good morning. welcome to "today" on a thursday mornle. >> al's got a busy morning. this is a massive storm system impacting 75 million people in nearly two dozen states. you're looking at some of the damage, the torrential rains, damaging winds that lashed parts of michigan. >> we're just beginning to feel the impact of these storms in the northeast. we're going to get to al in a moment. we want to begin with kristen dahlgren in chicago. she will show us the damage that's already been done. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. a sigh of relief if chicago. things have cleared but a different scene here overnight. now millions more as you said

bracing for this massive and dangerous system. a rough night across the midwest with tornados touching down in bellman, iowa. in yorkville, illinois lightning strikes and thunderstorms blanketed the area. outside of chicago, the weather channel's mike seidel took cover with his crew inside their vehicle near joliet. >> you can see what may be a rain-wrapped funnel cloud. the tornado siren on our back door. it was piercing and for about 15 or 20 minutes we got just shellacked with winds. >> reporter: lightning hitting the sears tower. >> did quite a bit of damage. >> reporter: in northeast illinois heavy rain sent residents running for cover while hail, sleet and high winds battered the area knocking down trees and power lines. >> quite the wind. probably one of the better winds we've seen. >> reporter: in lake dalton,

wisconsin rain caused part of the roof to collapse at a walmart. thoupss left without power in the chicago area. 500 flights out of o'hare international airport were canceled. >> reporter: no major injuries reported but 20,000 customers in the chicago area without power and that number could grow as we go through the day today as this moves east. >> kristen dahlgren, thank you. >> al has been tracking this storm. what do we expect? >> we have ground stops at the airports at baltimore, d.c., philadelphia and laguardia and those airport delays are going to grow. look at this massive system from indianapolis all the way to new york. and you can see the lightning strikes, we have severe thunderstorm watches in effect right now from parts of central pennsylvania down to washington, d.c. until 11:00 a.m. this morning. and as we go into the live radar you can see where all of this is going on. hagerstown, maryland, elkins, west virginia, it's moving to the east, washington, d.c., you're going to see it just

about 9:00. and here is what we can expect. as far as today is concerned we have a risk of storms from jackson into the northeast but as we zoom in, the strongest risk for severe damaging winds, hail, possibility of tornados, richmond, norfolk, d.c. all the way up just south of new york city. so we are going to be looking at not only the damaging winds and all of the hail, but rain where we have not seen or we've seen a lot of rain we're going to see more. upwards of five inches of rain from central pennsylvania back into new england, and so we have flash flood watches and flood watches in effect from northern indiana all the way to boston, new york, washington, and pittsburgh. it is going to be a mess and the rain blasts right into tomorrow. savannah. >> we'll check back with you. all of that rain could have come in handy in colorado where a series of wild fires is raging on. the flames are spreading now and

prompting increased evacuations. miguel almaguer is in colorado springs with this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. burning three days now the black forest fire may have charred up to 12,000 acres. the blaze is unchecked still spreading out of control as we get our first up close look at the damage. behind the firelines with nearly 100 homes swallowed by flames, many million-dollar properties reduced to mounds of rubble. the damage outside colorado springs stretches block after block. this morning, crews are mopping up hot spots, some 300 homes were saved in the fire fight, but 3400 others remain in the path of this out-of-control inferno. nearly 10,000 people can't go home. >> we have a 20-month-old, and this morning she asked to go home. things like that are hard. >> reporter: for three days the black forest fire has swept

across some 50 square miles of land. video taken by the "denver post" shows the fire's aggressive erratic behavior after nightfall. despite a steady dose of an air and ground assault, crews have not beatsen back flames. wednesday the fire split into two, moving in different directions. >> it's still quite volatile and i'll tell you we are throwing everything at this we possibly can. >> reporter: this morning the battle in some neighborhoods is over, while in other communities it's just begun. this fire is still being fueled by bone dry conditions and whipping winds. firefighters could catch a break weather wise, we could expect to see lower winds later today that will help crews on the front line. there are four major wild fires burning across colorado. matt. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. we've got new developments this morning tied to the nsa leaks and of course the search for the man behind them.

nbc's ian williams is in hong kong where edward snowden has spoken out again. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. edward snowden did resurface briefly for what was in effect an appeal to hong kong through its main english language newspapers. he said he wants to stay here and fight. >> edward snowden has given an interview. >> reporter: the talk of hong kong, an interview with the morning post from a safe house somewhere in this teeming city of 7.2 million people. in it, edward snowden alleges that the u.s. hacked into hu hundreds of targets in china and hong kong saying i'm not here to hide from justice, i'm here to reveal criminality. he intends to ask the courts and people of hong kong to decide my fate. >> i think he is slightly deluding himself. there isn't a strong tradition of being supportive of people

is recovering from a life saving double lung transplant. the 10-year-old had been unconscious since saturday. without the surgery to repair her damaged lungs her family didn't expect the fourth-grader to survive a week. after six hours good news. >> wow. what a night. the surgery was very, very successful. it was flawless, perfectly executed. >> reporter: the team had to resize the adult donor lungs to fit sarah. lungs she never would have gotten without a court order. the family filed a lawsuit to get their daughter on a donor list of patients 12 years old or older. and they won. a week later, an adult donor was found. >> we waited 18 mlts for pediatric lungs, we would not have gotten an offer that would have saved her life without being able to get adult lungs. >> reporter: transplant rules create two lists, one for children under 12 and one for everyone over.

adult transplants can be risky in small children but children donor are rare. the rules are established by a group of doctors to manage a limited supply. some worry desperate families waiting for transplants may now turn to the courts. >> we have an avenue, allowing judges to make dess rather than a system that strives to be as fair and transparent as possible. >> reporter: the family believes the system is broken and that sarah was nearly a victim of it. >> everyone is so relieved and happy. we fought for this for so long it's hard to believe it happened. >> reporter: they thank the family of the donor who had to suffer a loss for sarah to get these lungs. health experts say this case and many like it highlight the real problem in this country, which is a lack of organ donors. >> stephanie, thank you very much. the carnival cruise "triumph" is ready to sail again since february's engine fire that you

federal authorities after threatening letters that tested positive for the deadly poison ricin were discovered. they'd been mailed to president obama, a washington lobbyist, and new york city mayor michael bloomberg. >> the letter, in essence, complains about gun control and says that anyone who comes for my gun will be shot in the face. >> officials say richardson told them her estranged husband nathaniel, an army veteran, had been behind the poison letters. fbi agents searched the couple's home in new boston, texas, 95 miles from shreveport, louisiana, where the letters were postmarked. after authorities say she failed a polygraph test, richardson was arrested and charged with sending the letters herself in an attempt to frame her husband. she has yet to enter a plea, but her attorneys say she'll plead not guilty. nate richardson is with us now along with his attorney john delk. gentlemen, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> nate, let's go back to the beginning when federal

authorities came to you and said your wife had implicated you in sending these letters with ricin. what was your first reaction? >> well, it was kind of like disbelief, or it was like a bad dream. >> were you afraid that you might be arrested and charged? >> well, a lot of times, fbi kind of jumps to conclusions, but they were very thorough, very respectful, and just not really moving too quickly. >> were you shocked that an accusation like that would come from your own wife? i know you were going through some marital troubles, but that said, was this not pretty surprising? >> oh, yes, very surprising, very surprising. >> did you think she was capable of something like that? >> well, really, you don't sit there and think about what people would do to you, but i just really didn't know, couldn't tell. >> take me back into that interrogation room. as i understand it, you were questioned for almost 11 hours. what did they say?

what was that scene like? >> i can't go into the actual specifics of what questions, but it was -- they were just very thorough. they asked all kinds of questions. you know, when you don't know anything, it just seems really strange to hear some of them. >> according to the affidavit, there were computer searches related to ricin found on the home computer. they later found some castor beans, which is an ingredient in ricin, in your car. your wife now claims to the authorities that, yes, she sent the letters, about ybut you for to. so let's get on the record about this. did you have anything to do with these letters sent to president obama and others? >> no, ma'am. >> john, do you feel your client is out of the woods in terms of this investigation? >> i wouldn't say out of the woods. i'd say we're close to the edge of the woods. there are small areas that we still need to mop up with the fbi, but i think they're pretty clear how they feel who did this. one person's been arrested.

homes of grieving relatives. when you leave for the funeral, the thieves move in, and they are heartless. >> this is hard. >> reporter: it happened to cindy and dennis higden. their son christian was tragically killed, but while they were at his funeral laying him to rest, thieves were ransacking their kentucky home. you get to the front door, and what do you see? >> everything in the house totally torn apart, thrown everywhere, broken. it's like you have already felt like you're at the lowest point you could be, and i literally -- it's like i just fell to the ground. >> reporter: police say the thieves found this family through this obituary in the local newspaper, listing their full names, their hometown, and the date and time of the funeral. investigators say these two men, now charged, hit the house during the service, giving them hours to steal everything from expensive jewelry to computers

to sentimental items from christian's own room. >> they took everything away from us. they put us into another level of low that we didn't think could ever exist. >> reporter: you thought you were at the lowest? >> yes, but we found out there's still a long way to go. >> reporter: and police say it gets even more extreme. near seattle, ten homes burglarized while the families were at funerals. hundreds of thousands of dollars in possessions stolen. >> it's heinous. it's reprehensible. >> reporter: margaret ludwig is lead investigator and busted these three, now in prison. they were running an obituary crime ring so sophisticated and organized, even seasoned investigators were stunned. >> they had their computers set up to where they would receive e-mail notifications of the new obituaries that were coming into the local paper. >> reporter: this was a serious operation? >> yes, a lot of thinking went into how they were going to pull this off. >> reporter: for the victims who have already lost so much, it is

the ultimate invasion. >> it's like, please, have a heart. i mean, think about the people you're doing this to. what they're already going through. >> that family wanted to share their story to help you at home. in fact, they're so traumatized by what happened, they're actually planning to move out of their house. police say we can all learn from this, and there are ways to protect yourself. so here's the takeaway. if you lose a loved one and you write an obituary, don't print your full name or hometown. that just makes it easy for the criminals to find you. if you can, have a friend or a neighbor stay at your house during the funeral just to keep an eye on things. and if that's not possible, park a few cars in the driveway to make it look like someone is home. obviously, this is the last thing you want to think about when you're grieving, but, matt, as we have seen, these krim lcrs will stoop to any level to get money. >> what's the expression?

the last couple of years, and now if you're a consumer and you love this stuff, you're watching real problems at the company. does that matter to consumers at all? >> no, it's about the product. it's about the product, having it in stock, having new categories to expand into, and it's still working. >> i was watching, after the whole see-through debacle, the company stabilized, it did real well. the stock seemed to stabilize. i know that women, for example, standing in a store waiting to buy some yoga pants don't care about a stock price. but i want to show you what happened to this stock over the course of a day or two. it plummeted after the announcement that the ceo was leaving. it lost about 17% or 18% of its value. what's the reason for that if the consumers are still liking the products? >> christine day has done a terrific job building sales, building earnings. you've had a ceo who's in place from '05 to '08 who's responsible for taking the company public. christine built the identity, had competent consumers come in to build the dna. next up, global growth. different skill set for global growth versus building a brand. >> what do they need to do right

"today's" erica hill took a look at that. erica, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah, good morning to you. they claim to be the healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes. with more people making a switch, they've certainly come a long way. remember when smoking was cool, even sexy? how times have changed. hollywood's new cigarette of choice just may be electronic. >> i just take a regular. >> reporter: actress katherine heigl got david letterman to try one back in 2010. >> you have no excuse now to smoke a real cigarette.

>> reporter: and she's not the only celeb puffing and pushing e-cigarettes. >> it lets me enjoy smoking without affecting the people around me. >> reporter: makers tout the gadgets as a healthier alternative because there's no smoke. e-cigarettes use batteries to heat nicotine in a cartridge. creating a vapor that's inhaled, then exhaled as water. but there's also no data yet on the long-term effects of e-cigarettes. the fda, which does not yet regulate them, warns there's no way to know "whether e-cigarettes are safe." one thing we do know, they're big business. >> it was worth $500 million in 2012. analysts project that it's going to be worth $1 billion in 2013. >> reporter: overall traditional cigarette sales are down, falling 4.5% in the first two months of this year. while e-cigarettes aren't the only factor for that dip, there's no denying their rise in popularity.

in 2011, 21% of adult smokers had used e-cigarettes, up from just 10% the year before. and there may be one other incentive, cost. >> estimate that they're somewhere between $800 and $900 in savings a year if a consumer switches from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes. >> reporter: something you can bet marketers will capitalize on. and traditional tobacco companies are also taking notice. altria, whose stable brand is marlboro, announced plans for its own electronic cigarette recently. savannah? >> okay, erica, thank you. let's take a deeper look with dr. nancy snyderman, she's nbc's chief medical editor. nancy, good morning to you. the fda says there haven't been studies to determine officially whether they're safe. is there a feeling among the medical community about whether these e-cigarettes are safe for people? >> we know that nicotine is the addictive compound that brings you into the tent. then it's the 4,000 chemicals and tar that kill you in regular cigarettes.

so, if you just look at a nicotine delivery system versus a nicotine and carcinogen delivery system, which is a typical cigarette, doctors will say it's safer and maybe a steppingstone to get off real cigarettes, but are there long-term tests to see if the other compounds are safe? not really. >> they're safer than traditional cigarettes, but are they safe? that's still an open question. >> nicotine alone in the doses you get in a real cigarette is not really a problem. it is addicting, but it's not what really hurts you. it's the stuff that comes along with it. >> do you like the idea of using the e-cigarette as kind of a stepdown for someone who needs a gateway to quitting but doesn't want to go cold turkey? >> i'm a cancer surgeon. cigarettes are what kept me in business for 30 years. anything that allows people to step away from tobacco is, to me, a decent first step. there's propylene glycol in here and glycerine, and they're in a lot of household compounds we use anyway. certainly better than arsenic

and a lot of the other compounds we see in real tobacco. >> would you worry about a nonsmoker or perhaps a former smoker picking it up and saying, these are safe. why don't i give it a try? >> that's just it. if you get addicted to nicotine, you then get lured back to the smell and the ambience of real cigarettes. nobody's looked at that. the gateway idea of drug addiction has always been controversial. but i think, as it stands right now, big tobacco absolutely knows these are a hot item because, one, people die from cigarettes or they quit. so what does big tobacco have to do? they have to recoup those people. so, to see this as a hot market, they're absolutely going to do it. altria, which is really philip morris, they're looking forward to this. i suspect this is going to be a very big global investment. >> nancay, always good to get your take on it. thank you very much. we'll send it over to matt. now to an innovative program to deal with a serious problem that's faced by millions of americans. it's hoarding, and it could become a model for cities across the country.

eamon is here with the details. good morning to you. >> thanks, matt. the latest edition of the psychiatric diagnostic manual lists compulsive hoarding as an official disorder. an estimated 1 out of 20 americans has a problem with it. that's why an agency in southern california is taking a more holistic approach to protecting their community. somewhere in this room is the bed for nancy hall spends most of her day. after more than a decade of hoarding, there are only a few places where nancy can stand or sit in her two-story town home. your house is almost not usable with the way that you want to use it. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: and that has orange county fire prevention specialist darren johnson worried. >> the amount of combustibles that nancy has in her house and smoking is just a countdown to a disaster. >> reporter: johnson is part of the county's hoarding task force, protecting communities from the safety risks of hoarders while helping hoarders like nancy. with johnson's help, nancy has cleared a path in her home,

installed new smoke alarms, and even switched to electronic cigarettes. it's all an effort to keep nancy's home from turning into this. this is the worst of the worst, a town home in san juan capistrano, where johnson and a vector control inspector are forced to walk on two feet of trash to check for rats. >> there's a lot of dead. you can smell the dead. >> you can definitely smell the dead. >> reporter: the home belonged to jillian cannon, a lifelong hoarder who passed away in january and hadn't allowed anyone in her home in more than six years. >> two years ago we tried to have an intervention with her. we wanted to try and get things cleaned up and get her on the road to recovery, and she absolutely refused. >> you really do need help with this. >> reporter: back at nancy's home, the fire department calls in another member of the task force. >> you come into a room like this, what's your initial reaction or response?

>> paperwork is a tough one for a lot of people. nancy, you're definitely not alone there. >> reporter: cory chalmers is the owner of the cleaning company featured in the tv show "hoarders." >> anyone who works with a hoarder has to play psychologist. this isn't about going in and taking their trash and cleaning up stuff, it really is. >> reporter: what if you came in and your house was beautiful and you didn't know what happened to your stuff. what would your thoughts and emotions be? >> well, i would be appalled, to begin with. >> reporter: for the task force, success comes from striking the right balance between ensuring public safety and getting individual help for people like nancy. >> she's going down the right path, and we're just excited for nancy. >> it's in the right direction. obviously, you know, there's a long way to go. >> nancy says a flood in the late '90s was the beginning of her problems with clutter, and

>> reporter: it started as an innovative way to reach spray can street artists is now open to all children as young as 9, as old as 22. more than 30,000 have taken part. some are budding michelangelos, but others like jamie griggs by weren't quite sure. >> at first, i didn't know where i was going with this art. i knew i wanted to do it. and, you know, being part of the program has really changed me. >> reporter: she recently graduated from art school and is now a teacher with the mural arts program. and she's helping lots of new art projects. >> we did it so kids could be interested and instead of throwing the stuff in the trash can. so basically, we put designs on it. >> reporter: dozens of the trash compacters sit on the city street corners. organizers insist this is about more than sketching, drawing and painting. there's math. problem solving and team work too. which has provided a boost to their education. >> it feels that they have

>> because i don't know how to read the guy's expression on their face. >> what is in the boyfriend burger? >> pork, ground pork, italian sausage, beef, an egg. it's really nice. i put some bread crumbs and some tomatoes. worcestershire sauce and wine. mix it up here and make a little patty. put it on the grill for about five minutes or so on each side. >> one of the ingredients that caught my attention on your list here, these critters right here. >> those little crunchies. you take a bite and get that crunch. >> how do you do that? >> you get a sweet potato and just make little strips. you deep fry it in oil, put a little salt on it. deep fry in oil, and you have these nice little crispies there. >> and you assemble that thing after cooking it. i just want to show people, can we get a shot of what it looks like on the end? is >> really good.
