadium in sna clara, the first day back

since a worker died at that site earlier this week. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us with how crews and officials are looking forward with, no doubt, the family still in morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. workers are starting to stream back in. they've got in their normal hard hats and safety vests. i'll step aside so you can see what's going on. they tell us it's been a very sad two days, but now they're back and are going to start their day with a safety meeting at 7:00 this morning at the 49ers' stadium construction site. the first day back since tuesday. more than a thousand workers sent home after a veteran mechanic was killed on the job. they started streaming in around 5:30 this morning. 63-year-old don white, a veteran with decades of experience was standing on a ladder at the bottom of an elevator shaft when he was struck and killed by a

counterer weight. several investigations are going on at the same time. i just spoke with a construction worker who was here on tuesday and now he's returning to the job. >> i've been in the trade for like 25 years and that's the first time it's ever happened on a job i'm working on. it's kind of sad. >> reporter: what do you expect today to be like? >> i expect a lot of people thinking what happened and what's next. i don't know. >> reporter: cal osha is telling us it could take six months to complete their full investigation. the general contractor of the new stadium, turner deaf con is expected to make a statement at 8:15. we noticed quite a few of the workers have on shirts that say "safety first." live in santa clara, christie smith torques day in the bay. >> their own way to remember their co-worker. >> a tough scene getting back to work today. 6:08. christina loren, some good news weather wise for us? >> it's going to be very nice.

i want to start with the reason why. beautiful live picture here. this is as high as we can go in terms of our live cameras strategically placed across the san bruno at about 1,000 to 1300 feet this morning. you can see here it is clear as a well. this also goes for the san francisco bay. let's show you that now, just a beautiful start to the day here. the sun is up at 6:09. we have gorgeous conditions here. because of the lack of low cloud cover, we are right on time when it comes to flights out of sfo. as we head through the day, we are expecting numerous delays across the midwest and northeast. we're actually expecting a powerful windstorm to develop if you're trying to get to chicago. right now no delays there. a lot of people traveling. it's a holiday weekend, father's day, and a lot of graduations happening as well. count on delays right now getting into laguardia. we'll keep you updated all day long right here on nbc bay area. i'm with you until 11:30. 52 in livermore, 49 in oakland.

looking at our chopper live over highway 24. look at the shell of the number of cars on the back of that big rig car hauler. let me show you the video because this is really dramatic. look at all the smoke, the flames. they had to block four of the five lanes and the shoulder because of this multiple car fire. six of nine there. that caused all that slowing, all these fire crews on scene. just starting to recover for that westbound highway 24 commute. a huge backup. i'll show you as things progress and as the traffic flow changes on that portion of the east bay. >> that is amazing video. here is a look at other top stories we're following this morning. san jose police investigating the city's 24th homicide of the year. it happened on checkers drive on the east side of the city. police say a man in his 40s was found stabbed several times. he later died.

police in san francisco have removed occupy protesters from a plot of land in the hayes valley area. the protest verse been there for more than a week. upset over plans to build a new apartment complex on what used to be the hated valley farm. construction workers back at the santa clara stadium site for the first time since a worker died at that time new 49ers stadium site. don white was working in an elevator shaft when a counterweight fell on him. officials for the constructionac company overseeing the project are expected to speak to workers this morning about that incident. it is 6:14 right now. about two hours from now top law enforcement officials from right here in the bay area and from new york teaming up with the country's largest smart phone makers to try to help fight the rise in cell phone thefts. san francisco d.a. george gascon and new york attorney generic snyderman are meeting with representatives from apple,

gool, samsung for a quote, smart phone summit. they'll also announce the information of a nationwide -- the formation of the nationwide initiative to stop the surge in smart phone thefts. >> as we told you earlier this week right here on today in the bay, apple jumping ahead of the game. just three days ago the tech giant announced a kill switch technology called activation lock. the new safety feature will be available this fall. it locks out anyone who doesn't have your apple i.d. or password making the phone inoperable and tough to resell. scott mcgrew joining us now. scott, that technology to do this has been around for years. yet apple just never did it. >> no. the reasonable supposition as to why they didn't until now is apple wanted to avoid the enormous amount of back-end management involved. while most of the lockouts will be legitimate. there are going to be accidents and pranks, even arguments over who actually owns a phone.

what happens if a teenager shows up to a store after a parent locks out a phone? apple probably wanted to stay out of that. it will have to get involved. google the latest company to come under criticism for not paying enough in taxes. a british politician claims google pays so little income tax in the uk its effective tax rate is .1%. not 1%, .1%. we're 15 minutes from the opening bell. looks like another tough day. it's all the same concerns we've been talking about for several weeks now. the fed will soon end quantitative easing. that worry is really catching on. the nikkei plunged 6% overnight. that's down into bear territory for the japanese stock markets. netflix says it will soon offer individual profiles. so a family can use one account but sign on as different people. that way your kids don't see a list of what you've been

own mike inouye, we want to honor you here on today in the bay and all the dads across the bay area. we appreciate you. today's weather is going to be another spoiler. today we will all be treated to some of the best weather across the entire nation. we have some potent storms moving into the chicagoland area as we head throughout the day today, expecting what we call a der riccio, a very powerful windstorm. you need to keep that in mind if you're trying to head that way for the father's day weekend. here in the bay area, if you have a dad coming into town,ta perfection for us. 52 in livermore, 53 in san jose. a gorgeous day shaping up. especially over the course of the evening, expecting the winds to be strongest. between about 3:00 and 6:00, high pressure in control. we have an area of low pressure off to the north. it's pretty nice out there. temperatures won't be above average, 84 in concord, 85 in fairfield and 82 degrees today

in santa rosa. getting into that father's day weekend, looking really good. 79 degrees for you and the number one dad in your life. 73 bay side. 63 degrees at the coast today. mike, i want to say happy father's day to you. it's not such a happy drive this morning for some commuters. >> but we still have a few days to recover. we're starting to recover a bit now. this is -- these are the shells of the cars remaining after a number of them caught on fire. this big rig hauler over on the shoulder and this big rig here with the flatbed arrives on scene. now you see three lanes of westbound highway 24 are open just as you pass by that pleasant hill off-ramp. you see this rig is in place. so they should hopefully start to improve the situation. we might have to have shifting lane closures as they do try to clear these from the area. we'll track that. meanwhile the map shows you the backup. let me show you the video we have. this is the video just after 5:00 this morning is when this was reported.

that's originally why four of your five lanes were blocked. look how far the flames are kicking the the right. it actually caught the hillside on fire for a short period of time. all these fire crews got on scene. it was officially a one-alarm fire. six of the cars caught on fire, three of them quickly put out. that's why they had all that activity. chp cleared the scene and the fire crew has been doing the traffic control as well. obviously people have a reason to respect that scene. west 24 just off 680, very slow all the way back to 680 and also coming down out of concord and walnut creek, just past 242 is where you start the slowing in pleasant hill. south of here you're okay. if you're north of pleasant hill or can get north, take 680 to highway 4 over toward hercules, join up with the eastshore freeway and you get down to the bay bridge. a little more mileage, but a clear shot as well. we have a rug reported in lanes

west 580 el char row. it should get cleared quickly. a pretty mild slowing for dublin, pleasant ton areas as you commute towards 680. 87 showing speeds coming down into the upper 50s to downtown. that will build. right here north 101, we'll show you the live shot. we have the big backup. the earlier crash looks like it was cleared from lanes. a smooth drive here here with the nice, no clouds. 17 into the santa cruz mountains, also very nice. palo alto, along the peninsula, a very easy drive. just picking up a few folks for company. this is northbound 101 past university avenue, a smooth drive at the limit for palo alto, san mateo and into and out of san francisco. good stuff, guys. we'll send it back to you. nothing short of a very special delivery of a lifetime for a long time a's employee before last night's game. look at this, closer and future hall of famer mariano rivera

posing as a pizza delivery man. julie has worked in the mail room for 25 years. look at the smile on her face says it all. rivera who is retiring at the end of the see sorngs surprising employees at ball parks across the country, kind of a victory good-bye tour to show his appreciation for all their hard work. >> that's super cool. that's great. another feel-good story happened just before the yankees took on the a's last night. the first pitch was tossed out from 1,800 miles away. last night a's and google placed a robotic arm on the pitching mound in oakland when 13-year-old nicola grande threw the pitch in kansas city. the robotic arm activated in oakland. you see him putting that out on the field. the robotic arm it mimics his movement to throw out the first pitch. >> that's incredible. >> isn't that cool? what a cute kid. he loves baseball but can't play

new this morning t united nations just releasing its death toll in the on going conflict happening now in syria. the u.n. says nearly 93,000

people confirmed dead, but the real number is likely to be far higher. among the victims, at least 6,500 children. the government loyalists and rebels have been fighting in syria since back in march of 2011. two motorcycle officers in president obama's motorcade are recovering after a crash last night in miami. miami police say the officers were involved in a crash while approaching an interstate on-ramp. so far no specific details about that crash have been made public. one officer said to have a road rash. the other has a back injury and minor injuries to his face. president obama was in miami for two democratic party fund-raisers. today the president is back at the white house to host a reception for members of the lgbt community. this marks the fifth time the president has hosted this event which brings together elected officials, faith leaders and local advocates and community organizers. one person invited that will not be attending is raiders

punter chris kluwe. he's been an outspoken supporter for same-sex marriage and members of the lbgt community. he responded saying he wished he could be there but has to be at a mandatory mini camp today. updates to several breaking stories in the bay area including an all-out search for suspects after a deadly stabbing in san jose. we're also keeping our eye on this huge fire that happened with a big rig carrying tons of cars this morning. highway 24 near lafayette. we have an update on that scene and on your morning commute.

the ringing in of the opening bell. scott mcgrew looking at another rough day ahead at the markets following a flogging of stocks overseas. today is thursday, june 15th. this is "today in the bay." i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to several breaking stories we've been following all morning long. overnight in the bay area police are searching for the man who stabbed a man today on checkers drive in east san jose. motive still under investigation. this is san jose's 24th homicide of the year. meantime in san francisco, police there are searching for three men who shot and killed two men. this in visitacion valley. police say they're looking for two african-american men and one is a mow an man. police clearing out an encampment this morning, protesters at the haiz valley farm. police say they served an

eviction notice to the protesters earlier this week. activists have been camping out for more than a week apparently because the land is marked for construction of a new apartment complex. on the national scene, today the director of the nsa briefing members of the house and senate committees on the government's once secret phone and surveillance programs. meantime the man who blew the whistle remains in hiding in hong kong. today's tracie potts live in capitol hill with more details of this on going investigation. >> reporter: good morning. he's telling a hong kong newspaper he has no intent at all of coming back to the u.s. he'll fight expedition if we try to get him back. he also says the u.s. has been hacking china's commuters. no response yet from the white house on that. men time the chief of the national security agency says they're not quite sure he's telling the whole story when edward snowden says he can sit at his desk and wiretap anyone he wants to. they don't see he had that type

of access. they do want to look into what access he did have. meantime the chief of the nsa here has been defending the program and over in hong kong, there have been demonstrations in support of edward show den as he open this is new case about whether the government should have been spying on americans' phone records and our internet activities. today nsa chief back here on capitol hill giving the closed door briefings to lawmakers as they ask more and more questions about how ha surveillance works. jon? >> no doubt a lot of debate on this one. tracie potts, thank you forgiving us insight. at 6:32, happening now, a massive fire snarling traffic in the east bay as flames engulf a big rig hauling a load of cars. it was really bad out there. it all happened on highway 24 near interstate 680 lafayette. right now that big fire is out.

but the commute is still a mess. >> over my shoulder let's show folks this shot from our chopper over the scene. earlier fire obviously out. we have over off to our right a big rig tow truck. look at that, eight wheels in the back there to help with the weight. they're trying to hook up with that. i think they're going to try to haul this whole thing off. stay clear and watch the scene. two right lanes blocked at west 24. the earlier fire out. it did catch the hillside as well. chp on site doing traffic control as well. we have a big backup off 680. it's not just off 680. it's including 680 southbound. the slowing would come up already from concord and pleasant hill toward the walnut creek interchange. meanwhile, if you can head north on 680 to highway 4, you're okay toward the eastshore freeway.

that's a great alternate. a smoother drive. just more mileage. here is the tri-valley, we have slowing through livermore, dublin, pleasant ton. the summertime shift kicking in. the berk cli curve we see the traffic flow through the maze is moving slowly. some folks in lafayette. the caldecott tunnel is smooth and the approach to the bridge, metering lights on. the sunlight is coming in. i can feel the heat right there. >> that's right. you call it the sunrise slow down. grab shows shades. we're crystal clear to start the day in san jose and san francisco. the big point i want to make, when e i show you the live picture, you can see both towers of the golden gate bridge, even commuters traveling along that bridge. whenever we start this clearing, it typically means we'll see a hot afternoon, but that's not the case for today. west early flow will persist. let's take you through your hour by hour changes for today. mostly clear, abundant sunshine.

right now in the 40s and 50s. by lunchtime, warmer day at the coast but just about as warm as it was inland. just a beautiful day. 77 degrees at 1:00 p.m. rounding out the day at 80 degrees. it is a big weekend for the bay area. multiple graduations apg andther's day, i'll have your full forecast in just a few minutes. right now back to you, jon and laura. >> 6:35. in san jose, crews will finish digging up the remains of a forgotten cemetery. it was actually discovered beneath a parking lot during construction at valley medical center. it's believed to have been used way back from the 1980s -- i should say 1870s to the 1930s before disappearing from county records. experts say the same tear was used to bury people who died. it was then the county hospital. but ones that couldn't afford a

funeral service to date. crews have so far removed 631 coffins from that site, but have found no identifying information on those remains. 6:36 right now. still ahead, after a nightmare at sea. we'll give you a look at carnival's triumph cruise ship before it gets set to set sail for the first time since the disaster rouse fire. out in colorado, still battling fire out there. a lot of people on scene, a lot of fire crews and rescue crew haves been fighting this one back. we'll keep you posted as any information comes in. big-time blazes up in those mountains. we're taking a look at the colorado wildfires this morning, giving you a live picture. they're having a tough time fighting these four wildfires that continue to burn across colorado. in northeast colorado the fires have actually burned 92 homes, forcing at least 7,000 people to evacuate. and a separate wildfire in the southern part of the state has destroyed 20 buildings and forced at least 250 people to evacuate there. you see they're doing what they can dipping into reservoirs to try to get any water they can to fight some of the flames. >> no doubt about it. a very tough go in the midwest with the massive line of storms rolling through packing hail, lightning and very strong winds. you can see this is video from

that storm barreling through central michigan right now. the storm initially is forecast to be even more intense. so far it has not reached the status of a rare weather event kald a derichio, an explosive wind pattern very much like a hurricane but of course on land. carnival triumph back in service for the first time since an engine room fire stranded it in the gulf of mexico for days. you'll recall passengers described unsanitary conditions, power outages, cold food during the ordeal. today's cruise from galveston to texas to mexico, get this, it's sold out. carnival spent $115 million on repairs and upgrades. i guess people think now may be the best time to sail. the "today" show will have an exclusive look inside the revamped ship right after "today in the bay" in about 20 minutes. >> got to think they offered a lot of discounted rates. an update to several

happening right now. quite the scene out here. a big rig fire making a mess of the morning commute. this is on highway 24 in lafayette just past pleasant hill road. you can see the cars scorched there. the big rig was dairying a load of cars. we have video to show you, really intense flames. this was shot earlier this morning showing the flames jumping right off the big rig and catching on all those cars. this fire we can tell you is now out. that's the good news. but the traffic is still very slow in that area. mike inouye, he will be along to have an update on how the traffic is looking now. an update to breaking news we've been following all morning long, homicide investigators at the scene of a deadly stabbing in san jose. it happened just after 12:30 this morning on checkers drive

close to alum rock avenue. that's where "today in the bay's" marla tellez this morning who joins us with the latest. >> reporter: in the last few minutes we heard from police that the victim in this deadly stabbing is a 56-year-old filipino man who happens to live right on this block, checkers drive near alum rock. the victim in the stabbing, a 56-year-old asian man found stabbed multiple times in the middle of the street. the investigators have been out here since this was called in shortly after 12:30 this morning. neighbors are waking up, just hearing the news for the first time. many of them -- we've seen plenty of looks of surprise. they seem to be very rattled by the news as they learn this from the police out here as they wake up to start their thursday morning. now, police are taking pictures, collecting evidence. we caught video of the victim's tennis shoes that are part of the investigation. the stabbing was reported after 12:30 this morning. the police arrived to find this

overnight. this time in san francisco where poli police. victim bodies were found early in the intersection of brook dale and blythe dale avenues near the john mcclaren park. police are saying they're looking for two african-american men along with a samoan man. they were last seen driving away in a white truck. also in san francisco a developing story where police were clearing out an encampment of protesters at the hayes fally farm, some from tree tops. this video showing police plucking one protesters out of a home made tree house. they've apparently been camped out for more than a week. the farm is on laguna between fell and oak streets. police say they served an eviction notice to the protesters earlier this week. we have a live look right now at the farm. we've just learned that seven people have been arrested, one

student to six years in prison for the drunk driving deaths of his girlfriend and 6-year-old son. 25-year-old jose was drunk when his speeding cadillac hit a tree in may of last year. his girlfriend also graduated from cal, had been valedictorian at her high school after having a baby at 16. lucile packard's children's hospital says a lap computer is missing and may have contained medical information. palo alto online reporting a employee noticed the laptop was missing back on may 8. hospital officials say they say the computer may have contained information like patient's names, ages, phone numbers, surgical procedures for nearly 13,000 patients between 2009 and 2012. those patients are being notified by mail just as a precaution. however, officials say there's
