at the corner of leavenworth and sutter in san francisco earlier this week. tillman was using a fake i.d. but admitted his true identity once he was confronted. new this morning, a fire has damaged a home on 73rd avenue near international boulevard in oakland. firefighters say the single story home caught fire shortly before 1:00 this morning. crews were able to get it under control quickly. no word on any injuries or what may have sparked that fire. >> it was a very late night, turned into an early morning for a group of south bay parents angry about how their school district is being run. they attended a public meeting at school headquarters where they demanded change with the school board, a group it's calling toxic. that meeting only finished a few hours ago. marla tellez right now joining us live from the newsroom with more details on these accusations levied against some of those board members. >> first and foremost, let me say this contentious board

meeting lasted seven hours. it began at 6:00 thursday evening and after three hours of public comment from very concerned parents, it finally ended at 1:00 this morning. our camera capturing an overflow standing-room-only crowd, families standing in the hallways as they stood by to voice their concern over the entire board of education. there are a total of seven members on the board. parents are taking direct aim at them, including the president, christine colterman thachlt say they use intimidation and micromanaging tactics which led to an exodus of administrators since november, 15 administrators left the district. that's 20% of administrators districtwide. last night parents presented a petition calling for these school boards to remind. >> it is unbelievably bad. you only have to see one meeting and understand the agenda of

these four board members is just outrageous. >> much of this outrage is directed at chris stam pole lus who say he and his colleagues were elected to make change including student proficiency, especially among latino students. >> yes, i think there are administrators leaving because of the results of the election. from a community perspective, that's a great thing. >> that petition brought forward last night was signed by more than 2,000 people and showed a vote of no confidence for these four members. what is next? these four don't seem to be bundling, so tles ooh talk of a recall to make that happen. parents need signatures from 20% of registered voters within the district. jon and laura? >> thank you very much, laura. a fremont restaurant appears to be the latest victim of a telephone scam. business gets a call from someone claiming to be pg&e demanding immediate payment for allegedly past due bills. pg&e says the scam appears to

target latino-owned businesses and says its employees will never ask for immediate payment over the phone. the latest scam cost the countryway restaurant $500. pg&e and also warning people they may smell gas on parts of the peninsula this morning. not to worry. utility will start venting gas in the palo alto, stanford and menlo park areas in about an hour. the work should actually take about three hours. utility trying to install enhanced pipelines in that area. it is 5:04 right now. neither of us were able to hit the powerball, but we hit the powerball lottery every dwa in the bay area. christina loren, it's the weekend, beautiful out. >> we are the envy of the nation still. we have extreme heat gripping much of the nation. also we've got the strong storms still in parts of the northeast. for us today we're talking about another gorgeous day, perfection at the beach. i did want to point out where we are from 24 hours ago.

as we take a look here, the taillights moving smoothly. the southbound side moves smoothly out of downtown. the south bay looking at a smooth drive as well. we do have to focus here just farther north from the south bay proper, going towards -- my goodness, what happened to my maps. let me see if i can go back. the top corner underneath where it says nbc bay area, you see the construction sign there, there is debris and construction going on there. construction northbound, debris southbound heading toward moffett. that may be an issue. it's a large round object. as you can see from the rest of the screen, the flow of traffic just fine through the rest of your south bay. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. 5:06 right now. a painful reality, parking in san francisco can get very expensive. that beg it is question how much are you willing to pay? what prime parking spot near at&t park just sold for, wait for it, $80,000. that's crazy. smith went to take a look at this spot. i'm sure it's spectacular, a gorgeous-looking parking spot. in your opinion, is it worth 80 grand? >> reporter: if you had it to burn, it might be a good thing to buy. it is a great location, right by at&t park, the embarcadero, lots of restaurants around here, as you said, home to one of the most expensive parking spots in this city. one inside of this building here, a parking spot just sold for $82,000, that according to the chronicle. located in the south beach neighborhood. most recently a porsche suv was parked there. in a city like san francisco where parking is always tight, it can be a great investment. a parking spot can add up to big money to the price of a condo if you're trying to sell it. they can also be rented out for about $450 a month. at the height of the real estate boom, this spot went for about $95,000. so maybe this is a deal, jon.

there are also property taxes and hoa dues to pay. sounds steep, but consider this, san francisco home prices are up 22% since march of last year. south beach area condos are going for about $1,000 a square foot. this parking space was about $854 a square foot. this sale was an all-cash deal. i looked online at what street side parking goes for here in the city right near at&t park. if you don't have that $82,000, just your average street side parking spot would be about $5 to $7 an hour. live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> christie, thank you. wow. >> interesting. >> $82,000. the good news is you pay hoa dues on top of it. that's bananas. >> i think i'll feed the meter. inaugural flight. the new competition for the boeing 787 that lifted off just

welcome back everyone. good friday morning to you. this morning investigators looking into a freak accident that killed a worker at the stevens creek quarry. it marks the second death at a south bay job site in just four days. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago live in cupertino with more information this morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. workers will be showing up for shifts at the quarry about 7:00 this morning. most of the workers return knowing that they've lost one of their own. the accident happened yesterday afternoon at around 1:00.

the worker was apparently operating a piece of heavy equipment and somehow lost control of it. that's according to police. he was taken to stanford hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. this is the second workplace death, two occurred this week, 63-year-old donald white was killed when he was hit by an elevator counterweight while he was working on the 49ers new stadium in santa clara. there was a safety meeting for more than 1,000 workers yesterday in which they also observed a moment of silence for donald white. state health and safety officials were at the stadium continuing with their investigation. now, back to this latest incident here at the quarry, the victim has not yet been identified, but cal osha has been alerted and they should be looking into the matter. live in cupertino, arturo santiago, "today in the bay." new this morning, the brand new airbus a350 has taken off on its maiden flight. this is video provided by airbus of that event in southwest

france. airbus employees waved flags on the runway. locals were so excited, they decided to show up and watch from nearby fields. the a350 is designed with the wider body, meant to compete with boeing's 787 and the 777 dreamliners. new revelation this is morning yahoo! fought the federal government over prism. that system to tap into what we're doing on the internet. >> yahoo! didn't want to do it according to reporters of "the new york times." sunnyvale company fought it in federal court. the foreign intelligence surveillance court issued this order, made yahoo! turn over the data. google and twitter also fought demands in court. we have yet to see any evidence anyone has ever won in fisa court. there's a historical irony here, back in 1987, then yahoo! ceo jerry yang was called before

kron stat convalescent center hit with a $60,000 fine. medical mistakes by staff members left to three different residents dieing. all thee facilities they say patient safety is a top priority and o'connor hospital says it will appeal the fine. it is 5:19 now. a follow up to an exclusive report. top attorneys in the d.a. got hundreds of hours of free time off. it comes after our investigative unit exposed district attorney jeff rosen handing out extra days off in place of a bonus cut. this letter was sent to government attorneys association calling what rosen did a secret action that has raised a number of concerns from county administration. it demands attorneys who were given extra time off take those hours from their vacation banks. if they don't, expect an investigation. >> some of the people on this

list almost immediately responded by asking me how do i give these hours back. i know they were particularly concerned about how this could look if they were perceived to have accepted administrative leave hours that the d.a. couldn't grant. >> in response, santa clara county d.a. rosen issued nbc bay area a statement calling the time off, quote, a benefit attorneys lawfully earned. the attorney general still conducting a civil investigation into this issue. we'll bring you updates as soon as we get them. things get even busier in san jose. that city searching for a brand new fire chief. san jose on the hunt for a new police chief, and now new word fire chief willy mcdonald is leaving town. he's said to take over in las vegas at their fire department starting late this summer. for the record he has served as san jose's chief of fire since 2010. >> we know house democratic leader nancy pelosi very talented. did you know she can show off dance moves?

a look at emeryville. traffic starting to fill up out there. mike inouye will be along to talk about your friday commute to work. christina loren has good news to tell you about, a gorgeous day ahead. it's 5:24 right now. a man in michigan right now being hailed as a hero this morning thinks of pretty fast thinking using a common kitchen item to save the life of a baby girl. 5-month-old baby nessa was being watched by the babysitter when she suddenly stopped breathing. the babysitter called 911. that's when bill hodgeeson jumped into action. he was outside the house working when he heard the call. he rushed in, tried to perform cpr. when that didn't work, he had to try something else. >> i went to the drawer and found a turkey baster and used it to clear her nasal passage and airway. had her on the back some more, spun around and got a good look at her.

first court appearance to face charges for a variety of crimes. many pleaded guilty to lesser charges. it's part of the largest gang bust in santa clara county history. followup story to one that our investigative unit first broke. a santa fe professor who crossed the line with a student no longer works at the university. school leaders won't say whether jeffrey mathis resigned or was terminated. the female student says mathis made unwanted advances during a late night meeting in his office. mathis says it was consensual. the man accused of steeling a yacht in sauce lut toe and running it aground has been deemed fit for trial. a judge ruled yesterday lesley gardner is mentally competent. prosecutors say he stole yacht back in october. the yacht ran across at lynd

march beach in pacifica hours later. gardner's defense team says he is delusional and believed the yacht was his. he remains in jail on more than $1 million bail. board members from the santa clara unified school district getting an earful from angry parents during a tense meeting which ended just hours ago. parents accuse members of creating a toxic environment which has forced teachers and administrators to leave. "today in the bay's" marla tellez live in the newsroom with more details on those accusations against the board. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning. that meeting wrapped up at 1:00 this morning, ran for a total of seven hours. about half that time the board of seven members heard from angry parents who are fed up with four members in particular. of course, we did have a crew there, though there was not much room to spare. as you can see, it was a packed house. the majority of the crowd made up of parents who say certain board members operate by using intimidation and micromanaging tactics which has ultimately

created that toxic environment. these members say it's no coincidence that since november more than a dozen administrators and teachers have left the district including five principals, a superintendent and two assistant superintendents. so last night they presented the board with a petition asking four members to resign, including president christine koltermann, ina bendis, and chris stampolis. >> he's hurt the education system in our district and it's not okay. >> stampolis acknowledges the fact that more than a dozen administrators have left. he said, quote, that's a great thing. at least one teacher doesn't have a problem with the change. >> i've seen a lot of turmoil from people who don't like things shooken up. >> parents say they're not giving up. now there's talk of a recall to make that happen. parents need signatures from 20% of registered voters within the district. i checked out the board's website today. no mention of any outcome from last night's meeting just yet.

it says the next meeting is june 27th. this, jon, is a story we will continue to watch. >> marla, thank you for the update. later this morning, los gatos posting its final version of a brand new gun ordinance for firearm dealers. that ordinance will require all shops selling firearms within town limits to apply for a permit and attend an annual meeting the renew the permit. the town will hold a public meeting on monday to talk about the ordinance. the recent opening of templar sports which currently sells firearms in los gatos sparked this debate t. company's facebook page says the ordinance would possibly prevent it from selling guns in the future. vice president joe biden and his wife, dr. jill biden, are headed for the bay area today. this morning they'll fly into camp pendleton in southern california visiting children who have lost a loved one serving in the military. then the couple heads to san francisco to attend a fund-raiser at the home of the

of traffic heading north toward high street and it completely cleared. i don't know if there was a traffic break, but chp reports no problems. we'll track the area for the nimitz and moving smoothly again. we'll see over in the tri-valley, west 580 threw livermore, you see the orange, speeds coming down into the 40s. early this morning there was some construction crews, not a lot of detail on it, so i had to do a lot of checking around. sounds like caltrans crews blocking lanes. the shift over the last few minutes shows they may have cleared and now it's just generally slow towards 680, also the arrow shows slowing down isabelle. speeds still below 20 but the orange also around 25 miles per hour, not a big deal through the area. an earlier crash also south 880, also not a big deal past auto maul, activity on the shoulder. a quick look across the bay across highway 92 onto the peninsula side which is clear.

growing syrian conflict. good morning. >> reporter: good morning everyone. now that the white house says it has conclusive evidence, sources close to those talks say the president is authorizing the united states, sending weapons to the syrian webls. we don't know how many, what type or how soon, but we have reaction from the syrian government, the foreign minister saying this is a caravan of lies and a flagrant double standard in how the u.s. is dealing with terrorists. lots of violence still under way, even as of yesterday there with warring factions in and around damascus. we're also getting reaction today from the free syrian army, one of those rebel groups saying this was long overdue. and great britain says it will be working with the united states on this and also this morning from the united nations saying what syria has done, the use of chemical weapons is a flagrant violation of international law.

lots of reaction pouring in as the u.s. now gets ready to head to the g8 next week, president obama sitting down with some of those allies to figure out what to do next. >> as always, tracie potts, thank you very much. we'll keep a very close eye on this one. in the meantime the u.s. government is still looking for the man who says he blew the whistle on the u.s. surveillance program. edward snowden is in hong kong but is hiding. this morning a newspaper backed by the communist party is urging china to allow snowden to stay, citing his recent revelations about the u.s. surveillance programs against china. snowden says the nsa has 61,000 hacking targets world wide including hundreds in hong kong and china. we're also learning this morning the british government is telling all airlines worldwide not to allow snowden to board flights bound to for the uk. the alert was secretly issued on monday and says snowden is

highly likely to be refused entry into the united kingdom. there's no word if other allies of the u.s. have issued similar alerts. a prime piece of real estate in san francisco has been sold near at&t park, not a house, not a condo. it's a parking spot. and the selling price, $82,000' smith, what would make it so valuable? is it paved in gold? >> reporter: it looks like a regular parking spot to me. it might pay off in the end if you can swing it. as you said, $82,000 for ahn front parking spot in this building near at&t park, the embarcadero, lots of restaurants. we wanted to show you this. if you can't swing that, metered parking right outside still about $7.00 an hour during events t. chronicle reports as home prices are going up, so are

parking spots. in a tight city, it can add up to about $100,000 to a condo's sale price or rent for about $450 a month. at the height of the real estate market, that same spot sold for about $95,000 which is actually a screaming deal compared with a recent irs auction in boston which fetched about $560,000 for two parking spots. the auction started at about $42,000. that's when a bidding war started. some single spots in boston can actually go for about $250,000 each. home prices in san francisco have gone up about 22% since last march. condos in the south beach area can go for about $1,000 a square foot. the parking spot. you'll also have to pay property

additional activity. over towards the bay bridge t maze moves smoothly. the toll plaza, a smooth look and approach, just the cash lane showing a little backup, no problems here as you get over the bridge or the eastshore freeway. a quick look for fremont. we'll end with this shot. i saw a big burst of traffic heading through here. over the last three minutes things have calmed down. there may have been a traffic break due to the crash over at auto mall parkway. 5:49. california lawmakers will vote today on the state's new budget. if approved as is, it will give a lot of financial help to middle class students hoping to go to state college. the bill includes the middle class scholarship program that would be fully implemented by the fall of 2017. it would offer tuition discounts to students attending uc and csu campuses. families with an income of up to $100,000 would receive a 40% discount, up to $125,000 those

families would see a 25% discount. and if you make up to $150,000, you would see a 10% discount. friends and family this afternoon remembering one of the last survivors of the 1906 san francisco earthquake. winnie hook passed away tuesday. she was a beautiful 107 years young. this is a photo from a dinner back in 2012 honoring all the survivors. we are being told she's quite the character. a memorial lunch will be held today in hook's honor at john's grill in san francisco. winnie's passing leaves just two remaining survivors of that quake, 107-year-old william delmunth and 111-year-old ruth newman. >> i got to meet some of the survivors once in one of the commemoration ceremonies have. they are filled with a lot of spirt. >> i can't imagine the stories they have to tell. >> most of them were infants or

a new lawsuit claiming "happy birthday to you" should belong to everybody, all of us. the suit aims to get a judge to place the song in the public domain and enforce warner chapel music to return millions of dollars in licensing fees it's collected for reproductions and public performances. "happy birthday" was first published by patty and mildred hill back in 1893. warner chapel claiming it got
